00:00first edition this week it was the starting point for a legendary character who's been a part of
00:05me tv for a long time to whom we pay tribute i said tribute not tribute is the very first
00:13appearance of the beloved rumpled reporter carl kolchak whose wayward career has led him to
00:18glittering las vegas where the serial murders of young women has suddenly become a major issue
00:25i'm really glad it's not sunday anyway a bizarre series of clues convinces kolchak that killer
00:31may be a vampire it's up to kolchak to reveal the truth in spite of bureaucratic cover-ups
00:37as kolchak contends with the original supernatural nemesis the night stalker
00:42he's some kind of stalker no he is the starting point for the saga of kolchak brings us to our
00:47first look at the characters of both our favorite reporter and his long-suffering editor-in-chief
00:52tony vincenzo and you notice a little less of the comedic back and forth that became a staple of
00:58their relationship but the basics are there yes indeed it will fill you in on the development of
01:04the character and subsequent sequel and series but now let's get to the movie which establishes
01:09from the very top the vision of kolchak narrating the events of his stories kolchak's career always
01:15be of a joke why is a good reporter like a dog uh i don't know because you hope they'll both
01:25stay on the papers what no paper
01:29wow
01:48he's recently if not who thinks he's contract even if he's been living to prove it
01:53do you believe in vampires little boy well do you not if i could help it well i believe it's
02:00about time that we finally have this movie to show you since many of you have been asking for it for
02:04a very long time yeah that's what i'm doing too it's been a big favorite since it first appeared
02:10on the abc network back in 1972 as a made-for-tv movie presented by dan curtis who brought us
02:18countless horrors like trilogy of terror and the spooky soap opera dark shadows it was written by
02:24the great richard matheson famous for i am legend duel and some twilight zone episodes who adapted
02:31the story from a novel by jeff rice now remember that name for later the word is that abc was
02:38actually surprised and even a little embarrassed when this movie broke ratings records becoming
02:44the most popular made-for-tv movie ever at that time that is just so cool and that brought about
02:49the sequel the night strangler and darren mcgavin liked his kolchak character so much
02:55he later formed his own production company to produce that beloved series kolchak the night
03:00stalker and remember that guy who wrote the original novel jeff rice yeah well he sued darren
03:06mcgavin then he never gave permission to turn his creation into a series i ain't saying nothing till
03:12i see my lawyer that's fine after one season of the series famous tv executive fred silverman took
03:18over abc and he supposedly canceled the series because he didn't like sci-fi shows oh well
03:25that's why there are so few episodes of the show but it's remained a favorite of legions of viewers
03:30including chris carter of the x-files who credited the series as a direct influence on x-files
03:36and in fact he actually had darren mcgavin on the show twice as agent arthur dales as one of the
03:42founders of the x-files investigators and not only that but i personally think that x-files
03:48adapted its famous motto from what kolchak believed in this film oh come on stand back folks here it
03:54comes the tooth is out there you are the death of live entertainment also dental work
04:01so how am i supposed to know if that's a gallbladder or not let's return to the very
04:07first supernatural case of carl kolchak's the night stalker and you'll notice kolchak does
04:13not drive his traditional yellow mustang that he had in the tv series and that he always does not
04:18wear the traditional seersucker suit that he wore in every show but you know how i know it's a
04:23seersucker suit no because he's the sucker that bought it at sears that's funny that's very funny
04:31it's very funny pretty
04:40yeah i know that fly got in here too i bet that had this thing well it wasn't a v personally
04:46i think bernie wants kolchak to stay away from him not just for the friendship's sake but to
04:51avoid having to beat his time with that waitress hey bernie watch out it's slippery next to the
04:58pool there you might never mind i don't know if you've ever gotten a major award i don't know
05:07back to the original night stalker with darren mcgavin as kolchak and he's having one of his
05:12legendary run-ins with managing editor tony vincenzo and you know i think some of their
05:17problems may come from tony not hearing very well what's that supposed to mean
05:23you know not hearing words quite right like when kolchak told him about a murder suspect
05:28who was a baseball umpire did i say it was a vampire or what does your suggested headline say
05:36well at least that answers one burning question who let the dogs out
05:42man enough with the singing already but not the barking i might as well let out the information
05:47on our cast so far kolchak of course is the great darren mcgavin star of stage screen and tv
05:54best known for his portrayal of kolchak and for his unforgettable role
05:57as ralphie's father in the beloved a christmas story
