02:59And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message, Thy Kingdom Come.
03:07In the aftermath of World War I,
03:10the Red Cross recruited American young men to travel to Europe to help the suffering masses over there,
03:17and one farm boy from Missouri caught the vision.
03:22He was too young to apply, but he forged the date on his birth certificate,
03:27managed to join the Red Cross, and he became an ambulance driver in France.
03:33While there, he fell in love with the charm and elegance of the French design and architecture,
03:38and he took it all in, the ornate chambers of the palaces,
03:42the gardens in Versailles, the paintings in the galleries.
03:46It was just like magic to him.
03:49It was overwhelming.
03:51Later, this young man returned to Europe with his wife
03:54and continued to dream of creating worlds of fantasy,
03:57lands filled of kings and queens and castles and palaces
04:01and heroes and villains and enchanted kingdoms.
04:05Today, if you visit one of Walt Disney's theme parks,
04:09you will see royalty everywhere.
04:12Mufasa, the Lion King, King Triton, the Little Mermaid,
04:16Queen Leia, Prince Charming, and, of course, all the princesses
04:19like Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel, Jasmine, and so on.
04:24Now, people call Disney parks the happiest places on earth,
04:29but that's not quite true.
04:32I mean, they're also expensive tickets.
04:36They're long lines.
04:38If you've ever been there, you know there's frazzled parents
04:42trying to manage exhausted youngsters,
04:45yet even children want to go because they believe
04:48there should be a place where royalty is good
04:51and kings are needed and happiness rules the day.
04:55C.S. Lewis said,
04:57our longing for these worlds indicate a true desire
05:01in the human heart for a world where everything
05:05would be as it should be.
05:08Behind the myths, he said, is an ultimate reality
05:11that pulls us onward and upward.
05:13We all want a world like that.
05:15We look at the world that we live in now and we realize,
05:18at least from my perspective,
05:20I can't remember it ever being this bad.
05:22I came into the world toward the end of the Second World War,
05:25but even during the war, there was excitement and patriotism
05:29to defend our nation, and now you have to wonder
05:32if we would have to fight another war
05:34if anybody would go and fight.
05:36The thing that goes on in our world today
05:38just seems to, it's a downgrade.
05:40It's not what we would hope.
05:42You know, everybody says, you know,
05:44if you do everything right, the world will get better.
05:46It's not getting better, and in our hearts, we know that,
05:49and the Bible says we groan for the coming of this new world.
05:54In his book, Miracles, Lewis defined it as
05:57a real unfocused dream of falling on human imagination.
06:02In other words, we dream about a golden age for this world
06:05because there truly is a better world available.
06:08Somehow, we know that in our hearts,
06:11and we also know it from our Bibles.
06:14There is a better world coming.
06:16I'm not talking about heaven.
06:18I'm talking about a better world on planet Earth.
06:23Today, I want to tell you about a coming golden age
06:26with a great and glorious king ruling over a happy planet
06:30filled with noble people,
06:32among whom will be all of you who are Christians.
06:36During the past year, I have been focusing
06:38on the Great Disappearance, the return of Jesus Christ.
06:42In the Rapture, where we go up to meet the Lord in the air,
06:47we also know that afterward, the earth will endure
06:50seven years of tribulation,
06:52leading to the final battle of Armageddon.
06:56That's when Jesus will appear as lightning in the sky,
06:59returning to the Mount of Olives,
07:01entering the city of Jerusalem, and establishing his kingdom.
07:05Revelation 19 describes the return of Christ
07:08and the defeat of the Antichrist at the Battle of Armageddon.
07:12Then we turn to page of Revelation 20, and there we read,
07:16And I saw an angel coming down from heaven,
07:19having the key to the bottomless pit,
07:21and a great chain in his hand.
07:23And he laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old,
07:26who was the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years,
07:30and cast him into the bottomless pit,
07:32shut him up, and set a seal on him,
07:34so that he should deceive the nations no more
07:36till the thousand years were finished.
07:38And I saw thrones, and they sat on them,
07:41and judgment was committed to them,
07:43and they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years."
07:48A thousand years is a millennium.
07:52That's what the word means.
