00:00Whilst freshers might be packing and preparing to head to university this September, students
00:06have already been warned that they may see some cuts to staffing and courses, as universities
00:12contend with UK tuition fees which are now reportedly less than they used to be, with
00:16fewer international students to help with university finances.
00:21Back in July, the Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, said that universities should
00:26put their own finances in order before looking for help from the taxpayer. But Joe Grady,
00:31the General Secretary of the Universities and College Union, said that universities
00:36faced, quote, catastrophe without an emergency rescue package from the government.
00:42There has been a fall in the recruitment of international students since a restriction
00:46on bringing partners and children came into force in January. This saw the previous government
00:51introduce restrictions to the student visa regime. One survey reported that the significant
00:57fall in international applications averaged a 27% drop in applications for postgraduate
01:03courses for teaching this year.
