00:00And that's where we're going to begin here on the show.
00:05Kansas City needed a late penalty in order to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals.
00:10But now they'll need a running back behind Patrick Mahomes to carry the load because
00:15Isaiah Pacheco has a broken fibula in his leg.
00:18It's being reported by multiple outlets.
00:21And he's headed to IR, which means a four week absence.
00:25But the speculation is it could potentially even be longer than that.
00:30And fibula is a leg, folks.
00:32So this is a broken leg going to keep him out.
00:33I mean, a month would be on the optimistic side, I think, here.
00:37So right now, Pacheco out for Kansas City.
00:40It's not like they have a viable backup.
00:42Their former first round pick Clyde Edwards-Hilaire is on injured reserve as well.
00:46So they'll have to make some sort of move to pick up the pieces there.
00:49But at the very least, they are 2-0 and they needed every point that they could on a late
00:53fourth down penalty.
00:55The Chiefs end up getting a first down and then Harrison Butler kicks a field goal.
00:59They were outplayed by the Cincinnati Bengals in this game.
01:03But as Chiefs magic would have it, they end up winning this one as Patrick Mahomes and
01:08Travis Kelsey and company end up winning but not covering clearly that six or five and
01:13a half point spread that was going into Sunday.
01:16Needless to say, Joe Burrow coming up just short in that game, a little argument with
01:20Jamar Chase in that game as well with some key penalties.
01:24But a very dejected Burrow after the game talked about the loss.
01:27You know, we felt good about the game plan, I was seeing it well, we were protected, you
01:36know, just didn't do enough to get it done.
01:38How frustrating is this loss game?
01:42As frustrating as I've had.
01:44Why?
01:46I'm going to have to kind of think about that one a couple days and I have to ask me that
01:54again on Wednesday.
01:57Really candid Joe Burrow, they outplayed Kansas City should have won that game, in my opinion,
02:01without a doubt.
02:02You know who else should have won last night, the Chicago Bears, if they had any semblance
02:05of a game plan.
02:06What in the world was going on in that game?
02:08They have a first round quarterback throwing to the running backs over and over the Houston
02:13Texans was just like here.
02:14Go ahead and win the game.
02:16And the Bears couldn't.
02:17I mean, normally I'm sleeping at the end of these things, but I just couldn't believe
02:20it.
02:21I was watching this one from start to finish 19 to 13.
02:24The final another underdog, by the way, covering in this one as Houston ends up winning.
02:29It was really their defense that gave Caleb Williams fits all day long that the Bears
02:33offensive line struggle.
02:34That's for sure.
02:35But I mean, you have DJ more you have a doomsday and all these different weapons and it just
02:41felt like they didn't either trust the line or trust the quarterback in this one.
02:45But good teams win and great teams cover.
02:47I guess that's fair to say if you took the Bears, you came out on top and we'll start
02:52with D'Amico Ryan's who knew that it was basically the defense that ended up carrying them in
02:56this one.
02:57Well, it starts in front with our defensive line, like we'll Daniel Mario, all the guys,
03:02the way they were rushing like together and the way we were covering and covering in the
03:06back end that really set things apart for so, you know, credits of steam.
03:12And come on for the way they cover allowing those guys to get the pressure.
03:15You don't get pressure unless the coverage is tight.
03:17So those guys cover well and allow the rush to get there.
03:21I think right now the defense of Houston carrying them for the most part played well against
03:25Indianapolis again last week as well.
03:28Meanwhile, on the offensive side for the Bears again, Caleb Williams top pick in the draft
03:32struggling through his first two games.
03:34They did beat Tennessee.
03:36Thanks to some big mistakes by Tennessee Caleb Williams after the game last night, basically
03:40talking about the keyword of the NFL these days execution, not coming out with a win,
03:46not executing, you know, we needed to as a team, you know, myself throwing two interceptions.
03:56It's not something I've done.
04:00Something that I do is turn the ball over.
04:02It's not really my, you know, my thing.
04:04So, you know, I think those those things probably the things that I'm most, you know, frustrated
04:12about, you know, back out there, you know, you know, we didn't we didn't execute the
04:19way we needed to and, you know, we're going to keep getting better.
04:23Everything's about the responses.
04:24You know, it's week two is what the guys are, obviously, I'm, you know, a young guy.
