00:00This is the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16 Plus, the 16 Pro, and the 16 Pro Max.
00:04So, every new iPhone, as well as a bucket load of new accessories.
00:09And this is where we find out if these things are actually good or not.
00:12So let's unbox the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus first.
00:15And notice, Apple did say this is now an even smaller package compared to last year's phones.
00:20I have to be honest, I can barely tell the difference.
00:22It's about 6% smaller in reality.
00:25But it does look like they have rearranged the entire inside to accommodate this shrink.
00:29So now you get the phone, there's a USB-C cable combined with a sim ejector,
00:33and it looks like no Apple stickers this time around.
00:36And here's our iPhone 16.
00:38These are also apparently the first iPhones to have 100% wood fiber-based packaging, which is good.
00:44Although last year's phones had 99%, so let's not get too excited.
00:49And this is iPhone 16 Plus.
00:52And I'm actually kind of happy about these colors.
00:54This is the closest we've been in a long time to, well, just actually proper blue and pink.
00:59Very expensive gender reveal, anyone?
01:02So having actually used the phones,
01:03I would genuinely say the audio mixing feature is unexpectedly crazy cool.
01:08So you guys start having a conversation now.
01:11And while they're talking behind the phone,
01:13I'm talking to you guys standing in front of the phone.
01:15So this is kind of like the equivalent of me being on a movie set,
01:18and I'm the cameraman and they're the actors that I'm filming.
01:22Let's see what that clip looked like.
01:23So open it up, head into the edit, and then click audio mix.
01:28So there's four options here.
01:29We'll start with the default way that the iPhone sounds.
01:32And while they're talking behind the phone,
01:33I'm talking to you guys standing in front of the phone.
01:36It's a bit of a mess, right?
01:38But then you click in frame.
01:40So you want 00 flour, so it's like really fine.
01:43And the eggs, you want really rich.
01:44My audio basically disappears.
01:46It's like a magic trick.
01:48There is more to this feature, but I'll get to it when we talk about the Pro phones.
01:51Okay, so what about gaming?
01:54Because the iPhone 16s have jumped forward two generations
01:56in terms of their chip this time around,
01:58this should be one of the biggest changes.
02:00And now also means that these phones have access
02:02to that same library of console games that only the pros could play last year.
02:07So why don't we see how they run?
02:09And the idea of playing like proper console Assassin's Creed on my phone
02:13is basically a childhood dream.
02:15Okay, really impressive draw distances,
02:18meaning that like it's kind of crazy that I can see stuff happening
02:21on the other side of this massive city.
02:24The game is running smooth.
02:25It's a very consistent 30 frames per second.
02:28I would say you can tell that a lot of settings
02:30have had to be very far dialed back from the console versions
02:33to the point where it does kind of still look like a mobile game.
02:37But then the upside is that it doesn't feel like a mobile game
02:40in terms of the scope of it.
02:41It's massive.
02:42I'm impressed.
02:43I'm not blown away, but I'm impressed.
02:46Now, two of the most obvious changes on the iPhone 16 are both camera related.
02:50One is the new layout of the cameras,
02:52which unlocks this new option in the camera app called spatial video.
02:55And I have played around with it.
02:56It's lower quality than normal video.
02:58It only shoots in 1080p.
03:00But if you do somehow happen to have a Vision Pro lying around,
03:04it is surprisingly transportative.
03:06It really does take you there.
03:07But then again, you know, this was the first time I used my Vision Pro
03:10since my review six months ago.
03:12This isn't a useful enough gadget for this feature
03:14that only works on this gadget to mean anything.
03:17But that might change in the future.
03:19The second thing is this new camera control that you get on the side.
03:22This is the thing that's in all the TikToks.
03:24This is what people are talking about.
03:26So a heavy press on it takes a photo.
03:28A light press activates the zoom slider.
03:30So you have full control over zoom by swiping along it.
03:32And then a double light press opens up a menu,
03:34which if you don't want the swipe gesture to control zoom,
03:37allows you to select something else that it can control.
03:39And when I first went hands on with it,
03:41my very first hot take was, why?
03:44Like, who asked for this?
03:45So now that I've had some proper time to get to know it,
03:48has my opinion changed?
03:49Well, it has allowed me to appreciate the attention to detail that's gone into it.
