00:16of their lives.
00:20Competing to become a fashion designer at Britain's most loved fashion retailer, Marks
00:25and Spencer.
00:26And with 32 million customers through their doors and 310 million clothing items sold
00:34in the past year, it won't be a job for the faint hearted.
00:39They are now looking for a new designer, someone who can create clothes that millions of people
00:44will want to buy.
00:46It's about finding somebody that's passionate for clothing and passionate about UK fashion.
00:52We want somebody to think slightly outside of the box and bring designs to M&S that we
00:57haven't seen before.
00:59We really want to go and find the next big thing and I just have a really good feeling
01:03that we're going to find somebody very special.
01:05Over six weeks, our 10 designers will work individually and in teams to create designs
01:15worthy of a place in high street windows.
01:18I've set myself up for such a complicated design.
01:21It takes us longer, a lot more elegant.
01:23Oh yeah, oh yeah.
01:24They're making silly mistakes now.
01:26No!
01:27Alright mannequin, it's you and me.
01:30That's a brave move.
01:33The nation is not ready for what's about to come.
01:36Alright designers, let's go!
01:38Move faster!
01:40It's okay, it's okay.
01:42They'll be under the scrutiny of our guest experts.
01:45This is something that I think would be timeless.
01:47Very chic.
01:48The simplicity of it is beautiful.
01:50That pops at me.
01:51It stands out.
01:52Real style.
01:54And the Marks and Spencer experts.
01:56Just beautifully finished.
01:58Really impressed with actually how you brought it together.
02:03Only one will win this life-changing prize.
02:06The winner of M&S Dress the Nation is...
02:09A job to dress the nation.
02:21Hiya!
02:24Hello everyone.
02:25Welcome to Dress the Nation.
02:28The search for the next big thing in fashion has officially begun.
02:32Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go!
02:35A girl like me who never went to fashion school,
02:38who just loved sewing and never had a break.
02:41This is a break that I needed.
02:43For one of you, there's a huge prize.
02:46A once-in-a-lifetime chance to become a fashion designer
02:50for Britain's best-loved retailer, Marks and Spencer.
02:56So I work in finance.
02:57I'd absolutely love, at 45,
03:00begin a career that ultimately I wished I'd started when I was 20.
03:05Your winning designs will go on sale in stores up and down Great Britain.
03:10So essentially, you are dressing the nation.
03:13Cool.
03:14This week, we are kicking things off with women's wear.
03:17So please welcome the director of women's wear at M&S, Maddie Evans.
03:22And someone we're going to see a lot of,
03:24marketing director for clothing, Anna Breathwaite.
03:32Completing our line-up, get ready to spice up your summer wardrobe,
03:37please welcome Mel B!
03:39Yes, Mel B!
03:40CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
03:44I think I think, aw, hello!
03:46Really, really excited.
03:48I was a massive Spice Girls fan.
03:50I still don't think the star-struckness has sunk in yet.
03:53I'm still a little country boy at heart.
03:55Now, Mel, I mean, you have wore some iconic outfits over the years.
04:00Tell me what you want, what you really, really want from our designers.
04:04OK, because it's women's wear, you know,
04:08I want it to be a staple of every woman's wardrobe.
04:11The summer dress.
04:13I live in leopard print.
04:15I like bold, I like statements.
04:18So we want to see something that really expresses your individual style,
04:22really let your creative juices flow
04:24and give us something bold and confident.
04:26At M&S, it is all about pushing boundaries.
04:29So we really, really, really want to see your personalities
04:32on those mannequins at the end of this four hours.
04:35So just go for it, make a lasting impression
04:38and just make sure that it's for the right reasons.
04:40I feel nervous for you. Yeah, me too.
04:43So good luck to you all.
04:46Designers, you have four hours to impress with your dress
04:51and your time starts now!
04:54Good luck!
04:57Having pre-prepared some design ideas,
04:59the designers have just four hours to make a summer dress
05:03that showcases their personal style
05:05while hitting the bold statement brief.
05:08The experts will then judge their finished garments
05:10and rank them from tenth to first place.
05:14Do I just go with the first one I see?
05:17Oh, but this is cute.
05:19Oh, OK, I'm debating.
05:21Is this wedding? Is it wedding?
05:23If you get the fabric choice wrong,
05:25then you're better off thinking of the right one, aren't you?
05:28Let me see this.
05:31I am the queen of dresses, so this challenge is perfect for me.
05:35I wear dresses every day, so, yeah, it's a dream project.
05:40I used to work as an estate agent
05:42and I started buying fabric for myself
05:45and I just found that I had too much,
05:47so I decided to list some of them online and they sold
05:50and it's grown into a whole shop. It's amazing.
05:53I provide fabric so that other people can sew their own clothes,
05:58but it would be amazing if I could be the one
06:00designing things for other people
06:02and to just literally dedicate my entire life to this.
06:06Hiya, Sandeep. Hello. How are you getting on? Good.
06:09Yeah, I'm just, I'm in the moment, I'm feeling good.
06:12Although I did have a little bit of a stress
06:14when I got into the fabric room.
06:16I was like, do I go for this floral, do I go for this?
06:19And I was like, the floral was, like, nice, but it wasn't me.
06:23Sandeep is designing a summer wrap dress,
06:26but with the challenge all about being bold,
06:28will her choice of a neutral fabric colour be enough
06:31to convince the experts she's worthy of a role at M&S?
06:35Sandeep, I believe she's doing quite a simple wrap dress.
06:39It's quite simple.
06:40I'm interested to see how much of a statement piece
06:44it's actually going to be.
