00:00Okay, tell me about your dad. I would describe my dad as really annoying very lazy really old-fashioned
00:07No, it's all
00:09Wow, some things got changed because I'm hoping to get a better relationship with my dad
00:18My god, that's sick. It's not Manchester. I tell ya
00:23International explorer Ed Stafford
00:26Is taking six ordinary dads and their kids to the jungles of Central America
00:33Modern life is rubbish. It's getting in the way. I was being good dads. I don't spend time with my dad
00:39We haven't done anything together
00:44It's leading them on an extreme adventure, I think it's trying to kill it absolutely
00:53Designed to bring them closer
00:55It's jaguars. There's venomous snakes. It's hot humid
00:59You're drenched in sweat the whole time your back has been bitten to shreds, but that's good
01:05Testing yourself in an extreme environment is an amazing way of building relationships
01:14Can doing something together you never thought possible
01:18Make you a better dad
01:21Stunning this trip is changing both of us. This is beautiful. My God jungle is a place where magic can happen
01:28It changed my life. It will change theirs, too
01:33Ed you've been out trying to catch a fish
01:37This is what we've managed to call all four of us
01:48You
02:02There is no environment in the entire world that I feel more comfortable than the jungle
02:07There's an energy about it that somehow resonates with me
02:12International explorer Ed Stafford recently moved to the jungles of Central America with his wife and three children
02:19There's no point at all in
02:21Preaching the benefits of extreme adventure if you let your kids watch TV all day
02:25So I decided to put my money where my mouth is and bring my kids up in a challenging environment
02:30Now for the first time Ed is leading a group of dads. You've been anywhere like the jungle
02:36It's a local pop can what's gonna be different a and their kids I like
02:43I'm like
02:47Into the Belizean jungle
02:49These dads are here for a reason each one of them has something that's gone wrong in their relationship that they want to fix with
02:55their kid
02:56Right cameras rolling
02:59Now
03:01They have snowflakes a softer generation, I don't understand what he means by the softer
03:07Who's in charge between you two Dexter?
03:10Without a doubt Dexter being a dad isn't really that tough. We've got to do is go to work and then like
03:18Come home and then just sit and watch TV and just say yeah. No to your kids and stuff
03:23Yeah, it's where you like boarding I don't yeah
03:27He thinks like he knows everything. I see do I well, I think my car is completely wrong there
03:33So you can't even agree on what's wrong with your relationship?
03:39As they get deeper into the jungle
03:42Ed has sent the kids bus off in a different direction. I think a vital part of any expedition is getting to know each other
03:49So I've deliberately split the dads from their kids in order to pressure test the dad drop them in at the deep end and see what
03:56They're made of
04:05Okay, good need everyone to grab a rucksack each one of us has a rucksack
04:10I'm going to put it in the back of the car. I'm going to put it in the back of the car
04:13I'm going to put it in the back of the car. I'm going to put it in the back of the car
04:17Everyone to grab a rucksack each get off the bus and follow me pass them down break as you can
04:24Thank you, sir. Ever right follow me
04:31Welcome to Belize you may have noticed that your children aren't here
04:36They are upstream from here, okay, and it's your job to get to them as fast as you can in
04:43Separating the dads from their kids. I want to see if the dads can show the kids that they can step up in order to protect them
04:50Between here and there is dense rainforest the dangers are very real. You've got poisonous spiders. You've got scorpions
04:57You've got ants it will give you a very very nasty bite
05:00From here on in I'm going to step back and you can be on your own
05:04Any questions, so did you say our kids are straight down the river Southwest?
05:09I'm more than happy that I can achieve this quite easily. Okay, I'm ready to go
05:13I'm not going to be the one to flop out here. No way
05:16Let's go. You're gonna get the nudges wet boys
05:20The dads are in the Naha Chen area of central Belize
05:25They face a grueling two-hour hike through rivers and over a mountain ridge to reach their children
05:32I
05:40Reckon my dad's gonna be lost
05:42Just no rush to go get his child
05:45My dad's probably falling and trembling right now
05:48Because he needs me. That's why
05:51Are you feeling comfortable?
