00:00You probably felt it, a magnitude 4.7 earthquake centered about two and a half miles northwest of Malibu,
00:08hitting at I believe it was 728 this morning, depth of seven miles, felt widely across Southern California.
00:16We were just listening to seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones and a few things that she mentioned that were interesting is
00:22a lot of you living on the west side really felt the more intense shaking, obviously those of you closer to Malibu,
00:27but really the whole greater Los Angeles area felt some kind of movement this morning,
00:32so possibly depending on where you were, you felt it too.
00:36Of course the question also that happens right after an earthquake, is this a foreshock?
00:41Dr. Lucy Jones talked about that as well.
00:43She said 95% chance that there will not be anything bigger following the one we just experienced.
00:49And the good news is so far no reports of damage, injury or death.
00:54And Dr. Jones was saying that typically you would see a moderate or significant damage at a magnitude of 5.0 or higher.
01:03This was below that at 4.7, but at seven miles of depth, it was enough to trigger enough energy for people to feel it,
01:11not just in the greater Los Angeles area, but all the way down into Orange County.
01:15We've been hearing reports from folks down in Orange County, east to Riverside County,
01:21and of course in the greater Los Angeles area as well.
01:24So folks feeling it widely across Southern California.
01:28We have, you know, our hardworking journalists in the newsroom were ready to get some video,
01:34and apparently we shot some stuff as it was happening.
01:37And if we want to roll some of that, we could show people what it looked like in our newsroom as this thing hit.
01:43That was Vera's mirror.
01:50Tell me over here. Yeah, right in here.
01:53Dude, that was crazy. It was the whole building shape.
01:56That's big. It was like, boom, boom. And then I felt like an app. Yeah.
02:00So good. An afterquake. Oh, yeah.
02:04Are you going to take that to send Tony? Yeah. OK.
02:08Well, now we're showing things that I don't know.
02:11I don't know if Vera wanted us to show her shoe collection.
02:16I know that's her cubby and apparently her mirror fell down.
02:20I think that was Tony Fote who jumped into action.
02:23Now a live picture from Sky 5 as we fly along the coast.
02:28I believe you're near Malibu. Rich Prickett. What are you seeing?
02:34OK, he's not ready, but anyway, I don't suspect he will see much.
02:39This was as we look at the coastline.
02:41Lucy Jones was telling us this was a strike slip kind of earthquake.
02:45And essentially what that means is you have two blocks of land and they're moving past each other.
02:50There are others where the land moves up and down.
02:53This was strike slip where essentially you have two plates coming together,
02:57two blocks of of earth and one moves one way and one's moving the other way.
03:04And when that happens, it generates energy and waves across the area.
03:10And the region and and that's what we felt.
03:13Yeah. And we've talked to a few viewers this morning and one of our viewers living in Malibu said it was quite strong.
03:21She really hadn't felt something that strong in quite some time.
03:24And then we talked to Lynn Spillman, wife of Eric Spillman, who lives in the Santa Monica area.
03:29And that mention of Dr. Lucy Jones saying those on the west side really felt that shaking.
03:34Lynn Spillman was saying how it was longer than any.
03:38She had time to kind of react and move throughout the house.
03:41We also have another viewer on the line with us, Victoria Alvarez.
03:44Victoria, good morning. Good morning, Jessica.
03:47Good morning. How are you? I'm well. How are you?
03:50Tell us where where you are and what it was like for you.
03:53I'm like maybe a mile away from Ventura. I'm in the Oxnard, California.
03:59Mm hmm. What'd you feel? And I felt that I was getting ready to do my bed.
04:04And somehow the pictures in the wall started to shake and move.
04:08I kind of got a little bit scared because, you know, I I've been through it.
04:14I know how I feel when the earthquake hit.
04:17And Victoria, do you have anyone in the house with you that what what was it like for them and the family?
04:24It's only me and my cat.
04:26Okay. How'd the cat react, Victoria? We always hear that.
04:29He's like, what's going on? He said not to move, you know?
04:34Yeah. Victoria, did anything fall off the walls or anything like that?