06:46It feels like something you might see already in the market.
06:50Yeah, definitely.
06:51And is it really reflecting her personality?
06:54Yeah.
06:57So I'm actually going to be making a zero-waste dress,
07:00which means that the garment will be made
07:02from the entirety of the fabric.
07:04I was trying to find a way to create a dress ethically.
07:09I'm Daylan, I'm 30, I'm from Zimbabwe,
07:12but I have been in London for ten years.
07:15My mum's always made clothes.
07:17Growing up in Zimbabwe,
07:18when we didn't have access to buying clothes,
07:20she would make us everything.
07:22Watching her be so resourceful,
07:24finding materials to create what we need,
07:26it's definitely something that I've inherited
07:29and something that I implement in my own approach
07:32to making clothes.
07:33Daylan has designed a sustainable dress,
07:36which uses the entirety of the fabric,
07:38meaning that nothing is wasted.
07:40I'm hoping that it's going to be quite feminine
07:43and hopefully quite cute.
07:46I know you really like this design, don't you?
07:48Yes, yeah, I'm just really intrigued.
07:50It's pretty complex in terms of his ambition.
07:53It really is, it really is.
07:55But I think it's answering your brief.
07:57And I've been really impressed just by his demeanour.
08:00He's really calm.
08:01He feels like he's in complete control.
08:03That's the kind of skill that you do need
08:05in an office environment.
08:06Totally.
08:07I think they'll see definitely an attempt
08:10to create a product that an M&S customer
08:13might not have seen yet.
08:15So I hope they appreciate the ambition.
08:19Designers, that's one hour gone!
08:26I'm trying to work out the individual patterns
08:30I'm going to need for the stripes.
08:36Which is a bit of a mish.
08:37Do you know what I mean?
08:39Chris, in terms of answering the brief,
08:41it looks like there's a real statement piece
08:43coming together.
08:44Absolutely.
08:45And particularly those colours, massive contrast.
08:49Each of the contestants are being immediately judged
08:52on both their designs and choice of fabric.
08:55There it is, it's like a big puff sleeve dress.
08:57Oh, stunning.
08:58But wrong fabric!
08:59No, I think he'll look sick in that though.
09:01Hopefully.
09:02They need to ensure their personality and style
09:04comes through in an end product that could sell out
09:07on high streets around the country.
09:09Hi, Paul.
09:10Hello.
09:11You're happy with your fabric and stuff, yeah?
09:13It's not the ideal fabric.
09:14The fabric, I really wanted yellow florals.
09:18There's some yellow in there.
09:19So me and my sister, when we grew up,
09:21there was all these yellow flowers in the field
09:23on the Scottish coast.
09:24Right, OK.
09:25Shouldn't that be thermal then?
09:29When I was a lot younger,
09:30I studied fashion at Central Saint Martins, London,
09:33and it was a big culture shock to me and I ended up going home.
09:37It felt like I'd failed and I'd never get that opportunity again.
09:41I feel like this time it feels right and I'm a lot wiser
09:45and a lot more skilled now than I was back then.
09:47I can't wait to tell my sister.
09:49Me and my sister, we're mega Spice Girls fans.
09:5424-year-old Katie is hoping her puff sleeve maxi dress
09:58will open up a new future in fashion.
10:01The one area where I feel like my degree comes in handy
10:04is how mathsy sewing is.
10:06Oh, what's your degree in?
10:07There's so much maths involved in sewing.
10:09I did neuroscience, so loads of maths involved.
10:12You wouldn't think that, talking to me.
10:15I studied a degree in neuroscience.
10:17I did really enjoy it,
10:19but I just felt this craving to be creative again.
10:23Hi, Katie.
10:24Hi, Katie.
10:25How are you getting on?
10:26Yeah.
10:27As a neuroscientist,
10:28your left side of your brain must be going like the clappers, right?
10:31The creative side.
10:32Yeah.
10:33It's an amazing career choice.
10:35Yeah, I know.
10:36I don't know what my parents thought when I first told them.
10:39I'll tell you what they thought.
10:40What a waste of a degree.
10:41Yeah!
10:46It looks beautiful.
10:47Yeah.
10:48It feels very her.
10:49It does.
10:50You can definitely see it's a reflection of her style,
10:52her colour palette.
10:53Absolutely.
10:54Whether it feels unique enough,
10:56I guess we'll see when it comes together.
11:02Excited.
11:05As usual.
11:06I was born to do this, yeah.
11:08It's my passion.
11:10I've always sewn, yeah.
11:12My name's Julie Watson.
11:14I've been sewing since I was 13 years old.
11:16I got my first sewing machine.
11:18I had a little shop.
11:19It was a tiny little shop.
11:20I do alterations mainly.
11:22I've worked for myself for so long.
11:24I think I need to change a career.
11:26I think I can give Marks & Spencers that...
11:28What's that word?
11:29I think I'll give that...
11:30Desire.
11:32It's a bit Princess Diana-looking dress.
11:35Fitted, it's a bit floaty at the bottom.
11:38It's supposed to be for my mum, but she's not a size 10,
11:40but if she was, she'd wear this dress.
11:42Julie has opted for one of the more simplistic designs,
11:45a plain blue skater dress.
11:47But will her design prove overly simple
11:50to be the statement piece the experts are looking for?
11:53The design is quite simple.
11:55I think it'd be quite effective.
11:56Everybody's sort of gone a little bit over the top.
11:59Sometimes you don't always want that floral and pattern,
12:01you want something a little bit more streamlined,
12:03so I'm going for a plain colour.
