00:00It's time to say welcome once again to the Indian Oil Asia Cup and we are coming to you
00:28from Dambulla where Game 4 is about to kick off. The hosts are here today, Sri Lanka versus
00:34the United Arab Emirates. Now what's been happening in recent times here in Dambulla?
00:40The last three games are interesting because average first-ingame scores here have been
00:43about 175 and you can see that recent averages are a bit different. This track is now giving
00:48a little more to the batsmen, 262, 245 and 260. Now in terms of bowling, not much to
00:56choose at, 31 and 32, but the spinners have bowled less and taken an almost equal number
01:02of wickets, so they've gone for more runs. So maybe this is a slightly historical fact
01:06as well. Now Michael Slater has been up and around, he's been taking a look at the pitch,
01:12still a win the toss and bat first kind of pitch and do you see a change in character,
01:16more and more runs coming around? The fact that it's being used for the second day running,
01:20it's obviously, it started dry, we've proven that with our new moisture content reader
01:25and it'll dry out even more as this game goes on. What that means from a cricketing point
01:29of view is that it'll start to play slower and slower. That's where the bowlers need
01:34to keep their accuracy, not try and do too much. With the new ball it'll get through
01:37a little quicker but it's that accuracy that'll make run scoring hard and from a batting perspective,
01:44Raul Dravid yesterday proved that you don't have to hit big shots to score at a runner
01:48ball. His 100, he played it perfectly, used a straight bat, something that UAE have to
01:53learn. I mean they played across the line far too often yesterday and they've got to
01:58start playing good lines which I mean down the ground with this straight bat if they're
02:02to you know not have another four real BWs. Now we'll find out who won the toss so far
02:08in this tournament, certainly on the evidence of what we've seen so far. The team that's
02:11won the toss has batted, it's a good sign. Let's see what happens today, here's Ravi
02:15Shastri with the toss. Who's going to toss the coin gentlemen? It's Khurram Khan who's
02:20going to toss the coin. Heads is the call. And heads it is. Well Myla you won the toss,
02:29what have you decided? I'm going to bet on this Ravi because it looks pretty dry. I think
02:35we need to get the best out of this before it gets slowed down. Well second game as captain,
02:40what's happened to Marvin? Ah no just resting, I think we have a few guys which we need to
02:44try out in this tournament and the guy's a bit tired, Vasi's left out as well, I think
02:48he needs a bit of a rest. But Murali's back, good news for us and hopefully we'll have
02:53a good game. Well Khurram you lost the toss again, disappointed? Well I think it looks
02:58good to bet on and we have batted yesterday. So I thought yeah if we would have won the
03:02toss it would have been better. But still no problem, I think we're going to try and
03:05restrict them as much as possible. Then have a go and what we did wrong yesterday, try
03:09and rectify that. Yes there you are, Sri Lanka then today without a couple of key players,
03:15Racing Giant and Jaya Surya, then Sangakkara, Jaya Vardhana, Dilshan, Guna Vardhana, Kandambi
03:20we'd like to take a look at him, Chandana, Zoysa, Murali and Nislinga, Lasith Malinga.
03:26The Emirates have made a couple of changes, Asghar Ali Khan keeps wickets today then there's
03:31room for Sameer Zia and Ram Veera Rai. So they've made three changes in the side, Asim
03:36Saeed, Arshad Ali, Fahad Usman, the batting order is still the same. Fairly unknown bowlers
03:42and you don't know what they're going to do. And at that point there's a little hesitation
03:45isn't there, because you don't know what's coming your way. Well that's it, once you've
03:47played against a team a few times you get used to the way, you know, let's say it's
03:52Jamin Devats, once you've faced him a few times you know from a right-hander he's going
03:55to be swinging the ball back in. But when you're facing a bowler for the first time,
03:59it does, it is quite difficult and you've got to give yourself a couple of overs to
04:03get a feel for what they do with the ball and how fast they are. Just to give you an
04:07idea of how global this game is going, Sanad Jaya Surya has just come in from the north
04:12of Australia and Saman Janda, his opening partners, just joined him from England where
04:16he was with the Sri Lanka A team and they've both come home to open the batting for Sri
04:21Lanka today. And Jaya Surya, Professor Dino told us right at the start that he hasn't
04:26had too many big scores in the last 10 innings, so he'll be looking for a big one here. It's
04:31amazing, you watch Jaya Surya and you think his score runs all his life and he averages
04:3431. Let's just have a little look at this fellow at the bowler's end and he's taking
04:38the first bowler.
05:09He's standing a little bit too far back, already a couple of balls have died already.
05:13Good delivery. An excellent delivery, it was of a fuller length, he's quickly learned that
05:18once he keeps the ball up there, he's always going to have the batsman enquiring. Saman
05:22Janda going back on the back foot, it's not a very good shot in fact, he got himself squared
05:27up and that outside edge, just falling short of the wicket keeper.
05:32I think he's too far back. Backing up a long way from the bowler's end.
05:38That's a nice shot, no run. Oh, bad misfield. Shocking misfield, they should get at least two.
05:47Yes, the captain did speak of being satisfied with the levels of fielding of the UAE team
05:53yesterday. They'll need to try and look at far higher standards in order to try and curb
05:59some of the better teams. And that was bad, that bounce was right, took his eyes off at
06:04the wrong time.
06:09Well bowled. Oh, shocking misfield, really was shocking. Oh, and that might go away for
06:17four down the ground, it does. Poor fielding, doesn't support his ball up, 26 for no loss.
06:27Oh, well what's happened here, he's done his leg, I hope he's OK. He's right knee, he's
06:36come in hard and oh, I hope he's OK. He's come in here, just watch his footwork, gets
06:44in close, oh he hits Porky Parker, and why wouldn't you fall off? Look at the size of
06:49him. Oh, the ricochet. Porky, you can cancel Porky, but get out of the way, let him come
06:56in and bowl the ball. He's done his knee, he's taken, Australian's taken one of the
07:00guys, look at him bump him off. Oh, and he's just wrenched his left knee.