06:03well he was adept at comedy and drama as a drug pusher and frank sinatra's man with the golden
06:09arm substituting for dean martin with jerry lewis in the delicate delinquent he appeared in tv shows
06:15over a span of almost 60 years from alfred hitchcock presents to murphy brown and his
06:22friendly nemesis tony vincenzo is simon oakland famous for his roles as tough guys on both sides
06:28of the law in movies and tv he was a doctor in psycho a nasty police lieutenant in the original
06:35west side story was in twilight zone and steve mcqueen's bullet was in the elvis movie follow
06:41that dream and yes he was in perry mason
06:45we also have an actor who was sometimes confused with simon oakland claude akins who plays sheriff
06:55butcher he played another sheriff on tv sheriff lobo first appeared in classic movies like from
07:01here to eternity and the cane mutiny he appeared in tv shows as a military man and a cowboy
07:07was under makeup as aldo and planet of the apes and was on
07:15i don't even need to say it then his pal the district attorney is kent smith
07:20who was in both of the original 1940s cat people movies was in the fountainhead
07:26sounds like another mo insult hey fountainhead come here
07:31he did a lot of tv and stage work into the 1970s and he was even in billy jack goes to
07:36washington and yes he was on perry mason don't play it oh shoot take all the fun out of life
07:43never mind police chief masterson is charles mcgraw who gave kirk douglas problems in spotticus
07:49was the police officer trying to assist spencer tracy in it's a mad mad mad mad world was in
07:55hitchcock's the birds and was on our show in the mad ghoul and going from ghoul to gal
08:02kolchak's lady friend gail is carol linley whose first fame came as the coca-cola girl
08:08oh well that's the advertising business you know she played the mother in the thriller
08:17bunny lake is missing raised eyebrows playing gene harlow in harlow was among the passengers
08:23in the poseidon adventure and did many tv roles including the love boat through 2006
08:29now her role in this movie was changed by abc executives because as originally written she was
08:36um let us say an escort i wish i never met you you naughty devil kolchak's bureau pal bernie
08:43is ralph meeker who played tough guy private eye mike hammer in 1955's kiss me deadly kiss me you
08:51fool not now starred with jimmy stewart in the naked spur was in the dirty dozen and was bugs
08:57moran and roger corman's saint valentine's day massacre open up police actually they weren't
09:03really police they were yesterday and a very recognizable actor plays dr mccurgey it's none
09:09other than larry linville best known for playing dr frank burns on mash and he was also in earth
09:15girls are easy and was a doctor in the ever popular chad too but the chad shut up dude no
09:23that's not dude you're tuned it's chad don't worry it's not oat milk it's elmer's glue as we get back
09:31to carl kolchak and the night stalker keep your eye out for the car dealer you'll recognize him
09:37he's stanley adams who was the devious syrano jones who caused the trouble with tribbles on
09:42the original star trek and it looks like he's playing another similar role here a car salesman
09:48how would you describe him socially he fits in somewhere between a hooker and a bartender
09:54spiritually he stands beside galileo because he knows the world is round
10:00not that it does much good of course when his editor knows it's flat
10:06open it
10:09everything you always want to know about vampire
10:14and later when kolchak moved to chicago he took the same kind of photos
10:19when the police were pursuing jake and elwood blues surely this is not the laughing matter
10:23okay looks like kolchak ain't gonna get no paycheck from vincenzo anytime soon
10:28oh you could say that again spen he definitely reached a dead end in his investigation
10:35oh poor kochak i mean how could the boy not believe that there was a vampire running around
10:41you know i have seen weirder things in vegas oh really yeah like one time i was with frank
10:49dean munn and mr ed and we were all at the tropicana mr ed yeah and i got to tell you
10:56i don't know how they got that horse in the pool i don't even know horses can swim let alone float
11:02anyway this clown from circus circus comes waddling by and oh okay hold your horses
11:06gwen cooley i'm starting to think you're the weirdest thing that's ever been in vegas
11:12that's the nicest thing you have ever said to me okay well kolchak seems to be playing
11:24a losing hand at a high-stakes table no pun intended will he hit the jackpot or will the
11:30house take it all that about sums it up right sure so far but if i were a gambling ghoul i
11:38think we could sum it up a little bit better oh yeah you you want a bet yeah and with some
11:43vegas flair too hit it carwyn oh not him the music the music where'd this music come from
11:52don't worry about it just sing badly like you always do i don't sing that badly yeah the deaf
11:57people what there's a rumor down in vegas where the women are disappearing off the streets
12:05they're becoming dead meat take it away
12:08don't grab your crosses and some states and don't go walking around at night past three
12:14why because the sucker's hungry