12:06It's quite safe,
12:07and it would fit in Marks & Spencers fantastic, this one.
12:11Julie, it is quite a simple design,
12:13where some people really...
12:15Push the boundaries.
12:16Yeah.
12:17Julie has played it slightly safer,
12:19and she's really confident in it,
12:20so I'm looking forward to seeing what her design
12:22actually looks like once it's on the market.
12:24Nearly finished.
12:25Nearly finished?
12:26Yeah.
12:27I'm quite a fast machinist, yeah.
12:30Designers, you're half-way through!
12:33Having already finished her dress in half the time...
12:36Doesn't look very good on mannequin, though, does it?
12:39Doesn't look much.
12:40..Julie's confidence is slowly turning to crisis.
12:44It doesn't look as nice.
12:46Oh, gosh.
12:47It's a bit more like a nurse's outfit rather than a dress,
12:50so, look, it looks awful.
12:53You'll have to change your mind often,
12:56It's a mess.
12:57Right, I'm starting again.
13:25MUSIC
13:39Our ten amateur designers are over half-way through
13:42their statement piece challenge.
13:44And, unhappy with her original design,
13:46Julie has opted to start again from scratch.
13:49But with two hours remaining,
13:51will she be able to make a new dress in time?
13:54I need a scuba, scuba.
13:56They've only got white.
13:58You'll have to do quick decisions.
14:04Let's go.
14:05Julie looks like she's still got work cut out.
14:08She's essentially making two dresses rather than one.
14:11Wow.
14:12So, yeah, what we're going to end up with,
14:14in terms of answering that brief, I'm a little bit nervous.
14:18If I'm not up here and it's not right, you start again.
14:21Simple as.
14:22I'm not panicking, not yet, anyway.
14:25With her dream job on the line,
14:27Julie has to ensure her latest attempt stands out,
14:30as she's surrounded by nine other top amateur designers
14:34all vying for the same job.
14:37Believe it or not, this is my first dress I'm actually making
14:40in my life.
14:41I do streetwear, so the top half I kind of know it will work,
14:44but the bottom half, I'm not sure how that's going to drape.
14:47It's going to wing it, you know, just see what happens at the end.
14:50David's never worked on women's dresses before, has he?
14:52No, no, no. This is a huge, huge challenge.
14:54I really like his personal style
14:56and I just hope it actually comes through in his design work.
14:59Yeah, totally.
15:0121-year-old Ryan is the youngest designer
15:04and he's driven by his passion to get more accessible clothing
15:07into high street stores.
15:09I think it's important for me, it's important to represent,
15:12like, people like me.
15:14On the front, the button stand's fake.
15:16It's used with Velcro.
15:18And then underneath the tabs on the waist,
15:20there's actually hidden buttonholes,
15:22so if anyone needs tubing or people wear oxygen,
15:25it's easier to access.
15:27I was born without my forearm on my hand on my left side,
15:30so I'd either always have to alter clothes or just not buy them.
15:34So I've created it so it's adaptable and it's functional,
15:37so it caters to people that have disabilities
15:40or people that need that extra function when they call in.
15:43I love his design in terms of the accessibility.
15:46He's taken a chance, he's taken a risk,
15:48and we need people like that in M&S.
15:52Across the room, Maria is hoping her fabric
15:55will catch the expert's eye
15:57and give her a shot at a job in the world of fashion.
16:00I am super efficient because...
16:03..I usually have one day to make anything
16:05because I work four days a week in another job.
16:08So I wanted to design something that was desk to dinner,
16:11can to cornwall, barbecue to...
16:14..I don't know, bar mitzvah.
16:16Maria, I like the print she's chosen.
16:18She's doing brilliantly.
16:19But there's still only half the dress there
16:21and there's 40 minutes left.
16:22Very true, very true.
16:26With 40 minutes remaining,
16:27hoping her latest design style shines through is Julie.
16:31It's this easy, easy peasy.
16:33Who, incredibly, is already well on the way
16:36to finishing a second dress.
16:38Hi, Julie. Hello, love, you all right?
16:40Oh, that's nice.
16:41I'm just about finished, this is my second one.
16:43But this is a statement piece too.
16:45It's not looking very statementy at the minute.
16:47But I want a bright pink scuba. Right.
16:49Just to mix, I love pink.
16:50Am I even going to maybe put a pink finish on the bottom?
16:53See, the thing is, you've got about 40 minutes left.
16:55You could do a third and have a collection.
16:57Put my make-up on, get a bit of lipstick on.
16:59I've got time, haven't I? Exactly.
17:01First one's in the bin. Why?
17:03Wrong fabric, it looks like a nurse's outfit.
17:05Let's have a look.
17:07Oh, my God.
17:09Well, I'm not going to lie, Julie,
17:11but when I worked for Bolton Council,
17:13this reminds me of the tabard I used to wear.
17:19I already know who's won this challenge.
17:21Who?
17:23Agreed.
17:25I've seen her design.
17:27It's...sickening.
17:29We've just over half an hour to go.
17:31It seems Dalen is eyeing up his competition.
17:3444-year-old Dalen,
17:3644-year-old Dalen is eyeing up his competition.
17:3844-year-old fellow Zimbabwean, Tendai.
17:4044-year-old fellow Zimbabwean, Tendai.
17:42So, when I moved to Sheffield,
17:44I couldn't afford to go to fashion school.
17:46So, before I turned 40,
17:48I taught myself to sew,
17:50and a job came out
17:52with the NHS
17:54in their sewing room, and I applied.
17:56My love for sewing
17:58just grew even bigger.
18:00It was just unstoppable.
