Herne Bay gym bosses react to plans for new David Lloyd complex in town

00:05David Lloyd says there'll be an outdoor pool with sun loungers, multi-use courts, a spa

00:10and of course, a gym. Canterbury City Council is expected to give the green light tonight.

00:16If so, it'll be the town's sixth gym. Will that saturate the town? Sam took over sweat

00:21stop earlier this year. He says he's not fearful for competition.

00:26As a gym, we are a very different concept to David Lloyd's, so I'm not overly worried.

00:32I think we're more of a community gym. We know all of our members by name and I think

00:39you can't really replace that. But it's a completely different concept. We're sort of

00:43a 24-hour local community gym and sort of the least intimidating space around to go

00:49into.

00:50The cost of memberships in a new David Lloyd gym is unknown, but at a similar site in Dartford,

00:55the pricing starts at £140 a month. Muscle Hunt is one of the other gyms in Herne Bay.

01:01They cost some £100 less a month.

01:05You put your David Lloyds, which is like your upper class luxury, you pay the premium. Whether

01:12people in this day and age have got the money to afford that, I don't know. But everyone's

01:19watching the pounds at the minute, so I'll be very wary with that one.

01:24The good thing with David Lloyds now is they've got the financial backing of all the other

01:27gyms within the UK, so if one does fall short for a year or two, they've got the money there

01:32to bounce it back up.

01:34If David Lloyd gets the go-ahead, they say the new centre could create up to 100 jobs.
