Behind the Scenes Compilation from the movie F9 (2021).

F9 (also known as F9: The Fast Saga or Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga) is a 2021 American action film directed by Justin Lin, who co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Casey, based on a story by Lin, Alfredo Botello and Casey. It is the ninth main instalment and the overall tenth instalment in the Fast & Furious franchise. It stars Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, alongside an ensemble cast including, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Michael Rooker, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron. In the film, Toretto and his team set out to stop a world-shattering plot involving his younger brother, Jakob (Cena).

With a ninth film planned since 2014, Lin was confirmed as director in October 2017, returning to the franchise for the first time since directing Fast & Furious 6 (2013). F9 is the first film in the franchise since 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) to not be written by Chris Morgan. Dwayne Johnson, who appeared in the previous four films, was announced to return in April 2017 but confirmed his absence in January 2019. The rest of the cast was finalized with the addition of Cena six months later. Brian Tyler returned to compose the score. Principal photography began in June 2019 and lasted until November, with filming locations including London, Edinburgh, Tbilisi, Los Angeles, and Thailand.

F9 was originally scheduled for release by Universal Pictures on April 19, 2019, but was delayed several times, first due to the release of the spin-off film Hobbs & Shaw (2019) and the planned release of No Time to Die (2021), and then the COVID-19 pandemic. It first was released in South Korea on May 19, 2021; it was released in the United Kingdom on June 24, and then released in the United States on June 25. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for the stunts, Lin's direction, and the performances of the cast, while it was criticized for its unrealistic action sequences, plot, and revision of tropes. It set several pandemic box office records and grossed over $726 million worldwide, becoming the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2021. It was followed by Fast X in 2023.

00:06♪♪
00:11Every time we embark on making a Fast and Furious film...
00:15You're the best background I have ever seen, Scott!
00:19I, on a personal level, think of it as a miracle,
00:24and I am grateful and blessed,
00:26but I also feel desire to make that audience
00:32that supported us for so long proud.
00:34I know you don't carpool.
00:37So what's up?
00:39♪♪
00:42I always feel like when a sequel happens,
00:45it's not by accident, it's something that is earned.
00:47If you make a movie that connects with people,
00:49you get the privilege of making another film.
00:52On this one, we really wanted to push each other.
00:54We didn't want to compromise.
00:55We didn't want to just kind of cap ourselves.
00:57Just the action itself, the logistics size is unparalleled.
01:01And when you go, are you guys ever gonna...?
01:04Leave it to Justin, and you're gonna get there.
01:07You get to the set, and you just don't know what to expect.
01:11We're gonna go out.
01:12Might as well go out on top of the world.
01:14Punch it!
01:15♪♪
01:18It's really crazy that it all still feels brand new.
01:22We have 100% reinvented ourselves.
01:27And that's what we seem to do each and every time.
01:31We're in outer space!
01:33This is definitely the highlight of my career.
01:36Justin has such a vision.
01:38The scope is so massive.
01:41♪♪
01:44Strategically, it makes for a huge challenge.
01:47Shooting sometimes 3 units, 3 parts of the world
01:50at the exact same time takes coordination, a lot of trust.
01:53Yeah!
01:54♪♪
01:57Oh!
01:58Yeah!
01:59Justin's ability to relay information,
02:01he's an amazing expert technical director
02:03who's been doing this for a long time.
02:05I'm always the most fond of working with men and women like that.
02:08I call him on the phone from set.
02:09I send him screenshots.
02:10I look at the edit.
02:11I look at his previs, his storyboards.
02:13I've been studying his style for a long time.
02:15This is an amazing group of people.
02:17I mean, they're at the top of their profession.
02:19I found great comfort in just all of the people
02:24that have been a part of the franchise for so long.
02:26♪♪
02:28Getting all of that energy from our family
02:31makes what we put on camera mean that much more.
02:35♪♪
02:37My ass is on fire!
02:39♪♪
02:41I love everything about our writers, our producers,
02:44our stuntmen, our directors,
02:47everyone behind the scenes,
02:48you deserve just as much, if not more, of a round of applause.
02:51♪♪
02:53As us actors that are on screen.
02:55When you think you just can't top yourself anymore...
03:00♪♪
03:02You figure out a way.
03:04♪♪
03:12Oh!
03:15It started as this tiny film about street racing.
03:19♪♪
03:22And because of the love of the characters,
03:25it's emerged a much bigger story
03:28about family being broken apart...
03:31♪♪
03:33By a secret that's been buried from the past
03:36and having to reconcile that.
03:38Aah!
03:40♪♪
03:43Imagine an unknown brother to the Toretto family.
03:47Who in the world could embody that character?
03:50He is such an incredible talent.
03:53Wait till you see. Wait till you see.
03:55I couldn't ask for a better endorsement.
03:57♪♪
03:59Every family, I don't care how perfect you are,
04:01we all have our secrets.
04:02Even the Toretto's have secrets.
04:04We spent a lot of time trying to figure out
04:06this idea that there would be a middle brother
04:08who was involved in Jack Toretto's death.
