The foods we love could soon be gone forever, say Fairtrade Foundation

00:00Farmers and producers in low-income countries who are growing coffee and cocoa for, as you say,

00:06much-loved products here in the UK are experiencing extreme weather events. It is harder for them to

00:13farm to produce the same amount of their products as they used to, so they do really need our

00:18support. Viewers at home can go and choose fair trade products. It means those farmers receive a

00:23fair price for what they have produced and they have additional income to invest in their

00:27communities to make them stronger and more resilient to the impacts of climate change,

00:31meaning that those products will be around for years to come. So it's really important that we

00:36support those farmers and producers today to ensure our favourite products will be around

00:40for years to come. The Foundation supports more than 10 million people globally, meaning producers

00:45can invest in healthcare, education and local communities, allowing them to continue to produce

00:50the food we love. So the farmers and producers that are making our favourite products like coffee,

00:55like bananas, like chocolate, they are in some of the toughest environments in the world,

01:00in low-income countries. We're talking about places like the west of Africa, east of Africa,

01:05Latin America. They are experiencing higher temperatures, more erratic rainfall,

01:12lots of different conditions, which makes it harder for them to produce those products,

01:16which we really want to rely on and enjoy in the UK. There are now almost 5,000 fair trade products

01:22here, the most popular being bananas, then chocolate and coffee. And to support more

01:27producers of these favourites is this two-week campaign. Fair Trade Fortnight is a campaign

01:32calling on everyone to be the change. You can choose a fair trade product, you can look for

01:37the label and you know that those farmers are being paid a fair price. If you're an MP, we're

01:42asking you to pledge to be the change. So listeners at home send an email to their MP asking them to

01:48sign the be the change pledge. And if you're a business, you can source more fair trade products

01:53and work together to support those farmers to receive a fair price and to adapt to the

01:57impacts of climate change.
