00:00is sleeping less bad for you? We all know that a good night's sleep is essential for a physical
00:07and mental well-being and typically people need anywhere between seven to nine hours of sleep.
00:13The sleep requirement varies for each person and it changes as we age. You might have noticed
00:19you know newborn babies spend most of their time sleeping and then as we reach adulthood
00:25you know it kind of stabilizes between seven to nine hours and again as we get older the
00:32amount of time we spend sleeping reduces. We kind of go back to the newborn phase.
00:38So the thing which I wanted to bring to your attention today is, is it the lack of sleep or
00:45the less sleep which is causing more problem or the awareness that you're losing sleep which is
00:50causing more problem. I know it sounds like a very meta thing but I'm going to explain about it.
00:56So there was a study which was done where you know I think about 400 people were observed while
01:03they were sleeping and their sleep quality was monitored using equipments so it was very accurate
01:12but the people who complained that they did not get good sleep had actually good sleep according to
01:19their readings but there were many people who did not get good sleep but never complained.
01:25So the scientists call them as you know non-complaining poor sleepers and complaining
01:31good sleepers. So when you don't get enough sleep yes there is going to be an impact of it on the
01:36body. You're going to feel tired, groggy, you might also feel irritable because your hormones are all
01:43over the place and your mood will fluctuate and you might not be able to focus and you know do
01:51problem solving. So all of these things are there but when you are even more aware or hyper aware
01:59about the lack of sleep even if you have you know woken up just one hour before your ideal wake up
02:06time and if you're very hyper aware about it then it could have an even bigger impact about it.
02:11It's important to learn about sleep, sleep hygiene, practice all of it but also learn to be
02:19a little bit gentler and kinder on yourself. We all go through some instances where we do not get
02:26sufficient sleep but we do perfectly fine. It could be like staying up all night to prepare for an exam
02:31or maybe there's a trip and we are very excited about it or you know it was your
02:38marriage or somebody's marriage and you just couldn't sleep because you were so happy and
02:42excited about it but you were fine even the next day. Again I'm not suggesting skip sleep but if
02:49you are even very hyper aware about you know missing out even a little bit of sleep that can
02:55have a huge impact on your emotional health rather than the physical health. So my recommendation to
03:02you is please follow sleep guidelines and observe what is that ideal quantity of sleep that you need
03:08six hours, seven hours or eight hours per day and stick to that and on days if you're unable to
03:14get that required amount of sleep then do not fret too much about it but make sure the
03:22following day you do not make it a habit and try to catch up on the sleep even though
03:27it's not technically possible to fully catch up because sleep that is gone is gone but at least
03:32you will be able to minimize the damage of that lost sleep on your physical and mental health.
