00:0021 Pathways to Self-Mastery.
00:08Mindfulness is a buzzword that has gained widespread attention with people advocating
00:13for its benefits in overcoming addictions, anxiety, depression, you name it.
00:23Others tend to associate mindfulness as quite an important part of finding themselves on
00:28their spiritual journey.
00:33These 21 Pathways of Self-Mastery are designed to help you create a mindful life from top
00:39to bottom, from outside to inside.
00:47Mindfulness and self-mastery really are about the art of bringing attention to the present
00:53moment.
00:56Every time we are mindful, we confront reality and life's gravity head-on without relinquishing
01:04to the body-heart-mind's instinct to just run and hide.
01:14When you have eventually cultivated self-mastery, you possess the power to govern yourself in
01:20any circumstance, propelling yourself forward with passion and determination towards your
01:26objectives.
01:28You become aware of your purpose and wield the self-discipline required to act deliberately
01:34with unwavering focus and integrity.
01:39So let's now delve into these simple 21 Pathways to Self-Mastery and start to ignite our passion
01:48as we practice the art of self-realization every day of our lives.
01:58The mind is a slippery little beast.
02:00It operates largely on memory and complicated neurological maps.
02:06These maps allow us to navigate the world using past experience and memory as our compass.
02:13Every heightened emotion in particular that we have ever experienced is an anchor that
02:17allows us to react with lightning speed to our external environments.
02:23The whole system works like no one's business, but like any supercomputer, it has its flaws.
02:30The programs get old, bugs develop.
02:35Self-mastery gets us to the point of consciousness that this whole slippery process exists, really,
02:41and it's not who we are.
02:43We are far, far more than our mental processes.
02:46We are consciousness itself.
02:50We are spiritual beings having a human experience.
03:00Let's remember that mindfulness is a practice, and if we want to play the guitar like Van
03:04Halen, we're going to need a lot of practice.
03:09It is no different with our mindfulness practice that we do every day.
03:12So I suggest reading The Power of Contemplative Intelligence to try and start really digging
03:18deeply into what constitutes you as a complete and whole being.
03:25You're not just your body, heart, and mind.
03:28You have a soul.
03:29You have a sacred self.
03:32Although the primal defense systems that we have in our personality keep out many, many
03:38new experiences and adventures like any good antivirus software would, change really becomes
03:44the least important thing to do over time.
03:48The mind eliminates risks where possible, and the unknown gives way to the mind's need
03:53for constant certainty.
03:58Mindfulness gives way to a full mind, a busy mind, which paradoxically turns into mindlessness.
04:07Social programs become anxiety, stress, depression, and even personality disorders in the end
04:13that lock us into running on autopilot.
04:18When we run on autopilot for too long, it's just a matter of time before we get lost.
04:27Pathway number one, master your mind.
04:32To transform your thinking and consciousness, it is essential to break the stream of thoughts
04:37Learn to respond rather than react.
04:42Mindfulness itself allows individuals to listen, think, and respond with clarity, openness,
04:48and honesty.
04:49We have all heard it said that you create your own personal reality with your thoughts
04:56and beliefs, but you experience it through feelings and emotions.
05:02Change your thoughts, change your life, or when you change the way you look at things,
05:07the things you look at change.
05:15Mindfulness has a power that supersedes even what medical science can do for us today.
05:21Largely, life is an inside job, and as we learn to master the mind, we start to see
05:26the evidence of miracles showing up more and more in our daily lives.
05:32As you begin to master the mind, an entire new world opens up in response.
05:40Pathway two, mastering acceptance.
05:44By accepting the present moment, whether it's good or bad, individuals can achieve inner
05:48peace and tranquility.
05:52Mastering acceptance involves acknowledging and embracing the reality of the current situation
05:57that you're in without seeking to change it.
06:01A great practice to master acceptance is to get beyond your story.
06:06The mind's story, or his story, history, is ceaseless and starts to run the show over
06:13time.
06:14Imagine what things would be like if you accepted the situation just as it is.
06:19To do so, use relaxation strategies, mindfulness practices, journaling, and self-reflection
06:26to really understand your emotions.