03:54I like the fact that it's flush with the body of the phone,
03:56so it's not yet another protrusion that makes the thing uncomfortable to hold.
03:59I like that you have a surprising amount of control over how the control works,
04:03with settings like how firm you need to press to activate the thing.
04:06I like the little bit of haptic feedback you get
04:08every time you hit a key magnification number as you're zooming in.
04:11It's quite cool that the official Apple cases cover and protect the camera control
04:15while keeping the swiping gestures completely usable.
04:18But no, my opinion has not changed.
04:21I think this is dumb.
04:22You have to lower your grip to reach it.
04:24You have to arch your thumb in a way that genuinely causes me hand strain.
04:27You've got to hold your phone tighter than usual
04:28because you're now supporting it less.
04:30And after all that, you're more likely to get last minute camera shake
04:33because you're heavy pressing a button as opposed to lightly tapping your screen.
04:37And if that wasn't enough, it also feels like
04:39in trying to make this camera control work
04:40for both the portrait orientations and the landscape orientations,
04:44they've just made it not good with either.
04:47Because for portrait, it needs to be higher up,
04:48so you're not going like this.
04:50And for landscape, it needs to be lower, like here,
04:52so you can actually reach it
04:53without using some weird unconventional hand claw.
04:56Separately though, I will say I appreciate
04:58how you can now pause a video recording
05:00so you can have multiple separate clips in one video
05:02as opposed to having multiple videos.
05:04And also how you don't need to stop
05:06whatever music is playing on your phone when you start recording.
05:08These are both overdue but good improvements for creators in iOS 18.
05:12But what about the photo quality?
05:14Because while the main camera hasn't changed on this 16,
05:17you know that new A18 chip that the phone has?
05:20Does contain a brand new image signal processor,
05:22which every year is becoming a bigger factor for your photos.
05:25So I thought this would be a fun thing to do.
05:27This is the iPhone 16.
05:28This is last year's iPhone 15.
05:30And then this is an iPhone 12,
05:31which I imagine is closer to what most of you might be upgrading from.
05:35Okay, I'm gonna jump in the shot and finger guns.
05:41Why did I say that?
05:43Right.
05:44Yeah, there's basically zero difference between the 15 and the 16.
05:47You can definitely see substantial upgrades from the 12
05:49in terms of detail, texture, color.
05:51That's not really something to brag about.
05:53That's expected.
05:54And between the 15 and 16, I can't see anything.
05:57The 16 though, can get way closer to things to take macro photos
06:00now that the ultra wide camera has autofocus.
06:03And there is some improvement to the colors
06:05and the overall smoothness when it comes to night photos.
06:07I guess because there's more processing in low light shots,
06:10you notice the difference in the processor more.
06:13Oh yeah, and the other thing,
06:14because the chip is faster this time around,
06:16these new iPhones can do way better quality quick tape video.
06:19You know, when you're in photo mode,
06:20but you just need to capture something right now,
06:22you can hold down the camera button.
06:24And iPhones used to take a squarish looking lower resolution video.
06:28That's what most phones do.
06:29Because when you're in photo mode,
06:31your phone is ready and geared to taking photos, not video.
06:34But the new phones can just go straight into full resolution 4K recording.
06:39But let's be very clear.
06:41If what you're after is big camera improvements, this ain't it.
06:44That's coming on the 16 Pros, which I'm getting to.
06:47The only other camera feature
06:48that Apple did spend a fair bit of time talking about is photographic styles.
06:52And how this year they're splitting these styles into mood,
06:54which are more the striking filter like settings,
06:57and then undertones,
06:58which are more about how you want to look in your photos.
07:01Traditionally, iPhones have always tended to make skin tones
07:04a little warmer than they are in reality.
07:06But the idea of these undertones
07:07is to give that control back to you to decide.
07:10That said, I've tested all of them.
07:12And all it did was make me come to the conclusion
07:14that I prefer the standard one
07:17that iPhones have been using by default since the beginning.
07:20Okay, only other thing that I wanted to mention
07:22before we go to the Pro iPhones is,
07:23at the launch event,
07:24Apple said that the glass on the front of these phones
07:26is 50% stronger than last gen.
07:28And that meant basically nothing to anyone
07:30because they didn't explain it.
07:31But I think I've managed to find out how now.
