Transcript
00:00Now, how do you feel about yourself?
00:03Totally dissed, homie.
00:08That's why homie don't play that.
00:10Welcome to Miss Mojo.
00:12And today we're counting down our picks for the top 10 funniest in-living-color sketches.
00:16Hey, where you going?
00:20Now, don't be ashamed just because you're a white boy.
00:21I mean, I don't mind having a little cream in my coffee.
00:24Oh, my Phil, it's our vacation!
00:26Baby, disaster has a real good travel engine.
00:29And what is he doing now?
00:31This is what they call chillin', Alan.
00:36Well, it is kinda cold in the studio today.
00:39Oh, no, no, not that kind of chillin'.
00:41He's just relaxing and getting used to his environment.
00:43For this list, we'll be ranking the most classic, enduring, and hilarious skits from the classic 90s comedy show.
00:49We'll be looking at both one-off sketches and the ones that came back to make us laugh over and over again.
00:55What's your favorite in-living-color sketch?
00:57Let us know in the comments.
01:00Number 10.
01:02Defrosting Vanilla Ice
01:04Out of all the stars in living color introduced to a prime-time audience,
01:08a little comic by the name of Jim Carrey is one of their most notable.
01:12Yo, VIP!
01:14Let's kick it!
01:20While he had plenty of highlights on the show,
01:22he absolutely nailed it as a musical parody of Vanilla Ice and his hit song, Ice Ice Baby.
01:29Carrey commits to the clothes, hair, and outrageous dance moves.
01:39He perfectly exaggerates Ice's already-out-there personal style,
01:43while giving us a musical performance we'll never forget.
01:47In a sea of excellent musical parody sketches on In Living Color,
01:50this Ice parody floats to the top.
01:57Number 9.
01:58Benita Battrell Spills the Tea
02:00Gossip?
02:02Heavens no!
02:03Benita Battrell wouldn't dream of speaking out of turn about a soul.
02:08I ain't one to gossip, so you ain't heard that from me.
02:10Except that's exactly what this character did, to exaggerated comedic effect.
02:16Kim Wayans encapsulates every local neighborhood gossip perfectly with this dirt-dishing homebody.
02:21Benita Battrell couldn't help but speak directly to the camera about basically everyone she knows.
02:27You're the smartest little thing on TV!
02:32Dumbest little thing is more like it.
02:34Take her three days to watch 48 Hours.
02:36The best running gag in these skits is that she tries to avoid talking badly about Ms. Jenkins,
02:42but usually slips up for one hilarious final punchline.
02:45Ooh, we almost lost Ms. Jenkins, honey. That was a close shave.
02:53And speaking of close shaves, she could use one.
02:57That woman's got so much facial hair, she looks like Chewbacca with a weave.
03:00Number 8. Karate Instructor Bob Jackson
03:04Jim Carrey's back again to excel at what he does better than nearly any comic out there,
03:10physical stunts.
03:12If there's one running theme throughout Carrey's various characters on In Living Color,
03:16it's their tendency to hurt, injure, or otherwise maim themselves just doing their jobs.
03:22Welcome to the first meeting of complete self-defense for women.
03:27Bob Jackson, karate instructor, was no exception.
03:30He always seemed to get pushed to the brink of mortal injury.
03:33In Jackson's self-defense class for women, he ends up getting stabbed by one of his students.
03:38I'm fine. I shifted my internal organs to avoid the knife.
03:45Carrey's over-the-top reaction absolutely works within the realm of the character's
03:49larger-than-life persona.
03:51You see, you're still bending your elbows.
03:56You've got to keep your arm completely straight.
04:03That's the whole key.
04:04Number 7. The Head Detective Gets On The Case
04:08The laws of physics are thrown out the window for this hilarious procedural parody involving
04:12a different sort of detective.
04:14A head detective, in fact.
04:16Damon Wayans plays a short gumshoe that only has a head with tiny feet and arms, and well,
04:22that's about it.
