00:00Today, we are going to talk about even and odd numbers.
00:14It's important to understand what the words even and odd mean.
00:17An even number is a number that can be paired equally.
00:21A pair means two.
00:22So when we're talking about even numbers, we're talking about numbers that can be paired
00:26into twos.
00:27An odd number is a number that cannot be paired equally.
00:30An odd number is a number that is kind of left alone.
00:34And we'll talk about that more as we go through this lesson.
00:39I went to a parade today and I was able to get some candy.
00:42I brought some home and now I want to figure out if I have an even amount of candy or an
00:46odd amount of candy.
00:48I am going to put them into pairs.
00:50Remember that pairs mean that I will put them into twos.
00:53I will put these in a pair, these in a pair, these in a pair, and these in a pair.
01:01As you can tell, everything here has a pair.
01:04And that means that this is going to be an even number because everything can be paired.
01:10So we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
01:16So 8 is going to be an even number.
01:18Now let's say someone gets really, really hungry and they decide to come and take these
01:22away from me.
01:24Now I have this much.
01:25I'm not sure how many because I haven't counted yet.
01:28And I need to decide if it's an even or odd number.
01:32Once again, I'm going to try to put them into pairs.
01:35So I already have this pair.
01:37Then I'm going to take these two and put them into a pair.
01:40And then I'm going to put this one into a...
01:42Wait!
01:43I can't put this piece of candy into a pair.
01:46There's not another piece of candy to put it with.
01:49Since I cannot put this into another pair, I realize that this is an odd number.
01:54I cannot pair this number.
01:56So 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 is an odd number.
02:00I have two here, two here, and one all by itself.
02:05Five is an odd number.
02:08Let's take a look at this whiteboard and see how many even or odd magnets we have.

02:16I can't move these magnets.
02:17It's too strong.
02:19It looks like we're going to have to think of another way to figure out the even and
02:22odd numbers.
02:23I have an idea.
02:25I can put them into pairs by adding a circle around twos when we find twos.
02:30Let's do that together.
02:32Let's look at this top row right here and count how many magnets we have.
02:36Here's 1, 2, 3, 4.
02:39Let's go ahead and put them into pairs.
02:42This is a pair.
02:43And this is a pair.
02:45So 4 is an even number because it can be put into equal pairs.
02:50Let's look at the next row.
02:52Here's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
02:57Some of you are probably already catching on, and you can tell right away.
03:01Is this an even or odd number?
03:03Well, let's see.
03:07Let's put these into pairs and figure out if this is going to be even or odd.

03:16Look, if you said even, then you are right because they can all be put into pairs.
03:21Great job!
03:22There are 6 magnets here that can be put into pairs which makes 6 an even number.
03:27Now let's look at this last row.
03:29Here's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
03:34Let's go ahead and put these into pairs to see if we have an even or odd number.
03:39Let's put these two together, and these two together, and these two together, and uh-oh!
03:46We can't put this into a pair because there's not another magnet to pair it with.
03:50Right away, we should recognize that this is going to be an odd number.
03:55We realize we can't put it with anything else, so 7 is an odd number.