04:40Nothing fell from the wall. To say that my picture from my family,
04:45that didn't fall because it's really up in the wall.
04:49Yeah. But nothing fell. Nothing.
04:52Was it strong enough that it made you think, oh, I should get under my table or anything like that?
04:58Not really, because I know what to do when the earthquake hits.
05:03I stand at the door and wait for a while to stop shaking.
05:07Yeah. You know, it's funny that Dr. Jones has said recently that it's better to get under the table because in a really strong earthquake,
05:15if you stand at the door, the door is going to be flying back and forth and that can be dangerous.
05:20So just so for the future. But I'm glad you're okay.
05:25Yeah, I'm okay. Nothing happened. I have a TV that is on top of my dresser that didn't fall either.
05:31Oh, good.
05:32But mostly the only thing that did shake was the bed.
05:37Yeah. Victoria, did you talk to any friends or family that live in the area? What did they have to say?
05:42I haven't spoken to my aunt because she lives not too far from here.
05:49I think I know they felt it because my aunt goes to work at certain times.
05:55My neighbors, I haven't talked to them because they're either still in bed or watching TV.
06:02But mostly I'm the one that felt it because I was getting ready to get into the shower when it started to shake.
06:10Yeah. Well, Victoria, we're glad you're all right and we appreciate you letting us know what you experienced this morning.
06:16Thank you so much.
06:18You're very welcome.
06:19All right. Thanks, Victoria. I want to get up to Rich Prickett and Sky 5 HD.
06:23We launch the helicopter in a moment like this. I suspect, Rich, you're not seeing any damage.
06:29This was just a quote, just a four point seven.
06:33But you're up nonetheless to make sure there's nothing going going on up there.
06:38Where are you, Frank? We're flying the coastline here at Point Dune.
06:43So Zuma Beach, about four miles from the epicenter, which we're hearing was around Newton Canyon Road and Canaan Road.
06:51So that's along Canaan Road, just south of Mulholland is where the epicenter is.
06:58Boy, we had a beautiful, clean signal right until the moment that started speaking.
07:02But if it's up, up, if the epicenter is up near Canaan, you know, when you come between the San Fernando Valley and Malibu,
07:10you will be going through some canyon roads. And sometimes, especially after a rain,
07:15the the rocks can be become sort of loosened and the earth can become loosened.
07:20It will be interesting to see if any of that earth has rolled down the hill along the canyons, Malibu Canyon Road and Canaan.
07:30Rich, we got you back. We were just talking about the fact that sometimes, you know, especially after storms,
07:37we see some of the boulders tumbling down onto Canaan or to Malibu Canyon Road.
07:43And it'll be interesting to see if that has happened.
07:49Well, it'll be interesting when we can eventually establish.
07:53Well, here's the thing. I find it nerve wracking to go through those canyon roads just on a normal day.
07:58And I wonder if anybody driving through those canyon roads when that earthquake hit noticed it, felt it.
08:04Because, again, you were very close to where this earthquake originated in Malibu this morning, 4.7 magnitude.
08:13Beautiful shot from Rich's helicopter, but we're just not able to establish the signal this morning.
08:18I appreciate all the folks who are reaching out on X.
08:22This is another one that I'm getting from SoCal OD, who says, woke me up in bed Capistrano Beach,
08:31walls shaking, bed rolling. So, you know, that's quite a ways south, Capistrano Beach.
08:38I was looking for a message.
08:40Simi Valley, Mike says, shook pretty good there. Burbank Rancho near the Disney lot, Glenn felt it.
08:49Jeannie, animals, thought it was animals running in the attic in Anaheim Hills.
08:55Oh, no, that's problematic that animals are running in the attic.
08:58Well, that's what it sounded like there.
09:00Nicole Rose sent me a message.
09:02She said the alert woke me up, startled me.
09:04I was waiting for the shaking, didn't feel a thing.
09:06But my nephew in the next room felt it here in La Puente.
09:10Yeah. Sean in La Habra didn't feel a thing.
09:15And thanks for being part of her. Well, thanks.
