00:00So this is a campaign, a joint campaign, for refuge and the independent, and it's the brick
00:06by brick campaign, which is building more refuge for women who are suffering from domestic abuse.
00:12I mean, there's places that refuge have, but they have to turn away someone every two hours,
00:19because sometimes people turn up with teenage sons, or they'll have more than two children,
00:24or they might have some pets even, things like that. So they can't go into the usual accommodation
00:31that refuge provides. So the brick by brick campaign is building new accommodation that
00:36can accommodate those incidents, those things that people might have. Every week,
00:42approximately three women die from suicide as a result of domestic abuse, this type of domestic
00:48abuse. And, you know, one woman is killed by an abusive partner, or ex, every five days in this
00:55country, in England and Wales. So it's really sort of, it's an emergency campaign, I would say.
01:02And the independence and refuge are trying to build these new places so people can find this
01:08refuge from a terrible situation, which is also, since COVID, has gone up 61%. Refugees seeing an
01:16increase in about over 60% in domestic abuse cases since COVID. There's a number of places
01:23to build for women around the country. But also, with this campaign, it's difficult because with
01:30some campaigns, you can see the results of your money, where it goes. But obviously, there's a
01:35level of secrecy here that refuge have to sort of deal with, because nobody needs to know
01:40where these women are going. But I've worked with refuge for a long time. And they're very sort of,
01:45they're a wonderful organisation. And people can get involved if they go to their Refugees
01:50Appeal page, or they can text BRIC to 70560. And they can donate £15 from there.
02:00I can't emphasise how important this campaign is, in the sense that, you know, people are,
02:06you know, turning up at refuge all the time, trying to find some sort of peace and security
02:12from terrible, terrible situations that they're in around this country.