07:54Millie, thousand in us years.
07:58And it tells us that Christ is going to come back
08:01to this earth, and for 1,000 years,
08:05he's going to reign on this earth,
08:08and it's going to be a good experience.
08:11It will be the earth he intended us to have before sin happened.
08:15It will reverse all the curses that happened
08:17after Adam and Eve's sin.
08:19It will be a world like no other world.
08:21I never really thought about this much.
08:23I'm like most of you.
08:24When you think of the millennium,
08:25you put it off in the future, and you say,
08:27oh, that's something.
08:28I don't need to know much about that.
08:30That's gonna happen sometime away in the future.
08:32Stop and take note.
08:34If the rapture came today, within seven years,
08:37you and I will be in the millennium,
08:39reigning on this beautiful new earth with Christ
08:42over a world that you cannot imagine
08:44how wonderful it will be for 1,000 years.
08:48There is more information in the Bible about the millennium
08:52than there is about any other subject.
08:54That's hard to believe, and you probably don't know that
08:56because a lot of the information is stashed
08:59in some of the minor prophets and in Isaiah and Ezekiel
09:02and some of it in the New Testament,
09:04most of it in the Old Testament.
09:06We should give it our considerable attention
09:08because we're potentially only seven years away
09:11from experiencing this kingdom ourselves.
09:14We could be reigning with Christ within seven years
09:18on planet earth.
09:19This is an incredible thought.
09:21And this time on this earth, according to the Bible,
09:24is gonna be a time of happiness.
09:26Isaiah says it this way,
09:28"'For you shall go out with joy
09:30"'and be led out with peace and mountains,
09:33"'and the hills shall break forth with singing before you.
09:36"'All the trees of the fields shall leap
09:38"'and clap their hands in the millennium.'"
09:42It'll be a time of global peace.
09:44Isaiah says,
09:45"'The nations will beat their swords into plowshares
09:48"'and their spears into pruning hooks,
09:51"'and nations shall not lift up sword against nation,
09:54"'neither shall they learn war anymore.'"
09:56The Bible says we will study war no more.
10:00There'll be no armories.
10:02There'll be no guns.
10:03There'll be no implements of war.
10:05The Bible says we'll take all of these things
10:07and turn them into implements of agriculture.
10:10Can you imagine a world without the threat of war?
10:13And then it'll be a time of prosperity.
10:16Everybody's gonna prosper in the millennium.
10:18Listen to this.
10:20This is from Joel.
10:21"'The open pastures are springing up
10:23"'and the tree bears its fruit,
10:24"'and the fig tree and the vine yield their strength.
10:27"'The threshing floor shall be full of wheat
10:29"'and the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.'"
10:31Now, remember, this was an agricultural community,
10:34so that's how they would express prosperity.
10:37But here's another one.
10:38In the Bible, it says during the millennium,
10:40the reaper will catch up with the planter.
10:44In other words, here's a guy planting,
10:46and he looks around behind him, and here's the reaper.
10:48And they keep running into each other,
10:50the planter and the reaper,
10:52because God will bless the ground
10:55so much during the millennium
10:57that you'll hardly be able to keep up with the crops
11:00that will be produced on planet Earth.
11:02And then it's gonna be a time of harmony in nature.
11:07Everybody always likes to ask me this question.
11:10Are there gonna be animals in heaven?
11:13We did a little test at Turning Point
11:15when we were doing a series some years ago,
11:18and we put out a bunch of emails
11:20to see which one would get the most response.
11:22And one of the emails was the question,
11:24will animals be in heaven?
11:26It was responded to by five times more
11:29than any other thing that we had.
11:31And, you know, it's interesting
11:33because we have these statistics now
11:35that veterinarians are undersupplied.
11:38Everybody's got a dog.
11:40I got two of them.
11:42Everybody's got animals, and we can't imagine.
11:45Well, let me just help you with that.
11:47First of all, if the millennium is the prelude to heaven,
11:52here's what it says in Isaiah 11.
11:55The wolf will lie down with the lamb,
11:57and the leopard will lie down with the young goat,
12:00and they shall not hurt nor destroy
12:02in all my holy mountain.
12:04That's hard to believe.
