A young American girl on her way to visit friends in rural England is brutally attacked and raped. After spending the next few months in a mental institution trying to recover from her ordeal, she is released into the care of her friends. The police assure her that they have the man responsible in custody, and she begins to rest easy. That is until she sees her attacker wandering the streets of the town. After planning her revenge she follows the man and kills him. This, she thinks, is the end of her ordeal. That is until the man she thinks she has killed arrives at the house she is staying in.—Kevin Steinhauer

00:00:30Think
00:00:38Seems to take forever doesn't it? It's not exactly the Orient Express. Oh, you're American
00:00:45Tourist no, I work here
00:00:47at the Emerson
00:00:49It's nothing grand or diplomatic. I'm just a stenographer, but it's fun being in England. Yes, it's a funny old place
00:00:56But we like it
00:01:01Where are you going now? Then spend the weekend with some friends. It's all good. That's the station just beyond mine
00:01:08Have you been there before? No, they've just moved in. It's a pretty little village. Do you like it?
00:01:17Your friends are meeting you
00:01:19Yes
00:01:21That's good
00:01:23I only live half a minute from the station, but my husband's meeting me
00:01:27After all one never knows does one
00:01:30And they haven't caught him yet
00:01:32There's a bit about it in today's paper

00:01:38Rape?
00:01:40Three girls have been assaulted on this line in this many months
00:01:44One nearly killed
00:01:47That's why I hate that
00:01:50So if you're being paid
00:01:52There's nothing to worry about
00:01:54So if you're being paid
00:01:56There's nothing to worry about
00:01:58Rape?
00:01:59They'll catch him sooner or later
00:02:03They've got a description at last you see
00:02:07They're looking for a man with short blonde hair
00:02:10I know he's not much
00:02:12But the police are so clever
00:02:16Nonetheless
00:02:18I insist on being met
00:02:21Although I suppose if it happened to me at my age
00:02:25I could take it as a compliment
00:02:31Ah
00:02:33That's my stock
00:02:35It's been nice talking to you my dear
00:02:39I hope you enjoy your weekend

00:06:58Your friends called me
00:07:00What?
00:07:02Mr. and Mrs. Holland
00:07:04They were on their way back to town
00:07:06Their car broke down
00:07:08So there'll be delays
00:07:10And they want you to go on and let yourself in
00:07:12Oh
00:07:14The keys under the mat
00:07:15This'll pay for, miss
00:07:18Turn right, out to the station, and it's the first house you see, about a quarter of a mile.
00:07:26Is everything all right, miss?
00:07:28Oh, yes, thank you.
00:07:48Just a minute. Can I have your ticket, please?
00:10:18Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh
00:10:48She'll be furious. Absolutely furious.
00:10:55What have you meant?
00:11:01Well, you see...
00:11:02It wasn't our fault. We didn't do it on purpose. It wasn't anybody's fault.
00:11:06It's your car. Men are supposed to look after their cars. Make sure they don't break down.
00:11:12Poor Nicola. We were supposed to meet her at nine and now, look at it, it's tomorrow.
00:11:20She probably made herself some supper and went quietly to bed.
00:11:23Yes, well, I had to sit by the roadside and freeze all night.
00:11:26Just who were you worried about, Nicola or yourself?
00:11:29Both of us, of course.
00:11:33We both of us had an absolutely beastly night.
00:11:38All because of your wretched car.
00:11:41But you love me.
00:11:44Maybe.
00:12:11Come on.
00:12:41Jeff!
00:12:49Jeff!
00:12:50Nicky! Nicky! Nicky! Nicky!
00:13:20Nicky!
00:13:40Surely just one minute.
00:13:42I'm sorry, Inspector, the answer must be no.
00:13:50Half a minute. No.
00:13:52Look, you're doing your job, Doctor, I'm just trying to do mine.
00:13:55She saw the man, she must have.
00:13:58Now, maybe she can give us an accurate description.
00:14:00Not now, please.
00:14:01Look, just a minute, Doctor.
00:14:06If we don't catch him, he'll do it again.
00:14:08Potential victims are your concern, mine is that girl.
00:14:11I'll be back tomorrow, then.
00:14:12Inspector, don't rely on anything. You do understand it's her mind which is so badly affected.
00:14:17The state she's in now, she may never make sense.
00:14:19I'll be back tomorrow.
00:14:40Oh, man, take the man away.
00:14:43Oh, please, take him away.
00:14:48No.
00:14:49Sister.
