00:00You
00:30Welcome to Minecraft Live 2024. We're coming to you from the home of Minecraft here at our office in Stockholm, Sweden.
00:45We've got a fun show for you with the latest and greatest things coming to the world of Minecraft.
01:01A brand new never before seen game drop inside info directly from our team and a sneak peek into the wider world of Minecraft, including some exclusive insight into our upcoming movie.
01:13Everything we'll show you for vanilla Minecraft is coming very soon. In fact, you'll be playing it in the next few months.
01:21The community has always been at the heart of Minecraft. Your creativity and passion for 15 years and counting inspires us to create both inside and outside of our games.
01:33Thinking back to those early days, even the official Minecraft game trailer was made by the community.
01:40When I first started playing Minecraft in 2010, this wonderful community made video was one of the first things I ever saw about the game.
01:50Whenever I rewatch it, I think back to my first moments playing and how this game has changed so many lives, including mine.
02:00Let's go to a place where everything is made of blocks. Where the only limit is your imagination.
02:09Let's go wherever you want to go. Climb the tallest mountains. Venture down to the darkest caves.
02:19Build anything you want. Day or night. Rain or shine. Because this is the most significant sandbox you'll ever set foot in.
02:29Build a majestic castle. Invent a new machine. Or take a ride on a roller coaster. Play with friends. Build your own little community.
02:39Protect yourself with the strongest armor that you can craft. And fight off the dangers of the night.
02:46No one can tell you what you can or cannot do. With no rules to follow. This adventure, it's up to you.
03:00That trailer really brings back memories. We've come so far and yet Minecraft is still the same game we all love.
03:07We have now celebrated Minecraft's 15-year anniversary, and it's been an incredible year.
03:13A few highlights are the Tricky Trials update, Marketplace Summer Celebration, and MD Cup Championships.
03:22I started working on Minecraft and Minecraft-related projects nearly 14 years ago.
03:27At first, I was coding back when Mojang had a small apartment-turned-office here in Stockholm.
03:32Now I'm Mojang's Chief Creative Officer, and I try my best to help all our teams to create the greatest Minecraft experiences.
03:42The world of Minecraft is still growing in many ways, and you might wonder how it's possible for us to explore so many stories and interpretations of the universe.
03:51The truth is that you, our community, have been doing this since the beginning.
03:55Every player has their own story to tell and their own take on what Minecraft is.
04:00We take inspiration from that creativity when we explore new things.
04:04Minecraft Dungeons told the story of the Arch-Illager, and Minecraft Legends went back in time and let you lead mobs into battle with a piglin invasion.
04:12Today, you'll hear about some of the upcoming ways we're telling stories beyond our games, and exploring more interpretations of what Minecraft can be.
04:21Soon, we'll get to see the world of Minecraft brought to life on the big screen thanks to our upcoming film, a Minecraft movie.
04:28I had the opportunity to travel all the way to New Zealand and finally see the production firsthand.
04:34It's one example of how Minecraft is growing in entertainment, but at the heart of it all is still the game.
04:41The teams working on Minecraft are ambitious and want to create the best tools and technologies that will help us and creators to make more Minecraft stories.
04:50The core vanilla gameplay team did a tremendous job with Trigger Trials.
04:54Now we're planning to have a change of pace in terms of releasing new features.
04:58Earlier this year, they released the Armored Paws drop, which included Armadillo and new wolf variants.
05:05And the ambition is to continue to drop more feature nuggets more frequently.
05:09These more regular updates will replace the yearly summer update that you might be used to.
05:14This will also allow us to consider long-term improvements to ensure we can build Minecraft for the long run.
05:19When we expand into new areas, our primary creative principle is that it starts with vanilla.
05:25Because, just as the trailer you saw, that is what brought us here and it's still our favorite game for 15 years and counting.
05:32You can rely on us that our dedication will last another 15 and more.
05:44Hello everyone, I hope you all are well.
05:57As Jens mentioned, we in the core game team are working on drops.
06:01And today we are excited to show you two of them that we have been working on.
06:05And both of them will release within the next few months.
06:09A little bit later in the show, we will, for the first time, show you a completely new drop that adds a new biome with its own unique mood.