07:05Should there be a regulation for size of umpires, do you know? I think they could be something
07:12that bowlers would find difficult to get through.
07:19Oh, in the air, could carry all the way down. Oh, what's he doing down there? Oh, and he's
07:24done a hand. Now, that's interesting, the umpires will have to come into play and stop
07:28this, because he's injured his hand and he's in a lot of trouble. It's all happening, there's
07:34only nine green bottles left on the wall here. He's tried to come in, tried to catch
07:40the ball, the ball was floating, and he's jarred his left elbow I think. Oh, the doctor's
07:46busy here. Get Doctor Michael Slater out there.
07:54And now he's wrenched his left knee with his weight falling on it, and whether or not he
07:59could have dislocated it there easily, and they're in a lot of trouble.
08:07Yes, I think it would seem the enthusiasm, though enthusiasm again, doing on that occasion,
08:13losing his balance, just failed to make the catch and falling on that arm of his, may
08:20have dislocated it. Certainly seems to be in serious trouble.
08:25Well, there's one doctor inside trying to look after Asim Saeed. Doctor Michael Slater
08:32and nurse Anna Glee is on the way down. But watching him fall down on his left arm there,
08:37and oh, that jars it on the left elbow, that will be in a lot of pain. He'll be hurting,
08:42it really will be hurting. Well, we'll just have to take another break here unfortunately.
08:47Sri Lanka, 31 for no loss.
08:51Well, just went past the outside edge. I think he was playing for the one that was coming
08:56back in. And the UAE get their first wicket, and the innocence and the smile appears.
09:04Well, it's the old saying, isn't it? If the batsman misses, you hit, and that's exactly
09:08right. The other thing bowlers work on is hitting the top of off, and that was perfect.
09:13Big angle. The right-hander, Masoud, he comes into the right-hander, just held slightly,
09:19just enough to beat Jayantha for 18, 39 for 1.
09:27New man in is Avishka Gunawardana. He's a better player than that, average of 28.6,
09:33a century and seven fifties. Action is the key for these innings.
09:41How close is that? Close enough.
09:44He's played all over that, and I just wonder if the ball actually has come off a little
09:50too slow for the batsman. He's played all around it, another wicket and a big one.
09:56Always happens, doesn't it? You talk a batsman up, you say what he has to do, and then the
09:59very next ball, he gets out. And the concentration did let him down, because on this pitch, you've
10:05got to play straight. Pitches on line, and hits him bang in front of middle stump. Huge
10:12mistake from Jayasaraya. Where's the straight back gone? Back to the pavilion for 21, 41
10:18for 2.
10:21New man in is Kumar Sangakkara with Sri Lanka in just a bit of trouble. Game 4 of the Indian
10:26Oil Asia Cup. He's the man in form, though, in the Test match game. One day average, 31.17.
10:33Two quick wickets. The two openers back in the pavilion.
10:38That's it. A shot of authority, just a gentle push, and it goes all the way. Timing impeccable.
10:47If you don't watch Avishla Gunawadana bat, he's always looked like in the one day cricket
10:53he can be a force. As you said Michael, he's never really been in long enough to play with
10:59confidence, but he can hit the ball hard and he can score runs very quickly. I've always
11:04liked the look of him as well, and I've been surprised that he hasn't had more of an opportunity,
11:09but it's so true. If the selectors have faith in you, the coach backs you and says, look,
11:14we're going to give you this whole Asia Cup, say, and we're not going to drop you, that's
11:20all a batsman needs sometimes.
11:23Well, he's gone for this one as well, and that's headed towards the boundary as well.
11:26He likes those bank billboards, he keeps hitting them all the time.
11:29That's a very good shot. Left hand is typically as strong through this area, but what I like
11:40about it is that big front foot movement.
11:48Now that's crashed away through the offside, he's such a powerful player in that region.
11:53You ball in that area and he's going to smash you all day.
12:00Now this is blasted through the offside, Wes.
12:03You can't bowl him there. I mean, that's where his strength lies. Just outside of some
12:08slightly wide-edge, he'll hammer you. Doesn't matter if you're a fielder back there or not,
12:12he will find a gap there.
12:15You can trouble the best players.
12:18Now that's a good shot. Fractionally over-pitched there, and that's Salvatore onto it in a flash.
12:24That's what happens with the top batting in the world. You can't lose your concentration.
12:30This was slightly full of delivery, and Sangra Kara just was at it at a flash.
12:36He just saw it, front foot, opened the face of the bat just to find a gap, and four runs.
12:42The game has been a regular wicked take-up.
12:49No need to run for that.
12:52Once again, the big man getting a big stride forward and peppering that offside fielder.
13:00Again, a full of delivery, outside off stump, asking for trouble.
13:03That was a slow delivery, but Guru Vardhana was at it.
13:07I mean, he was expecting it as well. He looked like it.
13:10And this guy can be a danger man against any side in the world nowadays.
13:16That's right. He looks in good touch. 19 of just 15 balls.
13:22And what's good to see is when he's driving, he's offering the full face of the blade.
13:31Well, Shaz and Vashos, these are the three girls who are competing against each other, as one would say.
13:40Sashini, Sandun and Irangi.
13:46And that's four more.
13:52This is loose bowling, very average bowling.
13:55Watch the captain do and talk to him, tell him to come back around over the wicket to bowl at left-hander,
14:00because he's given a lot of room to a left-hander.
14:03You can see it's swinging, but again, right in the slot.
14:14Batsmen like Guru Vardhana love to hit these shots, and that's where his strength lies.