06:29When we develop the mindful ability to stop automatic thoughts and ask ourselves who we
06:34are and how we feel, really, we do so with traumatic, anxious, and disturbing thoughts.
06:47So the trick is to develop mindful ability without those disturbing thoughts to get beyond
06:53the veil of ignorance.
06:59The lies we may find that have held us captive simply may not be true.
07:05Pathway three, mastering awareness.
07:10By cultivating pure awareness and sharpening concentration, mindfulness enables individuals
07:15to become calmer, more productive, and successful.
07:19It encourages living in the present moment to foster a sense of contentment and well-being.
07:28Focusing on your attention, such as your breathing, and developing a non-judgment attitude is
07:34essential in mastering awareness.
07:38Mindfulness can help you increase your focus and adjust your thoughts.
07:42If you add thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and every other aspect of the self together,
07:48we have a whopping weapon for self-mastery.
07:52When we align our faculties, our bodies, hearts, and minds, along with our intuition and intentions,
07:58for example, all come together and we find dormant power within.
08:08Pathway four, living in the present.
08:12Living in the present moment is an art that requires mindful practice.
08:16It involves focusing attention on the present reality that you're experiencing and averting
08:22thoughts that lead to depression or anxiety of any kind.
08:26These are normally caused by past worries, by memories, and even thoughts about the future.
08:32So living in the present, of course, means being aware of what is happening right here
08:38and right now, including being aware that you're having these thoughts about the past
08:43and the present is the pathway that we're speaking about here, the pathway about living
08:50in the present moment and knowing that your thoughts are not your reality.
08:59Pathway five, noticing.
09:07Noticing is an essential component of mindfulness, emphasizing the importance of being attentive
09:12and awake rather than evading reality.
09:15It allows for an encounter with reality as it is.
09:21So it gets into a category of our own, this noticing, because it is so, so very powerful.
09:29The mindfulness teacher Byron Katie asks us, how much of your time is spent worrying, planning
09:36and stressing, reminiscing, daydreaming or ruminating?
09:41All of those things pull you away from the present moment.
09:45The truth is, there is magic happening in this very moment, this moment that will never
09:51be repeated.
09:52What are you choosing to notice today, she asks.
09:58Paying attention and noticing smashes our hypervigilance tendencies down to the ground.
10:08The mind is always looking for trouble, trying to seek it out and avoid it.
10:13But the trouble is, trouble is not always there.
10:19Over time this can turn into a gloomy feeling and then worse still, it can become physically
10:23alive in our bodies.
10:26Noticing how amazing life is, is not something that concerns the mind, strange, but the mind
10:32clings to fear and not bliss, that's the important part.
10:35So bliss is practiced through awareness, through noticing, and when we notice, we fall
10:41into the gracious present moment, into gratitude, awe and wonder.
10:53All things the mind doesn't like doing, we start to do.
10:57This is the art of showing up, it's the art of contemplative practice, we call living
11:02through your contemplative intelligence.
11:06Notice that you have it, this higher intelligence, and then use it.
11:14Pathway six, master an open mind.
11:19Keeping an open mind is actually no easy task.
11:22We must replace an empty mind with an open one.
11:25It helps you to grow, strengthen self-reliance and especially an honesty that comes with
11:31an open mind.
11:37Open minds are truth-seeking minds, full, full of possibility and realizations rather
11:43than rationalizations.
11:49Master an open mind by being curious, asking open-ended questions, considering maybe instead
11:55of thinking that you're right someone else's opinion and let your ideas be challenged.
12:02It actually opens us up to empathy, encourages relationship building with other people and
12:09allows others to actually hear what you have to say and vice versa.
12:15Open-minded people are ratified, so becoming more self-aware, seeking out new experiences
12:20and perspectives, actively listening to others and especially being willing to change our
12:26minds can become the doorway to a transformed and better self.
12:38Pathway seven is about mastering non-judgment.
12:41The mind, after all, is a judging machine.
12:44It's the nature of the mind to judge and practicing non-judgment involves letting go of critical
12:50evaluations and embracing a more balanced and open-minded perspective.
12:57It encourages stepping out of judgmental thinking to gain a clearer, more balanced view of the
13:02world.