05:53Comfy as ever be on this piece of shit couch
05:56Twelve-year-old Dexter lives just outside Manchester with dad Jethro stepmom Stacey and younger brother Elijah
06:04Jeffrey's an amazing dad, but he's very good protective
06:08He wants them to continue to have the relationship they had when Dexter was younger and as Dexter get older
06:14He's struggling. Obviously. He's getting to high school
06:16This is the age where they start like growing up and backing away from you
06:19So but it's very hard to like let go
06:22I feel he would 100% want me to stay around for all my whole life, but he knows I can't do that
06:30Unfortunately
06:33Yeah, you are guys you're good
06:36As the dads leave the river behind
06:39They split up into pairs
06:42It's gonna be interesting to see whether they can actually make it over this
06:46Ridge line because the route is about to get a lot steeper a lot more treacherous and a little bit more dangerous
06:52as well
06:53Jethro is at the back of the hike with dad of two Ben. I'm gonna be absolutely fucked. I
07:00Still can't see them. Well, yes the boarding school. So we are like ships in the night
07:05I want to rebuild our relationship on last few years. I've lost a connection with my dad
07:14In the middle a dad's F doll and Chris
07:17This is not like walk in the woods of Dorset at all, I'd say my dad's old-fashioned
07:21He doesn't like being with technology that much
07:23Chris is out of touch with my generation and it's more hands like this rather than hands like this
07:30So it probably could do with learning a few of the old school skills. That's how I'd describe it
07:35Look at them
07:37Bloody eyes a bit too much for a plot, isn't it? My god. It literally looks like shark teeth terrible
07:42It probably is called the shark tooth tree or something
07:45Do you sometimes feel a bit more grown-up than dad? Yes
07:49He'll have his little cartoon on the TV and then he'll be doing his Lego ain't just Lego. It's technical Lego
07:56Thank you very much his bug hotel. This is the Ritz
08:00Every day, I feel like he's the biggest child in the house
08:03I want him to feel that 100% sense of responsibility for his daughter because of course it's expected of mum to do
08:11Everything yeah, the mozzies seem to be enjoying themselves free buffet tourist buffet
08:18An hour into the hike and for the kids, there's still no sign of their dad's
08:31I'm not big enough to feed all years. I
08:38Don't know I wouldn't have done this without you I don't think
08:41Still at the back and falling further behind the group are Ben and Jethro
08:46I wasn't even comfortable leaving him on the bus
08:48So actually coming through a jungle not knowing where he is like I just need to get there
08:53Being a dad is probably the most positive thing that I've ever actually done, but we have had a fair share of challenges
08:59You know, it's not always been easy. I just worry about Dexter
09:03It's just away. I'm like with every difficult thing. I've had to go through the worry becomes worse and worse
09:11All right, I'm cool
09:15Jethro invariably is slower than the rest
09:17And I think there is no hiding the fact that it's gonna be difficult for him to keep up with the group
09:21But he's got a determination
09:23Okay, I take it back. I don't like the jungle
09:29This is a real jungle check in here now at the front
09:33Storming up the ridge are Christian and Jeff if you slip to the left down there by any chance
09:40That's it mate
09:42100% finish
09:45Jeff seems solid. He's positive. He's strong. He's physically able and
09:51There's mosquitoes everywhere
09:54I don't mind this right now. Yeah, see I'm used to these from Jamaica
10:01That's better now in it make you smile my hands are not sweaty
10:0639 year old carpenter Jeff lives in North London
10:10While his 12 year old son Akai and five-year-old daughter Naomi
10:14Live with their mum Marissa in Brixton
10:18I'm always telling you what it's like growing up in Jamaica
10:22Having to do everything for yourself. I
10:25Used to wake up in the morning
10:27My first chores was to either go with my great-grandfather to get the cow to get a bit of milk
10:33We have to move the goats and so they can have fresh pastas while we go to school
10:38We had to make our own toys in Jamaica growing up, you know
10:41It would be amazing to have a kite in the jungle to see how he actually copes. Oh
10:48That's a butterfly
10:52My dad thinks that he's one with the earth and one with the jungle and even if that is the truth
10:58I feel like still some of the things that he's saying can be a bit over exaggerated
11:03Because you still see I'm ordering food off of uber eats like
11:08Go go and catch some chicken or something like you seen you did back in your time
11:13I think you have to be so careful what you hold on to as well
11:16Cuz just break and slip away as much as he's used to that lifestyle
11:21He's been in London for too many years and he's definitely a city boy now. He ain't no jungle boy
11:33I
11:36Know far away now. You can hear them. Oh brilliant me if you can hear them. That's what we like. I think I can see them
11:49May is so covered with all kind of spiders and stuff falling from the trees
11:55You don't know what I had to go through just to get to you may I'm coming
12:00dad
12:04I
12:10Can see you
12:17Just go find a way down to them. Yeah, I think we can get down through that bit there over there
12:21Oh my gosh, look at this fool. Oh my god. Oh my god
12:26Coming guys, we're coming