14:18You should know that's what they've done yesterday, done their homework against the opposition.
14:48I think that should be a boundary.
14:51I'm sure the umpire will ask for the action replay.
14:55And you'll see that when the ball touches the hand, the leg is touching the boundary.
15:00So I think this might just be signal 4.
15:19Let's have a look.
15:22Let's have a look, that is four runs.
15:2864 run partnership, there is the shout, and gone!
15:31Well I thought it might have pitched outside leg stuff, but it did him in length.
15:35He's played back to a ball that's quite full, and he's been given.
15:39Sangekara's gone.
15:42I think it's a good decision.
15:44The only question was whether the ball pitched outside the leg stump.
15:47I don't think it did, because it was tossed up.
15:49It curved into him a little bit.
15:59There, it is tossed up a little bit, and the question is whether it pitched outside the leg stump.
16:03Might have pitched outside the leg stump.
16:06But it caught him right in front.
16:09Sangekara, out for 17.
16:11Sri Lanka, 3 down, fondum 5.
16:42They realise he doesn't spin the ball that much.
16:44It was a ball that was just outside of stump.
16:46Opened the blade up, and ran the ball down through first set.
16:50Beautiful shot.
16:51Well you know Dino, I think this guy has got real talent.
16:55Real skill.
16:58The first ball that he's received, and look at the way he's played it.
17:02I mean, it requires supreme skill and confidence to be able to play a shot like that,
17:06or the first ball that you...
17:09Oh, lovely shot. That'll run away.
17:11It's very, very quick down there.
17:13Right down towards the boundary.
17:15Will it be cut off? It's not.
17:16Lovely stroke indeed.
17:18His third boundary.
17:21Well it's given him a bit of room around the off stump to play that shot.
17:25And we've seen already earlier in the over that he can play that shot very, very well.
17:30Playing it very late.
17:32Playing it wide of the fielder at backward point.
17:38One, one, Ramu, one.
17:41Oh, there he should pick up two.
17:42He's calling Jai Vardhana for two now.
17:44Oh dear.
17:45That really, really was unnecessary.
17:49Because Jai Vardhana was calling for the second all the way as soon as he'd played the shot.
17:54Guna Vardhana said no for a very long time,
17:57and then suddenly decided he was going to, and that happens so often.
18:00By the time he said yes, Jai Vardhana decided the run was not on.
18:04There's Guna Vardhana.
18:05He's put his hand up,
18:06and now by the time he decides to run,
18:08Jai Vardhana has started decelerating,
18:10thinking that the run is not on, and they're caught mid-shift.
18:13This really is absolutely unnecessary and a wonderful innings.
18:17It's come to an end.
18:18Jai Vardhana, 26 from 26, looking good for much more.
18:20143 for 4.
18:24Very promising young man comes in as well to replace one of the stars of Fremont Cricket,
18:29Dilakaratna Dilshan.
18:31But that's been done too many times.
18:34Oh, that's a good ball.
18:35That's a good ball.
18:37Certainly beat him on that defensive shot.
18:40Just wonder if it struck him outside the line.
18:42Certainly was a very good delivery.
18:44In fact, Dilshan was taken by surprise here.
18:47Probably, as you did mention, I suspect it did hit him outside the line,
18:51and that's what saved him.
18:52Just marginally, very, very marginally long hit of the ball.
18:57What a wonderful delivery that was,
18:59beating him, just getting the outside edge and clean bowling him.
19:02Excellent delivery, catching Dilshan on the front foot,
19:05but playing inside the line, a little bit of spin, and he goes.
19:09What a wonderful delivery from the captain, Kuram Khan.
19:13And there you are, just look at this.
19:15Dilshan just feeling for it, not getting his foot right far forward,
19:18and the ball doing sufficient to beat the outside edge,
19:21and now knocking the off stump on.
19:23And Dilshan goes.
19:24And Sri Lanka losing another very, very important wicket.
19:27Dilshan for 6, 151 for 5.
19:32This next batsman, Thilina Kandambi, stockily built young man.
19:37It's 3-1 international so far.
19:40And still searching for a few runs against his name.
19:45But another player who's just come in off the Sri Lanka 8-1.
19:54Here's back to the cricket.
19:55And back some good fielding as well.
19:57There you go, there you go.
20:01Yes, we really haven't seen too much action from the Sri Lankan batsmen.
20:04In fact, all credit to the UAE bowlers and the fielders.
20:09In fact, they've realized that they've got the Sri Lankans in some sort of trouble
20:14and now need to drive home this advantage.
20:16Avishkodh Wadhan now moving up to 50, a fine villain of century.
20:21That's taken. Chipped in the air, beaten by the flight.
20:26And the UAE have picked up another wicket.
20:28This is a good period of play for the team from the United Arab Emirates.
20:34161 for 6 Sri Lanka and in the squad of Wadhan.
20:38Yes, I've got to watch it now, the Sri Lankans,
20:40because the ball's not quite coming on to the bat.
20:42You can see that. Chipped in the air to mid-wicket.
20:46Chipped in the air to mid-wicket.
20:49And another wicket falls.
20:51And Sri Lanka now, they've got to really watch it.
20:54161 for 6.
20:57Upul Chandana comes out.
20:59In fact, he's there already, but coming out to the middle will...
21:06It's because the UAE have picked up another wicket.
21:10And this is how Kandambi went.
21:11Beaten in the flight, checking his shot.
21:13And this is an opportunity he's wasted.
21:17These are young players in the Sri Lankan side
21:19who have been given a chance.
21:20There's no Attapatu today.
21:21Don't forget, Russell Arnold has been dropped.
21:23Now, he has a very good record in one-day cricket.
21:26There's a push in fact for you.
21:28Gavaskar was the Indian team manager for two matches
21:30versus Pakistan in 94.
21:36Was it sunny? Two matches?
