00:00Hillary Clinton is worried about an October surprise.
00:03I anticipate that, you know, something will happen in October, as it always does.
00:07The former Secretary of State appeared on PBS's Firing Line this past Friday.
00:12There will be concerted efforts to distort and pervert Kamala Harris,
00:19who she is, what she stands for, what she's done.
00:22I mean, look, I mean, the crazy story about me
00:25running a child trafficking operation out of a basement pizzeria.
00:30The so-called Pizzagate conspiracy theory was derived from emails from
00:33Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta released by WikiLeaks in the run-up to the 2016 election.
00:38Clinton's campaign was also harmed by the reopening of an FBI investigation
00:42into her emails in late October 2016.
00:45While that might be the most famous recent October surprise,
00:48there's a long tradition of developments late in the campaign season
00:50taking on disproportionate significance.
00:53For example, according to Politico, in October of 1880,
00:56a paper called the New York Truth published a forged letter purportedly showing Republican
01:00candidate James Garfield supporting Chinese immigration.
01:04This hurt Garfield among anti-immigrant white voters, though he still ended up winning.
01:08It remains to be seen what surprises October of 2024 will bring.
01:12So I don't know what it's going to be, but it will be something,
01:15and we'll have to work very, very hard to make sure that it is exposed as the lie that it is.