12:28To find a way down
12:31So what you seeing guys what we're looking at yeah chair drop down into the water
12:38That's a big drop and we've had a look around there's literally nowhere else to go I'll make that is a nightmare
12:45That is a nightmare to reach their kids. The dads face a 25-foot jump into deep waters
12:54My kids there. I need my son
12:56Okay, well done guys Jeff you got him first yes, so we're gonna send you over first
13:05I've never had to jump off a cliff into a big massive lake like this before I can swim enough to get out of trouble
13:12But swimming across there mate, that's a nightmare
13:26I
13:33Told Akai all these great stories from Jamaica that I'm such a climber. I'm such a swimmer dive on the ocean
13:40Just to give give him some energy and like pump him up a bit, but I never thought I'd have to prove it in real life
13:47No, they come to the crunch. It's like you came back to bite me now
13:56I'll throw your bag off. Yes, and then just step in. Oh
14:04My god, okay. Oh
14:08Look at the height of it though. Yeah
14:11Wow
14:13Put your legs together arms by your side and keep your jaw shut. You didn't bite your tongue. Mm-hmm. Okay. Yeah
14:23Me
14:26I
14:40This is a massive drop
14:43In the heart of the Belizean jungle six dads face a 25-foot jump to reach their kids
14:52Under the direction of expedition leader Ed Stafford
14:56You will break your legs if you go too far
15:00First to take the plunge is Jeff who unbeknown to his son Akai is a weak swimmer
15:07In your own time step off
15:20I'm ready
15:26Oh
15:40Jeff don't panic the back Jeff the back
15:49You've done it mate well done. All right
15:56Well done to him Jesus
16:22That was bad on him, you know that
16:26I'm not a water guy, but I couldn't let my little man down. So I had to take the plunge
16:31That was high the current is very strong. It's dragging you
16:35That was tough. That's one of the toughest thing I've ever had to do
16:40Christian you up next. Yeah, the remaining dads now face the drop. You ready? That seems like quite a long drop
16:56I
17:05Going on expeditions has definitely made me a better dad. Oh my dad's next
17:10I've never seen my dad do anything like this before so it's like very new to me
17:15I
17:17Think if you're faced with loads of really big challenges, then it gives you that depth of trust in yourself
17:26The everyday life is utterly achievable and I think you know less things faze you as well
17:34So it's good to put yourself in a situation where you're addressing head-on something you're afraid of and overcoming it
17:41Are you okay with this? Yeah
17:52Last of the dads to jump is support worker
17:56Jethro
17:57I'm not gonna lie. I'm nervous. So jumping off something with nothing holding on to me is a bit
18:03Nip wrapping my dad do well in the jungle. Your dad is amazing. You're that's a superhero
18:10As a kid we used to go down to like this place called Red Rock where everyone used to jump in and I
18:16Just could never do it. So this will definitely be
18:20out my comfort zone
18:22Which leaves anyone
18:26I
18:29Think my dad's gonna be caught in the jungle. I don't think he has any fears at all
18:34To be honest, I've never seen a drop of fear for my dad
18:40How you feel yeah, is there anything you're uncomfortable about particularly
18:48Jumping got a bit of height
18:51Would
18:54Anything get in the way of you if Dexter was in trouble
18:56No, if if Dexter phone me is in trouble. I'll be there without a doubt. I
19:03Crawl if I had to just to be with him
19:10My life has been about Dexter and I feel like I'm there to protect him
19:14But I think with that has came the fact that he has never seen me being vulnerable
19:19As long as he knows that I'm always gonna be there for him, that's it. That's all that matters to me
19:24Free to go whenever you want
19:27He's terrified
19:33Okay
19:38I think he'd be really disappointed if I didn't so whether I want you or not. I've got to do it for him
19:49Oh
20:20I'm already wet enough badger muppet. Well, don't do that though
20:29That has been a phenomenal effort from him that is a hard track for anybody and he stood with it big day one for Jeffrey
20:37I
20:48Belize holds over 12,000 square miles of jungle and is where Ed first discovered his love of adventure
20:57Belize is a country that changed my life
20:5921 years ago. I left the army and there was a list of very very boring jobs of estate agent
21:04Sorry of your estate agent and at the bottom of this list was expedition leader believes and I just thought that's cool
21:11I'll do that for three months
21:12But thankfully it changed the course of my life and I'm hoping it has the same effect on the dads and their kids
21:19Since then Ed has led hundreds of expeditions, but he's never taken a group of dads and their children into the jungle before
21:34I think those things are edible, you know pick those and eat them off the tree
21:41The challenges that I'm gonna set the dads and kids are gonna get harder as the days go on and
21:46It's super important that they've got some was safe some of that. They feel comfortable with that. They can come back to
21:52Camp fires going I can see smoke gonna have sausages for dinner squirrel. I reckon no barbecued squirrel
21:58All
22:00Right guys, welcome to your expedition base
22:03This is where you're gonna be for the next 10 days. The first thing I'm gonna do is
22:10Free you from your mobile phones. Oh
22:13My god
22:15Okay, so everyone got their mobile phones on them