04:11It was just an immediate knowing
04:13that John had the soul to personify
04:16this lost and forgotten Toretto.
04:19I was one of the young people
04:20captivated by the first installment,
04:22and I've watched ever since.
04:24My invite, so to say, into the Fast family
04:28was rather abrupt.
04:29I got a call literally 35 minutes later.
04:32I was in Vin Diesel's gym talking to Vin
04:35about the possibility of being invited into the Fast family.
04:38When you are in the room,
04:39when these two individuals are shooting these intense scenes,
04:42you can feel the energy.
04:43You know, the only good thing to come from Dad dying,
04:46if he hadn't, I'd have spent my entire life in your shadow.
04:49Now, you spend the rest of yours living in mine.
04:51We haven't ever seen Toretto versus Toretto.
04:54It's this unresolved part of his life
04:57that prevents him from becoming a true father.
05:00To quote Dame Helen Mirren,
05:02there's nothing more dangerous than a family at odds.
05:05And you see that in the ferocity
05:07our characters go at each other,
05:09that longing for that brotherhood.
05:11I was like, he's gonna be able to make the world believe
05:15that he's actually a Toretto.
05:16Him and Vin on set for the first day of filming,
05:19you know, there was a couple takes.
05:21It felt like some s*** was really about to happen on set.
05:24We needed somebody who we believed could take Dom down.
05:29A similar physical build, intelligent,
05:32really brings your own persona to screen.
05:36I said to him, to play as Toretto,
05:38you're gonna have to be prepared to go to some dark places.
05:41And I believed him when he said, whatever it takes.
05:47We can do this instead.
05:49Just to be around the environment has been awesome,
05:52and Vin has been one of a kind.
05:54I came into it with the mindset of,
05:56you are surrounded by really, really gifted folks
05:59who have done two decades worth of establishing a legacy.
06:03He is never afraid to be vulnerable.
06:06He's never afraid to get knocked down.
06:08It made my job more fulfilling
06:11to be able to have a partner like that.
06:13So many options, so many options.
06:16I love John Cena.
06:18I used to watch wrestling quite a bit.
06:20The nostalgia of him in WWE is very real in my heart.
06:25He's like the perfect brother for Dom,
06:27and it's been cool getting to know him.
06:29I like his vibe, I like what he represents.
06:33It's very hard to create a villain,
06:35and it's very hard to create a villain
06:37that feels really formidable.
06:39Each of these films really is that much stronger
06:42when we have a foe that we believe
06:45could break that family down.
06:47It was very important to me to truly have this antagonist
06:50that's gonna be a huge obstacle for our characters.
06:52And for the record, we're the good guys.
06:54I'm Luke freaking Skywalker.
06:56Otto's the money man behind all this, right?
06:58Jacob's the brains, and Sue is his muscle.
07:00Otto is the beneficiary, basically, of a kingdom.
07:03He wants to change the world, I think, for the better.
07:06I'm not so sure he has any idea what the better might mean.
07:09I'm pretty certain that if you gave world power to Otto,
07:12you wouldn't like what came out on the other side.
07:14Lieutenant Sue, he's obviously from a military background,
07:17and he's Otto's friend and main security.
07:22I really loved that they made Sue big and punishing.
07:27It was a pleasure to get my ass kicked by Sue,
07:31because he's this big guy with tattoos all over his face.
07:35When I spoke to Justin about the character,
07:37it was so nice that I was able to not put a comedy spin on him,
07:40but almost have him as a carefree psychopath.
07:47Your whole life, you pushed yourself
07:50to be faster than Dom, smarter than Dom.
07:53Do you hate him enough it keeps you up at night?
08:00To be able to work with Charlize and bring Cypher...
08:03Money well spent.
08:04She just brings not only the sense of professionalism,
08:07but her level of awareness when she showed up.
08:09She could tell we were still fresh and we were still having a great time,
08:12and she was able to feed off that energy.
08:14What's so fun about writing for a character like Cypher
08:17is she just knows exactly where to stick the knife and how to twist.
08:20I bet all you ever wanted was a hug.
08:23You read my psyche, though. Good for you.
08:25Charlize is not as good as you all think she is.
08:28She's far better than that.
08:29I was just looking at her in amazement of what she does
08:33and how good she is.
08:35This would be the moment where the villain has an unexpected setback.
08:39Charlize Theron is just extremely precise, meticulous.
08:42She keeps on working with it, keeps on seeing new nuances of it,
08:46and it's such an inspiration to me.
08:47I think, actually, she frightened John in two ways.
08:50You know, I look at her and I feel creeped out.
08:53It's sort of turned on at the same time.
08:55She is one step ahead of everybody.
08:58I think John felt that.
09:00He definitely seemed shook.
09:02Adding your brother Dom to the mix, you don't have a chance.
09:17There's heat, there's sunburn, there's sunstroke.
09:20Please get your factor 50 on, or 70 if you're Scottish like me.
09:25Jungle hazards, the hazards of the jungle.
09:27Monsoon showers, falling fruits, poisonous plants, everyone.