07:34So the problem with glass on its own
07:35is that the atoms within glass have a pretty weak structure.
07:38Their arrangement is disordered,
07:40which means that if you apply pressure to glass,
07:42the atoms can't smoothly glide over each other.
07:44So the material doesn't flex, it shatters.
07:47And so a few years ago,
07:48Apple realized that by infusing that glass
07:50with tiny clear pieces of ceramic,
07:51which has a much more organized 3D matrix of atoms,
07:55they could create more structure within the display
07:57and therefore more ability to withstand pressure.
08:00And so the new thing this time round
08:01is they've improved the organization of ceramic
08:04within the glass,
08:05which increases the compressive stress capacity
08:08of the display.
08:08Or in other words,
08:09this might not be significantly less likely to crack,
08:12but if it does crack,
08:13that crack is a lot less likely
08:15to spread out across the entire screen.
08:17So there you go.
08:18I had to make sure I got to the bottom of that one.
08:20And that's basically it for all the new stuff
08:22that the iPhone 16s do,
08:23except for the action button,
08:25which the pro phones had last year,
08:26a better battery and Apple intelligence.
08:29But I'm getting to that.
08:30Okay, time for the top end phones.
08:32iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.
08:35They used to do this cool thing
08:36where the base phones had white packaging
08:38and the pros came with black.
08:39But I guess that's officially buried now.
08:41Maybe the colored dyes were adding to the pollution.
08:44So this is the 16 Pro,
08:46which we have in the same natural titanium color
08:48as last year's phones came in.
08:50And then for the Pro Max,
08:51this is desert titanium,
08:52which is the only new color this year.
08:54I feel like Apple is really spacing out the innovation here.
08:59And honestly, to me,
09:00this feels disappointingly stale
09:02for the one flagship new color.
09:04But then while we're here,
09:05this is what the new cases look like.
09:07So it seems like fine woven cases are officially dead.
09:10That's probably for the best,
09:12but it's quite funny how much of a disaster that was.
09:14So we're back to silicon now.
09:15And this is, I mean, it's good quality,
09:17but it is expensive for a case.
09:19There's a new clear case,
09:20which I would personally never go for
09:22because they just get sticky and fingerprinty.
09:24And these are the new AirPods 4 with noise cancellation,
09:27which come with a set of papers for some reason.
09:30And then it's just the earphones in their case.
09:35And I have tested these by the way.
09:36So quick mini review, good product.
09:39They don't feel too big in your ears,
09:41so you completely forget they're there.
09:42They're super light,
09:43but then at the same time,
09:44they give like zero indication
09:46that they could fall out when you shake your head around.
09:48The noise cancellation is the best I've ever heard
09:50for earphones with no ear tips.
09:52And there's practically zero leakage either,
09:55even for people sitting right next to you.
09:57The sound quality isn't as good as the AirPod Pros.
10:00And I'd say that even though the noise cancellation
10:01does make them sound quite a bit better
10:03than the previous standard AirPods,
10:05you wouldn't have to look hard
10:06to find better sounding earphones for $180,
10:09but they sound a lot better
10:11than the previous gen standard AirPods,
10:13mostly thanks to the noise isolation.
10:15So I'm still gonna stick to the Pros,
10:16but I'm glad to see that there is now
10:18a decent Apple made option
10:20for people who don't like the feeling of pressure
10:22that you can get from ear tips.
10:24Okay, and then finally for this unboxing,
10:25this is the upgraded MagSafe charger.
10:27It is cool how every single product
10:29down to the accessories has the same peeling experience
10:32and that it always seems to work.
10:34And then the kind of chunky 30 watt power brick
10:37that lets you get the best speed
10:38out of that MagSafe charger.
10:39More on these in a bit.
10:41So first thing I wanna look at with these phones is audio.
10:44You know how we looked at the audio mixing feature
10:46on the base iPhones?
10:47Well, while the feature does completely work
10:49both on the non-pro and the Pros,
10:51it's even better on the Pros
10:52thanks to four supposedly studio grade microphones.
10:56And so I thought these phones
10:57would be a really cool way to show you
10:58this other type of audio mix called studio
11:01that makes the microphone sound
11:02like they're really close to your mouth.
11:04Check this out.
11:05So this is me talking to you using normal phone audio
11:07and it sounds phone-like.