18:02Tendai's design is a vibrant print
18:04in yellow and turquoise,
18:06showcasing her love for colour
18:08in a bid to hit the bold brief.
18:10I like the bold colours.
18:12Yes.
18:14I just think everybody loves bright clothing.
18:16The Queen is my inspiration.
18:18Her love of bold colours and prints.
18:20I remember watching her
18:22when I was young and thinking,
18:24oh, this is what I want to be.
18:26You don't seem very nervous. You seem very calm.
18:28I know, because, I mean,
18:30God, nervous is not going to get you anywhere.
18:32Tendai is super interesting.
18:34She has gone for big bold prints,
18:36lots of layers,
18:38really original design.
18:40This, to me, has answered the brief
18:42in terms of bring your style
18:44to the party,
18:46be brave, push the boundaries,
18:48and I think that's exactly
18:50what she's going to produce.
18:52All right, everybody,
18:54this is your 30-minute call.
18:56Oh, my God.
18:58Armholes, armholes,
19:00armholes, armholes,
19:02and side seams. Oh, my God.
19:08Yeah, I feel like it's now
19:10an actual competition, and if you want to be part
19:12of Mark's suspense as family,
19:14you have to bring your game face.
19:16It's feeling like there's a lot at stake now.
19:18I just don't want to let anybody down.
19:20Everyone's chilled.
19:22I am not chilled.
19:24This is going to be tight.
19:30I should have gone for a pattern, maybe.
19:32Guys!
19:34Don't say three minutes. You've got five minutes left!
19:38I have no idea what I can do in five minutes,
19:40but it's better than no minutes.
19:42I love the design, it's just not finished.
19:44It's not a sewing challenge, it's a design challenge,
19:46so you'll be OK.
19:48That's it. I'm done.
19:50It's got my DNA on this dress, has.
19:52Does anyone need any help?
19:56Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
19:58You do something.
20:00This is not doing what I want it to do.
20:02I feel like it's too simple.
20:04Are you joking?
20:06I love it.
20:08You've got one minute left!
20:10How's it come together, let me tell you that.
20:12Five!
20:14Four!
20:16Three!
20:18Two!
20:20One!
20:22Designers, your time is up!
20:24Step away from your mannequins!
20:26Awesome!
20:28Oh, my God!
20:32If I see that dress,
20:34if somebody else has made it,
20:36I would have thought, well done you,
20:38but because I make it, I'm very critical of myself.
20:40It's the first challenge,
20:42so I thought, I don't want to go overboard,
20:44make a mess of myself and not finish an outfit.
20:46I'm feeling anxious.
20:48Yeah, I just hope it reflects
20:50what I want it to reflect.
20:52With ten summer dresses on their mannequins
20:54and firmly under the microscope,
20:56it's time to find out exactly
20:58what our experts think
21:00of these statement piece designs.
21:04Katie, I love this.
21:06You have literally put your personality into it.
21:08I'm in my late 40s,
21:10my eldest daughter's 25.
21:12I can see us both wearing this exact outfit.
21:14Yeah.
21:16And the sweet spot, certainly, at Marks & Spencer's
21:18is the mother and the daughter,
21:20both fighting over it in the closet,
21:22so you've nailed it.
21:24Aw, thank you so much.
21:26How were you feeling about your dress?
21:28It was second edition, this.
21:30I did a first one, so I started again.
21:32It is very impressive that you've got through
21:34two dresses.
21:36For me, I think you've played it really safe.
21:38I think with all your experience,
21:40for a big statement dress,
21:42I think you could have come up with a design
21:44that pushed you more.
21:48Well done.
21:50Whilst this is a really commercial
21:52summer dress, the brief was very much
21:54about being stand-out.
21:56You are filled with personality when you walk in a room
21:58and I think we just expected the design
22:00to be a bit bolder and a bit more confident.
22:02I think what you're wearing
22:04is really bold and beautiful.
22:06This, to me, just looks
22:08a little bit sad.
22:10Oh, I don't want you to cry, because I love what you're wearing.
22:12I know.
22:14And that's why she's called Scary Spice.
22:16LAUGHTER
22:18Whilst Sandeep has missed the mark,
22:20the experts have been clear
22:22on what they're looking for in the summer dress challenge.
22:24A clear representation
22:26of who the designers are.
22:28That jersey on the top
22:30is something that reflects your style,
22:32which is super cool.
22:34Thank you very much.
22:36While ensuring it's a bold statement...
22:38I think for me, I'd like to have seen something
22:40a bit more stand-out.
22:42..is forward-thinking.
22:44This is completely adaptive.
22:46All of the Velcro, the thought you've put into it.
22:48Honestly, I think you've done such a good job.
22:50The only thing for me,
22:52it feels a little bit dated.
22:54But always remaining
22:56commercially viable.
22:58One thing I would challenge commercially
23:00is just your skirt,
23:02insofar as of being able to walk in that.
23:04And two designers
23:06who the experts seem to think
23:08were hitting all of this
23:10were Daylon and Tendai.
23:12Thank you very much about making a statement dress,
23:14really being bold
23:16and reflecting your own personal style.
23:18And I think you've done a brilliant, brilliant job at that.
23:20So well done.
23:22I think you just nailed it.
23:24Everything about this dress is just exactly what you got told to do.
23:26But you've done it in your style.
23:28I really like it.
23:30APPLAUSE
23:32It definitely pushes
23:34what you can do with zero waste.
23:36What's a zero waste?
23:38Zero waste is where you use the entirety of the material.
23:40Nothing's in the bin.
23:42Wow.