12:05All the animals will be at peace.
12:07This will be such a time of peace,
12:09even the animals will get along with each other.
12:12And it'll be a time of spiritual revival.
12:15The earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
12:17as the waters cover the sea.
12:19Now, I'm gonna tell you something that may surprise you.
12:22Many of us have actually been specifically praying
12:25for this time to come since we were children,
12:29and we don't even realize it.
12:31Do you realize that millennial kingdom of Jesus Christ
12:34will be the ultimate fulfillment
12:36of the prayer that Jesus taught us to pray?
12:39Say this out loud with me.
12:41Our Father, who art in heaven,
12:44hallowed be thy name.
12:46Thy kingdom come, your will be done
12:49on earth as it is in heaven.
12:52Give us this day our daily bread,
12:55and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
12:59And lead us not into temptation,
13:01but deliver us from the evil one.
13:03For yours is the kingdom and the power
13:06and the glory forever.
13:08Amen.
13:09Now, let's go back to the top of that prayer
13:11where we pray,
13:13your kingdom come, your will be done
13:17on earth as it is in heaven.
13:19Every day, millions of Christians utter the Lord's prayer
13:23in hundreds of languages,
13:25in thousands of diverse settings and situations,
13:28so it has been for the last 2,000 years.
13:31No prayer has been more frequently spoken,
13:34more meaningfully offered, and more urgently needed
13:37even now as you listen to this message,
13:39someone somewhere is praying
13:41the 66 words of the Lord's Prayer.
13:45And I want to suggest that when we pray,
13:48thy kingdom come,
13:50we're praying for two things.
13:52We're praying for the kingdom of God to come in our hearts,
13:56and we're praying for it to come on earth
13:58in this period of time we call the millennium,
14:01the golden age that is in front of us.
14:03There are two phases to the coming of our Lord's kingdom.
14:06The first is the present reality
14:08of the kingdom of grace,
14:10the church of the Lord Jesus Christ.
14:12We are a part of God's kingdom.
14:14Now, the kingdom of God is in our hearts.
14:17We aren't under any physical king.
14:21We are under the king of heaven,
14:24and the kingdom is in our hearts.
14:26I want to introduce you to a phrase Bible scholars
14:29use to describe the kingdom of God.
14:31It goes like this,
14:33Already, but not yet.
14:35Already the kingdom's in our heart,
14:37but not yet is it on the earth.
14:39One of these days when Jesus comes back
14:41and the tribulation is over,
14:43Christ will set up his kingdom on this earth,
14:45and it will be the ultimate answer to the Lord's Prayer.
14:48Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.
14:53The Word of God does say that the kingdom of God
14:56is a present spiritual reality.
14:58At the same time, it is an inheritance
15:01which God will provide for all of us who are Christians.
15:04All Christians will go into the millennium.
15:07Ultimately, there will be sin in the millennium,
15:09and people wonder about that, but how many of you know
15:12just because you're Christians,
15:13you don't necessarily have Christian kids?
15:16So, when they go into the millennium
15:17and they have children, some of them won't be believers.
15:20Some of them will rebel against God,
15:22so there will be sin, but it will be cared for quickly
15:26and dealt with by King Jesus.
15:28When we pray,
15:29thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth
15:32as it is in heaven.
15:33This is a petition for God to reign.
15:36This is a petition that's in our heart.
15:38This is that hunger I was talking about.
15:40Lord, this world is so messed up.
15:42Could you just come and take over?
15:44Could you just come and make this world
15:46what you intended it to be when you created it
15:48before sin entered?
15:50Jesus began his preaching ministry with the news
15:52of the imminent appearing of the kingdom of God.
15:55He said,
15:56Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.
15:59He said,
16:00Let the little children come to me,
16:02and do not despise them,
16:03for of such is the kingdom of God.
16:06He said,
16:07The kingdom of God is within you.
16:09That's where it is right now.
16:11He stood before Pilate, and he said,
16:13My kingdom is not of this world.
16:16If my kingdom were of this world,
16:18my servants would fight.
16:20When the Holy Spirit descended on the 120 disciples
16:23in the upper room in Jerusalem,
16:25shortly after the ascension of Christ,
16:28the church came into sudden existence,
16:31and the word kingdom means the king's domain.