09:31Snakes, scorpions, bugs and mosquitoes.
09:33They carry dengue fever at this time of year.
09:35These palm fronds can easily just go up,
09:37so just be very careful with that, guys.
09:39Thank you very much, ladies and gents.
09:41Let's talk about the first shot, please.
09:43Well done, everyone. Come on.
09:47On Fast Five, one of the main reasons they brought me on
09:51was because I do things practical.
10:07You really can't film in a jungle, a real jungle,
10:10because there's no way to get a car through it.
10:12So we had to find things that looked like jungle
10:14that were private land, and most of them were palm oil plantations.
10:18Because it's palm trees, the ground is like clay.
10:22We did a bunch of tests and ended up having to make our own roads.
10:26The weather, the humidity.
10:28We were actually there during monsoon season.
10:30I mean, there were just layers and layers and layers.
10:32They'd collect palm fronds and throw them down on the roads we had made
10:36and more gravel, and we'd rake it out, run over it with a couple of cars
10:40to try to get the water out of it so we could actually film
10:42without getting mud all over the cars.
10:44It's not just the ideas, the cars, the special effects,
10:47it's the cameras, it's the people, the helicopters, the permits,
10:51and you have a small window of time to get it in.
10:54Everything has to go right.
10:58Part of the fun of making these films is picking the cars.
11:06I always say that these cars are extensions of our characters.
11:09If the cars were lined up, you would know which car is for which character.
11:13That was the most challenging location we've ever shot at.
11:17Obviously, we got a charger.
11:19You can't do one of these films without one of those.
11:21This is definitely not your average charger.
11:25We've used the modern charger in many of these films,
11:27and I wanted to change it up.
11:28Doing a wide-body version makes the car much more muscular,
11:31having those slight fender flares, and then we made our own hoods
11:34for that scoop, bronze stripes, bronze Hellcat logo on the side.
11:37I think the result was pretty awesome.
11:40We did get into some situations where the terrain was so rough
11:43that we had to put a charger body on an off-road race truck.
11:55Thailand was probably more explosions for a sequence than we've done on any film.
11:59Effects had dug big holes in the ground and put big mortars with,
12:03like, 10 pounds of naphthalene and then a bunch of moss and dirt over the top of that.
12:08Huge explosions, probably 25-, 30-foot fireballs every time.
12:13The Marauder, it's built on the chassis of a Unimog,
12:18but a lot of that was chopped away to allow for this enormous armored body.
12:22Y'all want to make jokes about me not making practical decisions?
12:25This is as practical as it gets.
12:28This is six times before they start adding all of the reinforcement
12:31for our driver's safety, of course.
12:33He's in a tank, inside of a tank.
12:43I like that truck. I think it's crazy.
12:45I was trying to figure out a way to FedEx it back to L.A.,
12:49and then they tell them I took FedNumber, don't add up, you know, whatever.
12:55Justin has a habit of laughing at my pain.
12:58So you don't want me to do this, Justin, in the middle of the scene?
13:01When it comes to those gimbals, all of the special effects stuff,
13:05I mean, these guys are just uberly talented, man.
13:08Like, where do y'all come up with this stuff?
13:10I just hope to make the gimbals look cool,
13:12because the gimbals make me feel cool.
13:17Vince, you know that was the s***.
13:22Letty, obviously, was on a motorcycle.
13:24We had to make sure that everything was done exactly just right.
13:28Letty's definitely not fearful of death.
13:33When people don't put the primordial fear of death as the main thing,
13:38you get the X Games.
13:41You know what I mean?
13:45The bike, such a Letty thing.
13:47That element of taking yourself to the edge,
13:50really finding out what stuff you're capable of,
13:53and what you're made of, and pushing the envelope of survival.
13:59Letty's not Letty unless she's facing her fears head-on.
14:06I'm about to go head-to-head with a four-door Hellcat Charger,
14:09and ironically placed in the driver's seat of a Ford Mustang,
14:12a brilliant one.
14:14That's another car that was definitely Justin's idea.
14:16It's a great rivalry that goes back 50 years between Ford and Dodge.
14:20We took Polaris 1000 side-by-sides,
14:22put carbon-fiber Mustang bodies over the Polaris.
14:25So that's how we got these great shots going through terrain,
14:27and you're like, wow, that's pretty intense.
14:31I know the car community is going to get a nice chuckle out of it,
14:33because I have a bit of a history with Ford,
14:36but I think it's really cool that I get to drive a Mustang,
14:38to be surrounded by automotive culture every single day.
14:49Well, that was new.
14:51You got to understand, action movies,
14:53you really are stepping into a male-dominated sport.
14:57Fast and Furious is a big part of my evolution.
15:00I've had the greatest opportunity to have a voice
15:03really shed light using the platform of this franchise.
15:07It took a long time, but in this,
15:09there was a lot more attention to that female voice.
15:12You get involved here, you put everything you have at risk.
15:15Filmmaking has evolved in how we portray characters.
15:18I felt like it was important for us
15:20to at least be able to acknowledge the past
15:22in order to define our future.