09:17So thanks, Sean. Yeah. Or his morning. Yeah.
09:20Huntington Beach, little shake. Glassell Park felt it.
09:24I mean, really, folks did feel it strongly near, especially near the epicenter.
09:32Our own Christine Michelli or one of our executive producers in the evening was telling us that she said it was terrifying, actually.
09:41Thought that it was happening right under her feet.
09:44And, you know, she is like most of us who are longtime Southern California residents, veterans of feeling earthquakes.
09:55OK. Oh, oh. So, oh, Louie is on the phone with us from Loma Linda.
10:02Louie, I understand you just had a surgery and you felt it.
10:06Yeah, I'm at Loma Linda VA Medical Center in Loma Linda.
10:11Yeah, I'm lying in my hospital bed. Oh, gosh.
10:14Whoa. Louie, did did you already have your surgery? Are you waiting?
10:20Yeah. No, I had it yesterday around four o'clock.
10:24Oh, my goodness. Louie, that's one of those things.
10:27Honestly, I think about I don't know if anyone else does that.
10:30If you're you know, if an earthquake happens in the middle of a procedure where things have to be quite still.
10:35And I've that's crossed my mind from time to time.
10:38Thankfully, you were in the bed recuperating. How are you feeling this morning?
10:42I'm good, of course. I'm in a little pain.
10:46Right. How's the hospital food?
10:49I just finished my breakfast. You know, we know.
10:56Did it did your coffee or your juice shake back and forth?
11:00Or did you notice anything like that?
11:03No, actually, no, I did not.
11:06No, none of that. Just this wobbly bed was shaking.
11:11And I'm thinking to myself, yeah, that's an earthquake.
11:15And Louie, how did everyone in the hospital react? Nurses, doctors, the staff?
11:20I asked. The nurse came in and helped me out.
11:23And he didn't feel a thing he said.
11:26Too busy maybe moving.
11:29I called my wife in Banning. She's going to be on her way here.
11:32And she said she didn't feel anything either.
11:34Oh, that's interesting. So that's that's out for folks who don't know Banning.
11:38That's out along the 10 freeway as you're heading out to the desert.
11:43We had heard folks as far east as Moreno Valley.
11:46And now you there in Loma Linda feeling it.
11:49But it's interesting that she did not feel it in Banning.
11:53So that's that maybe that gives us a sense of how far out it was felt.
11:58We know it's felt south all the way down to Capistrano Beach.
12:02Well, we are happy to hear that you're OK, Louie, and we appreciate your call.
12:08Thank you. Thank you so much. All right. Have a good day. Rest up.
12:12We have on the phone with us someone from Margaret Stewart from the fire department.
12:18Margaret, good morning. Good morning to you.
12:22What can you tell us? Well, as you know, we experienced the updated four point seven magnitude earthquake at about seven twenty eight this morning.
12:32So your Los Angeles City Fire Department entered into earthquake mode.
12:37And that's a process by which all 106 of our neighborhood fire stations conduct a strategic survey,
12:44not only by land, but our marine division by sea and our air ops by air.
12:49And they'll examine all the critical infrastructure and areas of local concern within their districts.
12:55They then report through their chain of command. This is happening through all 470 square miles.
13:02And those reports are consolidated at the highest level and then will determine if there is any damage and what if any actions need to be taken.
13:13Margaret, does that happen for every magnitude of earthquake or only when it's a certain magnitude where you where you take these surveys,
13:21like you said, air, land and sea to examine critical infrastructure?
13:27There isn't a specific number. It's not like at X magnitude we do it.
13:32It's more if it's noticeable, you know, if there's an earthquake that is felt within the city of L.A.,
13:39then we're likely going to initiate earthquake mode.
13:43Have you received any phone calls from anyone saying that that they've had any damage or need help in any way?
13:52Fortunately, not. We have no reports of damage either from our resources in the field or from any 911 call.
14:00Well, that's good to know. You know, that was our initial thought that that at this level,
14:06there probably wouldn't be. And Dr. Jones, Lucy Jones, in fact, said that below 5.0 magnitude,
14:15that we should not expect any significant damage or or even moderate damage.
