00:00For this week, Dr. G on the spot is focusing on if you change your mind
00:05about the sterilization, what options do you have?
00:16Effectively, the vasectomy is a segregation of the transmissions of the sperm
00:23from the testicle to the outside world.
00:26When the vasectomy is done, which is a segmental excision of that vas,
00:31it can be joined back together, obviously depending on the skill of the surgeon
00:37and also possibility the length of the segment that was excised.
00:42So, what exactly is a reversal of vasectomy?
00:46Reversal of vasectomy is also called vasovasostomy
00:51and this is a procedure that can be done anytime after the vasectomy has been carried out.
00:57So, some people change their mind within one week after the procedure,
01:01some people change their mind after 20 years of the vasectomy.
01:05In fact, one of the determining factor is also how long after the vasectomy.
01:12For example, 10 years and below, the success rate is significantly better,
01:18so the patency rate is as high as 90% and the baby live birth rate is as good as 50%.
01:27However, when the occlusion is prolonged for more than 20 years,
01:32the patency rate is reduced significantly to about 70%
01:37and also the live birth baby is as low as about 40%.
01:43So, vasovasostomy itself, although may not be 100% successful,
01:50but another method will actually help you to create more babies in the future
01:55is called the ART procedure, which is Artificial Reproductive Technology.
02:01Essentially, the surgeon will retrieve the sperm directly from the testicle
02:07either using MISA or TESE.
02:10MISA is Microscopic Epidermal Sperm Aspiration or TESE is Testicular Exploration and Sperm Extraction.
02:20Sometimes, surgeon may also use a needle directly into the testicle
02:26called Percutaneous Sperm Aspiration or PISA in order to extract the sperm
02:32so they create the test tube baby for you.
02:35In the month of October, we're going to be focusing on something quite different.
02:39We're going to be focusing on how HPV can affect men.
02:45So, if you would like to know how HPV causes genital wart,
02:49then stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