00:14:52Male stuff.
00:14:53Mother.
00:14:54Tell me the truth.
00:14:55Mother, take him away. Take the bad man away.
00:15:00Mother!
00:15:18Hello?
00:15:20Yes.
00:15:22I see.
00:15:24Oh, thank you for ringing.
00:15:28It's the hospital.
00:15:30No change.
00:15:33Miss Stephens?
00:15:36Miss Stephens?
00:15:41Look, I just want to find the man.
00:15:43Look, I just want to find the man.
00:15:49I want to find that bad man you've been talking about.
00:15:56And you are going to help me find him, aren't you?
00:16:01Miss Stephens, you don't have to be frightened of me. I'm a police officer.
00:16:08See?
00:16:13See?
00:16:39You haven't found it yet?
00:16:40No.
00:16:41The axe?
00:16:42Nor him.
00:16:43Fine, though.
00:16:44Hmm?
00:16:45I thought we would have found it.
00:16:46Well, judging from her injuries, he didn't use the axe on her.
00:16:50I sort of assumed she took it to defend herself.
00:16:52Well, if she did, it didn't do much good.
00:16:55No.
00:16:58Probably put his prints on it during the struggle.
00:17:01He did...
00:17:02Well, what he did,
00:17:04ran out through here,
00:17:07remembered the axe,
00:17:09and came back for it.
00:17:10How do you know that?
00:17:11Well, I don't, just guessing.
00:17:12But there was mud on this carpet.
00:17:15I wonder why he didn't kill her.
00:17:19Well, he might as well have.
00:17:21They've taken her to Corby Hall.
00:17:22I know.
00:17:23But she's not mad, is she?
00:17:25Not very disturbed.
00:17:27I wonder after what happened to her.
00:17:29But as a woman, you must understand that.
00:17:31I think of poor Nicky in a place like that.
00:17:33No, darling, it isn't a place like that.
00:17:36No, Mrs. Holt.
00:17:37Corby Hall is the best in the country.
00:17:39The most expensive.
00:17:40The Americans are showing their customary generosity.
00:17:42The embassy is paying all the bills.
00:17:44Yes, but poor Nicky...
00:17:45They'll make her well again, Mrs. Holt.
00:17:47Well enough, I hope, to ever talk to me.
00:17:50And then, I'll nail him.
00:18:05I understand she has no family.
00:18:07None to speak of.
00:18:08A couple of distant aunts, it must be.
00:18:10I think we're the nearest thing to a family she has.
00:18:12I do visit her often.
00:18:13It's important she does not feel lonely, isolated...
00:18:16Yes, of course we will.
00:18:19Come every weekend.
00:18:20Can I go and talk to her?
00:18:21Yes, but only bright things, please.
00:18:28Not you, Mr. Holt.
00:18:31If you don't mind.
00:18:33For the time being, it's best she has any female contact.
00:18:39Dr. Ward.
00:18:46How long is this going to take?
00:18:48Progress is slow, but over the next few months, I hope she may...
00:18:52Few months?
00:18:53I'd say six, at least.
00:18:55But then she will be completely well again.
00:18:57Well, the experience she's been through, there must be scars,
00:19:00corpses, bruises.
00:19:02She'll be fine.
00:19:05Let me in.
00:19:06Detective Constable Wallace, sir.
00:19:08Oh, good.
00:19:09Need your help.
00:19:11A bit dangerous.
00:19:13Not that dangerous.
00:19:14Not if these reports aren't here or anything to cover.
00:19:24I'm sorry, sir.
00:19:25It's all right.
00:19:26It's all right.
00:19:27It's all right.
00:19:28It's all right.
00:19:29It's all right.
00:19:30It's all right.
00:19:31It's all right.
00:19:33It's all right.
00:19:39Well, now, Constable Wallace,
00:19:42what I want from you is...
00:19:46Why don't you sit down?
00:19:48I'm very pleased with you, Nicola.
00:19:50Very pleased, indeed.
00:19:52You see, a cure is a two-way process.
00:19:55We can lead, offer, direct.
00:19:59But ultimately, it must come from you.
00:20:02The need to be cured must be of your own volition and there is no doubt that you are meeting us more than halfway.
00:20:07You are doing very well.
00:20:12But perhaps the most important factor of all is time.
00:20:17Time to forget.
00:20:19Time to readjust.
00:20:22I'm sure it's going to be good news.
00:20:24Don't build any hopes.
00:20:26I said be prepared for a surprise.