14:22And that seems to be the report that we're getting from our viewers.
14:27Folks have have said have shown us a video of things that have fallen off the shelves and off the walls or that sort of thing.
14:35But no reports of significant damage. Although I would imagine, Margaret, that that in looking at infrastructure,
14:43especially as you move to the west there, that, you know, water lines, sewage lines,
14:51those things we may not know yet how they've been affected. But that be accurate.
14:58Yeah, that's entirely possible. If we do, you know,
15:03later run on anything that looks like a broken water main or some kind of underground leaking,
15:10then obviously our partners, LADWP, would be called in and they would be the ones to further investigate that.
15:18But as you said, fortunately, this is a lower magnitude,
15:22but it also serves as a good reminder to be prepared for drop, cover and hold on your children and the elderly are most at risk.
15:34So checking in on neighbors, making sure your kids know what to do.
15:39We always want to emphasize those learning points when we have an earthquake like this that doesn't cause damage.
15:47But it is a good reminder that we must always be prepared.
15:50Those of us who lived through Northridge will recall that on Balboa in the valley,
15:57there was a gas line break that went into the air.
16:01And then, of course, it ignited and it was quite a dramatic scene.
16:05Do you feel like since Northridge that we have upgraded the infrastructure enough to withstand that sort of situation?
16:14Or are we still vulnerable?
16:19Well, the specifics on this would be our building and safety department.
16:26They're going to be the experts.
16:28But generally speaking, our new construction obviously has standards that it needs to meet.
16:34They're far exceed older construction.
16:37And while some modifications are required, some buildings don't have that required retrofit.
16:47So it's going to vary depending on the age of the building you're in.
16:52But residents should always know where are my utilities located?
16:57How do I shut off the gas if it's needed?
17:00Very simple things that they can do to help protect them and their families.
17:05And if they go to our website, lafd.org safety, they can download our free emergency preparedness guide,
17:13which gives them a pictograph so they can look at it and understand, OK, this is what I need to do.
17:19It's a very good point just to know what to do in a time when you need to do it and be prepared in that way.
17:26Margaret Stewart, L.A. City Fire, we really appreciate your time this morning.
17:29Thank you so much.
17:33We're getting reports that just as we were discussing earlier that on the Canyon Roads,
17:38given the fact that the epicenter was just to the northwest of Malibu, that we might see some rocks onto the roads, some boulders.
17:47Kirk Hawkins in our traffic center.
17:49Kirk, I understand you're getting some reports of just that sort of activity.
17:53Yeah, absolutely.
17:54In fact, we made a map.
17:55Producer Tommy made this map to give you an idea of exactly where we're hearing this is causing a problem.
18:01This is the CHP telling us that some large boulders and rocks are now on Malibu Canyon, either inside or outside of the tunnel.
18:09That's right before Payuma Road.
18:11As you know, there's the tunnels there as you head down Malibu Canyon.
18:15And this area is actually not too far away from where senior executive producer Christine Michelli lives.
18:22And she was telling us that it was a really long and scary feeling when the earthquake hit.
18:29And, of course, Malibu Canyon isn't too far away from the epicenter.
18:32So just as you were speculating earlier, Frank, definitely getting some reports from CHP about large rocks and boulders.
18:41You know, Canaan Doom, Topanga, also some nearby Canyon Roads that you might want to be careful with if you're traveling.
18:48But that's the latest report that we have is, again, it's right before Payuma Road in one of the tunnels on Malibu Canyon Road.
18:56The reports of some large rocks and boulders there blocking the roadway.
19:00Okay, Kirk, we thank you for that.
19:02Sky 5 is headed that way, too, just to check out whether or not anyone is stuck due to rocks like that falling into the roadway.
19:09We want to talk to David Levy, a resident in Malibu, joining us this morning.
19:13David, good morning.
19:15Good morning. How are you?
19:17We're fine. How are you? What was it like for you this morning?
19:21A little shaken up, to say the least.
19:24You know, we had experiences about 7.28 in the morning this morning.
19:30And we're up here above Carbon Beach, right on the hill.