04:29But I understand it's a long season.
04:31I'm understanding that it's week two, understanding that we're going to respond and, you know,
04:37just get better every day, get better at practice, you know, all these different things throughout
04:41the weeks, attention to details and things like that.
04:45Still a long season.
04:46But Justin Fields, Caleb Williams, don't look that much different to me, at least through
04:50a couple of games.
04:51All right, let's get to the other games in the NFL.
04:53The New York Jets pick up their first win of the season.
04:55They need a late touchdown.
04:57Aaron Rodgers delivered.
04:58And they end up beating the Tennessee Titans, who fall to 0-2, final score 24-17.
05:03Jets' rare road favorite winning and covering in the NFL.
05:08That's like dinosaur style these days, but they did very late in the game.
05:12Brees Hall had a big game.
05:13Braylon Allen scored a couple of touchdowns when Hall came out of the game, so the Jets
05:16improved to 1-1 and they played Thursday.
05:19Meanwhile, one of the late games, Cardinals-Rams, this game was over before it even started.
05:24Like I turned on for the late games and it was like 21-0.
05:28Marvin Harrison, four catches, one 30 and two touchdowns.
05:31The story from the Rams out of this one.
05:33Pukunukuwa on injured reserve.
05:35There's a chance right now they will not have Cooper Cupp for the immediate future.
05:39He left with an ankle injury.
05:40Meanwhile, Baker Mayfield, one of the big stunners of the day.
05:43They go to Detroit and win as underdogs 20-16.
05:47The final, Chris Godwin had seven catches, 117 yards and a touchdown.
05:52Baker playing fantastic, running the ball into the end zone as well.
05:58Detroit gave them some opportunities they shouldn't have had.
06:02Some interesting play calling as well.
06:03We'll talk about that a little bit later on.
06:05Dan Campbell talks about that in our sound off segment.
06:08Also, the New Orleans Saints go to Dallas and crush the Cowboys final 44-19.
06:14Alvin Kamara had one of those yearly games where he scores three touchdowns.
06:18It was yesterday, 115 on the ground and three, two catches, 65 through the air and a touchdown.
06:24He was just absolutely fantastic.
06:26All right, 49ers, again, favorites going on the road and losing outright 23-17.
06:32Minnesota Vikings come up with the win there.
06:34Sam Darnold played well.
06:35The Seahawks beat the Patriots in overtime.
06:38And Geno Smith needed to rally the troops late for this one.
06:41They end up winning.
06:42The Browns beat the Jaguars 18-13.
06:45Trevor Lawrence now has lost seven games in a row.
06:48And the Raiders, eight and a half point underdogs and trailing by two touchdowns late
06:52in the game, come back to win 26-23.
06:55Crazy games yesterday in the NFL.
06:56All right, new AP poll is out.
06:58Texas is now number one.
06:59The Longhorns have played fantastic football, whether it has been Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning.
07:05Manning threw five touchdowns over the weekend.
07:06Miami's also in the top 10.
07:08Georgia escapes in Lexington 13-12.
07:14Georgia got to get that offense going.
07:15And the Apple Cup, very early on in the season, Washington State beats Washington by a final of 24-19.
07:23Usually, they play this game.
07:24Don't they play this like Thanksgiving night or something like that?
07:28But not this year, I guess.
07:30All right, Yankees, Red Sox.
07:31Yankees take three out of four.
07:32They're controlling the division.
07:33Lots of words going back and forth with this one with the Yankees and Red Sox arguing, fighting all weekend.
07:38Story for another day.
07:39We don't have time for it.
07:40Tyler Glass now out for the season with an elbow injury.
07:44He packed up his gear and left this weekend in Atlanta before heading to Miami.
07:49Kind of bizarre story there.
07:51How about the Detroit Tigers, folks?
07:53They are right in the midst of this playoff chase, two-and-a-half games back of the third wildcard spot.
07:59They win again, three in a row.
08:01Maybe the Tigers sneak into the playoffs.
08:04Also, Alec Boehm has been activated off the injured list.
08:07He had a left-hand strain.
08:10Over in Indiana, we got some updates on sports betting revenue.
08:13More than $300 million wagered online in sportsbooks, pushing the year to date over $3 billion.