06:19But before that, we would love to start with our next drop.
06:22It's a combination of two things many of you have been wishing for.
06:26It's hardcore mode in Bedrock and bundles.
06:29And we call it Bundles of Bravery.
06:32And we have two amazing, clever team members that will show more.
06:45Hardcore mode is your traditional Minecraft experience, except with one life to live.
06:53Playing hardcore mode brings back that feeling of the first time that you play Minecraft.
06:58Because everything is new, everything is dangerous.
07:01But now your entire playthrough, everything is dangerous all the time.
07:05And that adds to the level of excitement that you have for everything that you do.
07:10Everything is new, everything is scarier.
07:13Because you can't afford to make any of those mistakes.
07:16In Java and in Bedrock, we have a very different menu experience for getting into hardcore mode.
07:22So in Bedrock, we have this nice little toggle that you flip that says, I want to play this in hardcore mode.
07:27But my favorite part is that in the corner where you have your little image of your world that you're about to join,
07:32a little outline appears and then the hardcore heart starts to pulse there.
07:36So you really know that you're going to have a very difficult experience in front of you.
07:40When you've been playing Minecraft for a long time, you get into a routine.
07:44And you do things on the regular that are just very normal for you.
07:48When you play hardcore mode, you have to break that routine and create an entirely new way to play
07:54that is maybe a little bit more risk averse, unless you want to play very often, very short bursts.
08:00But your experience is always going to be unique and very different
08:04because that one life to live changes the entire way that you play.
08:11We're super excited for you to try hardcore mode.
08:14And maybe you'll feel a little safer if you're able to bring those extra items with you in the new bundles.
08:24This is Matthew, take one.
08:29We added bundles to help people pack more into their inventory.
08:33So in old versions of Minecraft, if you were digging a tunnel,
08:36you might end up with 64 blocks of cobblestone and it fits into one inventory slot.
08:40Today, if you dig that same tunnel, you're going to get a lot of different blocks.
08:44Even if it's only 64 blocks in total, they're going to take a lot of inventory slots because they don't stack together.
08:50A bundle lets you pack those items together, reclaim that space,
08:54and have an inventory that feels like it did back in the early days of Minecraft.
09:00When we first came up with the idea for the bundle,
09:03we wanted to make sure it was actually going to be useful.
09:06So we watched a whole lot of streams of players playing survival Minecraft.
09:10We waited until they opened their inventory and then we took a screenshot.
09:14Then we went through all these screenshots and we said,
09:17What could this player do if they had a bundle?
09:20What we found is that most people would be able to free up eight inventory slots or more,
09:25which gave them a lot of room to carry more of anything they wanted.
09:31The main advantage of using a bundle is that you can go out for longer.
09:36If you're going out on your first adventure, you can pack things into a bundle
09:40and have a lot more space in your inventory before it fills up and you have to come home again.
09:45There are a lot of creative ways to use bundles as well.
09:48You could create a gift for your friend,
09:51dye a bundle in their favorite color and give it to them with their favorite items inside.
09:55Bundles are also an interesting roleplay item or could be used in storytelling.
10:00The idea of having a little bag is just kind of inherently cute and fun.
10:05Villager News
10:12Breaking news! We interrupt this Minecraft Live broadcast for a special report.
10:16There's been a monster sighting! Here's villager number nine.
10:19Thanks, number five. Villager number 15 here says there's a monstrous creature right there in those woods.
10:25So, number 15, have you ever lied on the news before?
10:28What? I'm not lying. I was with my group and the monster and got all of them. They're all gone.
10:32Maybe they just don't like you, you know, because of all the lies.
10:35What? That's ridiculous. I'm not lying.
10:36All right, to put an end to these clear fabrications,
10:38we're going to go into the spooky forest and prove there's no monster.
10:42All right, let's go.
10:43Oh, you're heading into the woods.
10:48Very well, but I must warn you.
10:52Those who enter there never return here.
11:00What? Why not?
11:01Oh, no, this is just the entrance, darling. The exit's over there.
11:08All right, come on. Everybody keep their eyes peeled for monsters.
11:11Of course, we know there's no such thing.
11:13What about zombies?
11:14Skeletons?
