Russia has reportedly launched a major counter-offensive against Ukrainian troops in Kursk, according to the U.S. nonprofit think tank, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

A senior Russian commander has claimed that 10 settlements in Kursk have been retaken.

The ISW notes that counterattacks began on September 10, with settlements northeast and south of Korenevo reportedly seized. However, the ISW cautions that it is “premature to draw conclusions” about the full impact of these actions.

Ukraine has not yet commented on these Russian claims. The counter-offensive comes after Moscow was caught off guard by Ukraine’s August incursion into Kursk, which aimed to seize the initiative and redirect Russian forces from the eastern front.
