00:00I'm so thirsty.
00:10Day one is almost done, and we got to take it one day at a time.
00:14We did good today.
00:16We built a really good boma.
00:18We gathered up a whole lot of hay and grasses to sleep in.
00:23We gathered a lot of extra firewood.
00:26Let's have two fires, one outside and one inside.
00:29One fire on the outside will be like our security fire.
00:39Is that a hyena?
00:42I think that's a hyena.
00:42Yeah.
00:43I think it is, too.
00:44I think that's an elephant.
01:01We're hearing some animals outside.
01:03Elephants, hyenas.
01:06That's scary.
01:11You're getting chilly, are you?
01:13Yeah, are you?
01:14Oh, yeah.
01:19It's so cold.
01:23Oh, I'm so excited for day 91.
01:25I know.
01:28Last night was very cold.
01:31I could not get any sleep from just shivering all night.
01:37Look at my bruise here.
01:39Whoa.
01:40That's from shaking against the ground?
01:42No, shaking my legs.
01:44God, that's a bummer to hear.
01:45The grass seems to keep heat away better
01:47than it does keep heat in.
01:50I think later today, I might make a pod shelter out
01:54of a wattle and daub type thing.
01:57But my first thing is going to be shoes.
01:59So right now, we're making shoes out of buffalo hide
02:01that we harvested yesterday.
02:03The terrain out here is really rough.
02:06My feet, they definitely have a lot of little bits in them.
02:09We will need shoes to work better and be more efficient.
02:12You know, less pain, more work.
02:14I got flippy floppies.
02:16Those look pretty nice.
02:19At some point today, let's set traps.
02:21Yeah.
02:21Oh, yeah.
02:23We're getting food today.
02:30Oh, there we go.
02:31Look at this.
02:32Yeah.
02:33Knowing another animal's eating patterns,
02:36you can use to place your traps right.
02:39I'm going to set one up over there.
02:42This is a sandbushman style trap.
02:45So we set our spring pole.
02:47This is the engine for our trap.
02:49A trap has three parts, the engine, the action,
02:52and the trigger.
02:53A spring pole trap is a simple snare
02:55that uses the force from a bent stick
02:58to catch small to medium sized animals.
03:01OK, so it looks like this is an area
03:02where a lot of birds come here.
03:04So let's do our trap here.
03:07I know I'm going to catch something.
03:08Yes, we need to measure our string.
03:11We need to cut our string.
03:13This is slackline webbing.
03:14And what we have to do is take it apart.
03:18This is way too thick for my trap.
03:21So I'm going to get two traps out of this.
03:27Look at that.
03:28Isn't that pretty?
03:30Now comes the tricky part.
03:32It's like the human spider string.
03:37It's made up of web synthetic fibers,
03:39but it tangles really easily if you're not careful.
03:43These pieces of grass hold the string up.
03:47When the bird comes and puts its neck in there,
03:51it will get its neck caught in the noose.
03:56This is the amazing core that Elijah brought.
04:01Fine.
04:05I've wasted more time trying to get the core to dry
04:08than setting the trap.
04:12I'm just going to go get more.
04:15Now that our shoes are done and the traps are set,
04:17we need to deal with the cold.
04:19It was freezing last night.
04:21I just kept thinking about how much heat
04:23I was losing from the fire.
04:25Just all the heat just going right up.
04:27I was like, we've got to remedy that.
04:30This is going to be a pretty warm structure.
04:34There's going to be a cob rocket stove here.
04:38There's going to be a sleeping quarter here
04:40and a sleeping quarter there.
04:41There's going to be an arched hut.
04:45Over-unders, over-unders, and eventually it
04:48has a decent amount of integrity,
04:51enough to apply grass and mud.
04:54This is a wattle and daub technique
04:56where branches and sticks create the structure,
04:58and then we cover it with mud and grass for insulation.
05:02It also holds it all together.
05:03Looks like it's working because I'm already hot in here.
05:08It's going to have a little rocket stove inside of it
05:10made of cob.
05:11Cob is an ancient building method
05:13that combines clay, sand, straw, and water
05:16to create a fireproof mixture that
05:18can be formed into structures.
05:20Use an elephant dung.
05:21Make some of the best cob ever.
05:23We'll form that cob into a super sweet, high-efficiency oven.
05:32We take a little bit of this just pure mud
05:35and slip it over the top.
05:38The coals are going to go right here.
05:40And we just have clay and the ground radiating heat to us,
05:44and the roof radiating heat back to us.
05:47Two engineers in Africa.
05:49Yeah.
05:49Yeah, you're a software engineer.
05:52That's so cool.
05:53And you're like a civil engineer.
05:56Now that Monica and I have spent more time together
05:58out in the bush, we're starting to coordinate more,
06:00and it's good.
06:05Eli, look, it's an elephant.
06:08That's the first elephant I've ever.
06:10So close.
06:12Wow.
06:13There's two.
06:14Oh my god.
06:17That is so beautiful.
06:18Isn't it?
06:18Yeah.
06:20It's day four.
06:21It's been three and a half days since I've eaten.
06:25We've set up more than a dozen traps
06:27scattered all over the area.
06:29And I check them twice a day.
06:31The bait's gone on this trap.
06:33I am super hopeful that we can get some food in our traps.
06:38Wow.
06:39Oh my god.
06:41That is awesome.
06:43This is really Africa.
06:46That's an elephant skull.
06:47Chuck that at a bird, flock of birds.
06:51Definitely taking this back.
06:53Hard to tell what happened here.
06:54I'm guessing die of natural causes,
06:56and then other animals that were in the area.
07:00I'm not sure.
07:00I'm not sure.
07:01I'm not sure.
07:02I'm not sure.
07:03I'm not sure.
07:04I'm not sure.
07:04I'm not sure.
07:05I'm not sure.
07:06I'm not sure.
07:06I'm not sure.
07:07I'm not sure.
07:07I'm not sure.
07:08Other animals came and just had a feast.
07:15I've never fasted before, so this is the longest
07:17I've been without eating.
07:20I feel like I have no energy.
07:22Elijah has a lot of energy still, so that's good.
07:26That's good.
07:28I hope those birds really love this one.
07:31Monica would be super stoked to have food.
07:34So would I.
07:38Checking the last two traps for the day.
07:41I probably walked four miles already today.
07:45And we got a yellow-billed hornbill.
07:52Oh, hey, baby.
07:53I'm so sorry.
08:00Thank you so much.
08:01Thank you for your life.
08:06It's intense.
08:08Monica's going to be so stoked.
08:14Check it out.
08:15Check it out.
08:18Dinner.
08:20Yes.
08:21Yeah, man.
08:22Oh, my gosh.
08:24Wow.
08:24It's just awesome.
08:25Let's eat dinner out here.
08:26And every win we have, it definitely
08:30makes us closer as a team.
08:32Let's get this thing going.
08:34Let's do it.
08:35We just caught our first meal.
08:37Yellow-billed hornbill.
08:39Yeah.
08:44What the was that?
08:55Do you see what it is?
08:56Uh-uh.
08:58Oh, my god.
09:06What the f**k?
09:14Oh, my god.
09:16Get.
09:17Get.
09:18Did that work?
09:19Yeah, I think so.
09:21They're leaving.
09:22That was intense.