00:20:27I know but don't build any...
00:20:28Don't build any hopes.
00:20:30I know, you've already said that about half a dozen times.
00:20:33You're beginning to sound like a needle stuck in a groove.
00:20:35That doesn't outdate you.
00:20:37But then I always do go for the elder woman.
00:20:40I'm sure we're going to see a great change in Nicky.
00:20:54She nearly ran me off my feet.
00:20:56Nicola's making commendable progress.
00:20:58I said we'd ask her out for dinner.
00:21:00Oh.
00:21:02I think that would be a splendid idea.
00:21:04Why don't you tell her, Mr. Holt?
00:21:06Me?
00:21:07I told you she was making commendable progress.
00:21:13Doctor, when can she leave?
00:21:15Jeff and I want to take her home with us.
00:21:16A sort of convalescence.
00:21:17When can it be?
00:21:18Not yet.
00:21:19But it's been nearly four months.
00:21:21I'll tell you when, Mrs. Holt.
00:21:23You mustn't feel responsible, you know.
00:21:27I thought you'd been home that night.
00:21:29It wasn't really your fault.
00:21:31But I do feel responsible.
00:21:36And I want her out of here.
00:21:38Back home with us.
00:21:40She's not ready yet.
00:21:42You only see her during the day, Mrs. Holt.
00:21:45We see her at night.
00:21:57Ah!
00:21:59Ah!
00:22:26Ah!
00:22:57Ah!
00:23:11Ah!
00:23:27Inspector.
00:23:29Wow.
00:23:33Oh, wow.
00:23:35You've been tangling with our Miss Wallace, have you?
00:23:37Well, she's taller than me.
00:23:39More pre-possessive.
00:23:41Prettier.
00:23:43But me, I'm much nastier.
00:23:45I'm sorry, Inspector. I think it's out of the question.
00:23:47But, Dr. Ward, I have the man.
00:23:49I've got him.
00:23:51Now, obviously, he denies everything.
00:23:53But if Miss Stevens were to make a positive identification...
00:23:56The most terrifying thing that can happen to a woman
00:23:58has happened to her.
00:24:02And we have spent nearly six long months
00:24:04trying to eradicate it from her mind
00:24:06so that she can forget it
00:24:08and begin again.
00:24:10And now you want to make her remember.
00:24:14I can't stop you.
00:24:16I can't forbid you.
00:24:18But the responsibility
00:24:20will be yours.
00:24:22The mind is tough, Inspector.
00:24:26It is resilient,
00:24:28but it is also extremely delicate.
00:24:30Like everything else, it will take so much.
00:24:32And then it snaps.
00:24:34The responsibility must be yours.
00:24:42Well, I'll have to see what I can do without her.
00:24:46After all, he was arrested
00:24:48attempting an assault on my enemy.
00:24:51Thank you, Inspector.
00:24:53Doctor.
00:25:09Get me, Mrs. Holt.
00:25:21How do you feel?
00:25:23About to go stark staring mad.
00:25:25You have asked me that at least a dozen times.
00:25:27I'm sorry.
00:25:29I'm concerned about you, that's all.
00:25:31Well, you don't have to be.
00:25:33I'm fine.
00:25:35I'm just fine.
00:25:37I absolutely promise.
00:25:39We're nearly there.
00:25:41Jess Meeting is at the station
00:25:43and he's threatened to cook dinner
00:25:45so that means we'll probably have to eat out.
00:25:47Would it worry you?
00:25:49I mean, being suddenly pushed amongst people again.
00:25:51But it wasn't people that put me away, Verona.
00:25:53Just one man.
00:25:55No, you don't have to worry about him.
00:25:57You've caught him.
00:25:59Caught him?
00:26:01Forget it.
00:26:03But you said...
00:26:05My big mouth as usual.
00:26:07Dr. Ward said you weren't to be reminded of it.
00:26:09Well, why not? It happened.
00:26:11It happened to me.
00:26:13So they've caught him.
00:26:16But it might not even be the man.
00:26:18And if it is, all he'll get
00:26:20is a few years behind bars.
00:26:22That's British justice for you.
00:26:24American too, I suppose.
00:26:26No.
00:26:28In some states you might still get the gas chamber
00:26:30or the electric chair.
00:26:32Look, Mickey, I think Dr. Ward was right.
00:26:34Let's forget it, eh?
00:26:41Why don't you and Jeff have a baby?
00:26:43You're married, you're in love.
00:26:46It's the perfect way.
