00:00Two extremely famous parents, a relatively normal upbringing, and some surprising talents
00:07of her own, Karis Zeta-Douglas is already taking after her mom and dad in several ways.
00:13As the daughter of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, Karis Zeta-Douglas grew up
00:19surrounded by Hollywood royalty. She was born on Easter morning in 2003, three years after her
00:26elder brother, Dylan Michael Douglas, her CNN. She spent her early days at the family's home
00:32in Manhattan, New York, but Karis actually grew up in Bermuda. This meant that she was blissfully
00:37unaware of her parents' fame. As she told Town & Country in 2018,
00:42I thought my dad was a pancake maker. I didn't know he was an actor, honestly."
00:47The family decided to swap the big city for island life early on as Michael Douglas' mother
00:53was from Bermuda. Speaking to Parade in 2022, Catherine Zeta-Jones explained,
00:59Soon after our kids were born, we moved out of the States and put them in schools there.
01:03We were there for 10 years, and it was a profoundly wonderful time."
01:07As a result, Karis and her brother Dylan were initially sheltered from the spotlight. In 2018,
01:13Zeta-Jones told Entertainment Tonight,
01:16They've kind of been removed from the crazy world of Hollywood,
01:19or even the crazy world of Manhattan. We've kind of shielded them away."
01:23When the family moved back to Manhattan, everything changed for the worse.
01:27Karis told Town & Country,
01:29I hated it. I used to get really upset. They would jump on the subway and sit right in front of me.
01:33I was like, six. I was confused. That's when I knew, if this is going to be what it's like,
01:38I need to focus on who I really am. And this is going to be something that's just going to happen,
01:43and I can't do anything about it."
01:45Although Karis eventually came to terms with life in the Big Apple,
01:48being surrounded by the media proved difficult. Karis recalled,
01:52One particularly challenging incident, when she saw a tabloid in a drugstore
01:56claiming that her father had cancer again and that his death was imminent.
02:01Of the distressing incident, she told Town & Country,
02:04I just started crying. I was like, why didn't my parents tell me this?
02:08Only it wasn't true. People just always want a story to tell."
02:12Zeta-Jones and Douglas wanted to instill the right values in their kids,
02:17something Karis really appreciates. Speaking to Town & Country, she explained,
02:21My parents do a really good job of reality-checking me and being like,
02:25look around you. The life you have is extraordinary."
02:28Meanwhile, Zeta-Jones revealed that when raising her children,
02:31she prioritized manners above everything else, saying,
02:35There's nothing worse than a privileged kid without manners. I drilled it into them like
02:39boot camp. She knows she cannot roll her eyes at me or huff and puff around me. I never did
02:44it to my mother and she's not doing it to me."
02:46She's strong and smart and has good morals and good judgment."
02:51Karis Zeta-Douglas comes from an incredibly tight-knit family.
02:54For one, she's unbelievably close with her brother, Dylan Michael Douglas,
02:59as she's repeatedly showcased on Instagram. In a post celebrating his birthday in 2020,
03:04she gushed,
03:05The most incredible brother and best friend I could ask for.
03:08I thank you for everything and love you more than you will ever know."
03:12Two years later, she again praised him on his birthday, writing on Instagram,
03:16To my built-in best friend, you are the epitome of joy."
03:20That special family bond also extends to her parents. In 2021, Karis celebrated her mom and
03:27dad on Instagram, writing,
03:29An appreciation post for the best parents in the world. I thank you for all you do today
03:33and every day. I love you."
03:35Zeta-Jones offered additional insight into their unique bond when she told Entertainment Tonight,
03:40My daughter and I have a really, really close relationship.
03:43She has a wonderful communication with myself and her father.
03:47Discussing the bond she shares with her mother, Karis also told Hello! Magazine,
03:52It's really special. I am lucky. We are open and honest with each other.
03:56She has taught me all the ins and outs of life, but also to have fun and to cherish every moment.
04:02Karis Zeta-Douglas has many passions, including fashion and music. She stepped into the
04:07spotlight when she made her modeling debut alongside her mom on the cover of Town & Country
04:13in 2018. Speaking to the publication, Karis opened up about how clothes have taken on a
04:18powerful significance to her, saying,
04:21Fashion has been so important in my life because my mom is like a fashion icon to me."
04:26According to her mom, Karis is also a talented dancer.
04:30With Zeta-Jones telling Entertainment Tonight,
04:32My daughter is very athletic.
04:34In 2022, Karis revealed her talent as a singer and pianist when she posted a video of herself
04:40singing Bonnie Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me on Instagram.
04:44In 2021, Karis Zeta-Douglas graduated from high school, and her parents couldn't have
04:50been happier. Sharing photos from the occasion on Instagram, her dad wrote,
04:54We love you so much, and we are so excited for your future, as the best is yet to come.
05:01Karis' brother Dylan graduated from Brown University with a degree in political science,
05:06and it seems that she is following in her brother's footsteps. As Zeta-Jones told Parade,
05:11In 2022,
05:12My daughter is currently studying foreign relations and diplomacy at school.
05:16They got their brains from me, though my husband likes to differ."
05:20In 2022, Katherine Zeta-Jones revealed that both Karis and Dylan would love to be actors,
05:26telling Parade,
05:27They know about Celebrity Dome, so they don't want to be famous,
05:31they just want to be good actors."
05:32Offering more insight into her children's love of acting, Zeta-Jones told Jimmy Kimmel Live,
05:37You go to summer camp every year, they do free musicals and straight plays, and they love it."
05:42She reiterated the sentiment to Entertainment Tonight, saying,
05:46But it's so evidently clear that they have it,
05:49and they get it. They know it's a craft. It's not a quick fix of getting a YouTube show.
05:57you
