00:00Candace Cameron Bure may be the Queen of Christmas, but she still ended up on the naughty list
00:05time and time again. Just ask her former Hallmark Channel co-stars.
00:10Candace Cameron Bure and Raven-Symoné clashed frequently when they appeared together on
00:15The View. Due to Bure's conservative views and Raven-Symoné being an out lesbian, that
00:20opposition came into focus during a 2015 episode when the panel discussed an Oregon bakery
00:26that refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. Raven-Symoné described the
00:30bakery's stance as straight-out discrimination, but Bure disagreed.
00:34"'This is about freedom of association. It's about constitutional rights. It's about First
00:39Amendment rights. We do have the right to still choose who we associate with.'"
00:43Raven-Symoné then fired back, saying,
00:45"'I refuse to associate myself with you right now.'"
00:48Bure stated that the bakery owners had no problem with the couple, but objected to their
00:52same-sex wedding ceremony because it conflicted with their religious beliefs, feeling that
00:57marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Not surprisingly, Bure would later
01:01reveal that she shared that view, which would lead to further controversy.
01:06Back in 2017, Bure posted a photo of herself on Instagram, attired in a T-shirt bearing
01:12the phrase,
01:13"'Not today, Satan.'"
01:14She may or may not have been aware that the phrase had been extensively merchandised by
01:18Bianca Del Rio, who won the sixth season of RuPaul's Drag Race.
01:23"'Not today, Satan.'"
01:24The flamboyant drag queen, who also goes by Roy Haylock, wasn't having it, and issued
01:29a scathing response, reposting the photo with the caption,
01:32"'If only. This homophobic. Republican new.'"
01:35Bure later responded to Del Rio, writing,
01:38"'Why do you have to be nasty to me? You don't know me or my heart. I'm not homophobic. Loving
01:43Jesus doesn't mean I hate gay people or anyone. You sent a bunch of hateful people to my page
01:48writing horrible things.'"
01:49Ironically, in 2020, Candace Cameron Bure was struck with backlash over concerns that
01:55she wasn't being conservative enough. The issue at hand was a photo that she'd posted
01:59on Instagram, featuring her posing with her husband, Valerie Bure, who had his arm wrapped
02:04around his wife's shoulder, with the palm of his hand resting upon one of her breasts.
02:08Candance was slammed by her social media followers, who deemed the couple's display of PDA to
02:13be, at best, sending a bad message, or, at worst, downright
02:18immoral. She initially removed the offending photo, but then reposted it to Instagram Stories,
02:23along with a rebuke for those who attacked her.
02:25"'For all of the Christians that are questioning my post with my husband's hand on my boob,
02:30my husband of 24 years, thinking it was inappropriate, it makes me laugh because it's my husband.
02:35We have so much fun together. He can touch me anytime he wants, and I hope he does. This
02:39is what a healthy, good marriage and relationship is all about.'"
02:44Over the years, it's become something of a grim observation that whenever a horrific
02:48mass shooting occurs in the U.S., politicians who oppose gun control legislation will typically
02:53respond by sending their,
02:55"...thoughts and prayers to the loved ones of the victims."
02:57That was at the heart of an Instagram post issued by actor Kristen Bell when she congratulated
03:03Dick's Sporting Goods for making the move to raise the age limit to 21 in order to purchase
03:08firearms.
03:09She wrote,
03:10"...is a perfect example of something better than thoughts and prayers. Bravo, Dick's Sporting
03:14Goods for your common sense, humanity, open ears and willingness to change. We need more
03:20corporations like you."
03:21Dick's Sporting Goods had explicitly referenced,
03:24"...thoughts and prayers in their announcement."
03:26Hence, Bell's comment.
03:27But for some reason, Bure still took issue with Bell, complaining,
03:31"...how about instead of diminishing prayers, which are powerful, you recaption, in addition
03:36to prayers here is something really great."
03:38Bell did not respond to Bure's comment.