15:25On the day Anna and Jordana and Michelle and I were all on set,
15:30for the first time together, I was like,
15:32ah, this is amazing!
15:35To have, like, four kind of badass women
15:38on the set of Fast and Furious,
15:40it was like a dream come true.
15:42To have, like, four kind of badass women just together,
15:46it was so exciting to see that rise of a female voice
15:50within the series.
15:52Natalie, she has a lot more hands-on action.
15:55Anna's character is really, really kick-ass.
15:58Also, Mia's back!
16:01I'm so happy!
16:03When I found out I was coming back,
16:05I was like, I can't wait, get me in there.
16:07I was always in scenes with Michelle,
16:09we've always promoted things together,
16:11we got to interact, and I adore her,
16:13and I adore how she keeps on evolving and changing.
16:17She knows her stuff.
16:19I also have been to thank in a major way
16:21because he definitely wanted to bring the family back together.
16:24Jordana never left in my mind.
16:26People that have learned the shorthand
16:28that the audience have come to know
16:30makes Fast special.
16:32Come on, Mia, let's go!
16:34Coming! Wait up!
16:36Hurry up! God damn it!
16:38We're part of the original crew.
16:40It's just refreshing to have a moment with her
16:43and have her be part of the action.
16:45Oh!
16:47Boom!
16:49Bam!
16:51Cool, yeah.
16:53Yeah!
16:55The fight that's in Tokyo was one of the first ideas
16:58when I was developing the script.
17:00Get down!
17:05Three fights happening all at once in this tiny apartment.
17:10Uh!
17:12All right, rehearsing, here we go.
17:14Our three heroines are taking on seven elite guards.
17:17Go!
17:19We actually designed the apartment for the fight.
17:21This is made of foam, neoprene.
17:23Everything's built that way
17:25so we can create a lot of havoc and impact.
17:27Mia, it's her first time actually doing some action.
17:29Can't be in a Fast & Furious movie and not do that stuff.
17:32That's just not fair.
17:34But in this one, I get a lot of action,
17:36which was so fun and so invigorating.
17:39Oh!
17:44She grabs a lot of objects, she uses the surroundings.
17:47Tag teams with Letty to do, like, the finish moves.
17:57They taught it to me like a dance.
17:59It was weeks and weeks of prep.
18:02Uh!
18:06Whereas Michelle can just pick it up like that.
18:08OK, got it.
18:10I did get some hands-on with the fight.
18:12Michelle's extraordinary.
18:14High energy, high impact, very straightforward in all her moves.
18:18She's also very aware of where the camera is as an action performer.
18:22So I gotta get up, get up into position.
18:25As we all know, Letty's more of a brawler,
18:28so we bring that back into the table on this one.
18:31There it is.
18:33In some crazy, sadistic way, I really enjoyed it.
18:36Go!
18:45On top of that, we have a new character named Elle.
18:52What a badass!
18:54That was my first impression,
18:56and second impression, and third impression.
19:03So Anna, when she came, we had no idea what her background was.
19:07Our first warm-up, she literally popped into the splits,
19:10and we were like, no way!
19:13The stunt training was amazing.
19:15They let me practice so much.
19:17I think I was at the gym for a really long time,
19:19and they were like, when is she gonna leave?
19:22Anna's a new character, so we gave her an interesting style,
19:25lucha gun libre.
19:27It's a mix of Mexican wrestling with gun work and baton work.
19:30She hands him up, and clocks him,
19:32and then comes the big trickery.
19:37Working with Michelle and Jordana has been truly inspiring.
19:41I feel so proud.
19:43Like a mama or an auntie or something.
19:45Action!
19:48Aah!
19:51Cut, cut!
19:56Alarm!
20:00Let's move in. Move, move, move!
20:02On the left, go!
20:04Nice necklace, Queenie.
20:06Diamonds and emeralds never looked so good.
20:09Now, Dame what?
20:11Dame You're Incredible?
20:13No, Dame Helen.
20:15Helen!
20:19I believe that when somebody is a part of this franchise,
20:23they're always a part of this franchise.
20:25And so it's very important for me to find ways and opportunities
20:30to revisit their characters
20:32and to allow their characters to play in the greater mythology.
20:35I just love Helen Mirren.
20:37And I love working with her.
20:40I feel very blessed and honoured
20:42that I have the opportunity to work with her.
20:45I wish I could explain the bond between Helen Mirren and Vin Diesel.
20:49It makes no sense, but it's spectacular.
20:53Brown bread dead, septic tank yank.
20:56You want to cock me, you got it!
20:59Jump cut to...
21:01four years ago?
21:03Helen Mirren comes up to me and says,
21:06I've been telling everyone I want to work with you
21:09and I want to be in The Fast and the Furious.
21:12And I said, well, we already have the script
21:15and we're already going into production.
21:17She said, you're the producer!
21:19Get it together!
21:21Help me, Helen!
21:23As one does when one's had a couple of glasses of wine
21:27and one sees one of one's heroes across the room.
21:30I went and I was, you know, rather bold.
21:33And I would have completely understood if I said,
21:36sorry, Helen, it's not the sort of thing for you, really.