12:18we'll call checks all the murders or suffer some mishap because when it comes to undead scums
12:25these poppers just don't give a well if you want to know what happened stick around with us at me tv
12:34movie and me so don't go anywhere we'll be right back with more of kolchak the night stalker
12:44anyway back to my story about vegas oh lord maybe some other time no really so the clown from
12:50circus circus he comes walking up and guess what he's wearing a toupee but not on his head he's
12:56wearing it as a bathing suit and well actually maria was more like a bikini a two-peeny if you
13:03will i'm ignoring you oh well come on wait i'm not even done with the story yet i haven't even
13:08gotten to the best part about wayne mountain and his pool floaties i thought we were going to stop
13:16and see leigh girls uh the vampires hoping to strike it big in vegas actually hoping to strike
13:22a vase as we return to the night stalker and uh you drunk no but kolchak might be look at him
13:30swerving
13:51oh is that what race car drivers call fish tailing tell that to the fish okay did you notice who that
13:57sign said was playing at caesar's palace paul anka and joey heatherton i'm guessing that they
14:04had a great audience yeah boy i'll tell you i'm used to tough houses yeah play cleveland
14:10no i didn't know and they were playing at caesar's but i'm sure you noticed who was playing in that
14:15casino kolchak pal crawford he's of course elijah cook jr who's been on our show before
14:21in house on haunted hill and blackula of course yeah and i did want to mention we did this movie
14:27on our show before maybe oh over 20 years ago and we did some of the scenes and spins around
14:33take a look colonel potter o'reilly was kissing margaret what the heck did he get horse hockey
14:41radar never touched hot lips or cold sore i don't like your tone of voice pierce an x-ray
14:45on the ipsley i only know that o'reilly was smeared with lipstick and it wasn't clinger
14:51i'd rather be kissing the hind end of colonel potter's horse than to touch lips with someone
14:55who'd be in contact with autonomous saliva you hate iris saliva you should lay off the
15:01donut pierce fat water rat and now here's jenny hey lady i can teach a nice doggy a trick come on
15:16could you do the same thing with my husband i need a snapling you're not dr pepper
15:26i'm going to blow chunks what the cheese shopper now what's this yeah jolt now for some mr pimp
15:34he's in the kitchen it's reserved for kids from seven up okay pop how about a pop and thought
15:41you could kill me huh listen squirt i'll crush you if i can't coax you to stop because i got a
15:47lot of pepsi go ahead feel his bicep it's like steel there's more vegas vampire violence on the
15:58way as we continue the night stalker uh don't tell our bosses here but i took all our prop budget
16:04money and bet it all on a horse that's a sure thing to win at the track are you kidding no
16:10you know where it came in in the big race
16:24watch out you great big wonderful big apple coal shacks coming back
16:27back what is he gonna run all the way to new york
16:38not in those shoes hey here's some interesting trivia when they were shooting parts of this
16:42movie in an actual vegas casino the actor playing the vampire who we'll talk about later thought it
16:49was funny that as he walked through in his full vampire makeup other than actors in the crowd
16:54reacting to him the regular casino patrons didn't seem to notice at all uh well i think security
17:01would notice if he's a count they don't like anybody who counts cards a little vegas in humor
17:09there uh listen i'm glad we have anita exorcist here with us once again she can join in on this
17:15i thought with a name like kolchak maybe this week we can do a polka
17:31things are fake in vegas where some murders aren't explained
17:35where bodies have remained and all their blood was drained
17:39that's the fact that kolchak they said caused them to expire the suspect they require is a vampire
17:54that's no recycled there might they become frightened when the killers then return
18:01got you but they won't ask major burns
18:17on him when they see his intentions it was bizarre by the ladies car
18:26really the dog to avoid munched but old red eyes hated as surprised
18:34made him the old bird and played dead
18:39brainy old scorsene he knew his blood bank raid was done can't stop him with a gun he hates the
18:46freaking run he just hits the blood bank when there's no victim too much he'll grab a liquid
18:53and finish with some punch
19:24so
19:32so
19:48it's a fact that kolchak knew the vampires last resort
19:52because some dipstick reports she's down a dozen
19:57losing my transfusion i'd avoid that as a rule rather than fight the school i would choose this
20:05we're gonna call the cops y'all don't leave us alone
20:14gee your hair smells terrific uh the night sucker continues now with some
20:17amazing consequences in store for kolchak speaking of amazing have you ever watched
20:22the amazing race oh yeah yeah it's always exciting when the contestants go running
20:27to be the first to get to a rental car have you ever seen that
20:43so
20:51does he really need a photo of the vampire supply of coffee grounds
20:56hey i don't think he's too worried about caffeine keeping him up all night
