00:00Are you thinking about changing careers but feeling intimidated about the education and
00:04licensure associated with well-paying jobs?
00:07Exactly how much grunt work does it take to get the gratification of a new career making
00:11at least six figures?
00:12We did the math on the grunt-to-grat ratio for you, with 10 jobs you wouldn't expect
00:16to be well-paying, and the details on what it takes to land the position, in this episode
00:19of the Infographics Show, 10 Surprisingly High Paying Jobs.
00:23Don't forget to subscribe and click the bell button so that you can be part of our
00:26Notification Squad.
00:2910.
00:30Railroad Conductor Did you know that in the US professional railroad
00:34conductors are still around?
00:35Neither did we, but they exist and they cash in in some areas.
00:38The national median salary is just $54,000, but it does go all the way up to $104,000.
00:44The grunt is working your way up in a dying industry and learning on the job without many
00:48mentors or companies to choose from.
00:50You're away from home for long periods of time, but the grat is you get to see the country
00:54in an old-timey kind of way, you get to feel like that kid you once were with your first
00:57train set, and you can avoid the 9-to-5 and tell corporate America to kiss your, uh, caboose.
01:03All aboard!
01:049.
01:05Crab Fisherman Tolerating the miserable work of capturing
01:07crab through terrifying squalls for five figures per month was popularized by Discovery Channel's
01:12reality series, The Deadliest Catch.
01:15Even negotiating the dynamic between the personalities on board seems treacherous enough to think
01:19twice.
01:20But in recent years, changing safety regulations have made fishing for dungeness crab more doable.
01:24There is also an after-season for other kinds of crab, as well as fish.
01:28All said and done, you can still clear $200,000 a year after a few years' experience.
01:32The grunt work is working your way up, because there is no school for crab fishing.
01:36You have to find a crew you trust and respect to show you the ropes for when you start as
01:40a deckhand.
01:41And you'll be away from home and leave your loved ones behind to worry.
01:43The grat is having a non-traditional career and six figures to roll hard on in your few
01:47days on land.
01:498.
01:50Building Inspector It's not super scintillating, but if you're
01:52good with checklists and you have a mind for structural engineering, working for a
01:55city government inspecting buildings could bring home six figures.
01:58The grunt part is working your way up in the kind of large bureaucracy that is a major
02:02U.S. city, that is big enough to pay at least $68,000 per year, and all the way up to $117,000
02:08per year.
02:09It's also highly specialized, so you'll give up other career tracks.
02:12And there are a few months of studying for a standardized exam.
02:15But the grat is a well-paying job with predictable days and permanent demand for your skills.
02:197.
02:21Here is one for the ladies.
02:22It can be lucrative, but it has its dilemmas.
02:25And it's not really a job, as in an existing role in any company, but an opportunity you
02:29could make your full-time gig if you're really, really determined to get some cash.
02:32The grunt is altering your cycle, feeling like a human petri dish, and the whole ethical
02:36conundrum of creating a human you'll never meet.
02:39But the grat is up to $14,000 per cycle, so you could, if you go on back-to-back cycles
02:44and take two months off, clear about $140,000 in a year.
02:486.
02:49Anesthesiologist Anesthesiologists, in their quiet bedside
02:52role near the superstar surgeon, look like some kind of low-level nurse or technician.
02:56They're actually doctors, and they make bank.
02:59The grunt is med school like any other doctor.
03:02That's completing a four-year degree, doing the MCAT preparation to take the standardized
03:05exam to get into a decent medical school, then going through four years of medical school
03:09and four years of residency that actually comprise a one-year internship plus a three-year
03:13residency.
03:14Some anesthesiologists do additional residencies beyond those 12 years mandatory, and then
03:18have to study and take the board exam to become board certified.
03:21That board certification is an important credential to earn the trust involved in taking someone
03:25safely through a major surgery and recovery.
03:28But then the grat is you make more than a family doctor, general practitioner, pediatrician,
03:32or psychiatrist does.
03:33That is, anesthesiologists take home, on average, $294,811.
03:39That is a national average.
03:40In larger U.S. cities, their annual salary is in the $400,000-$500,000 range.
03:455.