11:15Ghosts?
11:16A dragon?
11:17It didn't look like any of those.
11:18All right, what did it look like?
11:20Uh, I couldn't see it clearly. It was behind a tree.
11:23Hmm, convenient.
11:27Hey, wait. Does anyone feel like we're being watched?
11:30I hope so. We need the ratings.
11:33Did anybody hear that?
11:34Hear what?
11:35The creaking.
11:36I'd say it was more of a crunching.
11:38Hey, wait. Where's villager number 31?
11:40Is that XP?
11:42Ah, the monster got him.
11:44Oh, no, it's happening again.
11:48No, no, that could have been anybody's XP.
11:50And emeralds. And sign that says,
11:52I'm villager number 31, help me, I'm being attacked by a monster.
11:56It's circumstantial at best. Let's move on.
11:59Hmm, yeah, that does make sense.
12:01All right, well, I'm convinced.
12:06I thought he said there were monsters.
12:08Yeah, where's the monster?
12:09All right, we've been here for a while and we haven't seen any monsters.
12:13Yeah, we should make our way back.
12:15Uh, which way was that again?
12:17Oh, no, we're lost.
12:18What?
12:19No, does anyone know the way back?
12:21Villager number 47 will know.
12:22He's a cartographer.
12:23Where's villager number 47?
12:25Hey, someone left a map in all this XP.
12:27Maybe there is a monster.
12:29There's no monster. Who said that?
12:34There is a monster. It's going to get us.
12:37Villager number 5, it appears that a wave of hysteria has afflicted the group.
12:42I stand by the notion that there are no monsters in the woods.
12:46But the cameraman and I are going to run away now for unrelated reasons.
12:50Goodbye.
12:52Huh? Hey, what's behind that tree?
12:58Oh, no, villager number 9!
13:00Villager number 9, are you there?
13:02Is anybody there?
13:09Hmm, I guess we'll never know what caused this tragic chain of events.
13:13But it definitely wasn't a monster.
13:15Oh, well, sorry for interrupting the show.
13:18Now back to Minecraft Live!
13:27Hmm.
13:36It's been a long time since I first announced our Minecraft movie.
13:40We've taken our time to assemble an incredible team
13:43and to create an original, fun-filled take on the Minecraft universe.
13:47From us at Mojang, our partners at Warner Bros. and Legendary,
13:52our talented director, Jared Hess,
13:54and some amazing content creators,
13:56we're bringing Minecraft to the big screen in a way you've never seen before.
14:01All with the goal of authentically capturing the spirit of Minecraft
14:06by working with people who play, love, and care about the game as much as you do.
14:11Let's hear from some fellow Minecrafters
14:14and take a closer look at how we made this film.
14:18Let's do it! And action!
14:22I'm Torve, Creative Director of Entertainment for Mojang.
14:25I'm Jared Hess, the director of a Minecraft movie.
14:29We're super excited to share some exclusive information about how we made this movie.
14:33Man, to be able to celebrate that fun, amazing, creative spirit that is Minecraft,
14:38it was just like a dream come true.
14:40We first started talking about making a movie what is over a decade ago.
14:45We really wanted to honor the world.
14:47And then spending like three months in New Zealand on set,
14:51we've really enjoyed the journey.
14:53We thought a lot about what kind of movie to do,
14:56and we chose live action because it's not something that's been seen before on this scale.
15:02Creators have made such amazing stories and short films and content in the animation space,
15:10and it was like, oh, this is the chance for us doing a film to do something different.
15:14And also kind of wish fulfillment, because I always wondered,
15:17what would happen if I would wake up inside the Minecraft world?
15:20How would I survive, and would I survive at all?
15:24The idea of being human beings that are actually going into this cubic dimension of the overworld,
15:31and how those characters are engaging in that space,
15:35and it just seemed like so much fun.
15:38Everything is cubic. Everything is blocks.
15:41We had just an absolutely amazing crew of talented artists.
15:46You know, our production designer, Grant Major,
15:48he was the production designer for the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.
15:51We also are working with Weta,
15:54and they all had their own personal relationship with the game.
15:57So when they started designing and drawing, it just really popped.