21:42But the opposite happened.
21:44I'm a very happy part of the extended family of Fast and Furious.
21:48I feel like you should make a left, because what happens is...
21:51Oh, I see. Make a left.
21:53Left, and could you come around to the right?
21:55It was very clear to me when I met Helen Mirren
21:58that she was not only someone that is universal,
22:01but also what I realised was that she loved this franchise.
22:05You do the driving, I'll cut you in for 15%.
22:08Queenie is called Queenie cos I had an Auntie Queenie.
22:11My mum was one of 14 children and Queenie.
22:14She was the 13th of 14 children.
22:16So I called my character Queenie in honour of my Aunt Queenie.
22:20She's the matriarch of quite a powerful family.
22:23There is a little bit of tongue-in-cheek about it,
22:26we don't want to take it too seriously.
22:28I always try to do my own driving, if I can, in a movie.
22:31It's very fun, because very often the roads are being closed for you.
22:35She always had the wish to drive,
22:37cos she's a very good driver, by the way.
22:39That was just so much fun.
22:41Here we go, pictures up.
22:43You're coming.
22:48Action, action, action.
22:53It's not actually me.
22:55It's not actually me.
22:57I did my own sort of stunt driving.
22:59I love it, I love the process.
23:08What's that right there?
23:10That's the Queen spot, y'all.
23:15When I show up on set sometimes, I realise, you know,
23:18we've closed down some of the most exclusive streets
23:21or neighbourhoods in the world to be able to shoot that scene.
23:25Everyone's going to come this side.
23:27You've got to come another five feet back.
23:35I remember going on the scout, going,
23:37OK, let's get it in the background.
23:39Let's see how much we can get.
23:41Well, I was amazed that they were allowed to shoot the way they did
23:45and shoot this incredible sequence.
23:47It's quite a juxtaposition.
23:50Last time I arrived at the palace, I arrived in a taxi.
23:56I said, hey, what's that building back there?
23:58And Frasier, my first AD, said, hey, that's where the Queen's house,
24:01that's where the Queen lives.
24:03Being from a small town in Texas, I was like, you've got to be kidding me.
24:06And he said, yeah, they're going to let us film here.
24:08So I kind of hit a home run on that one. I got really lucky.
24:14Get a hair break for me, would you, darling?
24:20It was the perfect car for what we needed to do.
24:23It was fast enough and ornery enough
24:25to get backwards and sideways when we needed to get.
24:28OK, here we go. Stand by, guys.
24:30And three, two, one, action.
24:43I'm not going to show you the whole thing.
24:45I'm going to show you the whole thing.
24:48I'm not going to show you my boots
24:50because I want them to be first seen on screen
24:53because they are so spectacular.
24:55It was very intimidating to find myself driving Vin Diesel.
24:59Oh, my God. She does it so brilliantly.
25:02I had to keep saying, am I doing it right?
25:04No, the boys have nothing on her.
25:07The boys have nothing on her.
25:09Roll camera.
25:12LAUGHTER
25:16Now get out.
25:22Chemistry's a very strange thing, isn't it?
25:24He's someone that I dearly love and respect
25:27and feel comfortable with,
25:29and I think maybe it is because we're very different from each other
25:33and I'm very, very lucky to have him a little bit in my life.
25:36Thank you, darling.
25:38Thank you so much for making this so fun and so exciting
25:42and kind of a new world to be a part of,
25:44and I'm just loving it, loving every minute.
25:46When are they going to learn?
25:53Some birds can't be caged.
25:58Ready and action.
26:00Coming back on F9, it's a constant interaction of inspiration.
26:04Ozuna came in and auditioned.
26:08I trust myself, I trust the role.
26:10I studied a lot, I studied all week,
26:12so I came well prepared,
26:14and I took it as part of that,
26:16and it was like a family.
26:18Santos.
26:20It was great to be able to just call someone
26:22and they're like, we're in.
26:26I remember getting a call saying, hey, Cardi B is a fan,
26:29and I thought, OK, great.
26:31We're going to be able to do kind of the expected cameo,
26:34but we're going to turn it on its head.
26:36But we're going to turn it on its head.
26:42What's up?
26:44Que lo que?
26:46Yusa's really that bitch,
26:48and she's very confident.
26:50I was really nervous,
26:52but I'm like, it's freaking fast and furious.
26:56Get me there, put me on a plane.
26:59I'm getting serious.
27:02When I was doing this character,
27:04I felt like so gangster, and I love it.
27:06Like, I'm a real-life gangster,
27:08but this just made me feel like...
27:14And so bossed up.
27:16Dímelo, papi.
27:18Ew, I hate saying that.
27:22No, I really do.
27:24What would you say instead?
27:26Because, you know, I don't really flirt in Spanish.
27:29I don't really, you know what I'm saying?
27:32Like, it's like...
27:34Well done, Neysa.
27:36Please, if it wasn't for you,
27:38I'd still be stealing gas in the D.R.
27:40You know Vin Diesel, he always played, like,
27:42this very serious guy.
