00:00A rare sight on the streets of Cape Town.
00:05Yeah, this car behind you.
00:07A group of girls cycling through Kailitsha township.
00:10Ahead of the peloton.
00:12Hi, my name is Cindy Lemavunda and I'm the bicycle mayor of Cape Town.
00:16He got this title for promoting the culture of cycling in the South African city.
00:21He teaches first-time riders how to ride a bike, including young girls in impoverished communities.
00:27The goal is to set up a majority of girls in the township.
00:34They are not given much sport options.
00:38And we've always seen that bicycle has the potential of changing lives.
00:42Hence we started Culture Cycling Academy.
00:44It's very rare to see girls cycling, so I saw an opportunity of a lifetime.
00:51Girls cycling here in Kailitsha is one of the best things.
00:56We're encouraging more girls to do cycling.
01:00But learning to ride a bike is not always as easy as it seems.
01:05And that is not the only challenge.
01:07You got it, you got it, you got it.
01:09People started to look at a bicycle as a very affordable mode of transportation,
01:14despite the safety, despite the lack of safe infrastructure that is connected.
01:18But you started to see that there's a need where people really want to get off their vehicles
01:24and actually jump on a bicycle and cycle to work.
01:26Or cycle to the shop, cycle to school.
01:28The project has grown for over five years,
01:31and now over a thousand cyclists can be seen on the main road.
01:35They, like her, are now ready for any bumpy ride.