03:46Grunt for the Federal Government – A writer-editor for the State Department, in which you don't
03:50do any foreign policy analysis or speech writing, but analyze communication documents and systemic
03:55functions of the department itself, grosses you $95,000 to $123,000 per year.
04:01If you'd like to do something similar for the Department of Energy and recommend standards
04:05for documentation for adults in other reports, you could start as low as $79,000 but also
04:10go up to $123,000.
04:12The grunt is working your way up in a dull bureaucracy and memorizing templates and standards
04:17and learning to speak bureaucratese.
04:19The grat is the money, the great benefits, and the job security.
04:224.
04:23Longshoremen – This job loading and unloading ship cargo at large ports is, of course, only
04:28available if you're near a big port like Houston, Los Angeles, Long Beach, or New York,
04:32or are willing to move.
04:33But you might be willing, for the money.
04:35There is no education requirement, just experience.
04:38West Coast longshoremen average $98,000 according to ShippingWatch.com, but with overtime and
04:44union power to play hardball on negotiations, that salary gets north of $100,000.
04:49And an LA Times analysis in 2015 showed over half of longshoremen made over $100,000, while
04:55foremen and managers top $200,000.
04:58A few bosses get $300,000 and all get free healthcare.
05:01A New York longshoreman makes at least $124,000, with another round of negotiations coming
05:07up in 2018.
05:08The grunt is working your way up, and the intense physical labor with never-ending stacks
05:12of cargo waiting to be moved.
05:14But the grat is the cash, the healthcare, and holding one of the few jobs that globalization
05:18actually needs.
05:193.
05:20Mine operator – underground.
05:21It's not for you if you're scared of tight spaces, and it's not glamorous, literally
05:25digging around in the dirt.
05:27And there's this coal miner image out in the pop culture lexicon of being, well, white
05:31trash.
05:32But you can laugh all the way to the bank, because if you're willing to work underground,
05:35you'll clear $150,000 to $165,000.
05:39The grunt is learning the trade on the job, the danger of the dirt, and taking such a
05:42specific career track that it doesn't prepare you for much else.
05:45But the grat is the earnings.
05:47And while automation continues to improve mining, you're not being replaced by a robot
05:51quite yet.
05:52That is, you will be in demand for a while.
05:552.
05:56City employees, at least those of affluent towns.
05:58You can actually make more than $143,000 without any education requirements in some cities,
06:03like Santa Monica.
06:04But we picked the silliest job in that particular city that pays six figures – Farmer's
06:08Market Manager.
06:09In fact, 105 City of Santa Monica workers cleared over $300,000 in 2016 to the horror
06:15of watchdog blog Transparent California.
06:17The city's global cash and resulting steady stream of tourists produce high occupancy
06:22taxes – that is, the city's share of hotel bills – and parking taxes, filling city
06:26coffers and boosting salaries for all jobs.
06:28The grunt is a dull bureaucratic job, and perhaps you're nagging conscience if you
06:32happen to be the assistant city librarian bringing home $220,000 or occupying another
06:37overpaid post.
06:38The grat is, well, you're overpaid, and you're in sunny Santa Monica or another
06:42rich city living large.
06:441.
06:45Firefighter.
06:46Hmm, running into burning buildings and maintaining the fitness level to regularly charge flights
06:50of stairs.
06:51Maybe not?
06:52Think again.
06:53It has its advantages.
06:54Salary vary by city and position, but in major cities like New York and LA, you'll clear
06:57six figures.
06:58You'll make at least $121,000 from day one in Los Angeles, but in New York you'll have
07:03to work for five years to get to $110,000 as a low-level firefighter.
07:07But then you get promoted on your way to chief and earn more at each level, over $300,000
07:11in some fire departments.
07:12The grunt is you're working in fire, putting yourself in danger, worrying about your co-workers,
07:16dealing with deeply distressed people who are watching their homes and offices burning,
07:20and you're also a paramedic, meaning you have to see terrible injuries from violence
07:23and witness other human loss.
07:25But you work days at a time, and then have chunks of time free, so you can travel and
07:28buy toys with the six figures you're earning, with solid job security, and you get to contribute
07:32to your community and truly help people every time you go to work.
07:35So, which of these high-paying jobs took you most by surprise?
07:38Would you consider working any of these jobs?