19:36And some picture frames fell off the studio.
19:39The shaking was very intense from where we were at.
19:42So, I mean, I would have assumed it felt more like a six-point earthquake rather than a 4.7, 4.8.
19:50But, you know, it was very scary, to say the least.
19:54Reminiscent of the Northridge quake.
19:56Oh, so you lived through Northridge.
19:58So you remember that feeling.
20:00So it felt the same for you.
20:02It did. It was a little shorter.
20:04I believe when Northridge hit, we had two back-to-back.
20:07Or, you know, one in a strong aftershock.
20:11This one just kept going.
20:13So this was, I could estimate, probably about 20 to 30 seconds of shaking.
20:18Wow.
20:19And so that's interesting that you said it felt like a 6.0 magnitude to you.
20:25And you were a little bit surprised that it was only 4.7.
20:27But you are so close to the epicenter there, David.
20:30Did you talk to anyone else in the neighborhood?
20:32Anyone living nearby and what they experienced this morning?
20:35I have not yet.
20:37It's still so early.
20:39I'm on the border of where I feel guilty waking people up in case they slept through it.
20:44But I find that hard to imagine.
20:46Right.
20:47And any damage or anything fall off the walls, David?
20:51Yeah, yeah.
20:52We lost a few picture frames.
20:54And a camera lens actually fell off the shelf as well.
20:58So we lost a little bit of equipment.
21:00But nothing major.
21:01No structural damage.
21:03At least at first glance.
21:05Good.
21:06And, David, you have experienced other earthquakes.
21:09This one, you said Northridge, you know, similar in the way that it felt to you.
21:15I would say in the last, you know, 10 years or so, is this one of the stronger ones you've experienced?
21:20Absolutely.
21:21I mean, I don't know if you remember.
21:23I think it was back in February in Malibu we experienced another tremor.
21:27Probably about the same size.
21:29But for some reason this one did feel stronger.
21:32There was the initial jolt followed by shaking that was consistent for about 15 to 20 seconds as it kind of tapered off.
21:43And now what do you do?
21:44Because I do feel like when this happens, it's hard to kind of get back into your rhythm of the morning, what you were doing.
21:50So now what are we doing with the rest of the morning?
21:54Oh, got to get back to editing.
21:56That's what we do here.
21:57We have a movie studio.
21:58So we're working on a few projects.
22:00And you know how those deadlines go.
22:02Very good, David.
22:03David Levy in Malibu.
22:04Thanks, man.
22:05We're glad you're okay.
22:08Unfortunately, your camera lens may be damaged, but hopefully you can replace that.
22:13We appreciate you.
22:14Yes, it's all replaceable.
22:17You guys have a great morning.
22:18Thanks, David.
22:19You too.
22:21Linda Ruiz is in Lytle Creek.
22:26Linda, good morning.
22:28And what did you experience?
22:30Oh, good morning.
22:32Yes, I experienced it was a waving type of earthquake.
22:38And being that we live up in the Lytle Creek area, a lot of the homes are cabin, rural area.
22:45And I tell you, my cabin really creaked.
22:48It was kind of scary.
22:51But we did feel it way up here in Lytle Creek area.
22:58So nothing was damaged.
23:00But it was just a little nerve-wracking that there may be a follow-up to that.
23:06We're just hoping it's nothing more.
23:09Other than that, it was just a rolling feeling.
23:13And I felt it really well up here.
23:16And I think a lot of our community neighbors have felt it as well.
23:21Linda, there was a fire in Lytle Creek yesterday.
23:26Yes, that one's called Bridge Fire.
23:29We are surrounded by 102,000 acres of fire.
23:34And we're right in the middle of the canyon.
23:39And so we're surrounded by the Bridge Fire and then the one up in Wrightwood where there was evacuation.
23:48We are prepared in case we need to be evacuated.
23:52If the Bridge Fire is not able to reach us, we'll be doing fine.
23:58But on top of that, then the earthquake this morning, it was like, oh, my goodness.
24:04Well, I was going to say, Linda, you're already kind of on pins and needles when it comes to the fire and whether or not you need to evacuate.
