03:33and when it did it really gave Skiravi the sort of chance he thrives on the goalkeeper was left standing
03:45very good cross and really Skiravi with his height advantage is going to dominate especially
03:49if Berantes when you see it come across here from Moravcic it really is headed just outside the six
03:55yard box which i think most defenders would like to feel their goalkeeper would come for those
04:00especially as it was a hanging cross and really the Czechs got the initiative and and really that
04:06is their way to go now to put those teasing crosses in and leave it to Skiravi to make
04:10and tell his height advantage there he is his third goal of the tournament it is he also scored
04:15at Wembley in that friendly didn't he I think he scored with a header in the first half against
04:18England unless I'm mistaken and that was a similar sort of goal really he got the better of the
04:23defender in the air and it's given Czechoslovakia the sort of platform they would want in this match
04:28against the underdogs 12 minutes gone now here's Nafliček I think what Dr. Vengos has done tonight

08:52to be ahead there has been enough in this first half one or two chances for Costa Rica to feel
08:57could get back into this well I think that's a very nice summing up actually um you've done the
09:02job there for me it's a one nil at halftime it's a fairly sedate pace as you said for much of the
09:06game but Czechoslovakia knowing a thing or two perhaps too much at times for the Central Americans
09:12lead with that early goal by Thomas Skouravi with the header another one was disallowed and the
09:17goalkeeper for Czechoslovakia and indeed for Costa Rica they made a couple of useful saves between
09:22them halftime then in Bari Czechoslovakia won Costa Rica nil well very sad isn't it uh I think
09:29everyone in the squad felt uh when the touch heater August Stringfellow flew out it was a
09:35sort of last resort uh and then once that didn't seem to work Brian Robson isn't the best of
09:40watchers and uh you know there's always that feeling will he or won't he play and I think now
09:45the other members of the squad know the situation and Brian Robson goes back to try and sort out
09:50the problem but you have to feel very very sorry for him as you say 86 and 1990 here we are missing

17:12but he's seen headers go in don't we and that occasion Lupe had a good header across the goal
17:18and really a brave header by Skoravi because there was a foot flying down diving header into
17:24the corner Costa Rica perhaps just getting a little bit carried away with the good spell that
17:28they were having and they tried to play with a few tricks out of defense lost possession
17:32Noblychek got to the byline got the crossing and suddenly find themselves 2-1 down and back on the
17:38hills again yes perhaps they were just being shade overconfident there but here's Kayaso
17:43that's the way they play and it's 2-1 now but who says they can't come back again Montero
17:53but it'll be a huge wave of relief in the minds of the Czech players because they were
17:58going through a dodgy period to some sugar nets to take the corner
18:09Hasek was hoping to get onto it at the near post there's Moravchik
18:14and breaking for Costa Rica their goal scorer Gonzalez and he's put Jara away and Hernan
18:19Medford is waiting in the center here being joined by two others now and that's number 19

18:33no wonder they didn't want to take him off it's a really good break by Costa Rica one of their
18:37better crosses as well he just couldn't get his head to it so Troy had the scissors kick but
18:42it was at such a tight angle almost impossible to get it on target but
18:46there he is racing up always running away from him and lunged at it the seven as Hasek picks
18:53himself up and he's the man standing closest to the ball Kubik is just to his right who
18:58can curl him with his left foot it's direct
19:10well it was the left foot curler and it's gone in
19:15and Kubik did exactly that three-one to Czechoslovakia Baranti's beaten and I suspect
19:22Costa Rica might be too it's a perfectly placed free kick just underneath the crossbar from Lubos
19:28Kubik who we saw a score from one at Wembley in the friendly well there's another one and that
19:34has made it 3-1 and Czechoslovakia for the first time in the in this evening's match really can
19:42feel reasonably comfortable with about 14 minutes to go just is probably done there as I say the
19:50disallowed goal got the free kick and you won't see a better example of how to whip the ball over
19:54the wall at pace right into the top corner at the angle of the goal no blame at all to
20:00Baranti's and the superb free kick
20:06and now it's a burst by Nofliček
20:10and Costa Rica find themselves 3-1 behind and well it will be a miracle if they come back from that
20:17this is Caillas so there was a moment a couple of minutes earlier you know how the World Cup
20:20matches sometimes hinge on one incident when Costa Rica were breaking clear and outnumbering
20:24Czechoslovakia and the pass went astray and what could have so easily been 2-2 became 3-1 instead