21:00certainly not probably not current but seeing that coffin reminded me of something we got
21:05from one of our viewers david zimmerman of dover new hampshire sent us a couple of
21:10stress coffin huh well see they're like stress balls and you can squeeze them to relieve your
21:15stress so they're stress coffins and if you get too stressed you might end up in one
21:23you know traveling a great way to get rid of stress and marshall buckholz from salem oregon
21:28put on his venture to go traveling this last fourth of july and took a picture with his south
21:34dakota joelle simpson why are you little ron simpson and he also appropriately on the fourth
21:40of july took a photo in front of mount rushmore he said that he thinks you would look great
21:45carved in stone but he wouldn't take it for granite funny that's exactly what scott b had
21:52in mind he sent us this rendering of a mount rushmore with not just me but when ghoulie
21:58nostalgia ferrato and ignatius malvolio frankenstein the imp
22:05i think i would rush more to get away from you for but as long as we have the whole group
22:09represented tina eggert of hoffman estates illinois made friendship bracelets for each
22:15of you characters i'm guessing it means you're friends with tina not with each other
22:22don't try to cause unrest between us kirwin just give it a rest and look at this we like to share
22:27some of the fan art we get from our viewers like milsa who watches us with mom and dad
22:32who colored some special pictures of both me who's this sure is ugly and of gwen ghoulie
22:43and candy sent some art done by her husband eric f myers of moments illinois a nice portrait of
22:48yours truly sven ghoulie you used to be somebody didn't you on tv i think i still am candy and
22:56eric are both lifelong spend fans this is our dear friend sofia bernardoni who made us some
23:01artwork out of these popular perler beads she created dracula i want you to go away now you
23:07frighten me and of course me as well oh no it's you it is great job sofia and look at this dan
23:17peckinpah wanted us to see this picture of kim peckinpah taken at brookfield zoo in illinois
23:22it's a special display that makes her look like she has antlers uh you think that's why dan calls
23:28her dear no you fathead and one more item luke stromberg's niece helen made this drawing of me
23:34as she was watching our show with her brother isaac while visiting with luke in pennsylvania
23:39pennsylvania does that mean she used a pencil no no no well you should use your computer ipad
23:45phone or whatever to check out our website spangoolie.com you'll find plenty of spin
23:50related fun there that's spangoolie.com and please hit the theme for us glory
24:00michael shannon believes the forest is with him is it lightsaber invisible
24:07we start with the part that says good night moon uh kolchak's about to have a frightening
24:12confrontation with the night stalker and we're about to see if he was raised right you know
24:17if he's properly educated a real gentleman
24:20always puts the lid down when he finishes his business
24:35so
24:45that looked impossible wrong oh sorry my mistake it wasn't an impossible cutlet
24:50it was a real steak that was pointless yeah well we can now reveal that this vegas vampire
24:56jano scorsese was played by barry atwater he's a character actor with a terrific career both in
25:02movies and tv you've seen him in the classic twilight zone episode the monsters are due on
25:08maple street he spent three years in the soap opera general hospital and you might have seen
25:13him play benedict arnold in an episode of voyage to the bottom of the sea well was he a turncoat
25:19to a tuna no you might well he may be best known for one other role besides this one in star trek
25:27series the father of vulcan philosophy the stories go that he couldn't do the vulcan salute so when
25:34he had to do it he dropped his hand below the camera frame and pushed his fingers against his
25:40body into the proper configuration that's gotta hurt one thing he found that he could do in this
25:45movie was go without contact lenses for a while as the vampire thing even red tinted lenses to
25:51wear but after a while those irritated his eyes so much he no longer needed lenses to make his
25:56eyes look red you got funny eyes oh and i saved this bit of information for last atwater made a
26:03whopping six appearances on eri pay asin may i didn't know credo spoke pig latin yeah i'll say
26:16i've heard of acupuncture but this is ridiculous the story of kolchak and the night stalker
26:21over yet we have the conclusion coming up right now oh and i just wanted to announce i've written
26:27a book about my career it'll be so worth reading it's also part cookbook with things like my recipe
26:33for rubber chicken cacciatore i just submitted it to some publishers today do you think you'll
26:40print it
26:54and why don't you just stop working night
27:01oh my god quick kisser
27:05why not oh baby you're gonna love new york city honey after the story
27:12hits the news services with my file i'm married
27:21don't look now baby but kolchak's coming back in style
27:30um
27:40do you like how they gave a sort of curtain call to the cast oh beautiful yeah of course
27:46carl kolchak came back for some encores starring in the sequel to this movie called the night