03:41Candice Cameron Bure experienced what was arguably her strangest controversy in 2021
03:47when she took to TikTok to share a video that she apparently intended to be spiritually
03:51inspirational. In that video, which she later deleted, Bure lip-synched to,
03:56"...jealous girl," from singer Lana Del Rey as she brandished a Bible. A caption read,
04:01"...when they don't know the power of the Holy Spirit."
04:03Bure was deluged with comments from those who were appalled by what they'd just witnessed,
04:08with one commenter writing,
04:09"...the Holy Spirit isn't seductive. What is this?"
04:12Another disgruntled fan of the Holy Spirit wrote,
04:15"...sensualizing your belief in the Holy Spirit? Kinda missing the mark here."
04:19Bure quickly responded via Instagram Stories,
04:21"...I usually don't apologize for these things, but a lot of you thought it was weird and
04:27I'm sorry, that was not my intention."
04:30She went on to add,
04:31"...so many of you thought that I was trying to be seductive, which clearly means I'm not
04:35a very good actress because I was trying to be strong, not sexy or seductive."
04:41Candice Cameron Bure spearheaded efforts to revive Full House, resulting in Netflix picking
04:46up the spinoff series Fuller House. In 2018, a new character was introduced, Casey. Played
04:52by Miss Benny, Casey was the first gay character to appear in the Full House franchise, but
04:57she only stuck around for two episodes, never to be seen again.
05:00In 2023, Miss Benny alleged on TikTok that the character had been intended to recur throughout
05:06but faced opposition from someone on the show. She said,
05:09"...I remember I got sat down by the writers in the studio to basically warn me how this
05:13person allegedly was trying to get the character removed and not have a queer character on
05:17the show."
05:18Miss Benny did not exactly name names, but Bure was mentioned in the caption and hashtags.
05:23Bure later denied she had anything to do with Miss Benny's ouster, saying in a statement,
05:27"...I never asked Miss Benny's character to be removed from Fuller House and did not ask
05:31the writers, producers, or studio executives to not have queer characters on the show."
05:36During the 2019 holiday season, Hallmark Channel yanked a scheduled TV commercial featuring
05:42a same-sex couple. The backlash was so severe that the network's head honcho, Bill Abbott,
05:47was replaced. Since then, Hallmark Channel has increased efforts to add more diversity
05:52to its programming, debuting two Christmas movies with gay couples in 2023. Abbott then
05:57formed GAC Media and launched the Great American Family Network, which features Hallmark-style
06:03programming with a more conservative bent. They even poached numerous Hallmark stars,
06:08including Bure.
06:09In April 2022, Variety reported that Bure, who'd churned out so many Hallmark holiday
06:14movies she earned the nickname the Queen of Christmas, had cut ties with Hallmark and
06:18joined GAC Media, installed as GAC's chief creative officer. Speaking with The Wall Street
06:24Journal later that year, Bure implied that the reason she left Hallmark for GAC was because
06:28of Hallmark's foray into gay-friendly programming, saying,
06:32"...I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core."
06:35Bure's statements were met with furious backlash, forcing Abbott to step in and do damage control.
06:41He told Variety,
06:42"...It's like the disclaimer you see at the end of a movie or a series that says, the
06:46views reflected here are not necessarily those of the company. When she speaks on that, she's
06:50not speaking on behalf of Great American Media."
06:53It's always been the most important thing personally to me, my faith in Jesus. And now
06:57I'm at the point in my life where I want to share that with everyone."
07:02Candice Cameron Bure's comments about traditional marriage set off a firestorm among those who
07:07interpreted that phrase as being homophobic. One Tree Hill alum Hilary Burton, who'd appeared
07:12in the Hallmark movies Surprised by Love, among others, bashed Bure and her new company
07:17in some scathing tweets, writing,
07:19"...Now they're just openly admitting their bigotry. I called this s---- out years ago
07:23when Abbott was at Hallmark. Glad they dumped him. That guy and his network are disgusting.
07:27You too, Candy. There is nothing untraditional about same-sex couples."
07:31Burton followed that with another tweet, blasting Bure with both barrels,
07:35"...Bigot. I don't remember Jesus liking hypocrites like Candy. But sure, make your money, honey.
