00:00James is a mixed traffic engine. He can pull both freight cars and coaches. He's proud of his smart red paint and so is his driver.
00:13Everyone says you brighten up their day, James. One morning, James whistled loudly at the other engines.
00:20Look at me. I am the smartest, most useful engine on the line.
00:25Rubbish, replied Thomas. We're all useful. Sir Topham Hatt says so, and he's head of the whole railway.
00:33You know what, James, added Percy. What, replied James. You're getting all puffed up.
00:40James huffed away.
00:44Later, he was still boasting. I'm the pride of the line.
00:49I saw you pulling freight cars, snorted Gordon. You're only a goods engine.
00:56I pull coaches, too.
00:59Not as much as I do.
01:01But Sir Topham Hatt has plans for me. James was only making this up, but Gordon believed him.
01:09What plans?
01:10Uh, wait and see.
01:13Oh dear, he thought. Now what'll I do?
01:18Thomas was shunting shining new coaches.
01:23Good morning, James.
01:25Are those coaches for me? asked James hopefully.
01:28No, these are for Gordon's Express. I'll fetch your freight cars next.
01:34But James was going to play a trick on the other engines.
01:38Actually, Thomas, I'm taking the coaches. Sir Topham Hatt asked me to tell you.
01:43What about the cars? asked Thomas.
01:45Uh, give them to Gordon.
01:48Come on, Thomas, said his driver. Orders are orders.
01:51So when James's driver returned, James was coupled to the coaches and he puffed away.
02:07Thomas returned with the freight cars. And a few minutes later, Gordon arrived.
02:13Where's the Express? Thomas told him about James.
02:17And so here are your cars. Gordon was very cross and so was his driver.
02:23Wait till Sir Topham Hatt hears about this.
02:26Meanwhile, James was enjoying himself enormously.
02:30What a clever plan! What a clever plan! he chuffed.
02:35Then he saw Sir Topham Hatt.
02:38Some jokes are funny, but not this one, James. You have caused confusion.
02:44Yes, sir, said James. You will now stay in your shed until you are wanted.
02:51The other engines teased James.
02:54I wonder who'll be pulling the Express today, said Gordon.
02:58I expect it'll be you, replied Henry. James is stuck in the shed for being silly.
03:03James felt sad.
03:06Next morning, he went back to work.
03:09Hello, whistled Thomas. Good to see you out and about again.
03:13I'm sorry I tricked you, said James. Are these my cars?
03:18Yes, replied Thomas kindly. They are pleased to have you back.
03:22James set off to the harbor with his train of freight cars.
03:26He hustled about all day, pushing and pulling them into place.
03:37Time to go home now, James, said his driver at last.
03:41No cars or passengers, just we two.
03:44But his driver was wrong.
03:46Excuse me, called a man. I have a meeting with Sir Topham Hatt and I mustn't be late.
03:51May I ride back with you?
03:53Of course, replied James' driver.
03:55Then he whispered to James.
03:57This gentleman is a railway inspector.
04:00James was most impressed.
04:04He steamed along the line as smoothly and quickly as he could.
04:13Sir Topham Hatt was waiting on the platform and the railway inspector greeted him warmly.
04:18This clever engine gave me a splendid ride. You must be proud of him.
04:22Yes, indeed, once again you are a really useful engine.