16:04What I like about what you did is that the choices you make,
16:07they support the story and the character.
16:09Part of that is because, just like every Minecrafter, every player,
16:13they bring their own original story to what they're doing.
16:16It's very intentional that this movie is called a Minecraft movie,
16:21as opposed to the Minecraft movie.
16:23We have an ensemble of characters,
16:25these unlikely misfits that get thrown into this adventure into the overworld,
16:30and we experience a lot of that through one of our characters named Henry,
16:33who's a young man going through a tough time in his life,
16:36and he literally has to create to survive.
16:39You know, I saw him on the page, and I was like reading the script,
16:42like, oh wait, he's like a young kid hanging in his room,
16:45like building and making stuff.
16:47But that's what he is. He's like a maker, and he's a creator.
16:50Such a big part of Minecraft has been the creator community and modding.
16:55So we thought that Henry, the Henry character,
16:57could represent basically the modder,
17:00the person who takes the vanilla game and tweaks it and adjusts it,
17:04and then he comes into the Minecraft world, and he meets Steve,
17:07and Steve knows everything about vanilla Minecraft.
17:10We've always said that Steve isn't really a character.
17:14Like, Steve is what you make him, right?
17:16Yeah.
17:17And we've all embodied Steve and been Steve and done different things.
17:21So our Steve in this movie is Jack Black.
17:25He's such a huge fan of the game.
17:28After a long day of shooting, he was up until the wee hours of the night playing.
17:33It was so funny because he would show up and be like,
17:35oh dude, there's no day we've got to try this thing, dude.
17:37You know, some build that he did or something gnarly that happened to him,
17:40he just loves the idea that he's able to bring his version of Steve to life.
17:45Play from the top one more time.
17:47Figuring out crafting was super fun.
17:49When the game came out, there wasn't even, like, there wasn't a recipe book,
17:51and people were like, wait, what happens if I put these things like that?
17:55When Garrett's character and these new characters come into the world,
17:57they don't know the recipes, they don't know what to do.
17:59The Jason Momoa character, Garrett,
18:01is a guy that was like a world championship video gamer in the late 1980s,
18:06and he kind of peaked then, but he's still stuck in the past.
18:10He's got a little bit of a rest of development.
18:12He's holding on to that former glory.
18:14We want to show you a short scene that shows Henry and Garrett and Steve.
18:19Steve is kind of demonstrating his skills,
18:21and then Garrett tries to demonstrate his skills.
18:25Yeah, and Garrett's the noob.
18:30This is a crafting table.
18:34Here's how it works.
18:36You place these elements in different patterns, and...
18:43You got yourself a sweet blade.
18:48You want to see a blade?
18:50I'll show you a blade.
18:53Yeah!
18:56Hammer.
19:04That's okay, bud. Buckets are useful here.
19:07When we were designing crafting and talking about what should it look like,
19:11we basically started at the crafting table itself.
19:15We looked at the crafting table, we looked at the end game texture,
19:18and it has this super pixelated picture of a hammer and a saw there on the side.
19:23So obviously that was built into the real-world crafting table.
19:27So we got this hammer, and we figured we'd honor the 3x3 grid perfectly,
19:32and thought it would be cool and kind of fun and gratifying
19:35to just give it a massive whack and then have things appear.
19:39Remember when we were trying to figure out the size of the block that you break itself?
19:44When Steve holds a block, it's like this big,
19:47and there we actually found out that going one meter by one meter,
19:51which is like three feet by three feet, is actually too big.
19:55So we scaled it down, and it scales like 60 centimeters cubed,
19:59which is two feet by two feet by two feet.
20:02And then in the background and maybe in the foreground,
20:05we sometimes scaled it down a little bit,
20:07but we would always honor powers of two, because we're programmers,
20:10and we like powers of two.
20:12We had to honor what you experience in the game,
20:16but also make it work for human scale,
20:19for different characters that are manipulating the environment and the world
20:23and throwing blocks, and make it be practical for that,
20:27but still feel natural and organic to what people experience in the game
20:31and feel authentic in that way.
20:36This has been so much fun, talking about the movie,
20:39everything that's gone into making it, all of the ideas, the point of view,
20:42and we cannot wait to share this movie with the world.