24:10And then an earthquake hits, it kind of is tough on the nerves, I would imagine.
24:15Yes, and our sun is very red.
24:18It's not a normal color.
24:21Everything is shaded in red.
24:23Yeah, due to the smoke and everything.
24:25It's kind of eerie.
24:27It's eerie.
24:28And then with the earthquake, it's like, OK.
24:32It was just a little nerve wracking this morning.
24:34Sorry.
24:35Well, you probably don't need that second cup of coffee this morning.
24:38I think you're probably awake.
24:40Yes, exactly.
24:43Well, Linda, we appreciate it, and we really do feel for you with having the fire nearby and then the earthquake.
24:52It's got to be unsettling.
24:54And to see the sky looking the way it is, it's got to be OK.
24:59Yes, we are very hopeful and really appreciate our firemen and personnel that are really protecting our community up here.
25:09It's just incredible with all the work they have been doing.
25:13I could not even imagine.
25:16And luckily, we've had a nice cool down.
25:18It's 53 degrees up here in Lila Creek at the moment.
25:22Excellent.
25:23Yes, so that's a great help for our firemen to try and battle this fire.
25:27It's so true, Linda.
25:28We needed that cooler weather.
25:30Well, all the best to you and your family.
25:32Praying for your safety, Linda.
25:34Great.
25:35Thank you so much.
25:36I appreciate you all and all your newscasts.
25:39It's so awesome.
25:41I listen to you every morning.
25:43Oh, well, thank you very much, Linda.
25:45Thanks, Linda.
25:46We're joined right now by a friend of the Buckleys, Jennifer Asher, who is in Malibu.
25:51Jennifer, good morning.
25:53What did you experience?
25:54Good morning.
25:55Well, I was kind of working from bed this morning.
26:00Our dog, Zoe, was on the bed with me, and it really, like, was a serious, scary jolt.
26:06I went through the earthquake in San Francisco in 89.
26:10I went through the Northridge earthquake.
26:12There was a quake here in Malibu a few months ago that was scary.
26:17But this was, you know, really serious, and it was one of those things where you're like, where is this going?
26:24Right.
26:25Is this going to become the same thing?
26:28You don't know because it's in it, and it's so strong.
26:31So, you know, you always feel that sense of relief when it subsides.
26:38But my dog will not leave my side.
26:41She's so freaked out.
26:43Zoe's a really smart dog, by the way.
26:45She is really smart and super cute and cuddly, so thank God I have her.
26:49Does Zoe like Frank or is that?
26:51Love Frank.
26:53Zoe loves everybody, though.
26:55I don't know why.
26:57But, yeah, she's kind of a goofy girl, but she's pretty scared, and she is not going anywhere.
27:04So I'm just glad it was over quickly.
27:07But, yeah, there's, you know, picture frames and stuff that are kind of nothing's fallen, but everything looks askew.
27:15And, Jennifer, you do these wonderful sculptures.
27:19Is everything okay?
27:21Nothing has fallen.
27:23Everything is secure.
27:24Yeah, no.
27:26They were good.
27:27So it was just a scare, and it was very close to where we lived.
27:31So that was terrifying.
27:33Gosh, and, Jennifer, you mentioned you lived through San Francisco, like in the 80s, and Northridge.
27:39How would you say this one compares?
27:42I mean, honestly, I would say that this was similar but super short compared.
27:49You know, the other ones felt like they were, like, a minute long.
27:53This was not that long.
27:55However, it's just scary because you don't know what direction it's going to go in.
27:59Yeah, and I want to just tell our viewers that we're looking on the left side of a live picture of a fire truck going along Canaan Doom Road.
28:07We are hearing reports that some boulders have fallen onto Malibu Canyon Road, so that may be blocked.
28:15And our Rich Brickett and team are up there scanning the canyon roads for us, and we'll get over Malibu Canyon in a second or two to show that.
28:26But, Jennifer, thank you so much for giving us your firsthand account of what happened.
28:32Glad you're okay, and glad that Zoe's good, too.
