00:0010 people were found guilty in the murder of a UST Law student named Atcho Castillo due to hazing.
00:09They were sentenced to life imprisonment and were paid by Daniels.
00:14Dano Tingcunco was found guilty.
00:20Finally, justice for Atcho Castillo.
00:24Guilty beyond reasonable doubt is the case of Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 11
00:28for 10 members of the Aegis Yuris Fraternity
00:31for violating Section 4-1 of the Anti-Hazing Law of 1995.
00:36They were sentenced to life imprisonment or a maximum of up to 40 years in prison
00:42for hazing a 22-year-old UST Law student.
00:46They were also paid almost half a million actual expenses
00:50and 75,000 pesos in moral damages, exemplary damages and civil indemnity.
01:21The 7-year-long hazing started in 2017.
01:43In September, the Castillo family received a message from an unknown person that their child was missing.
01:49They only found the child in a funerary in Manila.
01:52Perhaps, Atcho's grave is the biggest one.
01:55Atcho was believed to have died from repeated hazing
01:59while he was under the initiation rites of the Aegis Yuris Fraternity.
02:03He told me,
02:04Dad, I joined. There are a lot of benefits.
02:07He was assured that they would not do anything.
02:13And then with full confidence, he said yes.
02:18What's more painful is how Solano found out that he was found lying on a bench in Tondo
02:23and that John Paul Solano just passed by,
02:26when he thought that he would be able to open his coffin.
02:29Solano also found out that he borrowed a red pickup truck to bring Atcho to the hospital
02:34but in the end, the family of another coffin owner was able to open it.
02:39In a previous case of obstruction of justice, Solano was found guilty.
02:44Before these encounters,
02:45Atcho was last seen walking near the UST on September 16.
02:50Early the next day,
02:52several members of his frat were rushing to their frat life.
02:56Past 8 in the morning,
02:58a convoy of a black car, a red pickup truck, and a motorcycle arrived
03:03that brought Atcho to the Chinese General Hospital
03:06where he was declared dead on arrival.
03:09A chat group was also formed there
03:11where some of the accused were recognized.
03:14Earlier, the lawyers and relatives of those found guilty did not give any statement
03:19that became emotional while appearing in court.
03:21According to the decision,
03:23the evidence and testimonies proved the three elements needed to say that there is hazing.
03:29First, there is initiation right.
03:31Second, there is neophyte in Atcho's body.
03:34And third, he went through an embarrassing or painful situation.
03:38It was also proven, according to the court,
03:40the presence in the initiation of 10 accused.
03:43At the same time, under the anti-hazing law,
03:46the actual pain is not needed.
03:48The answer is the same if there is an accused
03:51and nothing was done while the neophyte was injured.
03:54The accused also did not present any solid evidence or testimony
03:59to support the argument that they are not included in the hazing.
04:03And even if there is a condition in Atcho's heart,
04:05that's why he died of cardiac arrest,
04:07according to the court,
04:08the pain in his heart is what caused it and accelerated his death.
04:13This is justice for Atcho and a win for the prosecution court.
04:17Thank you so much for all your support.
04:20But aside from the hazing of 10,
04:22Atcho's parents also want the University of Santo Tomas to be held accountable.
04:26I'm holding University of Santo Tomas responsible for the death of our son.
04:32It has been proven that ageist jurists have been practicing hazing.
04:37And it's time to check your policies.
04:40The university, the civil law department, the dean himself,
04:46failed to protect our son.
04:49I think it's about time heads should roll in UST.
04:53For GMA Integrated News, I'm Danoting Cunco, reporting for 24 Hours.
04:58Although he sympathizes with Atcho's parents,
05:02the dean of UST Civil Law did not agree with some of their statements.
05:07Atcho's mother specifically said that UST is unfair
05:12and the Faculty of Civil Law that protects law students.
05:17UST always asks for the implementation of measures for the safety and well-being of students.
05:26But some individuals are ignoring this.
05:29They are ensuring a safe environment.
05:33And they are doing their best so that the tragedy will not happen again.