04:23Why do I always have to wear the disguise?
04:25Because you're the best.
04:26You're the master head.
04:27I mean, who's the department going to get me?
04:29A lesser sketch comedy show might take this ridiculous premise and only rely on physical
04:34comedy bits.
04:35Luckily, the In Living Color writers knew exactly what to parody about the classic crime
04:40stories to make the head detective sketches take themselves just seriously enough to be
04:45smart and funny.
04:46Just go check out the back.
04:47I'll keep an eye on things here.
04:48Okay.
04:49Wait, wait, wait.
04:50We need a code word that you can yell if you get in trouble.
04:53How about help, you idiot?
04:55Somehow, the show and audience suspend their disbelief about the gag and enjoy the side-splittingly
05:01hilarious head detective.
05:02Looks like the game's over, huh, chief?
05:05I just want to know one thing.
05:07Why'd you frame me?
05:09I had to.
05:11Number 6. The Headleaves
05:13In this world, there's the average hard-working American family, and then there's the Headleaves.
05:18I work 15 jobs and I don't have time for your foolishness.
05:21When I come home, I'm tired, damn it.
05:23Listen, you think you're the only one who work hard?
05:26I got nine jobs myself, you know.
05:28Plus, I have to do all the cooking and the cleaning and the washing around here, not
05:32to mention the welding.
05:33This family is notorious for working a ridiculous amount of jobs.
05:36They also can't fathom the shame when their daughter, Margaret, starts dating a boy with
05:40gasp, only one job.
05:42How many jobs he got to make $100,000?
05:45Only one, he's a doctor.
05:47One job!
05:49One job to go and date a boy with one job!
05:52I hear it.
05:53This may seem like a one-note premise, however, the In Living Color cast nails it as usual
05:59thanks to their commitment to the characters.
06:01The fact that the Headleaves sketch wasn't just a one-and-done was a testament to the
06:05fact that the viewers wanted to see how the family was getting by, week after week.
06:09How long will he be off his feet?
06:11Off his feet?
06:12That's what got him here in the first place.
06:14He had a hemorrhoid the size of a coconut on his behind.
06:18What do you prescribe?
06:20I prescribe ten jobs.
06:21Ten jobs?
06:22That's right, ten jobs a day to keep a doctor away.
06:255.
06:26Anton Jackson
06:28Every member of the Wayans family came up with recurring characters and sketches for
06:32us to enjoy.
06:33Damon Wayans was particularly great at coming up with the iconic Anton Jackson, a homeless
06:38man with a very memorable way of speaking.
06:53His unique take on the character was able to fit easily in a bunch of different hilarious
06:57scenarios.
06:58We saw him appear everywhere from Thanksgiving dinner to a military recruitment office.
07:09Anton even takes a jab at home improvement shows along the way.
07:13While he may be strange at times, we couldn't help but laugh every time.
07:284.
07:29Black World
07:30In Living Color didn't always deal with serious issues, but Black World was one awesome
07:36exception.
07:39What are you doing?
07:41I'm sitting and waiting and being quiet.
07:45Takiyah Crystal Kimah led this funny and topical sketch.
07:48She plays a little girl who's waiting for her mother to finish cleaning a movie theater
07:52so they can go home at last.
07:54During the sketch, she presents her fantasy land of Black World to the audience.
07:58In Black World, all the black people have the money and your mother doesn't have to
08:06stay up in the theater and clean up late at night while you have to sit and wait and be
08:10quiet.
08:11Kimah uses this construct to reference some of the daily struggles faced by the black
08:15community.
08:16She also juxtaposes those hardships with an idealized society of inclusion and acceptance.
08:22It's a sketch that pulls on the heartstrings just as much now as it did back in season
08:27one.
08:28Oh, and when you go to the store, the white people don't follow you around and ask you
08:32if you have some money.
08:33Like, they know you don't have any money because your mother didn't give you any money because
08:37she didn't have any money.
