Amazon has nearly 500 species at extinction risk

The Brazilian Amazon biome currently has 477 species at risk of extinction. Of these, 218 are fauna species and 259 are flora species native to the region, threatened by human interference with nature. Researchers stress the need for more frequent updates to this list, which today includes animals such as the jaguar, harpy eagle, Amazonian manatee, the monkey sauim-de-coleira (pied tamarin), and the Ararajuba bird (golden parakeet), as well as some trees species like Brazilian mahogany, rosewood, and Brazil nut tree. This tool is crucial for guiding public policies that help minimize further losses and monitor human actions such as deforestation, pollution, and fires, among other threats that add to the impacts of climate change that heavily affect ecosystems.

O bioma amazônico brasileiro tem atualmente 477 espécies ameaçadas de extinção. Destas, 218 são espécies da fauna e 259 da flora típicas da região, em risco por conta das interferências humanas na natureza. Pesquisadores avaliam que é preciso maior frequência na atualização dessa lista, que hoje inclui animais como a onça pintada, o gavião real, o peixe-boi, o sauim-de-coleira e a ararajuba, além de árvores como o mogno-brasileiro, o pau-rosa e a castanheira. A ferramenta é crucial para orientar políticas públicas que ajudem a minimizar mais perdas e monitorar ações humanas como o desmatamento, a poluição e as queimadas, entre outras ameaças que se somam aos efeitos das mudanças climáticas, que tanto impactam os ecossistemas.