27:46Oh, I'm scared.
27:48But he's just so nice, so dope.
27:50He makes you feel so comfortable.
27:52That's pretty cool. I like that.
27:54By the way, I really am proud of you.
27:58It ain't in the movie, it's real life.
28:02Action!
28:04Oh!
28:06Oh!
28:08Nice.
28:10Congrats.
28:12Oh, yeah.
28:16Francis Nagano,
28:18I knew that he had knocked someone so hard
28:20that their head,
28:22the back of their head hit their back.
28:24And there's, like, footage of that,
28:26getting that incoming call
28:28that he wanted to come and hang out.
28:30I grew up in Africa,
28:32watching Fast and Furious.
28:34I was at school, and very young,
28:36and I was amazed.
28:38I've been following since the first one.
28:40And today, I'm playing a role.
28:42It took me time to believe it.
28:44I was 10 years old, I was this tall.
28:46Really?
28:48Yeah. I was like, I'm gonna be 6'8".
28:50I'm gonna be 6'8".
28:52All of the stunt team,
28:54who do a great job taking care of everybody,
28:56and, you know,
28:58the actors, everybody,
29:00they're really worried,
29:02because Francis is so strong
29:04that he was gonna accidentally
29:06knock some out.
29:08Okay. Cut.
29:10But luckily, it didn't happen,
29:12but it's still, you know,
29:14I could see why his hook is so vicious.
29:22It always starts with
29:24a simple message from Ben
29:26via Instagram, telling me,
29:28see you soon.
29:30And everybody is constantly
29:32looking for new faces
29:34in the movie.
29:38To see Don Omar, I was just like,
29:40oh my God, oh my God, I know him,
29:42I love him, and it was just like hype.
29:44It is pleasing, just the fact that
29:46they're giving light to the Latin community.
29:48It just makes me smile, it just makes me
29:50feel proud.
29:52Me being part of this
29:54is an opportunity to see my friends again.
29:56This respect, this admiration,
29:58it is different.
30:00I'm really proud of that.
30:10This s*** is hot.
30:12There ain't no music video for y'all.
30:16The brother you're looking for
30:18is from an old life.
30:20This is my world.
30:23Justin being an amazing director,
30:25an amazing action director who knows what he wants,
30:27I just said, how above reality are we going?
30:29Is it reality plus 10%?
30:31Or is it reality plus 80%?
30:35He just smiled and said,
30:37we're gonna have a lot of play in that.
30:41So there was actually three things going on all at once.
30:43We were in the midst of doing this chase.
30:47While we were in the midst of doing another chase.
30:49In the midst of doing another fight.
30:52Background in the ancient city of Edinburgh.
30:54I loved Edinburgh, it's such an amazing city.
30:56The architecture, the landscape,
30:58the people are really friendly and fun.
31:00I mean, I think we probably annoyed them
31:02with all the road closures.
31:04But, we had such a warm welcome.
31:10So he goes out.
31:12One banana, two banana.
31:16If he's still on four wheels, have him exit as well.
31:18Because I need to blow him out as well.
31:20That's the heel, that's the end of my foot.
31:24Okay, that one was my fault.
31:26Natalie knows how to drive.
31:30I do know how to drive, I just don't have a license.
31:32But yeah, so Ramsay and I have that in common.
31:37It's very funny that the first time she's like driving
31:39is this commercial vehicle.
31:42That's huge.
31:44It's not how you want your first experience
31:46of driving to be, because potentially
31:48it could be really traumatizing.
31:50Hell yeah.
31:52I have so much fun with the scenes with myself and Ramsay.
32:00We've had some great fights.
32:02There's something about if you get into it with a sibling,
32:04it is a hundred times more intense.
32:10That's the thing about the brother fight.
32:12There's no rules.
32:14Let's get three, two, one.
32:19Nice.
32:21As committed as we are, when it gets ugly.
32:23Awesome.
32:25It gets pretty brutal.
32:27I'll tell you, it's like two huge Mack trucks
32:29going towards one another.
32:34Brothers will fight dirty,
32:36but it's accepted because it's your brother.
32:40It is pretty vicious, like punching through pieces of wall.
32:43Vin is awesome to work with.
32:45It's almost like second nature to him.
32:47He knows where camera is
32:49and how to play for camera.
32:51We'll show him two moves, and he'll be like, got it.
32:57In John, I have a partner
32:59in wanting to make something significant.
33:01We have a professional wrestler,
33:03which offers up the best-case scenario
33:05for someone who will retain choreography.
33:11He's so professional, and he comes on and just turns it on.
33:13Let's get ready to shoot.
33:15Is that all right?
33:17The way they choreograph is extremely interesting.
33:19Much of my physical action is improv in the WWE,
33:21so it's not strictly choreographed,
33:23but here it is.
33:29There's also a lot of thought and psychology
33:31put into the hand-to-hand combat,
33:33and as a physical storyteller myself,
33:35that's what I enjoy most.
33:37Yeah!
33:43Cut!
33:45Jacob thinks he is smarter, faster,
33:47better than Dom,
33:49and finds out that he's still outmatched.