23:44I absolutely love this. Honestly, I love this.
23:46The skill and the thought that has gone into it.
23:48The different fabrics.
23:50I just love the structure.
23:52It's completely original. It's completely your style.
23:54I think it's absolutely beautiful.
23:56Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.
23:58And when I looked at the design originally,
24:00I thought, wow, if you can nail this
24:02in this time, that is no mean feat.
24:04So really well done.
24:06I'd love to wear it.
24:08Thank you so much.
24:10APPLAUSE
24:18All right, designers.
24:20You've heard the comments.
24:22Let's find out how you've done.
24:24Mel, Anna and Maddie
24:26have now ranked the dresses
24:28from last place to the winner
24:30of the First Statement piece challenge.
24:32So, in last place,
24:34I can reveal
24:36that it is
24:38Julie.
24:40In ninth place,
24:42Sandy.
24:46Paul is eighth.
24:48Chris is seventh.
24:50David is sixth.
24:52Ryan fifth. And fourth is Maria.
24:54Now it's time to reveal
24:56the top three designers
24:58from the Statement piece challenge.
25:00In third place,
25:02Tendai.
25:04APPLAUSE
25:10Really well done.
25:12It was summer personified.
25:14It was bold. It represented
25:16your personal style.
25:18And it's the perfect summer dress.
25:20Well done. Thank you.
25:22In second place,
25:28Katie.
25:30APPLAUSE
25:34I think you should feel so proud of yourself.
25:36I mean, like I said before,
25:38I would wear that dress and so would my daughter.
25:40We'd be fighting over it.
25:42The detail, the asymmetrical stuff,
25:44the three tiers, perfect.
25:46So, the winner of the Statement piece challenge
25:48is...
25:50Dalen!
25:52APPLAUSE
25:56Now you're blushing.
25:58I'm red.
26:00I'm redder than your outfit.
26:02You know, there is so much skill that went into that.
26:04Just the detailing,
26:06the pattern design, it's beautiful.
26:08And honestly, we all absolutely loved it.
26:10So, well-deserved winner.
26:12Congratulations. It's brilliant.
26:14Well done.
26:16APPLAUSE
26:18Coming up on Dress The Nation...
26:20The next challenge is
26:22The Collection.
26:24Teamwork.
26:26No-one talk to me.
26:28Supposed to be working as a team, aren't we?
26:30This is all about making a collection
26:32and, like, mine just doesn't work.
26:34And the Marks & Spencer customers
26:36have their say.
26:38Dress? No.
26:52Dress The Nation.
26:54Brought to you by M&S.
27:00Turn down for what?
27:02Dress The Nation.
27:04Brought to you by M&S.
27:10Welcome back to Dress The Nation.
27:12As winners of the
27:14Statement piece challenge,
27:16Dalen, Katie and Tendai
27:18have been rewarded the role of team leaders
27:20for the next challenge.
27:22And get to pick their teams.
27:24Hey!
27:26We're going to do well.
27:28With an odd number of contestants...
27:30Julie. I might go home now, if you like.
27:32No, come on.
27:34..tenth place Julie joins Dalen's team.
27:36APPLAUSE
27:38The next challenge is
27:40The Collection.
27:42Mel, tell us more.
27:44So I want you to make and design
27:46a mini collection for a summer weekend away.
27:48And you're responsible
27:50for one item each.
27:52We want to see something that's really cohesive
27:54and with real purpose
27:56So whether that's going on your summer holidays
27:58to the beach, whether that's
28:00a city break, really bear that in mind.
28:02And just remember all of the best designers
28:04in M&S are all part of a team.
28:06This is about team effort,
28:08not just you.
28:10And there's a twist!
28:12It's not just going to be the experts
28:14that you're going to have to impress.
28:16You're also going to have to impress
28:18the customer.
28:20So I think that this is going to be
28:22an even more difficult challenge than the previous one.
28:24But good luck to you all.
28:26You will have five hours
28:28to bring your collections
28:30to life.
28:32And Bernard's been waiting to say this all day.
28:34So go on, I'm treating you.
28:36Ready, set, go!
28:38LAUGHTER
28:40The teams have five hours
28:42to create a collection that needs to impress
28:44real life M&S customers.
28:46Their critique will play heavily
28:48into who the M&S experts
28:50decide will be leaving the competition today.
28:52What is the secret
28:54to a successful summer collection?
28:56It's got to feel really versatile.
28:58So ways that you can, as a customer,
29:00dress it up, dress it down,
29:02wear it multiple different times.
29:04It's also got to tell
29:06a really clear story to the customer.
29:08I'm thinking City Break.
29:10You need to remember
29:12if we take each item
29:14and put it on its own,
29:16does it look...?
29:18It's got to be stand-alone and come together.
29:20Teams Hendaye
29:22have designed a City Break collection.
29:24They're using the same colours and materials
29:26in multiple items
29:28to bond them all together.
29:30So, have you got it?
29:32Let's go and smash this.
29:34So we're thinking beach getaway
29:36for the weekend.
29:38Maybe they're going to France, Saint-Tropez.
29:40So what colours are we thinking? Fabrics, things like that?
29:42I'm thinking more like neutrals,
29:44sand-tones. It's very on-trend right now.
29:46Team Katie are creating
29:48a combination perfect for the beach
29:50with a swimsuit, tailored shorts,
29:52jacket, shirt and a cover-up.
29:54While they're confident their neutral colours
29:56are on-trend, are they pushing
29:58the style boundaries far enough
30:00to wow the experts?
30:02OK, let's do it. We've got this.
30:04The lining will finish
30:06sort of on the thigh.