11:09You hear a little bit of everything.
11:12This is what it sounds like when we switch over to studio.
11:14And as someone who spends a lot of time
11:16messing around with microphones,
11:17trying to get the best out of every scene,
11:20I find this absolutely mind blowing.
11:21It is crazy that this is recorded on a phone
11:24and nothing else.
11:25That said, you can have the coolest,
11:27most unique innovative feature in the world,
11:30but will I actually use this audio mix stuff?
11:32Probably not that often.
11:34It's nice to have the reassurance
11:35that at any time I want, I can
11:37because every iPhone 16 is recording
11:39spatial 360 audio by default anyway.
11:41So it's not like you're having to do
11:43or think about anything extra.
11:44But yeah, I am struggling to see the average user
11:46trawling through their entire library of videos,
11:48tweaking whose audio they want to prioritize in each clip.
11:52But different story entirely
11:53if you're buying the iPhone as your main filmmaking tool.
11:56For most of our videos,
11:58I still prefer the way that a Sony camera looks
12:00and the way that a Rode microphone sounds.
12:02But if you're looking at the iPhone 16 Pro
12:04to be your primary content creation device,
12:07then the audio on them just got very quickly, very good.
12:10But camera quality should actually
12:13be the biggest upgrade this year.
12:14So this is an iPhone 15 Pro Max.
12:16This is an iPhone 16 Pro Max.
12:17And that is a particularly challenging lighting environment.
12:20We are shooting against the sun.
12:23All right, hit me.
12:25And that looks basically the same.
12:27Although 16 Pro Max is actually slightly better
12:30at keeping the blue sky looking blue even through the trees.
12:34But the main benefit of the new phone over the old phone
12:36is not actually meant to be picture quality.
12:38It's meant to be the fact that the new phone
12:39has a faster sensor that can capture more information quickly.
12:43So can you take photos faster?
12:46Little known feature of the iPhones, by the way,
12:47if you tap and hold the shutter button
12:49and drag it to the left-hand side, you rapid fire.
12:52And nope, they have shot the exact same number of photos.
12:55I will say though, if you just mash that shutter button,
12:57then the new iPhone is definitely taking more shots
13:00and it's freezing up less.
13:01But no one does that.
13:03What actually would be useful to see though
13:05is if you just wanted to take
13:06one high resolution 48 megapixel photo,
13:09can the new phone take it faster?
13:11So I'm going to stand in front of these phones.
13:13I'm going to throw this ball in the air
13:14and we're going to capture at exactly the same time.
13:16So in theory, whichever phone's photo
13:18has the ball lower in the air has captured the photo faster.
13:22Three, two, one.
13:24Oh my God, you took these at the same time.
13:27Yeah, it's actually so quick.
13:28You don't even see the shutter.
13:29That's actually a much bigger difference than I was expecting.
13:32It looks like I've used AI to remove the ball
13:34on the first photo,
13:35but it's actually just disappeared out of the frame.
13:37Man, I swear, this is like the coolest thing I own.
13:41But the main tangible benefit to this faster sensor,
13:44according to Apple at least, is meant to be video.
13:46Where the iPhone 15 Pros can shoot a max of 4K video
13:49at 60 frames per second, the new phone can do 4K 120.
13:53But let's actually investigate that.
13:55So this is a water balloon.
13:56I'm actually pretty scared this is going to be explosive.
14:02Also, separate note,
14:03even though the screen on the new phone
14:05is meant to be just as bright as that of the old phone,
14:07we can't get it to the same level of brightness.
14:09It seems to be consistently slightly dimmer.
14:11But hey, at least as far as the video quality is concerned,
14:14it looks like there is basically zero compromise,
14:16even though we've doubled the frame rate from last year.
14:19I have seen 4K 120 on other phones before,
14:21but it has never looked this good.
14:24And the nice thing about this frame rate
14:25is you can slow that footage down four times
14:27and still get a smooth result.
14:29The previous 60 frames per second footage
14:31kind of falls apart here.
14:32All right, so what about how much storage space it takes up?
14:35So the clip is 1 minute 25 on both phones
14:37and the storage size is not quite double,
14:39but very nearly double.
14:41So 1 minute 25 is nearly a gigabyte.