21:38That was when Ajit Wadhekar had a problem and was taken to hospital.
21:47He goes for the big one and...
21:50It's taken in the deep.
21:51Very, very good catch.
21:53That is an excellent catch.
21:55Just for a moment, the fielder and everybody out here
21:58thought that the ball would clear the rope.
22:01But Sameer Zia has kept his eyes on the ball
22:03and come up with an excellent catch.
22:06Yes, it is a top-class catch.
22:08Look at that.
22:09He's kept his eyes on the ball till the very end.
22:13And holding on to it,
22:15even as he's trying to recover his balance,
22:19it's a very, very good catch.
22:22And Abhishek Gunwardana has thrown it away.
22:25But he's got 73-190 for 7.
22:30So Nuwan Soysa comes out to the middle.
22:35Sri Lanka have just lost the wicket of Abhishek Gunwardana.
22:39I think it was the cramps that did the trick there.
22:43And they went for the big hit
22:47and hold out on the deep.
22:52So, Khurram Khan having a good day.
22:55Three wickets so far.
23:07Two runs to Soysa.
23:09He gets off the mark.
23:13Soysa's coming back for the second.
23:14He's got big legs.
23:15He'll get there quite easily.
23:21200 comes up for Sri Lanka.
23:24Maybe just a touch of relief.
23:28450 to 58 deliveries.
23:31And a good catch by Abhishek Gunwardana.
23:34And a good catch by Abhishek Gunwardana.
23:37And a good catch by Abhishek Gunwardana.
23:40Soysa took 58 deliveries.
23:43So it's coming slightly quicker time than the third
23:46where the UAE spinners were really bowling well.
23:52And they'll sneak one more in.
23:57Soysa will take the overthrow as well.
23:59So they're getting a few runs in.
24:00Chandana was struggling at the other end.
24:02It's all happening.
24:03203 for 7.
24:05Over.
24:08We'll see how we'd best go about it.
24:17Well, I don't think he hit that as well as he'd have liked to.
24:19But he got the placement good enough.
24:20And that's good enough to get him four.
24:24Just got a little high on the bat.
24:27But at this point, he'll take the runs that come.
24:30And to be fair, he hit it in the right place.
24:36Gift presented Chandana.
24:38He had all the time in the world to place that where he wanted it to.
24:41The execution was very good.
24:44Four more to the Sri Lankan total.
24:51Knocked him over.
24:52Across the lane.
24:53We've been talking about playing straight.
24:54Right through these two games in Dambulla.
24:57Went across.
24:58And Ali Abbas hits the stumps.
25:01213 for 8 now.
25:03There's still five overs after this over.
25:06And he would have been better served just to play another couple fairly sensibly.
25:13There's too much across the line play for my liking.
25:16Chandana.
25:17Well, it was a useful 21.
25:19213 for 8.
25:23Average of 5.91.
25:25Strikeout of 17.
25:26Got a one that was number 11.
25:28And he makes up shots.
25:30You'll find no shot that comes out of the textbook really.
25:33He's one of those batsmen that you just love watching.
25:37You don't know where he's going to try and hit it.
25:39Very inventive.
25:43Michael, that was a very orthodox trade back down the line.
25:46That is textbook.
25:47He's made a liar of me.
25:49The wicket once again.
25:50Playing across the line.
25:51Chandana.
25:52In with his ball in.
26:01And the two ball goes to the bowler's end.
26:03And Murali was on the hot tin roof.
26:06He had to go.
26:07He's on.
26:13Murali wants a second.
26:16And he'll get it.
26:17The throwing wasn't great.
26:18But Murali adjusted the second pretty well.
26:21And you just feel with this pitch getting slower and slower
26:24that the slower the bowler, the harder it is to hit.
26:31No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
26:36So another two.
26:37It is a 222 for it.
26:4087 on the offside.
26:42We'll come back to that.
26:44And bowled.
26:45Murali, the first time he tries to do something a little out of the ordinary.
26:49Advances down the pitch.
26:51Once again, trying to hit across the line of the ball to the onside
26:55and through the gate.
26:56Well flighted from the skipper.
26:58Haram Khan.
26:59And it did grip a little bit and ends up hitting middle and leg stump.
27:05It's disappointing.
27:06Trying to get through the 50.
27:07He's gone for three.
27:09All the twos for nine.
27:12Out comes Lasith Malinga.
27:1420 years old.
27:15Slingy bowler.
27:16But this time he's got bat in hand.
27:19He's got to breathe there.
27:20He's got to bat.
27:212.4 overs in the career.
27:23He's got to breathe there.
27:24He's got to bat.
27:252.4 overs in the company of Zoysa.
27:28Side fairly much in form.
27:30Oh no, is that five for him?
27:36The umpire wants another look.
27:39Did Zoysa overbalance a little bit?
27:44Certainly the wicketkeeper didn't gather it cleanly,
27:46but it might have rebounded.
27:49This will be interesting.
27:50His very last ball of his spell.
27:52Player miss.
27:53The foot goes out.
27:54I think the big fella's got back
27:57the advantage having those long legs.
28:01It is a very long leg, that back foot.
28:03The crucial point was, did he ground his foot?
28:06And I think he has.
28:11So little between the fourth and the fifth.
28:14The light's green.
28:19Not a bad ball.
28:21Malinga didn't know where it was.
28:23He did it for a while.
28:27So Mike, will they take the score?
28:28It's clear it's not going to go too much beyond this.
28:312.26, 2.30.
28:33Enough?
28:35I think it's definitely enough to win this match,
28:37but they'll be disappointed as to how they've gone about it.
28:40They've really been fighting with this slow pitch.
28:43Never really got into any groove.
28:45India started yesterday fighting with it,
28:47and then slowly got better and better.
28:49Not the case for Sri Lanka.