30:08The approach
30:10that I've taken is
30:12being less of a dictator.
30:14We want to get everyone's personalities
30:16across. And I think we've actually got that down
30:18quite nicely. I think our unique
30:20interpretations are going to come across
30:22as being quite different.
30:24Team Dalen have brought their individual
30:26flavours to their collection.
30:28But with a pink and blue two-piece,
30:30a beige jacket, a blue floral
30:32print dress and a yellow,
30:34pink and white evening dress,
30:36there's a lot of varying styles.
30:38So what are the downfalls
30:40that could happen in this challenge?
30:42If they've not really thought about how
30:44to deliver this in a really coherent
30:46way, how the fabrics talk
30:48to each other and how they complement each other,
30:50then I think that could certainly set
30:52them back. So everyone's got to be
30:54aligned. Absolutely.
30:56For Julie,
30:58this could be her final chance to
31:00prove herself as a worthy candidate
31:02for the dream M&S job,
31:04having come last in the first challenge.
31:06The judges' criticism,
31:08I've took it all on board. I know exactly
31:10where I've gone wrong. It's got to be
31:12this today. I want to stay in this competition
31:14for a reason. A job at M&S?
31:18For me to win the competition
31:20would be absolutely amazing,
31:22to be honest. Seeing my clothes
31:24in M&S, I think I'd be absolutely
31:26gobsmacked. I've got to
31:28prove myself. I've been chucked
31:30at deep end out of groups. I've got to just push
31:32myself to that, see how far I can do it.
31:34Julie! Hello, dear.
31:36Hello, how are you? I'm all right,
31:38thank you. I'm concentrating.
31:40I've got a big job ahead of me. What is it
31:42you're doing? I'm making a jacket.
31:44Are you? It's sort of a casual
31:46loose jacket, not quite as if it's
31:48a bit boxy. So you're going to have
31:50a really coherent collection?
31:52Yeah, hopefully. Touch wood.
31:58I'm really intrigued to see how this one comes together.
32:00Definitely school blazer vibes.
32:02Very old-fashioned. I just feel
32:04she's lacking some design skill, that's my
32:06concern.
32:10I love burnt orange, it's a very
32:12healing colour.
32:14It kind of makes you feel really good.
32:16Yeah. Okay. Lush.
32:18Oh, that's going to look sick.
32:20Yeehaw!
32:22We are absolutely smashing
32:24this. It's interesting to
32:26observe the different team dynamics.
32:28There's definitely some
32:30who feel like they're working very
32:32collaboratively. Lots of talking,
32:34good communication. We work
32:36so well together, just vibing.
32:38Absolutely. We are the vibe.
32:42Feeling good? Yeah, yeah. Aren't you team?
32:44Yeah, yeah.
32:46We're Dave and the team, but
32:48a little bit quieter over here.
32:50They're not coming together as a four.
32:52No one talk to me.
32:54We're supposed to be working as a
32:56team, aren't we? Are we working
32:58as a team?
33:02I'm doing the swimming costume. And we've gone with this
33:04blue because Ryan's jacket
33:06is actually like a navy stripe.
33:08You can't quite tell, but I think
33:10going with the blue will make the collection
33:12look a bit more cohesive.
33:14Team Katie's beachwear collection
33:16uses largely neutral tones,
33:18but they're maintaining cohesion
33:20with the blue of Katie's swimsuit,
33:22complementing the subtle blue stripes
33:24of Ryan's fabric.
33:26Hiya, Ryan. Hello. How are you?
33:28I'm good. So what are you working on?
33:30So this is like a new take on
33:32a lightweight summer jacket.
33:34How do the pieces all coordinate together?
33:36So we're going to be using,
33:38in terms of fabrics, we've selected very neutral colours
33:40because they're very on trend right now.
33:42It comes in the functionality.
33:44You can throw it all in a bag,
33:46go on holiday, don't have to take a suitcase.
33:48Neutrals are massive for the summer.
33:50And it's just perfect, like you say,
33:52for putting it in a suitcase, jetting away.
33:54So I think you've kind of nailed it
33:56in terms of that bit of the brief.
33:58So that's fantastic.
34:00I'm definitely doing the trouser
34:02and the top in this pink denim.
34:04OK, pink. Yeah.
34:06Maria has changed her trousers
34:08from blue to pink,
34:10meaning Sandeep's dress is now
34:12the only blue item in the collection.
34:16There's this print, which I wonder
34:18how coherent it's going to feel.
34:22I thought Marie was doing denim blue.
34:24It's pink.
34:26There's no blue, Sandeep.
34:28Oof!
34:30Marie was going to sew
34:32a blue pair of trousers,
34:34and that's why I went down the blue path,
34:36just to be cohesive with them.
34:38The next time I look up,
34:40no-one's sewing anything blue.
34:42You OK, Sandeep? What's wrong?
34:44What are you looking for?
34:46I'm just a bit upset.
34:48Why? Don't get upset. Stop, stop, stop.
34:50What's up?
34:52My garment is...
34:54It doesn't fit with the team.
34:56This is all about teamwork.
34:58It's all about making a collection,
35:00and, like,
35:02mine just isn't in the collection, essentially.
35:04It just doesn't work.
35:20Dress the Nation.
35:22Brought to you by M&S.
35:26Welcome back to Dress the Nation,
35:28where the group challenge is proving
35:30precisely that.
35:32Challenging for Team Dailon.
35:34After a change to Marie's design
35:36wasn't communicated to Sandeep
35:38by Team Leader Dailon,
35:40she's ended up with a blue dress
35:42in a collection of pink, yellow
35:44and white.