28:36I'll send your regards.
28:38All right.
28:39Thanks, Jennifer.
28:40Take care.
28:41We have on the phone with us Candido Merez from Porter Ranch.
28:46Good morning.
28:47Good morning, Jessica, Frank.
28:50I lived through the 94.
28:53My house was destroyed.
28:55We had to crawl out of our home, and this one scared me more than any one of the other ones because it was deep.
29:02It felt like it was really deep in the earth, and it lasted longer, and I'm saying, holy cow.
29:08And what did I have?
29:10I had my remote right next to me to turn to KTLA because, I'll tell you, you guys have gotten me through a lot of stuff.
29:17And where is Mark Christie?
29:19Do you tell him we miss him, we love him?
29:21We will.
29:22You know, believe me, the losses you guys have taken at San Ruben, I'll tell you, every morning I miss that man.
29:32So, Mark Christie, you come back, and KTLA, thank you guys.
29:37Well, Candido, Mark heard you, and he just texted, and he's in Northridge, and he says he felt it, but he's doing fine, so he appreciated the shout-out.
29:45Well, I look forward to seeing him at our favorite sandwich place over on Mason.
29:49You know, this guy is the nicest human being you'll ever meet.
29:53Yes, he is.
29:54And that is why all of you at KTLA.
29:56What's the name of the sandwich spot?
29:57What's the sandwich spot?
29:59San Carlos, I think it is.
30:02It's on Mason and Devonshire.
30:05Oh, excellent.
30:07Yeah, but can I say something quick to Jessica?
30:09Yes, sure.
30:11Jessica, I met you a long time ago.
30:13You were with your family at the Hollywood Bowl.
30:15My wife was alive at that time, and my wife recognized you.
30:19She had dementia, but somehow she recognized you, and she goes, there's Jessica.
30:24And we looked at you, and I think we kind of stunned you, and you were so gracious to my wife, and I want to thank you for that, because she died soon after that.
30:35Oh, Candido.
30:37I don't know why.
30:38You and her looked a lot alike, and again, KTLA, you guys are my mornings, my nights.
30:44I go to bed at night on KTLA, so thank you guys, and again, prepare yourself.
30:50It's coming.
30:51It's coming.
30:52I'm telling you, we're going to get the big one within the next year.
30:55Candido, you know what?
30:57After an earthquake like this, and the way you described what you lived through in 94,
31:02we didn't even talk about the fact that you said your house was destroyed during that earthquake.
31:07You've been through them here in Southern California.
31:10We appreciate your – you got a lot of gusto, Candido.
31:15Yeah, and we appreciate your loyal viewership.
31:18We do so much.
31:19I'd like to say one more thing.
31:21You know, we had a councilman, Mr. Bernson.
31:26He was the one that pushed after the 94 earthquake that we – what's it called?
31:33We just fix our homes up and make them stronger, and we did that.
31:37We strapped and sheared and – Hal Bertson, I'm sorry.
31:42But he was the one that pushed for all of this retrofitting,
31:46and thank God for it because when it rocks and rolls, I'm sitting here and I'm thinking,
31:51thanks, Hal.
31:52Thank you, God.
31:53And Mark Christie, I miss you, buddy.
31:55God bless you, and I look forward to seeing you at our sandwich place.
31:58Yes, sir.
31:59Candido, we appreciate you, man.
32:00Thanks very much.
32:01Thank you, Candido.
32:02Thank you, guys.
32:03All right.
32:04And we should say, you know, I think Candido makes a really good point.
32:06Yes, there's the retrofit, but there are some simple things that we can all do
32:11and things that I've been doing since Northridge.
32:15Bookcases and things like that, we strap them to the wall.
32:19We no longer have framed things over our bed because, folks will remember,
32:26those things came right down on top of beds in Northridge.
32:30So there are some simple things like that, putting your shoes next to your bed
32:34so that when something happens, you can slip into shoes when you're walking through a house
32:38that has shattered glass and things on the ground.
32:43I took all the glass out of the picture frames.
32:45You know, the frames are up, but the glass is out.