14:43That means that the entire storage
14:46of the iPhone 16 Pro base model,
14:48so 128 gigs,
14:49will be taken up with less than three hours
14:51of footage on the camera.
14:53That is not good.
14:55Also, another thing that I thought was interesting was,
14:57let's say I take a video at 120 frames per second.
14:59I slow that down to 25% speed on my phone,
15:02but then I want to share that video with someone else.
15:04You get options.
15:06You can either share that video with no metadata,
15:08which means that the other person
15:09will just get the video as you intended it to be,
15:12or you send with everything,
15:13which means that they get all of this info
15:15associated with that file
15:17and they can reverse engineer it themselves.
15:19And same thing for photographic styles.
15:21You can take a photo in one style.
15:23You can decide later
15:23if you want to shift over to a different style.
15:25And then if you share it,
15:26the other person can also completely reverse
15:28any tone changes you've made
15:30or tweak it in a different direction,
15:32all without any loss to image quality
15:34because the details of the original image
15:36are baked into the data of the shot,
15:38even when it's edited.
15:39However, it's actually the ultrawide cameras
15:42that I'm most curious about.
15:43The new phone has a 48 megapixel ultrawide camera,
15:46which will still actually shoot 12 megapixel photos
15:49like the last phone by default.
15:50So what you need to do is to tap HEIF MAX here.
15:53And once you've done that once,
15:54you never need to do it again.
15:55It means that from now on,
15:56your phone will always shoot
15:58the highest resolution photo that it possibly can,
16:00depending on what zoom magnification you're using.
16:03Although it's not for free
16:04because everything is going to take up more storage space.
16:07And also, even though the main camera,
16:08as we've seen, has this faster sensor
16:10that can capture these high resolution photos quicker,
16:12the ultrawide does not.
16:13So that takes longer to capture in this mode.
16:15That said, if the quality is much better,
16:17then worthwhile trade-off.
16:18Let's see.
16:20Oh, yes.
16:21Actually, substantial detail upgrade.
16:24And actually, if you look at the fabric on my hoodie,
16:26you can see quite a bit less noise as well.
16:28Not to mention, it's managed to brighten
16:30my dark joggers a little bit.
16:31So the high dynamic range is better.
16:33It's actually just all around a vastly upgraded photo.
16:36And also, a more detailed ultrawide camera
16:38should also mean more detailed macro photos.
16:41Ah, okay.
16:42This is working a little different to how I expected.
16:44So I was expecting that
16:45because this is a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera,
16:47you would actually be able to take 48-megapixel macro photos.
16:50But when you're on the automatic macro mode of the phone
16:53and you take a shot,
16:54it's still actually only taking a 12-megapixel photo
16:56because the phone is actually cropping
16:58into that 48-megapixel sensor to get as close as possible.
17:01That said, because you're cropping in
17:03using a higher resolution base,
17:05the new phone's macros are still noticeably more detailed
17:08than the old phones.
17:09I also took a bunch of night photos
17:11to see if I could spot any trends.
17:12And there is definitely an improvement,
17:15but it's definitely not a massive improvement.
17:18Right, before we get to the real elephant in the room
17:20with this whole Apple intelligence shenanigan,
17:22let's talk charging.
17:23And by the way,
17:24if you want to have basically unlimited power on the go,
17:26then this MagSafe power bank from ESR,
17:29our sponsor, is kind of wild.
17:30It's got a 5,000 million power capacity.
17:32It can charge your phone with a wire,
17:34but it also supports the new Qi 2 wireless charging standard.
17:37And that means it will charge your phone
17:39about 30 minutes faster than other power banks like it.
17:41While being 38% slimmer
17:43and having a kickstand built into the thing.
17:46They also have this separate range of Cryo Boost chargers,
17:49which solve the biggest problem with wireless charging.
17:51It generates a ton of heat.
17:53And so every Cryo Boost charger has a cooling fan.
17:55Oh, I can actually feel the air coming out.
17:57A heat dissipation chamber,
17:58as well as AI wizardry to keep temperatures down
18:01and therefore wireless charging fast
18:02and your phone healthy in the long term.
18:04And this one charger can handle your watch,
18:06your AirPods and your phone at the same time.
18:08But yeah, I use ESR stuff on the daily
18:10because of how much you get for the money.
18:12So link below for the full lineup.