21:16shakes his head there I think he felt he should have got that on target Hasek
21:20there coming across just got in his way he checked at the last minute I'm sure that put
21:39and that's Nofliček and this is Skiravi looking for his hat trick
21:43the shot was on and it was well blocked by Roger Flores the number three
21:47threw himself down in front of Skiravi and the ball span off his foot for a corner
21:52Skiravi would be delighted to become the second player to score a hat trick
22:00but there the outstretched foot of the defender denied him the third goal
22:04and Shovinets has gone across to take the corner Hasek's in the six yard box and the two taller
22:10players waiting to come in behind him and there is Skiravi he did it this time he's got the hat trick

22:29a good personal performance by him and they haven't been able to cope with him in the air
22:33Joseph Shovinets curled the corner in with his left foot and Skiravi again a lovely header
22:39banged it down didn't he having beaten I think it was Gonzalez who was marking him the number four
22:44but he put that where the goalkeeper and the other defender couldn't go
22:50well he's always dominated in that penalty area gain a good downward header and uh well a hat
22:55trick of headers for him of course now he edges away from the rest of the field five goals ahead
23:02of Michelle who knows he might still be looking for his fourth but good finishing and as I say
23:12they look good going forward just feel at the back of my mind defensively they are going to
23:17concede goals against quality teams but it's Costa Rica looking for one back here with Kayaso