07:39You ride that prejudice wave all the way to the bank."
07:42Two days later, Bure responded with a lengthy Instagram post. But rather than take ownership
07:47of what she'd said, she instead slammed the media for covering the story.
07:51Fellow Hallmark Channel stalwart Holly Robinson-Pete also was not impressed by Bure's comments
07:57about so-called traditional marriage. In an Instagram post, which has since been deleted,
08:02Pete wrote,
08:03"...there was a time when the words, tradition and traditional, were used to denigrate others
08:07and to justify discriminatory laws like it wasn't traditional for people to marry interracially."
08:12Pete then went on to explain the impact of Bure's words,
08:15"...so when we hear the words traditional marriage to describe one type of marriage,
08:19it belittles the love and commitment that many legally married people have for each
08:23other. And it triggers many of us to a time that we remember how the word, tradition,
08:27was cloaked in Christianity. And we were basically told that God didn't want equality for all."
08:33Out and Proud pop star JoJo Siwa shared an anecdote about meeting Candace Cameron Bure
08:38when she was a kid, and it was not pretty.
08:40In a 2022 TikTok post, Siwa answered rapid-fire questions from fans. In response to a query
08:46about the rudest celebrity she'd ever encountered, she displayed a photo of Bure on her phone.
08:51Bure, for her part, said she had no recollection of their meeting, which Siwa explained came
08:56on the red carpet when she was 11 years old, with Bure refusing to pose for a photo together.
09:01But Siwa later clarified that she held no ill will toward Bure, telling Page Six,
09:06"...I think it just was an inconvenient time for her, and little 11-year-old me was just
09:10so pumped up and so excited. But that doesn't mean she's the worst human ever. It just,
09:14you know, it was a rough experience for me."
09:16Siwa's mom, Jessalyn Siwa, recalled the incident in an episode of her podcast and wrote on
09:21Instagram,
09:22"...At the end of the day this story, it's not about a simple photo, it's about how you
09:26treat people."
09:27It's no secret that Candace Cameron Bure's public image took a huge hit after sharing
09:32her views on traditional marriage. While that seems to be an obvious case of people simply
09:36not liking her comments, she didn't quite see it that way. From her perspective, the
09:40lousy PR she'd received wasn't because of what she'd said, but because she'd been targeted
09:45by so-called cancel culture. During a 2023 appearance on the Unapologetic podcast, Bure
09:51suggested that the solution was to band together to stamp out cancel culture, or in other words,
09:57cancel it.
09:58"...Cancel culture is real and it is difficult. I just want to encourage you that you are
10:01not the only one, and there are lots of us, and we are always stronger together."
10:06When Paris hosted the Summer Olympics in 2024, tradition was broken by holding the opening
10:11ceremony on the Seine instead of within a stadium. Reviews for the boldly creative opening
10:15were largely positive, with Time describing the spectacle as
10:18"...occasionally weird, wildly ambitious, ultimately wonderful and extremely French."
10:24The ceremony did not receive a rave review from Candace Cameron Bure, however, who was
10:28taken aback by a segment that featured drag queens in a tableau featuring the ancient
10:33Greek god of wine and festivity, Dionysus. Bure, like some other confused viewers, mistakenly
10:38believed the performance was riffing off of Leonardo da Vinci's iconic mural, The Last
10:44Supper, something which she found disrespectful. She let her opinion be known in a video she
10:48posted to Instagram, explaining that she'd always found the Olympics to be inspiring
10:52— until now.
10:53So to watch such an incredible and wonderful event that's going to take place over the
10:57next two weeks, and see the opening ceremony completely blaspheme and mock the Christian
11:02faith with their interpretation of The Last Supper, was disgusting. It made me so sad.
11:07Bure was seemingly dragged by fellow Full House alum Jodie Sweetin, who commented on
11:12an Instagram Stories video about people who'd misunderstood the intent of that part of the
11:17ceremony,
11:18"...tell me you don't know about art or history without telling me you don't know about art
11:21or history."
