The Seahorse Model Boat Club is one of the more active groups for enthusiasts of the maritime past time.

00:00I don't think there's a lot of individual boat clubs, this is probably one of the main

00:27ones but there is another, this one's based in Craighaven, there is another one at Piggy

00:33Park in Bangor and they meet most Sundays actually so it's very nice there and it's

00:40a smaller lake and you can retrieve your boats if they start to sink so Piggy Park's a great

00:47place for testing out boats that you've built and to find out whether they leak or not because

00:53I can tell you there's a few boats in this lake that are down at the bottom unfortunately.

01:05It's just something different, I like something different and one of the fellas he's retiring he

01:12says I have a bit of foam four foot square and six inches deep would you want it and I says oh

01:18yes so that's what it is, I've changed it in and I like it.

01:38I used to enjoy ordinary power boating but now that I'm in my 70s it's a bit much that now,

01:44water skiing and all that so I thought I'd just like to try and get into into the model boating

01:51and put my hand to building a boat or two and see how it works and I came across this club

01:58and do you know the main thing is the camaraderie, it's just amazing, there's probably

02:05about I don't know there might be maybe 20 or 30 members in this club and there's always sort of

02:12nine or ten people turn up each meeting and we just have a lot of fun and we help each other

02:18out with the technology of the boats as well so me as a learner I came along I had no idea

02:24what it was about, what motors to buy, how to connect up the batteries, how dangerous the

02:31batteries can be if you don't make sure you get the right ones and there's so many technical

02:36things in building boats and some of these guys have been engineers and they've had a lifetime

02:42of building boats and it's just brilliant being able to and everyone's so generous with giving

02:49their expertise but being so nice about it as well so it's great, it's a lot of fun.
