Why Does my Dog Seem to be Choking?

Spasm is common in dogs and can happen to any breed and randomly. It can be caused by different reasons, such as simple irritation, allergies, infections and even a change in temperature.

A dog may appear to be choking for a variety of reasons, such as:

Choking
When the animal inhales food, liquids or objects that block the trachea, which may be partially or completely. This can happen with toys, bones, food, water or other objects that the dog ingests quickly.

Reverse sneeze
It is a natural way for the animal to get rid of something that bothers it. It can last from seconds to 2 minutes. To help the animal, you can lightly massage the throat, cover the nostrils or encourage swallowing.

Panting
It could be a sign of respiratory problems, such as pneumonia, bronchitis or asthma. It could also be a sign of a cardiovascular problem, stress or nervousness.

Heat Strokes
When the dog is too hot, it can go into respiratory collapse. Other symptoms of hyperthermia are: excessive salivation, apathy, staggering gait, mental confusion and tachycardia.