13:05Non-judgmental people tend to not critique too quickly.
13:12The mind wants to pursue what it thinks is good, flee from what it thinks is bad and
13:16ignore everything else in between.
13:20So some things are judged as good, we grasp for these and we cling to them.
13:27Other things are judged as bad, so we hide, resist, run away from them.
13:33As for everything that's judged as neutral, well, we ignore it.
13:38This is how over time your judgment insurgence starts to ruin your life from the inside out.
13:44Your judge is never happy, always critical and fault-finding.
13:50Letting go of our need to control can lead to a sense of relief and peace as individuals
13:56come to terms with the limited control they actually have over various aspects of our
14:01lives.
14:09Fear of change, loneliness, fear of rejection, uncertainty, fear of being judged or simply
14:15loss of control are all based in one primary emotion of fear.
14:22Fear builds our masks.
14:26One of the biggest fears that we actually have stems out of our uncertainty.
14:33Fear of failure, rejection and even fear of missing out or FOMO are all big deals when
14:39we're speaking about letting go of control.
14:45If we're not acting from a place of authenticity, we're lying and nothing good comes from a
14:51lie.
14:52We're not speaking the truth and pain and suffering manifest soon enough.
15:00Self-love is the antidote for depression.
15:30Which is a state perpetuated by our incessant need for control that eventually turns inward
15:37and turns us on ourselves.
15:46Pathway nine, master mindful walking.
15:52Mindful walking is something any one of us can do to start to begin to practice this
15:58at any stage of our lives.
16:03If you're unable to walk, you can do it with your imagination and there's a lot on the
16:07internet about it.
16:09The mind does not distinguish very well between your actual environment and the one that you
16:16imagine in your mind.
16:24Walk into the world every morning with intention, silence, gratitude and a deep sense of mindfulness.
16:31Allow the thoughts you have to ebb and flow as you start to learn about how to incorporate
16:36contemplative walking into your daily practice.
16:41Out goes the autopilot, in comes mindful mastery.
16:49Mindful walking or contemplative walking is not about knowing, it's just about flowing.
16:55It's about noticing everything just as it is without the judgments, the deeper thoughts
17:01or questioning.
17:04It lets us observe as if there are ships flowing past.
17:09This in turn allows answers to flow to us as if they are spoken through some kind of
17:15ancient and silent language.
17:18Nature tends to speak like this.
17:20It is one of the rare pleasures of life today that still costs nothing.
17:26How you begin is by re-looking at everything you see on a walk.
17:32Use short words like tree, bird, water or warmth to describe the energy and the light
17:38you sense now and you take in mindfully.
17:42It's something we don't even realize, we're not even aware of if we're not mindful.
17:49Allow flow, allow nature to communicate with you in a holy and personal communion.
17:56Holy means sacred and everything is sacred and holy, including you.
18:02Nature will help you in its depth and simplicity to remind you of this.
18:08Pathway 10.
18:10Mindful vs. Mindful
18:15Mindfulness teaches individuals to recognize when their minds are becoming overwhelmed
18:19with information, helping them to consciously choose to stop filling their minds with excessive
18:24thoughts and distractions.
18:28Information is in no short supply today, in fact we're overwhelmed with information.
18:37Inspiration or inform is really our minds running on autopilot.
18:44Inspiration or inspirit is really how we're inspired to run off sacred thinking, sacred
18:51self, authentic self, whatever you want to call it.
18:57Let's be mindful rather than having a mind that is full.
19:06Pathway 11.
19:07Mastering Anxiety
19:17Mastering anxiety involves practicing techniques such as the 54321 method, so many methods
19:23I'm sure you've heard of tons of them.
19:26When you get down here in the doldrums, in the dungeons of the mind, which is your survival
19:31response, things start to happen to push you back up, and it's love or suffering that
19:37is going to get you in the front.
19:40You can choose often, it's love or suffering that is going to create spiritual dynamics
19:46that shift you one way or another.
19:49Choose love.
19:50There really is a method to the madness when it comes to mastering anxiety.
19:57To learn how to heal anxiety, we need to know why it's here and what it wants from
20:01us.
20:03Nothing is random, nothing.
