Mary Bonnet's Emotional Journey: Pregnancy, Miscarriage & Teen Motherhood in Selling Sunshine Memoir

Today, we're diving into the emotional and deeply personal journey of Selling Sunset star, Mary Bonnet, as she opens up in her new memoir, Selling Sunshine. From her hopes of starting a family with husband Romain Bonnet to the heartache of loss, Mary’s story is one of resilience, vulnerability, and strength. Let's explore the raw moments she shares with us.
After a belated honeymoon in Bali in 2022, Mary had a 'strong hunch' she was pregnant. As she reveals in Selling Sunshine, her suspicion grew when she realized her period was late. Excited, she shared the news with the Selling Sunset production team, as they already knew she and Romain were trying to conceive. But what happened next may surprise you.
Mary was asked to delay taking the pregnancy test until the cameras could capture the moment. While eager to know, she recalls her frustration—'You’re going to delay us finding out whether or not we’re having a baby?!' she writes. Despite her feelings, Mary waited until the crew arrived the next day. It was then, surrounded by cameras, that she learned she was pregnant.
Her reaction was pure joy—until, as Mary admits, she became hyper-aware of the cameras rolling. The intimate moment made it into the season 7 premiere of Selling Sunset, but it wasn’t long before her happiness turned to heartbreak.
Nine weeks later, Mary and Romain faced the unimaginable—they learned of their miscarriage during an ultrasound appointment. They were originally set to film a scene sharing the ultrasound pictures with fans, but in her memoir, Mary recalls how Romain immediately called producers and said, 'You are not coming. We need to grieve alone.
Despite the pain, the producers asked to film their emotions 'fresh,' offering to keep the crew small with just Mary’s close friend, Amanza, by her side. With incredible strength, Mary and Romain agreed to film a scene that made it into episode six of the season. Mary described it as one of the hardest moments of her life, with Romain doing all he could to shield her from more pain.
Mary’s journey doesn’t just focus on her recent struggles. In Selling Sunshine, she also revisits her teen years, sharing her experience of becoming a mother at just 15 years old. Her son, Austin, now 27, was a pillar of strength for her as she navigated teen motherhood and beyond.
Writing Selling Sunshine was an emotional process for Mary, often requiring her to revisit deeply painful memories. 'I had to talk to my therapist quite a bit to make sure I was handling it okay,' she tells PEOPLE.
Mary’s story is a powerful reminder of the challenges life can bring, but also of the strength it takes to share those challenges openly.