28:53He's got it fine.
28:54Finally goes inside the circle.
28:56He just had to beat him, and he does,
28:58and that's four, and that'll be heartbreaking
29:00for the UAE.
29:012.30 for nine.
29:07Just over.
29:08And they should be looking at two.
29:10In fact, Malinga's looking good for three.
29:12Zoyser is into this stage.
29:14Now he's got to come running back.
29:15Go Zoyser, go.
29:16But they'll get three.
29:19And then he turns around and looks for a fourth.
29:21Malinga's just 20 and young and energetic
29:23playing his first one-day game.
29:24He wants to charge down.
29:26Zoyser's a little more Buddhist than he is, I think.
29:28He's a little more laid-back and a little happier with life.
29:34There's a nice little chip shot there from Zoyser.
29:44Three to play.
29:50Oh, that beat everyone.
29:51That beat everybody, and that's turned out
29:53to be a pretty productive ball in the end for Sri Lanka.
29:58A great result for Sri Lanka.
30:00They missed everything.
30:02And the wicket-keeper, who is caught with his legs apart.
30:07Malinga.
30:19Asghar Ali Khan is the wicket-keeper.
30:22I suspect he's a stand-in wicket-keeper.
30:24Most of what he's done today suggested that.
30:32Now, two to play.
30:36Two to play.
30:42So Zoyser will get away with the last ball after all.
30:442.39 for nine.
30:45We're talking of 2.40.
30:47We're getting to about 2.40.
30:52Now he can cut loose and look for a maximum
30:55off the last ball of this innings,
30:57given that it's not a wide or a no-ball.
31:01But he will be looking for a big one, won't he?
31:04I think Zoyser will chip it for a single.
31:08Let's see what he does.
31:09Trying to protect his average.
31:14Well, they're expecting him to hit down the ground
31:16because third man is in.
31:18Fine leg is in.
31:24Down in the outfield.
31:25It's taken.
31:26It's taken.
31:27So Zoyser does do what's expected of him.
31:29Holds out in the deep.
31:30The catch was taken by Samir Zia.
31:32And of the last ball of the 50th over,
31:34a wicket goes down.
31:38Actually, then he gets a wicket in his first over
31:40in One Day Internationals.
31:43And he'll be happy with that.
31:44And tidy take in the deep.
31:47The ball was the right length for Zoyser
31:49to try and pick it up and hit it over the rope
31:52in the outfield for a six.
31:54Didn't quite get hold of it.
31:56Oh, he's hard with that old ball.
31:59So let's see what Sri Lanka have managed here.
32:01Zoyser and Malinga.
32:02Last two men coming out.
32:03Zoyser, last wicket to go, in fact.
32:05And Sri Lanka have finished with 239.
32:08Gunawardana was the anchor, 73.
32:11But a few others got starts.
32:1218, 21, 17, 26.
32:14Even Chandana, Zoyser, 239.
32:19The slow bowlers were the pick of the bowlers
32:20for the UAE.
32:23Samir Zia, Muhammad Tahir, and Khudram Khan.
32:26They were excellent.
32:27Ali Abbas, two for 35.
32:30But it has been fantastic so far.
32:33And hopefully they'll stay away as well.
32:35We got a little bit of drizzle today at the SSC,
32:37but we got a completed game in there.
32:43Walter bowled a new ball.
32:44He's out because of an injury.
32:51240 is a pretty big target.
32:56Ram Veera.
33:00That's a good shot.
33:03Scored away, and there is enough momentum on that ball.
33:06It will go all the way for four.
33:09So while we're getting quite excited watching Malinga,
33:12don't forget, UAE are getting runs off him.
33:15Yes, as soon as the ball is dug in short
33:17on a pitch like this, it really makes it easy
33:19for the batsman to play him.
33:20It does come on.
33:21And that was struck very, very effectively
33:24through the offside.
33:27Just look at Malinga, that long stride.
33:29And this brings about memories of Jeff Thompson.
33:33Just look at the big man, the great man.
33:36So he certainly is someone, that hero he could look at.
33:40Oh, good ball, good ball.
33:42What a way to end the over.
33:43With some nasty deliveries.
33:46That's a good shot, actually.
33:47It's come right in front of the stumps,
33:48but he's got bats to ball.
33:51I think three is in order here.
33:57It's Malinga.
33:58Here they stand proud, withstanding this heavy breeze.
34:01It was a beautiful time.
34:02My first vision of Sri Lanka was that.
34:05Oh, that's beautiful.
34:06That's good enough.
34:08Full and straight.
34:10And Peter Parker says,
34:11I think that would have gone on to hit the stumps.
34:15Yes, there was no question there.
34:16The ball was a full end delivery,
34:18swung into the pads, and the head falling over,
34:22playing across the line,
34:23and as such, playing the penalty.
34:25As you can see, his head just falling over.
34:31Just hitting across the line, as you can see.
34:33Just look at where his head is,
34:34and where the delivery is.
34:35He's playing right across the line.
34:37There's no question that it was going to hit the stumps.
34:39So the UAE team lose their first wicket,
34:43due to, and there you are,
34:44that goes, up goes the dreaded finger.
34:47And he's on his way.
34:49Asha Dali out for seven, UAE 14 for one.
34:53Is Usman.
34:56Fahad Usman.
34:58Nine runs yesterday.
35:02He got both his collars in today.
35:11Up in the air.
35:12Someone's got to come under this one.
35:15Wicket keeper did.
35:17And almost in doing so,
35:19collided with three other people.
35:21Very good chance at one point,
35:22that four of them would converge at the same time.
35:24Zoyser certainly was charging down.
35:26Sangakkara saying, I'm the man with the gloves.
35:28And just as well that Zoyser didn't run into him.
35:30Somebody had to put his hand up and say, my catch.