00:26:48We'll be planning to eventually.
00:26:50Well, don't wait.
00:26:52I mean, don't leave it till it's too late.
00:26:54No.
00:26:56We're there.
00:27:08Are you OK?
00:27:16Jeff!
00:27:20Jeff!
00:27:22Mickey!
00:27:24You look great.
00:27:26Doesn't she?
00:27:28Off we go.
00:27:32Everything all right, sir?
00:27:34Everything is beautiful, madam.
00:27:36A treat awaits you.
00:27:46Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:27:48Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:27:50Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:27:52Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:27:54Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:27:56Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:27:58Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:28:00Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:28:02Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:28:04Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:28:06Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:28:08Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:28:10Shh, shh, shh.
00:28:12Shh, shh, shh.
00:28:14Shh, shh.
00:28:40Oh, you've redecorated.
00:28:42We were going to anyway. Anyway.
00:28:44Oh, this was Dr. Ward's idea, wasn't it?
00:28:47Yes. Now, Ward said we were perfectly honest, answer all questions with total honesty,
00:28:52so yes, it was his idea. And we were going to do it anyway.
00:28:55You see, we got up on a cleft stick.
00:28:57It was a fine idea for you to be coming to stay with us, but a bad idea for you to be...
00:29:02To come back to where it happened.
00:29:04Well, I think it's an improvement.
00:29:06I mean, your colours are so much brighter.
00:29:09And your rearrangement of furniture.
00:29:13It's all so much better.
00:29:15Well, you get some drinks ready, darling. I have spaghetti bolognese to attend to.
00:29:19Oh, God!
00:29:23Oh, wasn't that just about the best bolognese you ever tasted?
00:29:26It was the best today, I can promise you that.
00:29:31I denied here. I thought I might take a few days off, drive you round a bit, buy you lunch.
00:29:35Oh, and there's a race meeting over in Porton. Would you like to go?
00:29:38I certainly would. It would give me an excuse for buying a new hat.
00:29:42I'm sure Nicky would enjoy it.
00:29:44Yeah, of course she would.
00:29:46And if the weather's fine, we can bring a picnic lunch.
00:29:48One condition. That I prepare the food.
00:29:51I don't think they've caught him.
00:29:53He's too clever.
00:29:55Nicky, of course they've caught him.
00:29:57It was in the papers.
00:29:58No.
00:29:59I promise you, they've caught him.
00:30:02Well, they can't have.
00:30:04Because I've just seen him.
00:30:07On the train. He was on the train.
00:30:22Hello, Charles here.
00:30:24No, yes, Mr. Holt.
00:30:26What?
00:30:29Yes, I see.
00:30:31The other right-of-way.
00:30:34I saw him. As clear as I'm seeing you now. The same man.
00:30:38But you didn't mention him to Mrs. Holt here.
00:30:40In fact, you didn't mention it at all.
00:30:42Well, too much, much later.
00:30:44I was confused. I wasn't sure.
00:30:46Ah. You weren't sure.
00:30:49Yes.
00:30:50But, well, Jeff and Werner have been so kind to me, and I didn't want to make a fuss.
00:30:55Well, this was the man who attacked you, Miss Stevens.
00:30:57I didn't want to make a fuss.
00:31:00More a mistake?
00:31:02I will look into it. You can be sure of that.
00:31:08Inspector.
00:31:10Do you think she made a mistake?
00:31:12Well, perhaps not a mistake exactly.
00:31:15Mrs. Holt, the man who attacked those women, who attacked Miss Stevens, is in my office now.
00:31:20He's been formally charged.
00:31:22Well, then surely...
00:31:23He's made a full confession.
00:31:24He's admitted to attacking Nicky.
00:31:25Well, funnily enough, no, he denies that.
00:31:27But the other women, yes. He's made a confession, and I'm satisfied.
00:31:29But Nicky...
00:31:30Mrs. Holt, before I came here, I telephoned Dr. Ward.
00:31:33What?
00:31:34Miss Stevens is better, much better.
00:31:38She's still not completely herself.
00:31:40Delusion. Disturbed.
00:31:43It's to be expected.
00:31:44But you seem so sure.
00:31:46I'm sorry, I can't act against her.
00:31:48I can't get any credence to what you may say.
00:31:50That's part of the reason I don't intend calling her at the trial.
00:31:53Part of me'd like to, but the other part says,
00:31:55Beware! Hold on! She could lose you the whole case.
00:31:58The testimony of a woman who's disturbed...