35:46Dress the Nation.
35:48Brought to you by M&S.
35:50Welcome back to Dress the Nation,
35:52where the group challenge is proving
35:54precisely that.
35:56After a change to Marie's design
35:58wasn't communicated to Sandeep
36:00by Team Leader Dailon,
36:02she's ended up with a blue dress
36:04in a collection of pink, yellow
36:06and white garments,
36:08and Sandeep is now concerned
36:10her dream job might be slipping away.
36:12Are you using blue?
36:14Or is Sandeep going to use pink and yellow?
36:16Well, I'm going to have to use a bit of...
36:18I mean, it'd be easier for Sandeep
36:20to put pink on hers,
36:22given the competition.
36:24I think I just need some reassurance
36:26that I'm doing the right thing.
36:28Honestly, you know what you're doing,
36:30don't doubt yourself.
36:32I was just trying to figure out a way
36:34to bring mine closer to yours.
36:36Is there any space for piping or anything like that?
36:38Yes.
36:40Like a yellow piping, maybe?
36:42Yeah, and then I can just sew that
36:44at the bottom of the cutout.
36:46Everyone else's outfit has an essence
36:48of yellow in it,
36:50so you just focus on your beautiful dress
36:52and then just chuck a bit of that on later.
36:54Cool. All right. Thank you.
36:56Hi, Tendai.
36:58How are the boys getting on?
37:00Do you feel comfortable just letting the boys
37:02get on with it?
37:04Oh, yeah. These are pros.
37:06I've got the best team.
37:08Oh, hello! That's so cute!
37:10I mean, the only thing you can do
37:12is put some back darts in at this point.
37:14I'm happy with the front look.
37:16Or do a pleat to match the trouser.
37:18That was very much a good idea.
37:20Hey, teams, you've got 30 minutes left.
37:22Oh, my gosh.
37:24Zipping, pleats done,
37:26she's all good, she's about to go on the mannequin
37:28and get a waistband, and then I'm finished.
37:30It's good. I would maybe do a little bit
37:32less fabric there.
37:36Having struggled with his role
37:38as team leader throughout this challenge,
37:40the pressure is taking its toll
37:42on Dalen.
37:44I sewed this section of the skirt wrong.
37:48How on earth did I do that?
37:50That is just insane.
37:52I won't have enough time to, like,
37:54recut anything, so I'll have to adapt
37:56what is here. I'm worried I'm letting this
37:58side down. No, you're not.
38:00Meanwhile, team Tendai are going from strength
38:02to strength, and are even adding
38:04additional items to their collection.
38:06Because it's a weekend,
38:08I'm going to do a weekend bag. A cute bag
38:10would be a touch. Yeah. Accessories is a
38:12huge part of going away as well. Everyone needs
38:14a weekend bag, and this is weekend away,
38:16so I feel like it's a really core part of our
38:18collection. Nothing quite like
38:20winging it, is there?
38:22I'm sure we can pull it out the bag.
38:24Literally. I think, you know,
38:26although we're being judged on our individual pieces,
38:28I think we're creating a really cohesive
38:30look. You've got ten minutes
38:32to go!
38:34Look at that bit! It's gone ever so
38:36warm.
38:38Do you want me to keep them singular
38:40bags, or do you want me to make them
38:42reversible? I think reversible.
38:44Sweet.
38:46I'm getting angry at
38:48these trousers now.
38:50Something's going on
38:52with the sleeve. I like it. It looks twisted.
38:54Don't think about that. That doesn't matter. You can't change
38:56it now. Get it finished.
38:58Yeah, because that's going to be the inside,
39:00and that's going to be the outside. Yeah.
39:06Right, everyone, you've got two minutes!
39:10Oh, that's so good.
39:12We're the colour queens.
39:14It looks good. You know what?
39:16Your colour. It was a good choice
39:18because it brings out the blue in that.
39:20Chin, chin.
39:22You've done it. Sandy, how are you doing?
39:24Yeah, I just need to sew a button on.
39:26You literally have seconds.
39:28Let's go, let's go.
39:30Where am I going, where am I going?
39:32This one, this one, this one.
39:34Three, two,
39:36one, time's up!
39:38Well done, girl!
39:40To see that
39:42me and my team managed to
39:44create a beautiful collection
39:46in the time that we're given,
39:48I feel so proud. I hope that Max
39:50and Spencer customers see the vision.
39:52My yellow isn't popping enough.
39:54It's there, though. It's there, though.
39:56It's there. It doesn't matter.
39:58That was a roller coaster
40:00of epic proportions.
40:04They work so, so
40:06well together, and actually,
40:08you really can see, love it or hate it,
40:10it is very cohesive,
40:12and I love the bag.
40:14They've pushed the boundaries,
40:16clearly working collaboratively as a team to just
40:18stretch and add something
40:20which I think is a massive, massive
40:22kind of bonus.
40:24The natural kind
40:26of colourways, really massively
40:28on trend at the moment.
40:30Our customers love linen, and it's also
40:32trending, and blue and white stripes
40:34in particular are very much
40:36of the moment. It just feels as a bit of an
40:38overall collection, slightly safe,
40:40slightly predictable, it's not
40:42anything I've not seen before.
40:44I completely agree. We're expecting somebody
40:46that's going to come with new designs
40:48and new ideas, and show us something
40:50that we've not really seen before.