35:32But just as well that Sri Lanka was taken in the end.
35:36Well, that was a very good catch indeed.
35:38But purely because Sangakkara was worried
35:40as to whether he would hit Zoyser.
35:42He sort of got his hands right under it at the right time,
35:45and it was a very good catch.
35:47And Fahad Usman goes for five,
35:48and the UAE team lose that second leg at 14.
35:52Dean Aslam is the new man in,
35:54as the Asia Cup starts to come to an end
35:56for so many players in the UAE.
35:58Once they're out now, unlikely to get another game.
36:00But they've done all right here.
36:02Certainly with the ball.
36:08Chance for a run out here.
36:09Down the field is in.
36:11And they ask.
36:12And up higher.
36:15Ian Hill says, no, he's made it.
36:19Wasn't a great dive either, I might add.
36:22This again is part of the inexperience.
36:25Because they don't play with each other so much.
36:28Not much of understanding there.
36:31Running between the wickets.
36:33And what really was an easy single.
36:38That's a good hit.
36:40This time he looked to hit straight.
36:44And he'll get a boundary for it.
36:48So Veera Rai, down the track very quickly.
36:53That was a clever shot.
36:56He charged late.
36:57Looked high on the ball.
36:59And played straight back.
37:04That's taken.
37:05Yes, second attempt.
37:08Again, looking to go over the top, Naeem Uddin.
37:13And at the substitute, field up.
37:16Marouf making no mistake.
37:20So UAE losing their third wicket.
37:22And trying to force the run rate.
37:25This wasn't a fuller delivery.
37:26He was trying to play it over Medan.
37:29But went straight to fielder.
37:30And good catch by Marouf in the end.
37:32On second attempt.
37:38Aslam Naeem Uddin goes for 12.
37:40It was like Michael Schumacher in his final pit stop.
37:46That lasted 10 seconds it seemed.
37:50That break.
37:56Oh, that's good start.
37:57That's a nice clean hit.
38:00And a welcome boundary.
38:06That's a perfect off-drive.
38:08A textbook shot.
38:10Slightly fuller delivery.
38:11Chandana's got two slips.
38:12The idea was to just pitch it.
38:14And this is the wicket.
38:16And second attempt.
38:18Comfortably taken.
38:2647 for 3.
38:33Almost got him.
38:39There was a clever bowling.
38:40Slightly flatter delivery.
38:43Just tempting a batsman to hit it over Medan and Medoff.
38:46And to block everything.
38:47Maybe try to pick his ball.
38:49I hope he should do it quickly.
38:50Because they need a lot of runs.
38:52And there he goes.
38:53This is comfortably played.
38:55And cleverly played.
38:56Playing with the spin.
39:00So he gets the boundary.
39:01That's the shot he was eyeing.
39:03Wasim said he was waiting for the ball with that extra bit of flight.
39:08Well, he got his opportunity here.
39:10His eyes lit up.
39:12Whack!
39:14Not that pass went on.
39:2267 for 3.
39:23Zoids are continuing.
39:24And in the commentary box,
39:25Harsha Bogle is with Michael Slater.
39:30Well, he's found a gap on the offside.
39:34Should look, I think, at 3.
39:39And get them quite easily.
39:42Given where the UAE were,
39:43the runs are coming at a fair clip now.
39:49He's just added Veera Rai.
39:52He was on 20.
39:54He's just added another 3.
39:55That's a little over one-sixth of his runs in one shot.
40:04Now the return inside edge.
40:05There was.
40:06You heard the second sound.
40:07And up went the umpire's finger.
40:10And Murali, like those stewards in the airlines,
40:12when they're just sticking over passengers,
40:14sticks over one more wicket in international cricket.
40:16It's 71 for 3.
40:17Quite bad.
40:18Bad.
40:19And Percy is looking a little more alive.
40:22Well, it's taken Murali until he's sixth over
40:24to get his first dismissal.
40:26Inside edge of the pattern.
40:27A simple catch.
40:28Chandana there at silly mid-off.
40:31One for nine now.
40:32The figures for Murali.
40:33And as I say,
40:34he's been working hard for that.
40:37Maksud Ahmed.
40:39He's gone for 13.
40:4071 for 4.
40:434 for 32 with the ball.
40:49And the reason he's here is
40:50they've just lost the wicket of Maksud Ahmed.
40:54Big inside edge off the pad.
40:56Chandana.
40:59And Murali says,
41:00one more.
41:01I love those eyes.
41:07Easy decision for Peter Parker,
41:09the umpire.
41:10And there would have been
41:11a definite two noises there.
41:18Well, I don't think the batsman realised
41:19there was a chance of a signal there.
41:20Non-striker called him.
41:22And he's looking for a third.
41:23It's Khurram.
41:26And get that quite easily.
41:29It's quite a babble out there sometimes.
41:30Stump microphones pick up everything.
41:34Signal with leg bays.
41:37He's got the edge.
41:38And again, shot.
41:39Oh, he's playing cat and mouse,
41:40isn't he, with the field there.
41:44That's a drop, I think, Harsha.
41:47Just carried, I think.
41:50Did.
41:51It would have been a good
41:52one-hand catch.
41:53Low to Chandana's right.
41:57Oh, that is straight enough,
41:58I thought.
41:59Or was it just going down left?
42:00Oh, it was just going down left.
42:01Oh, it was just going down left.
42:02Oh, it was just going down left.
42:03Oh, it was just going down left.
42:04Oh, it was just going down left.
42:05Oh, it was just going down left.
42:06Oh, it was just going down left.
42:08Did that do enough after hitting
42:09the deck?
42:10It seemed to be going straight
42:11through.
42:14Well, Peter Parker is an Australian
42:15umpire, and I've
42:17played when he's been
42:18officiating.
42:19He's a hard man to get an LBW
42:21out of.
