00:00So we're already in a nice good position, this is called cross-cradle position, and mom has her hands really supporting right behind baby's ears
00:08and right on the base of the skull, the palm of the hand is right in the shoulder blades.
00:12So now we'll get baby ready, he is ready to go.
00:16So in positioning you really want to line up nose to nipple, get that nipple right at that top lip
00:21and then as soon as we see that top lip come over the tip of the nipple we just bring baby in closer.
00:26Really think of it as your job to position your baby and your baby's job to latch.
00:31So if you get that baby in that right position with that nipple pointed upward towards the nose
00:36they have a natural rooting reflex to open their mouth toward that direction where they're feeling that touch.
00:43So if we're touching that top lip, baby will open up wide towards the top and get a good deep latch.
00:50We don't see any of mom's areola outside of the mouth.
00:56You can also really help baby just by using the hand that is supporting your breast to squeeze and compress.
01:02That will really help baby to keep going and kind of finish off that feeding as well.
01:07If baby does get really fussy or fidgety at the breast, that's a great way to keep them active.
01:12It's also a great way if they are sleeping at the breast to kind of finish off that feeding and keep them drinking.
01:19But you are looking for that pause in the chin.
01:22And if they really open up wide in that pause and then they come back down, that's a swallow.
01:27That's a swallow.
01:33So in this position, whenever you're holding your hand right here, you can actually help baby to get a little bit deeper as well
01:40just by using the palm of your hand to kind of press in right at the shoulder blades.
01:44And what that does is really helps that chin get on there nice and deep as well so that baby can really take in lots of breast tissue.
01:51So if we have our hand in the right position, we should be able to give good head and neck support for baby.
01:56You're using your thumb and your first finger right behind the ears.
01:59So that if you do need to position baby a little bit deeper or pull back, you can very easily.
02:05We do want to avoid this part of the head.
02:08We don't want to have our hand in here like this.
02:10Babies have a natural reflex to push back against anything that is touching right there.
02:14So your hand position just right at the nape of the neck and the base of the skull,
02:20that's really where you want the base of your hand to be.
02:23The palm of your hand kind of in their shoulders just like you've got right there.