16:35So, if you acknowledge Jesus Christ today,
16:37you're in the kingdom.
16:38When you pray for God's kingdom on earth,
16:41you're praying for the spreading of the gospel
16:43in this world, and you're praying for that time to come
16:47when all things will be made right
16:49and we'll be in a world governed by King Jesus
16:53that will be like nothing you can imagine,
16:56the kingdom of glory.
16:58In the upper room, Jesus told his disciples,
17:01I bestow upon you a kingdom,
17:03just as my Father bestowed one upon me,
17:06so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom
17:10and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
17:15By his kingdom, we mean first the kingdom of grace,
17:18which is in our hearts,
17:19but we also mean the kingdom of glory,
17:21which is coming after the tribulation
17:23when King Jesus is on this earth,
17:25and it will be a time of spirituality too.
17:29In the verses that we read earlier,
17:31if you didn't pick it up, let me remind you,
17:34Satan won't be here.
17:37Can I get a witness?
17:39For 1,000 years, Satan will be locked up
17:43in the bottomless pit, no escape possible.
17:47He will have absolutely no influence
17:49over anything that happens in the millennium,
17:51and we will still mess up, but we'll never be able to say,
17:56the devil made me do it,
17:58because he won't have had any opportunity to do that.
18:01He will be locked away for 1,000 years.
18:05You say, why would God do that?
18:07Well, first of all, he proves to us
18:08that we can't blame Satan for everything.
18:11We have sinful natures, don't we?
18:14And those sinful natures also cause us
18:16to do things that we shouldn't do.
18:19But the kingdoms of this world in that day
18:21will become the kingdoms of the Lord and of Christ,
18:24and he shall reign forever and ever.
18:27One day, one day, men and women,
18:30the Lord Jesus will be king over the earth.
18:33He will reign for 1,000 years,
18:35and everyone who is a Christian will enter into that kingdom
18:38and be with him to reign and rule over planet Earth.
18:43At least at the beginning,
18:45there'll be no unbelievers on the earth.
18:47I can't imagine that.
18:49The talk shows will be different.
18:51The newscasts will be different.
18:53Everything will be different.
18:55Psalm 145 says it this way,
18:57they shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
18:59and talk of your power
19:01to make known to the sons of men his mighty acts
19:04and the glorious majesty of his kingdom.
19:08Obadiah wrote this, he said,
19:10the day of the Lord upon all the nations is near,
19:13but on Mount Zion there shall be deliverance
19:15and there shall be holiness,
19:16and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions,
19:19and the kingdom shall be the Lord's.
19:22We should think of this whenever we look at the map.
19:25Right now, the brooding nation of Russia
19:27spreads from Central Europe to furthest Asia.
19:31Beneath it is Mongolia and China.
19:34Nearby is India, and the global south
19:38is composed of Africa, Australia, South America.
19:42The United States and its familiar boundaries
19:45rest between the Atlantic and Pacific,
19:48with Canada above and Mexico below.
19:51Among the smallest nations is tiny Israel,
19:55only 71 miles at its widest point
19:59and a mere 263 miles from north to south.
20:03I'm gonna just take a moment and tell you that the Bible says
20:07those who bless Israel will be blessed
20:10and those who curse Israel will be cursed.
20:13We need to support Israel.
20:15This is not whether or not they deserve the land.
20:18You know how they got the land?
20:19God gave it to them.
20:21It was God's land to start with.
20:23He gave it to them, and he's not done.
20:31And the Bible says that very soon the boundaries of Israel
20:35will stretch from the Mediterranean to the Euphrates,
20:38and Zion will be the capital of the world.
20:41Jesus will reign from his throne.
20:43During the kingdom, Jesus will be on his throne in Jerusalem
20:47during the thousand-year reign we're talking about,
20:49and all the nations will fall into place under his authority,
20:52and peace will reign, and the holy people
20:54will populate the government, and a scepter of righteousness
20:57will be the scepter of his kingdom.
21:00The millennial kingdom will have no need for rescue missions
21:03or welfare programs or food stamps or relief agencies.