42:22And he's,
42:25well, I'm thinking that's flicking
42:26leg, but that's probably not
42:27enough for Peter Parker.
42:29Well, it wasn't.
42:30It needed to be a little bit more
42:31adjacent.
42:33Malinga is a short guy.
42:34swingy action so it comes through low, no issue with the height, it's just that line.
42:47Well, how often does it happen, next ball you find the gap on the offside, and they'll take three.
42:52This is a nice shot actually.
42:53I was just going to say, Ranveer Rai really played that, the back foot drive is a difficult shot.
43:00Yes, now what was Peter Parker having to do to get the ball?
43:04It's pitched in line, it's just made a little movement from middle to leg.
43:08What he's got to judge is that the speed at which it's going, is it going to go on and hit leg?
43:12Or has it done enough to just miss leg?
43:16The reason we've gone back to this shot is, there's not so much to see the height, we know that's not an issue.
43:21He didn't make a forward press, so he's still on the crease.
43:25So the further back he is, it's not going to move too much more, it's probably hitting leg stump,
43:30but I can understand why Peter Parker gave it not out.
43:37Knocked him over!
43:38Knocked him over fast and straight, and Khurram Khan heard the sound behind him that every batsman dreads,
43:44and look at the smile.
43:46First one international wicket for Lasith Malinga.
43:50And a better length there for Malinga.
43:52He's probably bowled a little bit too short, but he pays dividends on these tracks to get it up.
43:59Khurram Khan in no man's land, beaten all ends up.
44:02He contributed with the ball, but unfortunately not with the bat, the skipper.
44:08And now UAE a 91 for 5.
44:13Asghar Ali Khan in, 14 yesterday.
44:18Coming out to join Ram Veera Rai,
44:20and together they're going to model for spectacle frames.
44:27And nice little deflection, it's gone away for 4.
44:30He does have a tendency to get on the pads to right handers.
44:34Yes, this is where the danger comes when someone like Malinga is bowling, particularly to the bowler.
44:39Soon as he strays down, even the little bit of a tickle runs it down the boundary.
44:45As soon as you get some bat here in business.
44:47It's in the air, then drops. It's the new one that he bowls.
44:50Well, there is an appeal. I think it was missing leg.
44:57It just sort of floats out the front of the hand. It's a really interesting ball.
45:01I saw him bowling it.
45:05It comes at the front. See the way the ball's spinning and spinning backwards.
45:09And look at it drop. He had no idea. The players knew.
45:14Sangakkara knew.
45:16Sangakkara knew. Bowled it really well.
45:23As I said, there you are. See the difference.
45:31It's a little bit more flight as well. It's a fuller length.
45:34It's a lot of effort.
45:37Down the ground, and he's got a wicket with it.
45:39I think he bowled it again, and it's hitting him in the stomach.
45:42And it's rebounded back. Oh, he's a champ.
45:46He really is a champ.
45:48And they get their sixth wicket.
45:50Yes, I think he was concentrating on the delivery.
45:52And I don't think he really was expecting the return to come as quickly as that.
45:58Firmly hit and right in the belly.
46:02But he clings on to it.
46:03So, Muralidharan picks up a wicket.
46:06And he's quite happy about it.
46:08That's the sixth wicket down for 98.
46:12Welcome back. Asim Saeed comes to the crease.
46:14Of course, he only bowled two overs.
46:16And then he ran into umpire Parker.
46:19He's just saying to him, look, when I'm running between the wickets, can you stay away from me?
46:22I've already done a right knee.
46:24Look, I'll need a runner.
46:26Croft going through New Zealand umpire many years ago as well.
46:30There's a chance, and he's gone. Another wicket.
46:33Well, it's all happening here in Dambulla.
46:37And Muralidharan picks up his third wicket.
46:39Yes, that did spin very quickly.
46:41And spun from pad to bat.
46:46And Dupul Chandana makes no mistake.
46:50Probably came through the bat of the glove, probably.
46:53And the umpire had no hesitation whatsoever.
46:56Because the batsman looked a little bit surprised.
46:59Sides gone for two. All big about no score. 98 for seven.
47:03Mohamed Takir has come to the crease here.
47:06And of course, yesterday, he made 55.
47:09And you shouldn't do that in this team.
47:11Because what happens? You get demoted. You go to number nine.
47:14You work that out, I can't.
47:16And he should be in the top four the way he played yesterday.
47:18And the reason why he's out there,
47:21is he was caught bat pad on the offside.
47:25And Muralidharan picked up his third wicket.
47:30It's amazing. Every time Muralidharan gets two wickets or more, here it is here, the bat pad.
47:35Inside edge, two sounds. You can hear it. Easy catch here for Dupul Chandana.
47:41And whenever this great man gets more than two wickets,
47:44they win 75% of the matches.
47:51Oh, it's a ripper. That's the ball that bowled Mike Gatting by Shane Warne a few years back.
47:56That's almost the ball of the century.
47:58What a delivery.
48:00Oh, this boy's got some skill.
48:04Absolute beauty by Dupul Chandana.
48:06Pitched outside leg stump and had Rai in all sorts of trouble.
48:09Rai really not much movement of the feet.
48:12But just look at this. Ripped across, hitting the off stump.
48:15And really, that really brings about memories of that Gatting dismissal by Shane Warne.
48:22So Roy's fighting innings comes to an eight for 39.
48:25It's 99 for eight.
48:27Yes, we've hit a Rai's opportunity of staying throughout that innings unbeaten.
48:32Brought to an end by Dupul Chandana.
48:36And it's real tough.
48:37And they all say, outside edge and that one goes away for four.
48:42Like the reaction time.
48:43If you don't keep your head still and don't back yourself,
48:46it's a real tough job in the slips.
48:51That fly flew at a height which was catchable in fact.