20:06Master anxiety by becoming mindful of why it exists, what it wants to say, and how you
20:11will get into agreement with it so that you can make peace.
20:15Peace is anxiety's antidote.
20:27Pathway 12, Master the Five Senses through 54321.
20:33Pratyahara means gaining mastery over external influences, or understanding and mastering
20:40the five senses.
20:42So the 54321 technique that we mentioned above stays in our view.
20:47It's a good example because with deep breathing and progress in mindfulness practice, we start
20:54to acknowledge our sensory perceptions in the environment.
20:58We start to master these five senses and become grounded, and definitely the world is finding
21:07relief from anxiety through quelling and mastering their five senses.
21:13But indeed, that is not enough to achieve self-mastery.
21:19To effectively control your sense organs, you need to adhere to some more simple mindfulness
21:24practices like meditating daily, contemplating, noticing, and breathing like we've mentioned.
21:35You will experience bliss when you are centered in your innate true nature, which lies beyond
21:41the five senses.
21:45From the five sensory, we become extrasensory, and when we become extrasensory, then we get
21:53into the interesting stuff, imagination, intuition, creativity.
22:01All the very best parts of ourselves are stored in our frontal lobes.
22:07We've got to take the journey from survival mind to arrive mind, to thrive mind, to actually
22:13start to experience the power of intention.
22:17To be able to create a life with our imagination is something that many, many people report,
22:23and in short periods of time too.
22:26So we can master the senses, and then in so doing, we open ourselves to mastering the
22:32extrasensory.
22:37Pathway 13, making mindful decisions.
22:42Making mindful decisions involves a thoughtful and deliberate approach to decision-making,
22:48focusing on thought, feeling, potential outcomes to ensure better, more balanced choices.
22:56Tony Robbins suggests four rules for decision-making, which I quite like.
23:00Rule one, write it down.
23:01Rule two, get clear about your feelings.
23:05Not always easy to do.
23:08Rule three, let go of fear, a big, big issue that we're dealing with now.
23:13And rule four, recognizing your values.
23:17That means recognizing who you really are, starting to bridge across from your personality
23:23to your spirituality.
23:29So what I would add to Tony's amazing four rules here is that making mindful decisions
23:36involves an awareness to stop before you start any action, which is counter-intuitive, really.
23:43But get rid of the endless flow of automatic thoughts and lean into the discomfort of feelings
23:49as you practice these 21 pathways to self-mastery.
23:56Making mindful decisions involves aligning with our intentions, then our values, then
24:01our objectives, and then who we are and who we're going to be.
24:06These bigger issues are rarely brought into our most common decision-thinking processes.
24:11Making mindful decisions involves them all.
24:19Making these decisions is something that you can master to make big, drastic, and life-altering
24:23changes in your life.
24:27Decision-making is a practice.
24:29You can become mindless, per se, while driving, while breaking up a salad, or missing out
24:36on the best of the day while you ruminate over stressful events that you had earlier.
24:44Trust in your intuition, your inner ding, as we call it, and trust your instincts, your
24:50gut feel, as you begin to make better choices.
24:55Identify your real needs, values, and priorities, which are all laced in who you really are.
25:03Remember to discover and evaluate many options.
25:06Don't go all gray, or all black, or all white.
25:10Make decisions based on reality, not illusion.
25:16Pathway 14.
25:18Mindful Everything.
25:21Make sure to have a mindful wind-down before sleep.
25:24Cheat, pray, and then love, all in that order.
25:27Have a mindful wake-up to start your day.
25:31Mindfully set your three best intentions in the first hour of the day and write them down.
25:37Relax the body and do a 10-minute mindful meditation at least before arising.
25:43Deepak Chopra has suggested that sometimes he does a couple of hours meditation before
25:48starting his day.
25:52Remember to take mindful breaths to check in mindfully in the day, and at lunchtime
25:56practice mindful eating.
25:59Then mindfully walk.
26:01Remember the three-second rule before you do anything.
26:04This will all rewire your brain.
26:08Activate your mind and your muscles mindfully, and stop with the autopilot.
26:13This is what we mean by mindful everything.