40:52We were really clear in terms of
40:54make this a cohesive,
40:56coherent message in terms of
40:58an overall collection. It just doesn't
41:00sit together as a collection at all,
41:02though, really, does it? And I'm not
41:04quite sure what to make of
41:06Dalen's outfit. No, I know. I think
41:08compared to where he was
41:10in his first one, which we
41:12all absolutely loved,
41:14I'm not quite sure
41:16what's happened here. I can see what
41:18Julie was trying to achieve here with the jacket,
41:20you know, contrasting lining.
41:22I don't know how contemporary it is.
41:24It's not contemporary at all.
41:26So this is Sandeep's dress.
41:28She's definitely applied a lot more detail
41:30than we think to the first dress, but
41:32it's a real mix of pieces,
41:34isn't there?
41:40So we know what the experts think,
41:42but what do the public think?
41:44Ooh, they look judgy.
41:46We've invited some real-life
41:48M&S customers along to see if
41:50any of the collections would have them
41:52parting wares with their cash.
41:54Ooh, they're really checking things, aren't they?
41:56I love the trousers. I think
41:58they're super flattering, really cute,
42:00I also love the top.
42:02I'd maybe wear this and this one together
42:04rather than this and this one.
42:06I don't disagree with that.
42:08I would 100% take this all to the till with me.
42:14I think it's flattering,
42:16and it's also what I would expect to see
42:18at Marks and Spencer's, too.
42:20Killed it. I love how it's the nod
42:22to trends as well, but I love the fact
42:24that it's edgier enough that I think my teenage
42:26daughters are going to help themselves as well.
42:28And it's win-win if we can all
42:30help ourselves to each other's wardrobes.
42:32Agreed.
42:36Don't know if these four items
42:38go together particularly. I mean, when you think
42:40about collections, fashion collections,
42:42you usually have, you know, little
42:44bits of other bits put to them,
42:46you know, to make it all sort of coordinate.
42:50Blazer. No, I wouldn't get it.
42:52Ooh!
42:54Dress. This is cute if you wanted to try
42:56something different, but no.
43:02It is what it is.
43:04We've done our best.
43:06Look, we did try. You know, it is what it is.
43:08Mixed reviews
43:10from the customers leave some hard
43:12decisions for the experts, as they
43:14now have to decide who's still in the running
43:16for that incredible job opportunity
43:18and who simply isn't
43:20M&S material.
43:22Two completely different challenges
43:24were weak, and it's been
43:26interesting, to say the least. It's a real
43:28mix, to be honest. I'm excited at
43:30kind of the prospects of some of them, but really
43:32surprised how there's literally
43:34been somebody that was the best yesterday
43:36and probably in the bottom
43:38two or three today. Yeah.
43:40In challenge one, when we saw Dalen's dress,
43:42I think all of us were kind of quite blown away
43:44by the design, the originality.
43:46And then on the second challenge,
43:48I just don't know what he was thinking.
43:50Who's in danger? There's a couple
43:52of people for me. First, I still think
43:54Julie. I think the tennis dress
43:56yesterday, unfortunately,
43:58was a real red flag for me, and I feel like
44:00we've gone from almost tennis
44:02dress to tennis blazer.
44:04See, I don't mind
44:06the blazer. I really don't mind the blazer at all.
44:08It's really divided opinion, the blazer.
44:10What did your customers think of
44:12that blazer? I would say
44:14at least half or more
44:16did like it. It's really,
44:18really tough. Let's talk about
44:20Sandeep, shall we? Because in the
44:22summer dress challenge,
44:24she found it quite difficult, didn't she?
44:26In terms of knocking out
44:28of the park from answering the brief,
44:30from being bold, pushing the boundaries,
44:32representing her
44:34personality and her style,
44:36that's where it failed.
44:38It sounds like
44:40Sandeep, Dalen and
44:42Julie are all in the danger
44:44zone. I don't think Julie should be in the danger
44:46zone. Well, it looks like you three
44:48have a lot to hash out then.
44:50It's a toughie to decide, kind of, winners
44:52and losers on this one.
45:00Designers, congratulations
45:02on an amazing first week.
45:04You've produced some sensational
45:06outfits. However,
45:08there can be only one
45:10outstanding collection.
45:12The experts
45:14have taken on the customer
45:16feedback and made their final
45:18decision.
45:20The team with the
45:22must-have collection, and therefore
45:24safely through to next week
45:26is...
45:32Team Tender!
45:34Wow.
45:36I still can't believe it.
45:38I knew we created something good
45:40but I'm really shocked.
45:42But I'm buzzing.
45:44So proud.
45:46And what a team leader. Really, really
45:48kind of clear in terms of the direction
45:50that was set. Well done, Team Tender.
45:56Well done.
45:58Well done.
46:00Well done.
46:02Well done.
46:06Should have made a hanky.
46:08Well done.
46:12Unfortunately, that means one of you
46:14from the remaining teams will be
46:16heading home.
46:18It was very, very tough
46:20and it wasn't a unanimous
46:22decision.
46:24The designer leaving the competition
46:26is...
46:28Julie.
46:34Come on, bring it in.
46:36You've been amazing.
46:38Thanks for having me.
46:40Have you enjoyed it?
46:42It's been such fun. Thanks.
46:44It's been fantastic
46:46and I've enjoyed every little minute of it
46:48from start to finish.
46:50What an experience.
46:52So grateful to be here.
46:54And it's been lovely.
46:56Next time on Dress The Nation...
46:58This week is
47:00all about lingerie.
47:02Please.
47:04Everything could go wrong.
47:06Get it in, get it done. Chop, chop!
47:08I chose a really complicated design.
47:10Almost there.
47:12Quick, take it off, take it off, take it off.
47:14She's very
47:16ready.