27:51strangler and in the short-lived tv series and very appropriately he made one final appearance
27:57after he passed on when abc did a remake of night stalker in 2005 darren mcgavin was digitally
28:04inserted into a shot in the newsroom with his image taken from an episode of the original show
28:10oh by the way the 2005 version of the show didn't even last as long as the original
28:16he got canceled after its sixth episode well show's over you can run along home now no not
28:22at all this isn't even the end of this show stay tuned for more and on that note we cue the music
28:28and the commercials i don't know the last time they cleaned that carpeting who you know i was
28:34just thinking with everybody on a health kick these days maybe they could remake this movie
28:40with kolchak as a dietician who goes to all-night grocery stores to find healthy foods they could
28:46the celery stalker
29:03this is pretty cool this is dick warlock and there is so much to this man's career
29:09the one thing i guess i gotta bring up first since we do a horror movie show is
29:13you were actually michael myers in halloween 2 right yes and and can you tell us how you got
29:21that part yeah i i worked uh on escape from new york thanks to kurt russell who i doubled for
29:28almost 25 years um i met john and deborah deborah hill and john cartner and after that movie ended
29:36deborah called me and she she asked me if i would uh agree to be the stunt coordinator on
29:41this little movie they were doing so i said sure i'm always looking for work so i went i met with
29:47her and she explained to me about the movie and and the mask and what have you she said have you
29:53ever seen did you see number one the first part i said no i haven't so she said i'll give you a
29:59video of it you can see well that video was part of how i developed the character watching that
30:06but i i had to meet the director okay i'll meet you where's he at well he's down the hall
30:13right down at the end of the hall of the doorway he's right there okay so i'm walking down the
30:18hallway and i passed two or three desks i mean empty offices and in the third one there was a
30:24desk and chair and this mask laying there that's the only thing to win there goes like fate i don't
30:31but i went in i picked up the mask and i put it on and i walked to his doorway
30:37and yeah when i stood there and looked at him
30:43he says who are you i just looked at him he said who the he double hockey sticks are you
30:52and i said oh and i took it off and i i said i'm dick warlock and i'm here to do the coordinating
30:58job for this movie and he said okay and we had our own meeting and and it worked well and and
31:05he said yeah you're fine hun and he said uh as i turned to walk walk away i had the mask in my hand
31:11i said is there any reason i can't play this part he looked me up and down he said i don't care if
31:17deborah doesn't care so i hustled out back down to deborah's office and said listen rick doesn't
31:23and you don't care and she said i don't care so i got the job it was that simple the right place
31:30at the right time with the right dialogue sure that that's really great you mentioned kurt russell
31:36i understand you were his official stunt double yes yes i met kurt in 1965 i think or six on
31:44computer war tennis shoes and previously i had uh done an opening to wonderful world of color
31:52with walt disney and it was called willy and yank who was willy willy yank kurt russell okay
31:59so i didn't really meet him it's a computer but then his dad got me in his contract and when they
32:05hired him they were obligated to call me and would i come in do i want to come in so yeah that lasted
32:12about 25 years up to up to tango and cash his name was bing russell i think bing yeah yeah bing
32:19owned a baseball team i did a triple air something and kurt was going to be a ball player and he did
32:25something to his shoulder he was a second baseman he had a good rbi average and so you know very
32:32handy guy anything any stunt i ever did for kurt he could have done it better but he was gracious
32:37enough to say well should i do it or you want to do it you know it's that kind of thing so so we
32:44worked together on it we were a good team is that terrific and you spent so many years as a stuntman
32:49tell us just some of the movies you've done that in oh gosh somebody told me back to 1960 with a
32:56movie with marty robbins at the country singer that was my first movie and that was the introduction
33:02to get me in the screen actors field and and i've done a lot of tv episode you know episodic
33:09and uh different movies it's hard for me imdb has it all and it's better to go there to check
33:17that than you know it's raw dick warlock.com there's a lot of stuff on that one through my
33:22website yeah the one thing i did here and tell me if this is true you were the stunt double for
33:29helen hayes helen hayes and michelle lee if you remember in in that was his first love bug i got
33:37michelle lee in that show but yeah i've done that what what was the stunt you had to do with

40:04could be cold cuts now cut that out well he would do that oh or maybe he could be a small town banker
40:12whose bank building is foreclosed on so he tries to set up a savings and loan
40:16in a former meat locker so instead of cold check it'd be cold cash