08:20How about Kaitlin Clark over the weekend?
08:2235 points as the Fever end up getting a win, and Kaitlin Clark has been red hot for them.
08:29Asia Wilson, first player to score 1,000 points.
08:32Jon Rahm wins the LIV Golf Tournament this week.
08:34Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid.
08:36If you're a sports bettor in Washington, D.C., stay tuned because some of those kiosks that you see around town are going to look a little bit different in October.
08:44Let's bring in Matthew Waters from Legal Sports Report.
08:46We'll talk about that.
08:47By the way, everything we discuss over at legalsportsreport.com.
08:50You can read about it as well.
08:51Matt, great to have you back here on Newswire.
08:52Hope you had a good weekend.
08:54I did, sir.
08:55Thanks for having me.
08:56All right, let's get started here.
08:57And, you know, once upon a time when sports betting became legal, the first company to really be out in the forefront with it, not Vandal, not DraftKings, it was actually FoxBet because Fox NFL Sunday popped up and it was like, boom, here.
09:11Here's where you can bet, FoxBet.
09:13You know, mixed results there.
09:14I would say probably didn't work out.
09:16But, boy, Fox had, you know, a card in their pocket that they're pulling out here.
09:20I didn't even realize this, that they had the option to purchase a piece of FanDuel.
09:25Tell us more about that.
09:27Good move by them.
09:29Great move by them.
09:30What happened, Craig, was that Flutter bought a company called The Stars Group, and The Stars Group was the company that partnered with Fox to run FoxBet, which, just an aside, FoxBet only closed a year ago.
09:44It feels like it happened so much longer ago to me than just a year.
09:49But so that is mostly why FoxBet wound up dying, because Flutter owned FanDuel, stronger brand, and so they just kind of did what they had to with FoxBet, and then they came to the agreement last year that it was cut off.
10:02But Fox does have this agreement to buy an 18.6% stake in FanDuel, and it's been in court for a little while, and things were messy because of this.
10:12Part of it is the reason why we have Flutter listed in the U.S. and not FanDuel, because Fox would have to give their approval toward any IPO moving forward.
10:23Now, Lachlan Murdoch, the CEO of Fox, said that they will be acting on this at an analyst conference last week.
10:31The main reason is because right now it will cost Fox about $4.3 billion to buy that stake.
10:41The stake is valued at—has FanDuel valued at $20 million, and there was arguments over that, too.
10:49Fox wanted to pay it $11 billion, and then FanDuel a couple years ago was saying, well, we're worth like $30 million.
10:56So they came in at $20 million.
10:59The estimate for FanDuel now, though, is it's worth about $35 billion as a standalone, not as part of Flutter.
11:08So that puts that 18.6% stake at about $6.5 billion.
11:12So Lachlan Murdoch came out and said, well, there's no way we're going to miss out on $2 billion on the table.
11:18That is essentially what it comes down to.
11:21They have this, and he said, by the way, we think it's going to keep growing.
11:25The tricky part about this, Craig, is that with a stake that big, anything over 5%, you have to be licensed in the gaming world.
11:34And so Fox—Lachlan said that they have started with these gaming licenses, and the deal cannot go through until then.
11:42Now, luckily, they have plenty of time.
11:442030 is when the deal would expire, the option would expire.
11:48So they will be able to do it at some point, but we don't know how long that'll take.
11:54You know, it seems like the licensing process can move quickly in some of these new states with how fast the apps get up.
12:00But a lot of the states work off of temporary licenses, and it'll say something in the law to the effect of, well, if you already operate in five or more U.S. states, we can just assume that you're okay.
12:13We'll give you that temporary license.
12:15We'll check the very, you know, bare minimum things, and then we'll do a deeper dive into you.
12:19And Fox isn't going to have that luxury.
12:21So it'll take a little while to get them licensed.
12:26But, you know, the other part of it is he said, look, we love sports betting to interact with sports fans.
12:33You know, I mean, they own half the NFL every weekend, right?
12:37And then if they get a stake in FanDuel, they'll just be even more incentivized.
12:43So it's going to be interesting to see how this goes.
12:47I always expected Fox to go through with this option because, again, FanDuel has just been on a rocket ever since sports betting started.
12:55But to hear that it is actually going to happen and that the licensing is through is definitely big news.