23:25I believe Gary Lineker when he uh oh onside no he's not he was so slow with the flag it was
23:33unbelievable I was just thinking did Gary Lineker get six in Mexico when he was the top scorer in
23:38the last world cup if he did I think that total might well be surpassed this time that man was
23:42Skiravi hat trick of headers something of a rarity and what it's done is to give Czechoslovakia a
23:54passage into the quarterfinals winners by four goals to one thanks for the three from Skiravi
24:03and the curling free kick from Kubik they have picked up three more bookings which won't please
24:07them if they make further progress in the tournament and Costa Rica whose goal came
24:13from Gonzalez the 19 year old after 55 minutes he too had been booked earlier they've nothing but
24:19uh good things to look back on here in their first ever appearance in the world cup finals
24:25they surprised lots of people maybe even themselves their adventure is over now with a final score in
24:30Bari with Czechoslovakia running out winners by four goals to one so Czechoslovakia go into the
24:41last eight there Skiravi becomes the leading goal scorer in this world cup with five and they will
24:46now play West Germany or Holland and of course Cameroon got through you saw that earlier and
24:53they'll now face England or Belgium now I've got to repeat the news that we broke at half time on
24:59this program it's unhappy news for England it's that Brian Robson will get a plane back to England
25:04tomorrow he's played his last match in the world cup Brian Robson comes back and I've got a note
25:09here it's just been handed to me it says he's coming home to consult a specialist he may need
25:13surgery so there we are now we've had some reflections on that already so let's go through
25:18one or two of the main points of that match uh Hattrick nice to see in in indeed Hattrick of
25:25headers yeah um and really showing that for all the refinement of football in the middle of the
25:30field in this game the end it was the power in the air that broke the deadlock by Skiravi and got
25:37him in front very tall man and of course that is the danger with the developing countries that they
25:43can't defend their own goal area against high crosses here's the Costa Rican goal ray yes a
25:49super cross in and a lovely moment for Gonzalo he's only 19 years of age and that's a super
25:54head it had to be because the the goalkeepers had a super tournament a stage school of Czechoslovakia
26:00but that really is a very very nice header you could be playing with him next season from what
26:04we hear but uh not if he's going to let him in like that here's the top scorer again Jim
26:12yes that's right the right I mean ends up bobbling around in the in the Costa Rican
26:17penalty area here they got a round of applause for that actually from the crowd and it led to
26:21their undoing because it's 1-1 at this stage and look that's right again uh that's Knopflichek on
26:27the ball gets in a cross a good defensive header away but this is a very good header back across
26:34the goal to Skiravi who really does look a British style centre forward yeah and that's a very very
26:40brave header he nearly loses his front teeth actually with this one he's only 24 years of
26:45age I suspect there'll be a few offers from one or two English clubs maybe for him right I don't
26:49know fancy tricks in your own penalty area don't pay off obviously but this fancy trick did by
26:54Kubik that's such a sweet left foot and although we have players in England who can do it I reckon
27:01if they were on a competition through a morning of five pounds for every one that was scored the
27:06English player would end up broke at the end of the morning all right here's the hat trick yeah
27:11this is the the hat trick of headers for Skiravi another superb cross and it's got to be said that
27:17when you you get a ball delivered in like that um the fellow only needs to touch it with his head
27:22and there it is wallop well the Czechs are looking pretty useful aren't they I mean they've scored a
27:28few goals hither and thither and uh it looks as well they've got to face either Germany or Holland
27:33sleeping dogs we said yeah not showing too much before the competition and just producing it the
27:39right time yeah Ray you think that they can uh progress I think going forward they look very
27:44good there's but I defensively they give me a few jitters defensively I wouldn't fancy them
27:49defensively fancy the Germans to beat them but they've got to beat Holland yet it's they have
27:53it's going to be a really tough game it's all getting very tricky and what about us what about
27:56us I mustn't say us I've had my wrist slapped about this before because of the Scots and the
28:00Irish and all the rest of it um what about England to if we get if they get past Belgium
28:05to face Cameroon that's right um the Cameroons are naive defensively but they work so hard for
28:11each other the Cameroon side um but it's a great draw for us if we can beat Belgium then
28:16you know we we couldn't have dreamt of a better draw really okay uh we've got a cracking match
28:21for you tomorrow afternoon Argentina against Belgium of course the reigning world champions
28:27against the current champions of South America
28:33this is what we expect from Brazil pure skill
28:40in the first phase though it seemed to be left on the training ground as the Brazilians struggle
28:44to impress a narrow one nil win over little Costa Rica typical of their inability to turn
28:50lovely touches into hatfuls of goals Diego Maradona is the most skillful player in the world
28:59but even he couldn't prevent Argentina losing to Cameroon in their opening match his moments
29:04of genius were few and far between and when they came more often than not his teammates
29:08couldn't complete things qualification was only secured in the last game against Romania
29:19when a 1-1 draw gave them third place and a tie against their old rivals
29:28the two countries have met on three previous occasions in the world cup but this time there's
29:31added spice both Maradona and Brazil star striker Correca play their football side by side for
29:37Italian champions Napoli where they have an almost telepathic understanding it'll
29:42be fascinating to see who comes out on top tomorrow
29:49Correca has already shown what he can do when Brazil do click scoring twice against Sweden
29:58and Correca is on side and will score brilliantly done brilliantly done
30:04oh how to finish his touches in the penalty area have been brilliant all he's lacked is a bit more
30:14luck in front of goal he hasn't been helped by changing partners up front
30:20Romario started against Scotland and the two combined well here
30:28but it was substitute Muller who scored the winning goal and put the Scots out
30:34matches between the two countries are always hard-fought affairs eight years ago in Spain
30:49when Brazil beat the world champions 3-1 a young Diego Maradona was sent off for this bad foul
31:05this time it's been Maradona on the end of some brutal challenges that have restricted his
31:09contribution to the team mind you he's never been one to undervalue a foul against him
31:19manager Carlos Bilardo will be worried about his star's rough treatment
31:23and will be hoping for some protection against the Brazilians
31:27but more concerning has been Diego's lack of goals his most noticeable achievement so far
31:32has been to make that hand invisible to the officials once again but of course not to the
31:36viewing millions at times he seemed to be playing on his own only Claudio Canigia
31:42has shown any sort of understanding with him though neither has scored
31:50Canigia has been a revelation so far with his pace and strength and may help to draw
31:54defenders away from his captain he's also got three defenders sent off so Brazil beware
32:02but if Argentina are to avoid a repeat of 1982 and keep a grip on their title as world champions
32:07it's Maradona who must shine no longer on the flanks down the sidelines
32:11but in the penalty area where it matters Argentina need more goals otherwise they'll
32:17be out and it might be Correca rather than Maradona who returns to Naples as king
