00:00A square has four sides. There are four cardinal directions. North, south, east, and west.
00:07There are four seasons in a year. But did you know that there are four types of sentences?
00:13That's right. And you are about to learn all four of them.
00:17Later in this video, we are going to quiz you and ask how many types of sentences there are.
00:23So remember, there are four types of sentences.
00:26And once you learn them, you'll know how to identify any sentence.
00:31And people will be like, whoa, how did you do that?
00:34But first, we want to pay a visit to our friend Terrence.
00:38Terrence is writing a note that he would like everyone to see so we can really learn these four types of sentences.
00:45Let's see what Terrence wrote.
00:48Are carrots the best snack around? I think they are.
00:52Carrots are very crunchy and tasty. Remember to eat carrots every day.
00:59What a great note from Terrence. You might have noticed there are four sentences here.
01:04These sentences represent each of the four types of sentences.
01:10Let's take his first sentence. Are carrots the best snack around?
01:15This type of sentence is called an interrogative sentence.
01:19Interrogative is a big word. Interrogative. Can you say that with us? Interrogative.
01:28Interrogative sentences ask a question. They end with a question mark.
01:35Interrogative sentences ask a question. You know, a song could help us remember that.
01:42Oh, wow. We're doing this right now, huh?
01:45Okay, let's go ahead and do a little song.
01:47Interrogative. It's a question. Interrogative. Interrogative. It's a question. Interrogative.
01:57Interrogative. It's a question. Interrogative. Interrogative. It's a question. Interrogative.
02:07Here are some interrogative sentences.
02:10Where are you going? Will it rain tomorrow? What type of sentence will we learn next?
02:17These are all interrogative sentences.
02:20Alright, so interrogative sentences ask a question.
02:24Let's look at the next sentence that Terrence wrote.
02:27We know the first sentence is an interrogative sentence because it asks a question.
02:33But what about this second sentence?
02:37The second sentence says, I think they are.
02:40Notice the exclamation point. What type of sentence is this?
02:44Well, it is an exclamatory sentence. An exclamatory sentence.
02:52Exclamatory sentences make a statement with emotion.
02:56And they always end with an exclamation point, just like this sentence on the screen does.
03:02It is an exclamatory sentence because it is being shared with great excitement.
03:09Exclamatory sentences can show surprise, happiness, excitement, or even anger.
03:17A big clue is the exclamation point.
03:20Only one other type of sentence can have an exclamation point.
03:24A type of sentence we'll learn later in the video.
03:27But if a sentence has an exclamation point, it is usually an exclamatory sentence.
03:34Here are some exclamatory sentences.
03:38You came to my party!
03:40I hope I can go to the park today!
03:42I can't believe our team lost the game!
03:47These are exclamatory sentences.
03:50They make a statement with emotion.
03:54Okay, so the first type of sentence was interrogative.
03:58Interrogative sentences ask a question.
04:01The second type of sentence was exclamatory.
04:05Exclamatory sentences make a statement with emotion.
04:09Exclamatory sentences can share all kinds of emotion, not just happy emotions.
04:15We use exclamatory sentences a lot in our videos because we are so excited.
04:22The third type of sentence is called declarative.
04:26Declarative.
04:28A declarative sentence is just like an exclamatory sentence except it doesn't have the emotion.
04:35A declarative sentence makes a statement. That's it.
04:40It's interesting. Declarative sentences are the most common type of sentence.
04:46That's pretty cool. That might be worth sharing with someone.
04:50You know, telling a friend. They might want to know.
04:55The declarative sentence from Terence read,
04:58Carrots are very crunchy and tasty.
05:01You can tell that it is a declarative sentence because it is making a statement without emotion.
05:07It ends with a period instead of ending with an exclamation point.
05:12If a sentence ends with a period, there is a big chance it is a declarative sentence.
05:20Here are more declarative sentences.
05:22The house is red. That's definitely declarative.
05:26We read every afternoon.
05:28And finally, I have two dogs and one cat.
05:32These are all declarative sentences.
05:34They make a statement without emotion.
05:37They end with a period instead of ending with an exclamation point.
05:41Like exclamatory sentences do.
05:46Okay, it's quiz time.
05:48How many types of sentences are there?
05:50How many?
05:53Yes, there are four types of sentences.
05:56Great job!
05:57That means there is only one more type of sentence to learn.
06:03They are called imperative sentences.
06:06Imperative sentences.
06:10Imperative sentences give a command.
06:13In other words, they tell someone to do something.
06:17Bob is telling me what he would like me to do.
06:20He is using imperative sentences as he gives me directions.
06:25Terence wrote this imperative sentence.
06:28Remember to eat carrots every day.
06:30It's an imperative sentence because it is giving a command.
06:34It's telling us what to do.
06:36This imperative sentence is telling us to remember.
06:41Here are some things Bob told me to do.
06:44These are imperative sentences because they are giving a command.
06:48He said, order more pencils.
06:51Make a sign-up sheet for our next party.
06:54And please feed my goldfish.
06:57Sometimes imperative sentences end with a period.
07:00Other times they end with an exclamation point.
07:03But if the sentence is giving a command, telling someone what to do,
07:08the sentence is always imperative,
07:10even if it looks like it might be declarative or exclamatory.
07:16Okay, let's go over the four types of sentences just one more time.
07:21The first is interrogative.
07:23Interrogative sentences ask a question.
07:26Then we have exclamatory.
07:28Exclamatory sentences make a statement with emotion.
07:32Next, we have declarative sentences.
07:35Declarative sentences make a statement.
07:39And finally, we have imperative sentences.
07:42Imperative sentences give a command.
07:47Thanks for learning about sentences with us.
07:50Now you know the four types of sentences, and that's pretty cool.