00:32:00Nicky's not mad.
00:32:02That's technically no, but a good defence counsel would tear her to shreds.
00:32:06Look, you take it from me.
00:32:08The man who attacked her is safely under lock and key.
00:32:11Good night, Mrs. Holt.
00:32:13Sir.
00:32:14Good night, Inspector. Thank you for coming.
00:32:25
00:32:56
00:33:13Nicky, darling, it's all right.
00:33:19It's all right.
00:33:22
00:33:45Well, it was a great day, wasn't it?
00:33:47And I tell you something, I'm glad we didn't back any winners.
00:33:49Anybody can back winners.
00:33:51It takes real skill to back a card full of losers.
00:33:53Hey, that's a talent we certainly have.
00:33:55Oh, well, I think we got valuable money.
00:33:57We had a hundred of hooves, the sunshine, the excitement.
00:34:00And quite a nice picnic.
00:34:02Which I prepared.
00:34:04Oh, which you prepared. And for which I forgot to kiss you.
00:34:09
00:34:12
00:34:19
00:34:33You've no idea what triggered the attack?
00:34:35I know she has nightmares at night, but this was during the day?
00:34:40Yes. Yes.
00:34:42Well, make sure she has her sedation
00:34:45and let me know if it happens again.
00:34:47Special measures?
00:34:49No, Mrs Holt.
00:34:51Just continue to treat her gently
00:34:53and humour her little whims where necessary.
00:34:58Yes, we will.
00:35:00Thank you, Doctor.
00:35:02Goodbye.
00:35:04He said to humour her.
00:35:06I'm sorry. I ruined a wonderful day.
00:35:09Oh, don't be silly.
00:35:12Would you like a drink?
00:35:15Nicky, have you any idea why?
00:35:17It was just something I imagined.
00:35:19And what did you imagine?
00:35:21You know, I think I will have that drink now.
00:35:24And please, can we drop it? I mean, it's not fair.
00:35:27You've been so kind and all I do is spread gloom and alarm.
00:35:30Don't be foolish. It's why you're here, so that we can look after you.
00:35:33We want you to lean on us.
00:35:35Thank you. You're the two nicest people I ever met.
00:35:37I'd like a toast to that.
00:35:39Geoff and Verna.
00:35:41Cheers.
00:35:43Fresh eggs daily.
00:35:45Pardon?
00:35:47Where's Sturford? Is it near here?
00:35:49It's about ten miles, I think.
00:35:51There's nothing much there. A couple of farms, that's all. Why?
00:35:54I don't know. I saw the name somewhere and I wondered.
00:35:57Do you think I could ask a special favour?
00:36:00Of course. Whatever.
00:36:02Well, I want to start trying to be independent again.
00:36:05And tomorrow I thought I'd go out on my own and face the world for a while.
00:36:08That's a good idea.
00:36:10I do need to be able to retreat quickly, be encased in my own little world.
00:36:14So I wondered if I might borrow your car.
00:36:24It's yours anytime.
00:37:10Shoo, shoo, shoo.
00:37:40Shoo, shoo, shoo.
00:37:46Shoo, shoo, shoo.
00:37:55We're only guests a few years behind bars. That's British justice for you.
00:38:02No. In some states you might still get the gas chamber.
00:38:06Or the electric chair.
00:38:10Shoo, shoo, shoo.
00:38:40Shoo, shoo, shoo.
00:38:59It's nothing. It's the tiniest dent.
00:39:02I feel so stupid, my first drive and in someone else's car.
00:39:05Nicola, darling, it's so minor, I'm not going to bother with a paint job.
00:39:09It's a pretty sturdy car, you know.
00:39:11I think I'd nearly crash it into a brick wall and hardly scratch it.
00:39:15Apart from that, how was the rest of the day?
00:39:17Oh, very good. I got something out of my system.
00:39:19You take it again tomorrow.
00:39:21No. I won't need it anymore.
00:39:25I think I'll go to bed.
00:39:27I hope you sleep well.
00:39:29Oh, I shall. I shall now.
00:39:32Night.
00:39:40I'll do that.
00:39:42It's nearly finished.
00:39:44Well, something. Wash the dishes, scrub out the kitchen, something.
00:39:47You're a ball of energy this morning.
00:39:49Yes, well, I want to be useful.
00:39:51Oh, you may be sorry you said that.
00:39:53I'd just made up my mind that I must do something about the back garden.
00:39:56It's a massive muddle. We've hardly touched it since we've been here.