48:54But again, these are the catches one needs to take.
48:57Or just falling short.
49:00I think I was a bit harsh on that occasion on the field.
49:05113 for eight.
49:07Nine overs to go in this match.
49:10Chandana, or outside edge.
49:12Oh, what a catch!
49:13Brilliant catch.
49:14It's hit the gloves of Sangekara.
49:16And Dilshan takes an absolute ripper.
49:20Good reaction time.
49:22Lovely outside neck.
49:24Hits the deflection into the gloves or into the padding of Sangekara.
49:28And that's a great reaction.
49:30Watch this.
49:31Big turn.
49:32Nick, outside edge.
49:33Hits the webbing.
49:34And oh, that's good reflexes.
49:36Fantastic bowling.
49:37Good fielding.
49:40And now the ninth pick it goes.
49:42Mohamed Touker goes for five.
49:44113 for nine.
49:50Samir Zia comes in.
49:53The age of 22.
49:55Faced the bowling of Chandana.
49:57He's just picked up his third wicket.
49:59And just bowling beautifully.
50:01Did help him to get to the catch.
50:04A lot of fielders do also stand facing mid-on.
50:10And that makes it difficult.
50:11Oh, this is.
50:14This is a lucky boundary.
50:17For Ali.
50:21He got him to play away from him.
50:23He got him to play away from the body.
50:25Found the outside edge.
50:26It was a slower delivery.
50:28And runs away for four.
50:31Just watch the way that Malinga starts to run in.
50:33Jeff Thompson.
50:34Actually, the way he holds the ball.
50:36Holds it really close to his body.
50:37Very similar.
50:41Thompson was the same way.
50:42He used to run in like that.
50:47Yeah, except I think Jeff Thompson used to hold the ball in front of him with both hands.
50:52When he ran into ball.
50:53And then suddenly he would.
50:54As he ran in about a few yards.
50:56Then he would start pumping his arms to get.
50:59As he got close to the stumps.
51:02What we call going shopping.
51:03Just toss one up and see what he can get.
51:07That's the one.
51:08Up in the air.
51:09Couldn't have called it any better.
51:10There's a man getting under it.
51:11I think.
51:13And drops.
51:15Wow.
51:16Sponsored by the Teflon company.
51:18Nothing sticks here.
51:22Couldn't have called it any better.
51:23Set it up for him.
51:25High.
51:26Ball's gone into.
51:27Almost in the darkness.
51:28I didn't think he picked it up.
51:29Comes in.
51:32And oopsie.
51:33Wasn't a good effort, was it?
51:38Or some are.
51:43That's the one.
51:44It's got him.
51:45Bowled him.
51:46Tossed it up a little bit more.
51:4777 kilometers per hour.
51:49And it's knocked him over.
51:50He's got his fourth wicket.
51:52Upal Chandana.
51:53And this boy is back.
51:54He's a new kid on the block.
51:56He has got a lot of respect in the world.
51:59He can really bowl.
52:01Yes, this is a very, very good delivery.
52:03Too good, in fact, for the tail ender.
52:06Five wickets in each inning.
52:08Just a few days ago against Australia.
52:09The world champions.
52:11In test match.
52:13And here he's got four wickets in a one-day game.
52:16And he will be feeling on top of the world.
52:18As he prepares to take on the strong Indian batting lineup tomorrow.
52:22Knocking just the top of the off stump.
52:23Sangakkara.
52:24The wicket keeper.
52:26Lovely position.
52:27Gloves in the right position.
52:30To take the ball.
52:31And he knows that he doesn't need to come in.
52:33Because the ball is at the top of the stumps.
52:41Well, here we are.
52:42The UAE batting card here.
52:45And can you believe it?
52:46They've been bowled out for 123.
52:48And the only successful batsman.
52:50Is Veera Ray.
52:51With 39.
52:52A couple of other double.
52:55Digit there.
52:56Performances by a few batsmen.
52:5725 extras.
52:59And bowled out nearly in the 48th.
53:01Over.
53:02Sri Lankan bowling.
53:03Well, they were pretty impressive to me.
53:05To me today.
53:06Zoysa, 2 for 11.
53:08And Murali.
53:09Typical.
53:10Fantastic spell.
53:113 for 21.
53:12And Upul Chandana.
53:13Well, didn't he bowl really well.
53:154th for 22.
53:17Even the net run rate now.
53:19For India and Sri Lanka.
53:20Is identical.
53:21They've got the bonus point.
53:22They've got the same net run rate.
53:24Which makes it all pretty intriguing.
53:26When these two teams clash tomorrow.
53:31And the other group.
53:32Pakistan 6 points.
53:33Bangladesh 6 points as well.
53:34Now Hong Kong.
53:36Have to play against Pakistan.
53:38They played one and lost one.
53:39Bangladesh beat them.
53:41Now I'd like to ask.
53:42Mahila Jaiwad.
53:43Another captain of Sri Lanka today.
53:44To come up and first collect.
53:46A cheque of 3000 dollars.
53:483000 US dollars.
53:50And he can collect that cheque.
53:52From Mr. Mohammad Radha Abbas.
53:54The executive committee.
53:56Member of the Emirates Cricket Board.
53:59Now the man of the match.
54:01I mean no one really set the game.
54:03On fire today.
54:05But the commentators had a tough decision.
54:07And in the end they thought.
54:09Khurram Khan should get the man of the match.
54:11For a very good spell.
54:134 for 32.
54:14Against a strong Sri Lankan batting lineup.
54:15And he was instrumental in.
54:17Checking that Sri Lankan score.
54:19So Khurram if you can come up.
54:21First collect a.
54:23Cheque for 1000 dollars.
54:25From Mr. Chandra Babu.
54:27The vice president of.
54:28Lanka Indian Oil Company.
54:30And also a trophy.