08:41Our next entry is as controversial now as it was upon its debut in the very first episode
08:46of In Living Color.
08:47Men On, starring David Alan Greer and Damon Wayans as Antoine Merriweather and Blaine
08:52Edwards.
08:53Three words, fabulism.
08:55Boy, I hope I look that good when I'm 40.
09:02They both played into stereotypes of gay men while reviewing movies and other subjects
09:08on a weekly basis.
09:09The pair's rating system and the witty repartee between Wayans and Greer were a hit with viewers
09:14at the time.
09:15And you know, I found that those padded shoulders were just too Joan Crawford.
09:20And speaking of old fish, what about those cheerleaders?
09:28However, the men's performances, while good, still strike a nerve among many thanks to
09:32how gay men were perceived then and how they still are today.
09:36Well, our next piece is truly a work of art.
09:40Yes, it is.
09:41It's Michelangelo's Statue of David.
09:45Gasping, swoon, I just caught the vapors.
09:52Fire Marshal Bill was arguably one of Carrey's best-loved breakout characters from his tenure
09:56on In Living Color.
09:57I know what you're thinking.
09:59We're all perfectly safe in this classroom, right?
10:02Right.
10:03Wrong.
10:04This firefighter was similar to Carrey's Bob Jackson character in that he was always on
10:08the receiving end of some kind of disaster by the sketch's climax.
10:15Oh my gosh, I hope he's okay.
10:22Never better.
10:23In Bill's case, however, his damage was usually far more explosive and even more exaggerated
10:28than the karate instructor's.
10:30Carrey's character also boasted his own witty catchphrase.
10:33Let me show you something.
10:35Right before things went haywire.
10:37Did you know that deep sea fishing is the number one cause of cruise ship casualties?
10:41Let me show you something.
10:43This is one of the sketches that didn't need an elaborate setup.
10:46Every time Fire Marshal Bill rolled in, we were ready to laugh.
10:50Before we name our number one pick, here are a few other honorable mentions that had you
10:53crack it up back in the day.
10:55Velma Mulholland.
10:56A film noir dame out of time.
10:58May I see your license, please?
11:01So you want to play rough, do you?
11:05Sure, copper.
11:06I've got nothing to hide.
11:08Read it in white.
11:09Make a Death Wish Foundation.
11:11Charles Bronson makes dreams come true.
11:13Can I kick the ball, Mr. Bronson?
11:16I'd like to see someone try to stop you.
11:19Oswald Bates and Barbara Bush.
11:21Booked on phonics worked for him.
11:23Thank you, Mrs. Bush.
11:25Before I could read, I was forced to rob convenience stores for a living.
11:29But since joining the literacy program, a whole new world has been opened up to me.
11:33Embezzlement.
11:35The Wrath of Farrakhan.
11:37Bill Shatner, eat your heart out.
11:39What do you want?
11:42I've come to warn your crew.
11:45Warn your crew.
11:46Of their enslavement.
11:48Enslavement.
11:49Aboard this vessel.

12:06Number 1.
12:07Homie Da Clown.
12:08We're willing to bet that you've never met an entertainer as unpredictable
12:13as Homie Da Clown.
12:14Homie, Homie, Homie, Homie, Homie, Homie, Homie, Hom-
12:20Played to comedic perfection by Damon Wayans,
12:22this clown was actually a criminal serving out his debt to the community.
12:26Unfortunately, he seemed to have a really short fuse
12:29when it came to the people he was supposed to entertain.
12:31What y'all want me to do first?
12:33Ah!
12:34Get on Homie's bad side, and boom!
12:47An unwilling guest will get hit upside the head with a tennis ball and a sock.
12:51Dwayne's catchphrase, Homie don't play that, caught on almost immediately.
13:05Everyone wanted to hear him say those legendary words, as he tried his best to grin and bear
13:09the sentence of his work release program.
