00:00The New York Police Department has released body cam footage of a controversial police
00:04shooting at a Brooklyn subway station earlier this month. Officers shot four people during
00:08the altercation, sparking protests against the police's use of force. According to the New York
00:13Times, the September 15th incident began with 37-year-old Darrell Mickles jumping the turnstile
00:18without paying at the Sutter Avenue L Stop in Brooklyn. Officers there forced him to leave.
00:23Surveillance video shows that he was holding a knife during his exit,
00:26though it's unclear when police became aware of this.
00:29Several minutes later, Mickles re-entered the station through the emergency exit,
00:33and officers followed. The officers confronted Mickles on the platform.
00:48The officers eventually attempted to tase Mickles.
00:57It was at this point that the officers fired nine shots, hitting Mickles,
01:13two bystanders, and one of the officers themselves, Edmund Mays. According to Gothamist,
01:18Mickles was hospitalized and has been charged with attempted assault, criminal possession of
01:21a weapon, and fair evasion. One of the bystanders, Gregory Delpesh, was struck in the head and
01:26remained in critical condition as of Friday. Officer Mays and the other bystander are
01:30reportedly in stable condition. The video footage has not resolved the controversy over the incident.
01:36According to CNN, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said Wednesday,
01:40this incident was not about fair evasion. This incident was about a person in mental
01:44stress armed with a deadly weapon and protecting our cops and citizens on that train.
01:48But CNN also quoted a Legal Aid Society statement saying that the video did not
01:52capture the entire NYPD melee, and arguing that Mr. Mickles was standing
01:57still when NYPD personnel unloaded their firearms at him.