33:51No matter how good John Cena is in this movie,
33:53you can't beat your big bro.
34:01Vehicle etiquette, guys. Approach from the front.
34:03Approach from the front so those drivers can see you.
34:07What I love about the crew is that
34:09nothing is too daunting for them.
34:11You're good. Lovely.
34:13What you gotta know about Tbilisi is all the streets are super wide,
34:15beautiful buildings, a lot of straight roads,
34:17but a lot of room to work.
34:19There was some prep that we had to do,
34:21traffic lights that were too low,
34:23a couple of spots going onto the sidewalks.
34:25Really look at the runs, where we were going.
34:27We had to take out some signs, take out parking meters.
34:29Really a pleasure working with Tbilisi Council.
34:31Anything we wanted, they would just say,
34:33okay, and the next day it was done.
34:38We'll let the bus get going.
34:40We'll just have to figure out how far over he has to be
34:42so your tail end doesn't hit him.
34:48This mid-engine thing is a Frankenstein's monster.
34:53When people want to know what it sounds like, I say,
34:55Toretto.
34:59That mid-engine charger,
35:01it honors the original kind of shape,
35:03but it brings something new.
35:05I tend to love Venn's cars the most.
35:07I just think it's just a badass car, visually.
35:10As far as I know, no one's ever built a mid-engine charger.
35:16I still get so much joy in seeing exotic,
35:19very rare cars in environments that we're not used to.
35:22It's kind of combining old and new technology.
35:25It's a Dodge Hellcat engine,
35:27installed like a vintage GT40,
35:29transaxle, five-speed.
35:32Knock-off wheels, custom-built by HRE.
35:34In my mind, it's the ultimate Toretto car.
35:36They've lowered it, they've widened it,
35:38they put the engine in the middle.
35:40What was it ever meant to be in the first place?
35:42Who knows?
35:46You go back to that flashback
35:48where you see Dom as a kid working on the charger.
35:50Then we fast-forward, here Dom is driving
35:52what I think is the coolest charger ever.
35:54So yeah, there's definitely a theme going on here.
35:57I'm so happy the car is a muscle car.
36:00I was like, gangsta!
36:04The Nova just seemed like it fit her style,
36:06you know, just all about function.
36:08Sometimes I just want to see an old-school,
36:10true muscle car, a 60s hot rod.
36:12The nice thing about a Nova is they're not
36:14outrageously expensive.
36:16They're an easy car to make go fast.
36:18And we didn't go crazy, we didn't put
36:20a lot of time and effort into it.
36:22We didn't put a lot of time and effort
36:24into making it go fast.
36:26And we didn't go crazy, we didn't put LS motors in it.
36:28We just kind of kept them old-school.
36:30American racing wheels, big block,
36:32four-speed, the basics.
36:34That's exactly what Letty's car is.
36:38Muscle cars are great.
36:44I wanted something that was going to be impenetrable.
36:46And then we went and just built it.
36:48It's just huge, right?
36:50These vehicles were, you know, 14-foot high.
36:52I mean, they're enormous.
36:54Certainly the biggest thing I've ever built.
36:56I named it the Mother Trucker.
36:58It's got double front steering
37:00and two power axles at the rear.
37:02Handling it, Mike Ryan,
37:04who's done every big vehicle,
37:06he couldn't even see driving this thing.
37:08We had cameras on it
37:10because it was so tall.
37:14I didn't realize how big it was.
37:16It was easy to kind of describe it
37:18and to take it for granted,
37:20but when you see it, the tires alone...
37:22It just keeps going.
37:24It's like the Hulk on wheels,
37:26and it's smashing through the streets.
37:28It doesn't matter what you throw at it,
37:30cars or trucks, it's just going to keep going.
37:36It's surreal to see something so huge.
37:38Look at this!
37:40Can you guys see that?
37:46Dumb! I can't get to you!
37:48It was an idea
37:50that was kind of just in my head
37:52to use a magnetic technology.
37:54The magnet gag
37:56just opened up so many cool ideas.
38:00Coming up with something that hasn't been done before
38:02is so rare.
38:04FX had all of the washers,
38:06drivers, everything else on big air tubes.
38:082,500 pounds of pressure,
38:10a piece of paper would just hit a button.
38:12Everything we do with timing,
38:14with marks, is very critical,
38:16especially when you put this much time
38:18and money into something.
38:22Try to work out
38:24every detail you can
38:26to give you the best chance
38:28at a 100% great shot.
38:30Otherwise, why do it?
38:34Doing stuff that's tricky.
38:44People want to be entertained.
38:46You want to make it spectacular,
38:48but working with Justin,
38:50he makes you think about everything
38:52and it brings the best out of you.
39:00We really wanted to push each other.
39:02Let's shoot it again right away.
39:06That's what I'm always looking for.
39:08He's an amazing director.
39:10I give the crew
39:12all the credit for making it happen.
39:20If you can't tell,
39:22we're on a Fast and Furious set.
39:30Yeah!
39:32We would go out there and basically
39:34burn the tread off the tires
39:36until sparks started flying.