18:14So these new iPhones are kind of weird
18:16when it comes to charging.
18:17Like I said, the next gen industry standard
18:19for wireless charging is Qi 2,
18:21which allows phones to charge with 15 Watts of power.
18:24These phones can actually charge with up to 25 Watts
18:28if you splurged on the almost $100 combo
18:30of Apple's 25 Watt MagSafe charger and 30 Watt brick.
18:33You need a higher power brick
18:35because some power is lost when you're wireless charging.
18:37But then at the same time,
18:38Apple's wired charging speed is so slow
18:41compared to the competition
18:42that they are maybe the only company
18:44whose wireless charging is apparently the same speed
18:47as their wired charging.
18:48It feels like yet another indicator
18:49that Apple is really eyeing up the idea
18:51of a completely portless iPhone one day.
18:53Okay, so the final question that we need to answer
18:55is Apple intelligence, is it good?
18:58Does it save the iPhone 16s from becoming
19:00what would otherwise be a very minor update?
19:03Well, here's where I have a couple of bones to pick.
19:05Firstly, if you buy an iPhone 16 now,
19:07you will not get Apple intelligence straight out the box.
19:09It's coming in a software update later,
19:11although I've set up a beta so that I can show you now.
19:14And secondly, it's not exclusive to these phones,
19:16which isn't in itself a problem.
19:18It's good when more people can experience these features,
19:20but it just makes the launch event
19:21feel a little misleading
19:22because Apple spent half of the iPhone 16 section
19:26talking about Apple intelligence.
19:27But then the fact that almost everything
19:29also works on the iPhone 15 Pro
19:31means that those features have very little to do
19:34with iPhone 16 hardware.
19:35Anyways, here's my rapid fire thoughts
19:37having spent some time with Apple intelligence now.
19:39The summaries that it gives you to your emails
19:41are actually a really useful way
19:42to quickly catch up with the full context of a conversation.
19:45Cleanup is a really quick snappy way
19:47to remove distractions from photos,
19:49but I would actually say its results seem less good
19:51than they do on my Google Pixel.
19:52I really like the way that smart replies is integrated,
19:56but it only works for answering specific types of questions
19:58and doesn't exactly do it with much pizzazz.
20:00It's a little flat with how it responds.
20:02One of the key categories of features is writing tools.
20:04They're available system-wide.
20:06So whatever app you're in,
20:07if you highlight a bunch of text and tap writing tools,
20:09you get these options.
20:10And I don't really use any of these rewriting tools
20:13because I just, for me, tone is so important
20:15and something in my tone always seems to get lost
20:18whenever I try it.
20:19The key points and summary features though
20:20are really cool at distilling big chunks of text
20:23down to smaller bites.
20:24I just, I don't use them myself
20:25because I don't quite trust them.
20:28Like if I'm saying something on a video
20:29to potentially millions of people,
20:31I need to double, triple check
20:33that that information is right.
20:34Whereas getting my information
20:36through an AI's interpretation of a source,
20:38as opposed to the source itself,
20:39is like a fast track to something
20:41getting lost in communication.
20:42And that's basically all I can really test properly
20:44with the current beta.
20:45I've got high hopes for Siri
20:47once it gets chat GPT integration,
20:48but right now it's not doing much more
20:50than the Siri you're used to.
20:52So as for what I think to all of these new iPhones,
20:55even though it feels like we're on the precipice
20:57of transformative changes to the software,
21:00most of those things aren't here yet.
21:01And what was meant to be one of the biggest hardware changes,
21:03this camera control,
21:04is I think a bit of a stretch
21:07in both senses of the word.
21:09That said,
21:10while they're not the most exciting phones to upgrade to,
21:12if you're on like an iPhone 12
21:13and you've been holding out for the next thing,
21:15they are safe phones to upgrade to.
21:17They're fast.
21:18The base iPhone 16s have good screens
21:20and the pros have great screens this time.
21:22Although the base iPhones do still have
21:23that 60 Hertz refresh rate,
21:25which if you're used to having better,
21:26will make them feel laggy.
21:28But also battery improvements
21:29are always very appreciated over here.
21:31And the battery has been great on all of these new phones,
21:34but more on that in my battery test,
21:35which is hopefully going live in a couple of days.
21:38So see you there.
