00:00You cannot recall what it was like to be dead. That might sound strange, but it's true.
00:07Before you were born, you were dead for a vast stretch of time.
00:12This period lasted approximately 13.8 billion years, if science is to be believed.
00:18During this time you did not exist in any conscious form,
00:22and thus you have no memories, no sensations and no experiences to recount.
00:27This simple fact should offer some comfort, but it rarely does.
00:32Many people live with a deep-seated fear of death,
00:35an anxiety that shapes behaviours, thoughts and emotions in profound ways.
00:40This fear stems from the unknown and the finality that death represents.
00:45You struggle to comprehend your own non-existence
00:48because your entire life is built around the experience of being.
00:52From the moment you are born, you begin a journey that is inevitably leading towards death.
00:58This realisation can be overwhelming, casting a long shadow over your existence.
01:05The concept of nothingness, of simply ceasing to be,
01:09is one that is nearly impossible for the human mind to grasp.
01:13We are a creature of sensation, thought and emotion,
01:18constantly interacting with the world around us.
01:21The idea that all of this will one day stop is terrifying.
01:25It is a fear that lurks in the background of your mind,
01:29influencing your actions and decisions, even if you are not always consciously aware of it.
01:35Yet, it is also a fear that binds you together with others,
01:39a shared understanding that regardless of your differences, you all face the same end.
01:46In your daily life, you carry the subconscious understanding that you are mortal.
01:52This awareness influences everything you do.
01:55From the choices you make to the risks you take,
01:58your actions are often driven by a desire to avoid death or extend your life as much as possible.
02:05Your body is a temporary vessel God has given for a brief period.
02:10This concept might seem unsettling, but it is a reality that binds all living beings.
02:16At some point, this vessel must return to the source from which it came.
02:22The place where it returns is not unfamiliar.
02:25It is the same nothingness from which it emerged.
02:28Consider for a moment the journey of your existence.
02:32You come into this world from a place of nothingness,
02:35an incomprehensible state of non-being.
02:38You spend your life building experiences, relationships and memories,
02:43all while knowing that you will return to that same nothingness.
02:48This cycle of life and death is a natural process,
02:51a rhythm that has been repeated countless times throughout the history of the universe.
02:57While your consciousness clings to the idea of permanence,
03:00the reality is that impermanence is the true nature of existence.
03:06Before you were born, you experienced a state of non-being that lasted billions of years.
03:13This timeless void is a part of you,
03:16a place where you existed without consciousness or physical form.
03:20It is the same state you will return to after death.
03:24If you believe in an eternal soul or spirit,
03:27it follows logically that this spirit existed before your physical body
03:31and will continue to exist after.
03:35This continuity suggests that your fear of death is misplaced.
03:39You have already experienced non-existence,
03:42and it was neither painful nor frightening.
03:45It was simply a state of being that you cannot recall or comprehend.
03:49The thought of non-existence can be daunting,
03:52but it is important to recognize that you have already traversed this state.
03:57For billions of years, you existed in a form that is beyond human understanding,
04:02a form that predates your consciousness and physical presence.
04:06This past experience of non-existence should, in theory, reassure you about the future.
04:13Death is not a leap into the unknown, but a return to a familiar state.
04:18It is a state devoid of the worries, fears and pains that accompany conscious life.
04:24In this sense, death can be seen not as an end,
04:28but as a return to a peaceful, undisturbed existence.
04:33The idea that you have been dead before can be a comforting one.
04:37It means that death is not an unknown terror,
04:40but a return to a state you have already known.
04:44This nothingness, while beyond your understanding, is not something to fear.
04:50It is a state that does not require consciousness,
04:53and thus, to your current self, it feels like nothing.
04:59This nothing is not an absence, but a different mode of being,
05:03one that does not involve the self-awareness and emotions you associate with life.
05:09In many ways, this nothingness is a natural state.
05:13It is the state of the universe before you came into being,
05:17and it is the state to which you will return.
05:21This cycle of existence and non-existence is a fundamental part of the universe.
05:27Just as the seasons change and the tides ebb and flow,
05:31your life follows a natural progression from birth to death,
05:35and back to the creator from which you emerged.
05:38Coming to terms with your mortality is challenging.
05:41It requires you to face the reality of your finite existence,
05:45and the inevitability of your end.
05:48However, this confrontation is necessary for a full appreciation of life.
05:54By acknowledging your mortality, you can intensify your experience of living.
06:00This idea is echoed by many philosophers and writers, including Robert Greene,
06:06who suggests that an awareness of death enriches your life, making each moment more precious.
06:13The process of confronting your mortality involves a deep and honest reflection on the nature of life and death.
06:21It is a journey that requires courage and vulnerability, as you must face your deepest fears and insecurities.
06:28Yet, through this confrontation, you can gain a greater appreciation for the present moment.
06:36Knowing that your time is limited compels you to live more fully,
06:41to embrace the beauty and wonder of the world around you.
06:45It encourages you to cherish your relationships, to pursue your passions, and to find meaning in your experiences.
06:54In this way, the awareness of death becomes a powerful motivator for a richer, more fulfilling life.
07:01Ignoring the reality of death does not diminish its presence in your life.
07:06The fear of death can manifest as anxiety, stress, and a constant sense of unease.
07:12By not addressing this fear, you allow it to control you, dictating your actions and decisions.
07:19When you accept death as an integral part of life, you can begin to see it not as an end, but as a transition.
07:27This perspective shift allows you to appreciate the fleeting nature of your existence, and to make the most of the time you have.
07:35It frees you from the paralyzing fear that can prevent you from truly living.
07:41The inevitability of death should not be a source of despair, but a motivation to live fully.
07:48Our human experience is defined by its impermanence, and this impermanence is what gives life its value.
07:55Like a vacation that must eventually end, your life is precious because it is limited.
08:03If a vacation were endless, it would lose its charm and significance.
08:08Similarly, the finite nature of life makes each moment special and worth savouring.
08:16You are fortunate to have the opportunity to experience life.
08:20The fear of losing this ability should not overshadow the joy of living.
08:24Instead, you should strive to overcome this fear and embrace life with an open heart.
08:30You should fear not death itself, but the possibility of not truly living while you are alive.
08:36Appreciating life and death for what they are allows you to find peace and fulfilment in your existence.
08:43My friend, let your life not be paralyzed by the fear of death, but inspired by the gift of life, living each day with purpose and joy.