00:39:59So if you'd like to grab hold of a shovel...
00:40:01No. I think I prefer something a little more domestic.
00:40:04I know. I know.
00:40:06I think I prefer something a little more domestic.
00:40:08I know. Let me fix tonight's dinner. I'd like that.
00:40:10All right.
00:40:12Whatever you say.
00:40:18That was some meal.
00:40:20Darling, you excelled yourself.
00:40:22I think you've been spying on me and picking up hints.
00:40:24All the credit goes to Nicky.
00:40:26She cooked dinner.
00:40:28Oh.
00:40:30I don't think my wife will mind.
00:40:32Mmm.
00:40:35You really are sitting up and taking notice again, aren't you?
00:40:38Mmm. Since yesterday.
00:40:40I don't know what it is, but it's as though some great burden's been lifted from you.
00:40:44You could say that.
00:40:46Well, whatever it is, my stomach's had the benefit. It was a marvellous meal.
00:40:48It's not finished yet, the dessert.
00:40:50No, no, I'll get it. You sit down.
00:40:52You've done enough running around after me already, both of you.
00:40:56You should be proud of both of us.
00:40:58We've both been working like pack horses all day.
00:41:01Nicky in the kitchen and me in the garden.
00:41:04Now, the garden is a man's work.
00:41:06You leave that to me.
00:41:08I'll get round to it.
00:41:10Someday. That's right.
00:41:12Oh, anyway, it wasn't all that difficult.
00:41:14Some of it had been dug up already.
00:41:18I'll get it.
00:41:31I'll get it.
00:41:49It's in.
00:41:59Can I help you?
00:42:01Yes, I hope so. My car has gone for good.
00:42:03I wondered if I might use your telephone.
00:42:05Yes, of course. Come in.
00:42:17You look as though you've seen a ghost.
00:42:19Oh, this is Nicky. Nicky Stephens.
00:42:21Hello.
00:42:22She hasn't been well, but she's all right now.
00:42:24You make a phone call and then come in and have a drink.
00:42:26Yes, thank you.
00:42:33It's good Samaritan time.
00:42:35A chap whose car's broken down, using the phone.
00:42:37Hello.
00:42:39Oh, that looks delicious.
00:42:41You're not going to deny it's a taste, are you?
00:42:44No, of course she isn't.
00:42:46I think you deserve the honour of serving it, Nicky.
00:43:06The garage is sending a letter out.
00:43:08Oh, that's all right. Would you like a glass of wine?
00:43:11Oh, yes, thank you.
00:43:13Oh, this is my wife, Verna.
00:43:15Nicola, you've met.
00:43:17I'm sorry for bursting in on you like this.
00:43:19We know all about defecting motorcars.
00:43:21Sit down, would you?
00:43:25There, if you don't mind. My leg's a bit...
00:43:27Oh, of course.
00:43:29How did you get that?
00:43:31Skiing?
00:43:32No, nothing so exciting.
00:43:34It was just an accident.
00:43:37Stupid accident.
00:43:39Here you go.
00:43:41Do you live near here?
00:43:43Not so far away.
00:43:45If I know anything about the garages in this area,
00:43:47you might as well prepare yourself for a long wait.
00:43:50Do you mind if I turn?
00:43:52No, of course not.
00:44:06Anything else on this hit-and-run at Sturfordshire?
00:44:09Not a thing.
00:44:11Nasty.
00:44:12Life's nasty.
00:44:14Well, you'll feel better, sir, once you've got a Scotch inside you.
00:44:16You bet.
00:44:18Oh, by the way, sir.
00:44:20There was a telephone call for you.
00:44:22Who from?
00:44:23Hamburg, Germany.
00:44:25By the what?
00:44:26An interpreter.
00:44:28But what I could make out, there's someone coming to see you.
00:44:31Don't know when or why.
00:44:37I hope you get home all right.
00:44:40Drop in any time you're passing. You're always welcome.
00:44:42That's very kind of you.
00:44:44Yes, I will.
00:44:49Good night.
00:44:50Good night.
00:44:53Very pleasant, dear.
00:44:55Yes.
00:45:02She didn't say a word the whole time.
00:45:04She seemed absolutely terrified of him.
00:45:06That's understandable.
00:45:08She is a man.
00:45:11Sure am I.
00:45:34Oh, I'm glad you rang, sir.
00:45:36Good morning, sir.
00:45:37Yes, I know, sir.
00:45:39I just got back from the cold.