20:45Yeah, super excited.
20:46See you in the overworld.
20:47Yeah.
20:50Minecraft Movies
20:56The filmmakers are still hard at work on a Minecraft movie
21:00and collaborating closely with us at Mojang,
21:03as well as listening to the community,
21:05to continue to shape and craft the film in a way that's fresh and new,
21:09but still authentic to the spirit of the game.
21:12Look for more exciting updates soon.
21:20Minecraft Adventure
21:28Do you want to adventure through Minecraft biomes in real life?
21:31You may have your chance with Minecraft Experience Villager Rescue,
21:35our first real-world immersive experience
21:38where you'll get to journey through a Minecraft adventure in real life.
21:42Let's take a behind-the-scenes look before it debuts in Dallas this October
21:46and spawning in cities near you in the future.
21:52The premise of Minecraft Experience,
21:55first thing is authenticity.
21:57Our goal is to make sure that it is truly authentic for all of you folks.
22:01The second thing is defining a new lens
22:05from which you can interact with the game, with the IP, with the brand.
22:10This is the story of a village attacked by zombies
22:13and it's your quest to go out and save them.
22:16We have 17-foot projection walls that we can interact with throughout,
22:20which allows us to do things like fight our mobs,
22:23chop down trees, collect those resources.
22:26Everything that you do in the game, only this time you've stepped inside it.
22:31This is an experience where you're going to see, feel, and hear
22:35what it's like to be in Minecraft.
22:38World Premiere is in Dallas-Fort Worth,
22:41and then we'll see where we go.
22:43Head to the website and tell us where you want to see the Minecraft Experience.
22:51And now it's time to reveal our completely new job,
22:54releasing in a few months.
22:56The team has been really excited about the idea of adding a new biome,
23:00and we created one with its own unique mood and identity.
23:05During daytime it's quiet,
23:08like almost serene in the new Pale Garden.
23:16While you might feel calm walking around in this forest,
23:20there's also an eerie mood.
23:24Something isn't quite right.
23:27Then, when darkness falls,
23:30you indeed feel another side of this place.
23:33Like the hanging moss shifts from being pretty to really spooky,
23:37and you realize that you're not alone.
23:40There's something lurking in the shadows.
23:46So, everything about this biome feels unfamiliar,
23:50and this is by design.
23:52We want you to feel a bit curious about what's going on.
23:56What we needed for the biome is to have low visibility,
23:59and we've created the pale hanging moss for this.
24:02This really inhibits how much you can see and how far you can see,
24:06but you can still walk through it.
24:08So, you're traversing through the forest,
24:11and you're trying to find everything,
24:13but you don't know what will be behind the hanging moss.
24:16So, we wanted to create a place where you can walk through it,
24:20and you don't know what's behind the hanging moss.
24:23But you don't know what will be behind the hanging moss.
24:26Yeah, it gives you kind of a strange feeling when you enter.
24:30It's unnaturally quiet,
24:33and a feeling of something weird is going on here.
24:44I really like the ambience of the new biome.
24:47It invokes really those eerie and spooky feelings.
24:51Yes, eerie indeed.
24:53And, it turns out, there actually is something lurking in the shadows.
24:58The creaking.
25:04It's our first tree-like creature,
25:06and it's almost like it's camouflaging in the pale garden.
25:09And when it's dark at night,
25:11it's kind of hard to see it except those emissive eyes.
25:15Yeah, and it also interacts with those trees, which is super fun.
25:18Yeah, there's a special new block that it has a connection to.
25:24When you approach the creaking,
25:27you can actually realize that it doesn't take any damage,
25:30and when you try to hit it, it points you somewhere in the canopies.
25:33That's where, basically, the creaking heart is,
25:36and that's what controls the mob.
25:39One of the main themes of the pale garden and its inhabitants
25:44is that there's a lot of contrast from the rest of the world.
25:48So, when we made the creaking,
25:50we also wanted it to feel unfamiliar and different from other mobs,
25:54which is why we made it more asymmetric,
25:57to really go on this point of being different from everything else.
26:04The creaking doesn't exist on its own.
26:07It's more like a puppet of the new block, the creaking heart.
