00:00In this activity, I'm going to ask you to read some words aloud.
00:04You may have seen some of the words before and others will be new to you.
00:09You should try to read each word, but don't worry if you can't.
00:13If it helps you, you may sound out the letters before you say the word.
00:19Let's have a go at reading some words.
00:22And on the side, some of them are not real words.
00:25You see this little monster, okay?
00:27That means they are nonsense words.
00:31Now we're going to start reading the words in the activity
00:34and I'm going to take some notes, okay?
00:37Can you read the words for me?
00:41So the Year 1 Phonics Check is an online check that is done for all Year 1 students.
00:46It consists of 20 questions of real words and 20 questions of pseudo words
00:52or made-up words that give us an idea of how a student decodes.
00:57We're going to get that data in real time, which is really helpful.
01:00We've got a number of assessment processes set up here at Maribyrnong,
01:03but this will add another layer of data that we'll be able to access
01:06and better meet student needs.
01:08Yeah, so there's about 20 schools that are part of the pilot,
01:11but all ACT schools will be on board next year doing the Year 1 Phonics Check.