13:01Yeah, I mean, having a piece of FanDuel or DraftKings at this point has to be on the positive side of ownership.
13:06Now, if you owned or the owners of Gambit were in play, that's probably not a good — that was not a good investment.
13:15Because Gambit, as we know, is now out of Washington, D.C.
13:19That's primarily where they were.
13:21And they had their form of, I guess, sports betting operation through these kiosks, is my understanding.
13:28And again, I'm reading about this over Legal Sports Report.
13:31But they've been out. We've known this for a while.
13:33But what we didn't know is who was going to be taking over these kiosks.
13:37And my understanding is there has to be more than 50 in place by the beginning of October.
13:42So without ruining the story completely, which sports betting company is taking over for Gambit?
13:48And what did I miss as part of the story?
13:51Well, it is an interesting story.
13:53It's Caesars that's going to take over.
13:54And basically, at some point between today and October, they're supposed to get those kiosks in.
14:01It has to be in by that October date.
14:04It's interesting, Craig, because Gambit was a partnership between the D.C. Lottery and Intralot.
14:10And Intralot came into the U.S. thinking, well, we can get recreational bettors.
14:14And so we're going to juice those lines a little bit more.
14:17And the D.C. Lottery unfortunately said, OK, cool, we're with that.
14:21And it didn't work. Right.
14:23We had in the middle of the pandemic, Craig, you had people lining up around the block to go to the William Hill kiosk at Capital One Arena instead of betting online with Gambit.
14:35That's how bad the odds were.
14:36And so it's a bit poetic justice that Caesars is taking over because Caesars is the one that bought William Hill.
14:42So Caesars will now be in charge of all of those kiosks.
14:48Look, those kiosks have been the source of a few interesting stories from D.C.
14:54We had one guy at a sushi shop take them for almost a million dollars.
15:01They had to cut out some sports they were offering because of that.
15:06The kiosks have been interesting, but Caesars is going to take over control of them now.
15:10And we had a little bit more news from D.C. last week as Fanatics is now live in the D.C. market as well.
15:16So it's a huge shift for D.C.
15:18Going from only Gambit being available throughout D.C.
15:23on your phone, except for those federal areas, to now you have Caesars, DraftKings, Bandle, BetMGM, and the numbers show it.
15:31The numbers, they've been doing very well so far compared to what it just was with Gambit.
15:37So D.C. sports betting, we're going to keep talking about it, Craig, because more people are looking at it saying, you know, oh, maybe I can get in there.
15:46And the O.L.G. tried for so long, the Office of Lottery and Gaming in D.C., they tried for so long to say, look, COVID just ruined sports betting in D.C.
15:55People work from home. We don't get the same kind of traffic.
15:58And we're seeing that, no, it was just a bad sports betting product.
16:02Yeah, I would agree. All right.
16:03Let's close it out here and end on this story.
16:06That's now I mean, it feels like it's a couple of years old already.
16:09These allegations against these athletes that were at Iowa and Iowa State, if I'm not mistaken, they were I believe they were found to do less doing or almost no wrong doing as far as these allegations were concerned.
16:22And now everybody, of course, that was an athlete that was involved is now jumping back on board saying, well, you came after us.
16:28We're going to come after you. And I know there's an update in the case.
16:31Well, and rightly so, Craig, we had four more plaintiffs join in and a couple from Iowa State, a couple from Iowa.
16:40So it was 11 total.
16:42It was 10 athletes and I think a basketball manager who joined in.
16:46But basically what happened was they used this technology to see where people were gambling on these apps to track hits on that.
16:54And it was done without a warrant. And the investigating body knew that they needed a warrant before they did it.
17:01So naturally, it all got thrown out. And now people are coming back and saying, whoa, you know, we missed out on seizing your seasons for this.
17:08We missed out on, you know, I dropped draft picks because of this, you know, whatever it could be.
17:12These guys are obviously affected. And so they they want a little bit of that back.
17:17All right. Well, again, this is the problem here. Sometimes aggressiveness can get you in trouble.
17:22And on the flip side, maybe it'll work out for these student athletes who are suing.
17:26Thanks again, Matthew. We'll read about that story and everything else over at LegalSportsReport.com.
17:30Thanks for coming on. Thanks, sir. Take care.
