00:00Duck, the great western engine, worked hard in the yard at the big station.
00:07Sometimes he pulled coaches.
00:10Sometimes he pushed freight cars.
00:12But whatever the work, Duck got the job done without fuss.
00:18One day, Duck was resting in the shed when Sir Topham Hatt arrived.
00:23Your work in the yard has been good.
00:25Would you like to have a branch line for your own?
00:28Yes, please sir, replied Duck.
00:31So Duck took charge of his new branch line.
00:35The responsibility delighted him.
00:40The line runs along the coast by sandy beaches
00:43till it meets a port where big ships come in.
00:48Duck enjoyed exploring every curve and corner of the line.
00:54Sea breezes swirled his smoke high into the air
00:57and his green paint glistened in the sunlight.
01:00This is just like being on holiday, he puffed.
01:03Well, you know what they say, laughed his driver,
01:06a change is as good as a rest.
01:12Soon, Duck was busier than ever.
01:21Sir Topham Hatt was building a new station at the port.
01:26Duck pulled the heavy freight cars wherever they were needed.
01:30Bertie looked after Duck's passengers and the other engines helped too,
01:34but the work took a long time.
01:40Noise and dust filled the air.
01:45Don't worry, whistled Toby, the station's nearly finished.
01:50And on time too, said Duck thankfully.
01:56Duck felt his responsibility deeply and talked endlessly about it.
02:01You don't understand, Donald, how much Sir Topham Hatt relies on me.
02:05Ach aye, muttered Donald sleepily.
02:09I'm Great Western and I...
02:11Quack, quack, quack.
02:12What?
02:13Ye heard, quack, quack ye go.
02:15Sounds like ye'd an egg laid.
02:17Now whist and let an engine sleep.
02:20Quack yourself, said Duck indignantly.
02:24Later, he spoke to his driver.
02:27Donald says I quack as if I'd laid an egg.
02:31Quack, do you, pondered his fireman.
02:34He whispered something to Duck and his driver.
02:38They were going to play a joke on Donald and pay him back for teasing Duck.
02:44The engines were busy for the rest of the day and nothing more was said.
02:57Not even a quack.
03:00But when at last Donald was asleep, Duck's driver and fireman popped something into his water tank.
03:08Next morning when Donald stopped for water, he found that he had an unexpected passenger aboard.
03:14A small white duckling popped out of his water tank.
03:18Now do, who's behind this, laughed Donald.
03:21The duckling was tame.
03:24She shared the fireman's sandwiches.
03:30And rode in the tender.
03:33The other engines enjoyed teasing Donald about her.
03:39Presently she grew tired of traveling and hopped off at a station.
03:43And there she stayed.
03:48That night Donald's driver and fireman got busy.
03:52And in the morning when Duck's crew arrived to look him over, they laughed and laughed.
03:57Look, Duck, look what's under your bunker.
04:00It's a nest box with an egg in it.
04:03Donald opened a sleepy eye.
04:05Well, well, well, you must have laid in the night, Duck, all unbeknownst.
04:11Then Duck laughed too.
04:13You win, Donald, it'd take a clever engine to get the better of you.
04:18There's a pond near the duckling's station.
04:20Here she often swims and welcomes the trains as they pass by.
04:24The station master calls her Dilly, but to everyone else she is always Donald's Duck.
