00:00Back in 2014, scientists recorded this mysterious sound coming from deep under the surface of
00:09the ocean.
00:18It has since been named the Biotwang, but it has perplexed marine researchers as they
00:22could not identify the source of the sound.
00:25That is, until now.
00:27Experts say these haunting marine sounds are actually the calls of the bird's whale moving
00:31across vast areas of open ocean.
00:42They say they weren't able to identify it before because bird's whale populations and
00:46movements around our planet's oceans are not well known, but further research in the area
00:50narrowed down the culprit of the sound.
00:52With researchers identifying 9 specific whales they believe the calls came from, and this
00:56provides new evidence for even broader distribution of these marine mammals and suggests higher
01:01numbers of them in western north pacific waters.
01:04With the researchers concluding, we identified a consistent seasonal presence of Biotwangs
01:09only in the Mariana archipelago and to the east at Wake Island.
01:12This suggests the Biotwang may be a call specific to a western north pacific population of bird's
01:17whales.