00:45:41Well, I agree.
00:45:43Five years isn't much after what he put those girls through.
00:45:47Yeah, I wish now I'd got the Stevens girl to testify.
00:45:51Stevens, eh?
00:45:53Nick... Nicholas Stevens.
00:45:55Yeah.
00:45:56The American girl.
00:45:57Well, if she'd appeared to the prosecution,
00:45:59it might have been a different story.
00:46:02Still, that's modern justice.
00:46:06Yeah, sir.
00:46:08Yeah.
00:46:09Yeah, good.
00:46:11Yeah, good.
00:46:13Bye, sir.
00:46:17Well, I think you did a darn good job.
00:46:19You up there?
00:46:20Thank you, sir.
00:46:21Better go and get your coffee now.
00:46:23Thank you, sir. I will.
00:46:28He's here, sir.
00:46:29Oh, is he?
00:46:30A chap from Germany.
00:46:33Private?
00:46:34Well, private can wait.
00:46:36Yes, sir.
00:46:40You sure you're going to be all right?
00:46:42Of course. I'm not a child.
00:46:44Yes, I know I've been behaving like one,
00:46:46but I can take care of myself better than you know.
00:46:49It's lunch. We're invited to not dinner.
00:46:51Just making sure that Nicky's going to be OK.
00:46:53Of course he'll be OK, won't you?
00:46:55We should be back by about seven.
00:46:57Not unless we go now.
00:46:58You know where you are if you want to, sir.
00:47:00Darling, you are behaving like a mother hen.
00:47:02Nicola has assured us she doesn't mind.
00:47:04You mustn't ruin her confidence.
00:47:06All right. See you soon, darling.
00:47:08Come on.
00:47:09I'm coming.
00:47:10The number's on the table if you want to see.
00:47:12Yes, I know. Now go on.
00:47:13Bye.
00:47:14Have fun.
00:47:30Bye.
00:47:31Bye.
00:48:00Bye.
00:48:01Bye.
00:48:30Inspector's busy, sir.
00:48:56Hey, sir.
00:48:59Sir.
00:49:01The inspector is still very busy, sir.
00:49:04It is only because I am a private detective.
00:49:08I am used to it.
00:49:11A certain indignation.
00:49:14Usually I allow an hour for such,
00:49:18but I have now been waiting two.
00:49:21Well, I am busy.
00:49:23I can see that.
00:49:38I'll just sit here
00:49:45so that you don't forget me.
00:49:51Don't let me disturb you.
00:50:21All right.
00:50:48Now, Mr...
00:50:50This is merely a courtesy visit
00:50:54because I wish to make some inquiries in this area,
00:50:58and I do not wish to tread on your official toes.
00:51:02Inquiry?
00:51:03I am trying to find a man,
00:51:06a German citizen who came to this country
00:51:08more than six months ago and has not been seen since.
00:51:11Oh, but not official inquiries.
00:51:13Please, you wouldn't.
00:51:15The purpose of his visit took him to London,
00:51:17and it is there where the inquiries are concentrated.
00:51:20Why come here?
00:51:21Because he once met a girl on holiday,
00:51:24and she lives here in Salford.
00:51:27Simple, then? Do I ask her?
00:51:29Not so simple.
00:51:30All I know is her name is Sarah,
00:51:32and she lives in Salford.
00:51:34I don't think he knew any more than that,
00:51:37but it is possible that he saw Salford being a small town.
00:51:43Break his journey, ask around, find her.
00:51:47Exactly.
00:51:50What do you want from me?
00:51:52Your official blessing.
00:51:55The opportunity to sniff around, ask a few questions.
00:52:00Who is this man?
00:52:01He will stand out like a sore thumb.
00:52:04Good appearance, well set up.
00:52:14I always need to thaw out afterwards.
00:52:17There's a pub across the way.
00:52:19I'll stand your scotch.
00:52:20Thank you, Inspector,
00:52:21but I think I should pursue my inquiries with all possible speed.
00:52:24Makes a change.
00:52:25Most of the private fellows I know
00:52:26are always keen to stretch the case out,
00:52:28pushing up the expenses.
00:52:29Yes, but I have a small vested interest.
00:52:31Oh?
00:52:32Yes, very small, about that high.
00:52:34Blonde, she lives in Munich.
00:52:36I see.
00:53:14Hello.
00:53:20Well, they were so kind to me the other evening, I thought...
00:53:25Oh, I rang the bell.
00:53:27Several times, but...