26:12So, the creaking heart and its creaking puppet
26:15really comes with a new combat challenge or combat mechanic,
26:19both in the way that you need to destroy the heart block
26:23to actually kill the creaking,
26:26and also, of course, that the creaking only moves when you look away.
26:30So, don't blink.
26:33I really like the sandboxiness of the creaking heart.
26:36So, if I use Silk Touch, you obtain it,
26:38and then you can place it anywhere you want in the Minecraft world.
26:41So, if you want to be as evil as the creaking heart itself,
26:45you can place it and make your friends really terrified.
26:52To embrace the quietness of Minecraft,
26:55we added ambient sounds for this biome that only plays during the night,
27:00that comes from the blocks that surround you,
27:04that will make an even more creepier experience for the player.
27:09To do that, you need to play with the silence
27:12and the contrast of the silence and the sounds.
27:16So, to make creaking, I gathered a lot of creaky stuff
27:20that will make creaky sounds.
27:23Obviously, the biggest thing would be to gather wood and twigs
27:27and stuff like that, dead leaves, to get rustling and creaking.
27:32But I also recorded Salty Sticks, the Swedish snack.
27:36I think it's Swedish?
27:38And one of the biggest parts, actually, of the sound
27:41is my table creaking, dragging against the floor, and also a chair.
27:50I also recorded teeth.
27:52It sounds a bit like bones, maybe, when the mob is walking.
27:57What do you mean by teeth?
28:00Oh, okay.
28:02So, we wanted to make the biome very grey
28:05to give this very eerie feeling, right?
28:08And with these grey tones, a very fitting new woodset
28:12was going to be a white-coloured woodset.
28:14And this is something that players have wanted for a long time.
28:18Yeah, I'm super excited for the Pale Oak woodset,
28:21especially that in a lot of places, people paint their fences white,
28:25for example, for a white picket fence.
28:27And that will be exciting for a lot of players
28:29to actually represent themselves.
28:31And then we also have the hanging moss,
28:34and you can bonewheel it, so it's renewable.
28:37So I think just bringing it as well,
28:39and maybe put it in a greenhouse,
28:41and things hang from the roof, like a wild garden.
28:44Something like that would be really fun to build with it, I think.
28:48Yeah, and it's also a really unique carpet moss,
28:51because it also spreads all over the sides of the block.
28:54We look for a lot of inspiration,
28:56so we've looked at all these different forests all over the world.
29:00A tree that stood out was the willow tree,
29:03because it's very hanging, there's a lot of drapery,
29:06and it feels very eerie.
29:09Then we looked at Spanish moss.
29:12This was the inspiration for the pale hanging moss
29:15that we've used in the biome, eventually.
29:17Because this gives this kind of,
29:19you know, like a bit of a, you know,
29:22Because this gives this drapey feeling without being willow trees,
29:26and it was a little bit more versatile and flexible to use in the biome,
29:29and could also be used as building blocks.
29:39We are super excited to see what you do
29:41with these new features and the new game drop.
29:44We want to create connections between features,
29:47because the Minecraft world is an ecosystem,
29:49and we really want it to feel like that.
29:51And the creaking heart, and its puppet creaking,
29:54it really has a new way of creating this kind of connection.
29:58So it's going to be really fun to see you all experiencing it.
30:02And it's actually coming to Snapshot's previews and beta's very soon,
30:07so soon you can all try it out.
30:13Villager number 9 here!
30:14Sorry for interrupting again,
30:15but Villager number 15 and I have just escaped from the spooky forest.
30:19And I'd just like to state, like I said earlier, that I was right!
30:22There is in fact a monster in the woods that looks like wood,
30:25and sounds like wood.
30:27What?! That's a lie! You didn't believe that at all!
30:29Many didn't believe me.
30:30But in my heroic foray into the spooky forest,
30:33I, Villager number 9, single-handedly discovered the creature
30:36that I shall now name...
30:38The Crunching!
30:40It's called a creaking!
30:41It literally just said its name!
30:43Maybe I should go into monster hunting.
30:45I'm clearly very good at it.
30:46Villager number 9, monster hunter.
30:49It's got a nice ring to it.
30:50Well, sorry to interrupt the show again.
