00:18The Philippine National Chess Team was successful in the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, Hungary.
00:28The women's team was awarded a gold medal for Category B,
00:32consisting of the Women's Grandmaster Janelle Mae Freina,
00:36Women's International Master Jan Jodelyn Fronda,
00:39Women's International Master Bernadette Galas,
00:42Women's FIDE Master Shania Mae Mendoza,
00:45and Women's National Master Roelly Canino.
00:48For the men's team, the 27-year-old woodpusher Daniel Maravilla-Quizon was nominated as the country's 17th Grandmaster.
00:57According to the National Chess Federation of the Philippines' Executive Director and Grandmaster Jason Gonzales,
01:04these wins prove that Filipinos can compete with the best chess players in the world.
01:12Talent-wise, I would say that we are not inferior to the talents of Europeans or other Asian countries
01:21because we are not weak.
01:26We have a lot of talented players.
01:29Gonzales also gave the team what they need to improve their rankings.
01:37We cannot neglect our athletes because they need training.
01:44The only thing that is lacking is exposure and funding.