00:53:31Sorry if I frightened you.
00:53:33I'm not frightened.
00:53:39Oh, the leg is better now.
00:53:41It wasn't as bad as I thought.
00:53:43Stupid accident.
00:53:46You are frightened.
00:53:49Oh, I see.
00:53:51They're out.
00:53:53I mean, Mr and Mrs Holt, they're out,
00:53:55and you're all on your own.
00:53:57No.
00:53:58They're in the garden.
00:54:03I didn't see them.
00:54:04Yes, they're there, behind the shed.
00:54:06They are there.
00:54:32Well, you must be mistaken.
00:54:34Certainly not.
00:54:42No!
00:55:05Excuse me.
00:55:06I wonder if you ever remember seeing this man.
00:55:10It would be a remarkable feat of memory if you did.
00:55:13More than six months ago.
00:55:15Last February, possibly alighting from a London train.
00:55:20Sorry.
00:55:21Pleased to study it again.
00:55:23A man alone.
00:55:25He may have seemed uncertain.
00:55:27Lost?
00:55:29Yes.
00:55:30Chap with a ticket.
00:55:32What chap?
00:55:34At first.
00:55:35I thought he was trying to get past me without a ticket.
00:55:39And then you discovered he just did not understand you.
00:55:42That's right.
00:55:44How did you know that?
00:55:46When one puts two and two together,
00:55:48it's easy to see the difference.
00:55:50I see.
00:55:51I see.
00:55:52I see.
00:55:53I see.
00:55:54I see.
00:55:55I see.
00:55:56I see.
00:55:57When one puts two and two together, my friend,
00:56:00it inevitably makes four.
00:56:27Oh, no.
00:56:57Oh, no.
00:57:27Ah!
00:57:58Ah!
00:58:17Ah!
00:58:20Ah!
00:58:27Oh.
00:58:28Mickey!
00:58:29It's Jeff!
00:58:30Mickey!
00:58:31It's Jeff!
00:58:32It's Jeff!
00:58:33It's Jeff!

00:58:39It's Jeff!
00:58:40It's Jeff!
00:58:41It's Jeff!
00:58:42It's Jeff!
00:58:43It's Jeff!
00:58:44It's Jeff!
00:58:45It's Jeff!
00:58:46It's Jeff!
00:58:47It's Jeff!
00:58:48It's Jeff!
00:58:49It's Jeff!
00:58:50It's Jeff!
00:58:51It's Jeff!
00:58:52It's Jeff!
00:58:53It's Jeff!
00:58:54It's Jeff!
00:58:55It's Jeff!
00:58:56It's Jeff!
00:58:57It's Jeff!
00:58:58It's Jeff!
00:58:59It's Jeff!
00:59:00It's Jeff!
00:59:01It's Jeff!
00:59:02It's Jeff!
00:59:03It's Jeff!
00:59:04It's Jeff!
00:59:05It's Jeff!
00:59:06It's Jeff!
00:59:07It's Jeff!
00:59:08It's Jeff!

00:59:46Oh no!
00:59:54No, she didn't mean it!
00:59:57We didn't mean...
00:59:59You've been drinking too much. I wouldn't let him drive.
01:00:02She didn't mean it. You'd better get the police.
01:00:05No. No. My wife is right.
01:00:07She must have been surprised. I must have startled her.
01:00:11I'll be all right.
01:00:23He's dead.
01:00:26He's dead at last.
01:00:29He's dead.
01:00:47I don't know whose car broke down.
01:00:52Do you know this man?
01:00:55Very slightly.
01:00:57He used the phone the other evening when his car broke.

01:01:46The police.
01:01:52Two men attacked, two dead.
01:01:55Well, at least the chap we arrested was the right man.
01:01:58But she didn't even see him.
01:02:00She's always a newspaper report about a fair-haired man.
01:02:03And along came my man, a foreigner, trying to find his way.
01:02:06He just happened to have fair hair.
01:02:09He just happened to fit her fantasies.
01:02:12A fantasy. A terrible delusion.
01:02:16After the imagined assault,
01:02:18she began to see the man she imagined had attacked her in every man.
01:02:22To see his face in every face.
01:02:24But why?
01:02:26An imagined assault.
01:02:28Fear.
01:02:29Of what?
01:02:31Some childhood incident.
01:02:33A half-forgotten experience.
01:02:36Imagination.
01:02:39The human brain can torture and torment itself to destruction.
01:02:44I doubt we shall ever know.