26:17Further still, you can contemplatively read, view artwork, and mindfully interact with
26:23nature.
26:26Do only what is in front of you when you feel overwhelmed and find a mindful rhythm.
26:32When we are mindful at a few things, we soon become mindful at everything.
26:38Pathway 15.
26:40Mastery in the Power of Truth.
26:44Truth means reality.
26:45It is the place we are set free.
26:54Our life's purpose is discovering the truth, and evidence for this is that we are all just
26:59becoming more conscious every day of our lives.
27:03If you look at what happens in group therapy or an alcoholic synonymous meeting for example,
27:08you'll see that a bunch of people are just chipping away at the truth.
27:13Strangers help us reveal to ourselves the truth that lies below the masks of our personalities
27:19far far better than we can do for ourselves, we're just too close to the problem.
27:26The same thing happens in a psychologist's office.
27:29All that people do is sit on the couch and talk until they discover the truth within.
27:36The truth is hidden and dormant within us all along, we just need to uncover it.
27:42So we are led to believe a lie and finding the truth is a natural progression through
27:48problems towards solutions.
27:51Mindful practice is being still, aware, and present enough to allow the truth to reveal itself.
28:02Pathway 16.
28:03Mastery Beyond Fear.
28:06Mindfulness encourages individuals to confront fear and anxiety as a means of learning and
28:11growing.
28:12Ultimately this all leads to a greater sense of freedom and real control over our emotional
28:18responses.
28:21So we know we can practice Thai Massage, Yoga, Mindfulness, Techniques, and Meditation.
28:28But the important bit is to know that we're always moving beyond fear and the real pathway
28:35is back to love.
28:37This return to love, love of the self, health, wealth, and world is our cure for anxiety.
28:47Anxiety is separation from love so connection is how we develop mastery beyond fear.
28:53All you need is love.
28:59Pathway 17.
29:01Mindfulness Over Fear and Anxiety.
29:05Fear is a reaction to a current threat while anxiety is a feeling of dread about a future
29:11threat.
29:12So we need to tackle both fear and anxiety with mindfulness.
29:17Some people might say that having fear and anxiety as a mindfulness mastery tool wouldn't
29:21be a good thing.
29:22In fact, any form of anxiety should be treated as negative but to be honest, without fear
29:28and anxiety, you wouldn't live very long at all.
29:32In the beginning of any growth process, we normally suffer some sort of pain.
29:37Just look at starting gym or walking 10 miles.
29:40We have growing pain so to speak and only thereafter, if we persevere through the initial
29:46pain, do we get to a place of more contentment and more fulfillment.
29:51We get to a place of higher consciousness and understanding which of course is probably
29:57a large part of what the meaning of life itself has to do with.
30:01But listen, mindfulness over fear and anxiety is a choice.
30:06This is good news so choose wisely.
30:13Pathway 18.
30:15Mindful Sensing.
30:18Practicing mindful sensing involves breathing methods, guided imagery and other practices
30:24to relax the body and mind.
30:27All these practices of course help to reduce stress which is a good thing.
30:32However, that is just the doorway to the infinite, boundless spiritual self within.
30:40Mindful sensing is a type of meditation that involves being aware of your current feelings
30:44and sensations without judgment or interpretation.
30:50Over analysis paralysis is not mindful sensing.
30:56So this mindful sensing is a way to anchor yourself in the present moment and can help
31:00reduce stress.
31:03It helps us maintain moment by moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, body sensations
31:09and the surrounding environment through a gentle, nurturing lens.
31:17Stress is like that uninvited guest who just won't leave.
31:21Mindfulness on the other hand can be the bouncer.
31:24It uses the five senses, sight, sound, touch, smell and taste of course as we've discussed
31:28to anchor us in that present moment.
31:31But here's the exciting bit, once we are mindful and present, we are able to practice contemplative
31:38practices that take us beyond the sensory and into the extrasensory.
31:46We are all creatures capable of extrasensory mastery.
31:50Christ said that we would be able to move mountains with our belief.
31:54And belief, intuition, imagination are all examples of the tools we have to access our
32:01incredible power beyond the sensory.
32:09Pathway 19.
32:10Mindful kindness.