32:48And a lot of things for that reason, if you wake up in the middle of the night and something.
32:51And they always talk about those things that seem small in the moment,
32:55but walking through glass becomes a real problem,
32:58especially if you have children in the house who aren't aware that that could be an issue.
33:02So little things like that can make the difference.
33:06We had Rich Prickett flying through the canyon roads over between the San Fernando Valley and Malibu,
33:14and we saw a firetruck going along Canaan Doom.
33:17So at least that portion of Canaan Doom was open where we were looking at it.
33:22But, Kirk Hawkins, you had some reports regarding Malibu Canyon Road and boulders in the road.
33:28Do you have any new information on that?
33:30Yeah, just a slight update, Frank.
33:33Public Works has been advised about the boulders, the rocks in the road,
33:37and they're headed to the scene to clear them.
33:40We don't know exactly how long that's going to take and no other new information.
33:45But just as a reminder, the CHP was reporting that some large boulders,
33:50some large rocks came crashing down onto Malibu Canyon Road inside or just outside the tunnel.
33:56We're not sure exactly.
33:58It's one of the tunnels that's right before Paiuma Road.
34:01And as Christina Michelli was telling us, she lives up the street not far from here,
34:07and she was talking about how intense the shaking was.
34:10This isn't too far away from there, not too far away from the epicenter.
34:14And so just that added warning there as well.
34:17And so, again, it's the Malibu Canyon Road just before Paiuma Road.
34:21The tunnel there is where they made this discovery.
34:25So please allow a little extra time to get out there.
34:28And, you know, since we're all talking about tips, one tip that I heard recently
34:32is always make sure that your gas tank is close to full
34:36because a lot of people after Northridge earthquake didn't have full gas tanks,
34:41and, you know, that's not the kind of place you want to be.
34:44So something to keep on top of as you're preparing for the future as well.
34:48Well, that's the latest from me. Back to you.
34:52Okay, Kirk, we thank you for that.
34:53And, of course, we'll continue to follow, like Kirk was saying,
34:56the fact that maybe some rocks and some boulders have slid onto the road in the Malibu area.
35:00We do have a statement from L.A. Mayor Karen Bass.
35:04I think we're going to pull that up for you, let you know what the mayor of Los Angeles
35:08said this morning about our earthquake.
35:10Here we go.
35:11A preliminary magnitude 5.1 earthquake, which has now been downgraded to a 4.7,
35:17near Malibu shook the Los Angeles area this morning.
35:19Our LAFD has activated to conduct its routine survey of the city
35:24to assess for any damages city teams will continue to monitor.
35:28And that is what we learned this morning from Margaret Stewart.
35:31We talked with L.A. City Fire.
35:33And when an earthquake hits like this that is widely felt throughout Los Angeles,
35:37they immediately activate and they go by land, air, sea to survey the area
35:43to make sure critical infrastructure has not been affected.
35:47And then they collect all those reports and they bring back the data from, you know,
35:52from a situation like today.
35:54Yeah, 106 LAFD fire stations.
35:57It's called the strategic survey and they go around.
36:01So if you see firefighters going around your neighborhood looking at the various things
36:06or you see fire trucks rolling, it's not that they're necessarily responding to an incident per se.
36:14They are literally just going through the neighborhood to make sure that your neighborhood is safe
36:20and that the infrastructure is safe.
36:22You saw there a moment ago we had a live picture up from Rich Prickett in Sky 5.
36:26Hard at times as you're going through the mountain areas to keep that signal,
36:31but what he is doing as he flies through the Malibu Canyon area is trying to locate that area
36:39where we have been told some boulders have gone down.
36:42Kirk Hawkins is on that.
36:44There's one of the tunnels there.
36:46I see the traffic just flowing through that particular tunnel,
36:51but the tunnel in question is near Paiuma and Malibu Canyon Road.
36:56And so when those boulders come down, and it's not something that,
37:03it happens on a fairly regular basis actually that boulders can end up near the road or on the road,
37:09but an event like this might have caused a few more than usual to come down.
37:15Always a good idea to be safe as you go through those tunnels.
