Did Kamala Harris or Donald Trump fare better in Tuesday's U.S. presidential debate? TaiwanPlus spoke to Dennis Lu-Chung Weng, an associate professor at Sam Houston State University in Texas.
Transcript
00:00How do you think the debate went for both candidates?
00:04For both candidates, I think they successfully defend their position,
00:09and more importantly, that they attract their specific supporter.
00:13So in today's debate, I think Trump maintained his usual style,
00:17continue with very negative campaigning to attack his opponent,
00:21Vice President Harris.
00:23It is clear that he is not particularly concerned, you know,
00:27about the accuracy of his statement,
00:30as his main strategy is to project strength.
00:34In contrast, Harris takes a different approach.
00:38Her performance was more conventional,
00:41which means she prepared well.
00:44She did everything people expect,
00:47and basically better than what people expected her to do.
00:51Trump's continued attack forced Harris to respond,
00:55and spent much of time responding to the negative campaigning,
00:59negative strategy, leaving less room for Harris to discuss her policy.
01:05We will wait and see how the polls show the performance,
01:10how the American public evaluates their performance later.
01:15But what I can tell is, in this debate,
01:18Harris did pretty well, and even better than what people expect.