32:13Kindness is portrayed as an act of mindful service and compassion, emphasizing the importance
32:18of self-care, self-discipline and mindful consumption.
32:25One of my favorite mindfulness practices is called loving kindness or metta, which helps
32:30us cultivate an attitude of open, unconditional friendliness, EQ really.
32:37This practice entails sending kind, compassionate or loving intentions or phrases or affirmations
32:44to several different categories of individuals.
32:48Well I call this metta.
32:51Metta meditation starts with the self and then pours out through the great chain of
32:55being through minerals at the very bottom to other animals, to people and all the way
33:00up to God at the top at the level of the metta physical.
33:05So kindness practices are concerned with altruism, with generosity and mutual cooperation.
33:14Acting with kindness consistently over time leads to more happiness, better health, stronger
33:21lasting friendships and even greater longevity.
33:24Now that is self-love in depth right there.
33:32Pathway 20.
33:34Discover the beauty of mindful seeing.
33:37Now the art of mindful seeing resembles meditation except it harnesses the power of sight to
33:44immerse yourself into the intricacies of a single present moment.
33:51To embark on this practice simply find a comfortable spot, stand or sit if you like and leisurely
33:58Absorb the entire visual scene without rushing, without analyzing and calculating.
34:07Discard the tendency to mentally label or categorize the elements within that sight.
34:13What sets this mindfulness practice apart is its reliance on extrasensory abilities
34:20transcending the limitations of those basic five senses.
34:26Through mindful seeing you can dedicate five minutes, five hours if you like, gazing out
34:32of a window, perceiving the world as if you were for the very first time.
34:41Instead of automatically pigeonholing or scrutinizing things, we have the opportunity to mindfully
34:47behold birds, colors, shapes, distances even and even the proximity of your nose, a detail
34:55that is often overlooked by the mind.
34:57Yes, in case you've forgotten, the mind has cut out the vision of your nose to make
35:04your day more pleasurable.
35:05So by opting for more mindful seeing we shift from analysis to pure observation, allowing
35:12thoughts to flow far more freely, unrestricted by the pursuit of solutions and the fixation
35:20of forthcoming incessant challenge.
35:29Finally pathway 21, mastering mindful meditation.
35:34In some ways we have saved the best for last.
35:38Mindful meditation like CQ meditation practices have been known to heal depression, anxiety,
35:45major pain and even major medical issues in a short period of time which we won't get
35:50into now but the science is out there.
35:55Mindfulness meditation is a mental training practice that teaches you to start by slowing
36:00down racing thoughts.
36:07It teaches you to let go of negativity and calm both your mind and your body.
36:14It combines meditation with the practice of mindfulness, which can be defined as a
36:19mental state that involves being focused on the present I would say, so you can acknowledge
36:25and accept your thoughts, feelings, all the sensations that you have but without judgment.
36:31That's mindfulness mastery.
36:34The CQ mindfulness meditations that we practice will often take you beyond these five senses,
36:42beyond the mind's need for certainty and then even beyond your personality because
36:48beyond your personality is where you will find your soul or your sacred self or whatever
36:53you want to call it because that's where change, transformation, spiritual awakening and miracle
36:59making happen.
37:05And there you have the 21 pathways to self-mastery.
37:11Mindful mastery is a process, there's not a once-off deal.
37:15When you think of mindful mastery, think of mindful living, of advocating for presence,
37:21for kindness, for compassion, all essential tools for our future and for transforming
37:27our own lives.
37:33If you practice mindful mastery, you'll actually be practicing a more deliberate and fulfilling
37:39way to embrace self-discovery at a really, really deep level and find out who you really,
37:47really are, which is a lifelong process.
37:52So I hope these 21 pathways to mindfulness mastery have really taken you on a little
37:56bit of a journey towards developing a key where you can access mindful and contemplative
38:03states whenever you want to.
38:05In fact, all 21 keys have been around for centuries.
38:10This is important to know because it's good news again.
38:13It proves their authenticity.
38:16It proves that things have not changed and that which is real is that which does not
38:20change.
38:24Mindfulness mastery after all will help you shift from personality to spiritual reality.
38:30Namaste.