21:07The world will flourish under the hand of the King of Heaven.
21:11The Bible is filled with prophecies of a coming age
21:15of peace and prosperity, and it will be a time
21:17when war will utterly be unknown.
21:20Not a single armament plant will be operating.
21:23Not a soldier or sailor will be in uniform.
21:26No military camps will exist, and not one cent
21:29will be spent for armaments of war.
21:32Not a single penny will be used for defense,
21:35much less for offensive warfare.
21:37Can you imagine such an age?
21:40When all nations shall be at perfect peace,
21:43all the resources available for enjoyment,
21:45all industry engaged in the articles of a peaceful luxury.
21:50The venerable J. Vernon McGee put it in his own words this way.
21:54He said,
21:55"'The millennium is God's answer to the prayer,
21:58"'Thy kingdom come.'
22:00When we pray the Lord's prayer, we say,
22:02"'Thy kingdom come.'
22:04"'The earth as it is in heaven, that is the kingdom
22:06"'which he is going to establish here on this earth,
22:09and it is called the millennium.'"
22:11Whenever you pray the Lord's prayer,
22:13you're praying for that kingdom to come.
22:17Back in the 1970s, my friends Bill and Gloria Gaither
22:21were busy with family life,
22:24and one evening they entertained two friends
22:26who told them about a sermon they'd heard
22:28from a preacher named Jim Crabtree.
22:31Crabtree was so excited about the return of Christ
22:34that he ended the sermon by walking through his congregation
22:38and shouting,
22:39"'The king is coming!
22:40"'The king is coming!
22:41"'The king is coming!'
22:44After their friends left,
22:45Bill and Gloria kept talking about the glorious moment
22:48when the king will come amid a coronation processional.
22:53So Bill sat down at the piano and composed a melody
22:57while Gloria set aside her housework
23:00and wrote the lyrics to the song,
23:02"'The King is Coming.'"
23:04Yes, the king is coming, but so is the kingdom,
23:08and the Bible gives us some prayers that we can pray
23:12as we look forward to that day.
23:14One of them is the one we've been praying
23:16during this service,
23:17"'Your kingdom come, your will be done,
23:20"'on earth as it is in heaven.'"
23:24The second prayer is a one-word term I learned early in life
23:27because I grew up with the King James Version of the Bible,
23:30as many of you did.
23:32And in the King James Version of the Bible,
23:34the apostle Paul closed his first letter to the Corinthians
23:37with this word, Maranatha.
23:41And you know, we have a Maranatha church
23:43in our community.
23:44Maranatha has survived as a word everybody knows about,
23:48but do you know what it means?
23:49The word Maranatha means,
23:51"'O Lord, come.'"
23:53So, the first prayer you can pray is,
23:55"'Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
23:57"'on earth as it is in heaven, Lord.'
23:59And secondly, Maranatha, "'Come, Lord Jesus.'"
24:03And then the last one is the last words of the New Testament
24:06where we read, "'Even so, come, Lord Jesus.'"
24:10You know, folks, we don't have much of an appreciation
24:14for the things that are gonna happen in the future,
24:16but let me tell you something, they're gonna happen anyway.
24:19And the more we can learn about them
24:21and the more we know of God's great plan
24:23helps us to understand a little bit
24:25and maybe be a little more patient.
24:27This is a world tainted with the sin of mankind,
24:31but there's a coming world when there'll be no sin,
24:34when there'll be no crime, when there'll be no poverty,
24:37when there'll be no sickness,
24:39when death will happen only very, very seldom.
24:42And the Bible says during that time,
24:44a person who's 100 years old will be considered a child.
24:51That's what God has in store for us.
24:54Lord, help me to pray this prayer.
24:56Lord, I want to have happen today in my life
24:59as much as possible thy kingdom come
25:02on earth as it is in heaven.
25:04Help me to live like that.
25:06Some of you are gonna have a big adjustment
25:08when you go into the kingdom.
25:10Some of you won't have much at all.
25:12I wanna be among those who make a small adjustment
25:15when they go into the kingdom
25:17because they've been living under the king's orders
25:19for their whole life.
25:21I hope that's true for you too.