39:38We'd go out there and try it again.
39:40And I got paid to do it.
39:42I was 24 years old, man.
39:44I really was so happy
39:46to be able to figure a way
39:48to bring Sean and Twinkie and Earl
39:50back in 2005.
39:52They were just kids,
39:54and seeing how much they've learned
39:56since the last time that we were together,
39:58it's definitely one of the highlights for me.
40:00Sean, Earl, and Twinkie,
40:02when we meet them in F9,
40:04in many ways they're the same
40:06Please don't tell me you're watching
40:08a YouTube video on space rockets for tips.
40:10It's pretty special just to get back together
40:12and reminisce about all the memories,
40:14experiences we had
40:16on Tokyo Drift.
40:18Just wanted to have fun, drive cars,
40:20and now I'm a father now.
40:22I wasn't a father, what, 14 years ago?
40:24That sounds crazy, saying 14 years ago.
40:26I actually went back watching behind-the-scenes footage
40:28of us from Justin calling Cut
40:30and me and Luke going back to the trailer
40:32playing Madden to us traveling to Tokyo.
40:34Look, man, this car right here is like the Mona Lisa
40:36of the drift world.
40:38They taught us how to drift.
40:40They took us out at Irwindale Speedway.
40:42We had the drift champions of the world,
40:44Reece Midland.
40:46He taught me. He was my son's driver.
40:50It's awesome to be able to tear those cars up.
40:52I remember I slammed
40:54one of the 350 or 370Z
40:56into the wall.
40:58I was really paranoid.
41:00I was like, oh no, I'm going to get kicked out of here.
41:02There was a guy that was handling the cars,
41:04and he goes, don't worry, it's not your car.
41:06You don't have to pay for it.
41:08In fact, one of my favorite memories
41:10was going to karaoke with you
41:12and Sonny Chiba.
41:14We ended up at 5 a.m. singing Japanese songs
41:16that I had no idea what I was singing.
41:18He fed us fugu fish then.
41:20Yeah, that's right.
41:22It's this fish that's poisonous.
41:24If you don't prepare it a certain way, it'll kill you.
41:26He goes, I'm going to take you to dinner.
41:28He's feeding us fugu fish.
41:30We're going to survive this dinner.
41:32It's also cool to reunite
41:34after all these years and see
41:36how these guys turned into wonderful men.
41:38They're fathers now.
41:40Our conversation is way more
41:42mature because it used to be about video games
41:44and Nikes, right?
41:48It's kind of like back together with a team.
41:50There's really no acting going on
41:52because we're genuinely happy to see each other.
42:00Please subscribe.
42:02Make us proud.
42:04Okay, everybody
42:06look this way.
42:08Okay, and
42:10this way.
42:12Thank you very much.
42:14When I think about the 16 plus years
42:16that I've been a part of this franchise
42:18and how far we've come, it feels like being
42:20a part of history.
42:22It's the gift
42:24that keeps on giving. I say it all the time.
42:26We are a true family where
42:28everybody spends time with each other.
42:30All of our kids know each other. We invite each other
42:32to barbecues and birthdays
42:34and I think that's why the on-screen
42:36chemistry is so phenomenal
42:38and continues to touch the hearts of millions
42:40and millions of people around the world.
42:42Whatever's on you,
42:44it's on us.
42:46Everybody's gone through everything together.
42:48It's a deeper, more enduring relationship.
42:50With the cast and the crew,
42:52our kids are now growing up and my son
42:54now, he's 10, and his Uncle Vin,
42:56I always loved exploring
42:58and kind of developing and creating this
43:00family in a very untraditional way.
43:02Back in the day when we were
43:04all younger, we all had our own things going on
43:06and we would, you know, go off to
43:08something, somewhere, and now
43:10we all realize how special
43:12this is that we want to cherish it.
43:14Dom's my brother, but you will always be my sister.
43:16It's exciting, it's action,
43:18it's about love and family
43:20and friendship and loyalty and
43:22all of these things that it doesn't matter
43:24what your background is, what your struggles
43:26are, we can all relate to those things.
43:28The craziness of what's
43:30happening around us is insane,
43:32but then you look at the people.
43:34I love that there's that belief in each other.
43:40It really comes down to heart.
43:42And it's kind of cool,
43:44you know?
43:46Art suddenly makes
43:48changes in the world.
43:50I feel really lucky and blessed
43:52to be a part of that, and I just became
43:54a person that was invited to the table.
43:56And it was pretty special.
43:58So Justin, you want some Celine Dion?
44:00For the people that's
44:02been rocking with us for this many years,
44:04thank you.
44:08Thank you for giving us a shot at entertaining you.
44:10What a privilege
44:12that is to go on these journeys
44:14with people
44:16that I trust, that
44:18I enjoy working with.
44:21It's all one voice,
44:23and that's something that I take a lot of pride in.
44:25I feel so blessed
44:27that we were able to pull it off.
44:29And I truly, truly, truly,
44:31truly, truly mean it when I say
44:34we hope to make you proud.
44:50Fire!
45:20Fire!