22:17Of course you have
22:19It's anyone particularly anxious about putting their phones in him. I'm quite relieved you're relieved
22:24Hey doabless few less beeps in my life, yeah, I finally get to talk to my dad probably
22:35Dexter
22:43How much time do you spend on your phones too much
22:46Well, we spend more on our phones and we talk to each other in a day. I've definitely seen my parents
22:53Perceive me as being my phone a lot, but that's just not true
23:04You've not gonna snuck it and lie to your mom a couple of times how I'm snooker she's got for us safe she has now
23:13Okay, I would spend every single minute of the day he has on his phone or on the PlayStation
23:19Okay, do some press-up maybe tidy up create something invent something
23:25Sorry about that for it wasn't silence. Do you miss the whole phone silent? No, it's fine. Okay, I can do that
23:32Thank you me. Thank you Christian
23:35With phones stashed away. It's time to run through the dangers of the jungle
23:41Dehydration obviously in this environment and is a massive one properly hydrate yourselves
23:46Does anyone know what a bot fly is what a butterfly bot fly owner bot flies lay their eggs on the underside of mosquitoes
23:54And the mosquitoes bite you and then they drop into the mosquito bite and you get this nice big maggoty butterfly
24:02Sound nasty that in order for that to grow it has to eat your flesh
24:08In terms of the big animals, there's jaguars. Okay, that's the apex predator out here in the jungle
24:13It can crush your skull with its jaws. They are serious predators out here
24:17They are a real threat and they like children more than they like adults because they're easier to eat
24:22There's the horror story for the night
24:36Come here mate after seeing Jethro struggle with being separated from Dexter during the hike
24:43Ed wants to know more. It seems as though you're bond with Dexter. It's one of the strongest connections in in the group
24:50I need him growing up. I didn't really have like the greatest of beginnings. I was in Karen's. I was like nine ish
24:56Do you mind me asking why you went into care?
24:59So my mum was a drug addict
25:03the hard stuff
25:05So my mum and dad split up when I was young and I was left in my mum
25:10And she obviously had a habit that was more important than a kids
25:15All I've ever been interested in was having a stable family home. How old were you when you had Dexter?
25:21So I was 20 when he was born. Okay, so quite his mom decided now she would broke up the relationship broke down
25:27She decided to move on and move away and stuff and his mom took him away from me for months
25:32That was complete no talking to him. I wasn't even allowed to post in the letters
25:36Do you know I mean like I went a lot I missed his second birthday
25:40I ended up in a court battle for Dexter because I believed that I was in his best interest
25:46Obviously being a dad
25:48Not everybody sees it that way
25:50It was like I was battling everybody because even people who knew me was like you're never gonna win custody over a mother
25:56The court battle went on for a year in nine months and I was scared the whole time because I couldn't imagine a life
26:03without Dexter
26:06I took full custody of him when he was three
26:09I've been through a lot. That was the hardest. I
26:13Feel like being a parent was just in my DNA. Like I just had to prove that I could put his needs above my own
26:19I knew the day Dexter was born that he was gonna be the light in my life
26:27Even just today with the challenge of being separated like that. I was like it really made me feel uncomfortable. I'm not gonna lie
26:32I
26:36Do want to show him that there is more there is a world out here, you know, I mean like and I
26:42Say that and then in my head I think but then if he starts seeing the world
26:46Where does that leave me? Is there a fear as he gets older that relationships gonna?
26:51Well, I'm scared is all your joke between us that like I was telling he's never allowed to leave
26:55Like I was like, so he talks about university sometime and like nope
26:59I'm a bit clingy towards him and it's that tongue-in-cheek or do you mean that I think a part of me really means it
27:05This might sound harsh, but you're gonna have to work through that
27:07I know I know I know he's gonna fly the nest and I'm quite dependent on him
27:11Like I think it's more emotional than anything. It's just I
27:15Can't stand the thought of losing him
27:18But it's basic level
27:20I thought this
27:21Expedition was all gonna be about trying to strengthen
27:23Relationships and already on day one I'm faced with the situation where this is the strongest relationship I can imagine a father and son ever
27:30having
27:31but the Jeff who I think maybe
27:34Helping him work through this
27:37clear recognition that he is
27:40Holding on to Dexter, but he needs to allow the reins to go out a little bit
27:45And maybe this is the environment to do that
27:53And
28:00We're gonna put some of that powder on your feet
28:04Are you sure?
28:07All right, and I want to see you rub it in between those toes as well
28:11Just rub it in between your toes
28:15It's the second day of Explorer at Stafford's expedition
28:19Morning peeps morning morning morning. Yeah, come and grab some porridge if you want it. I
28:26Hate porridge
28:28He's leading a group of dads and their kids in the jungles of Belize
28:37Yeah, I use it as well, actually, but they're not great if you're being attacked by a Jaguar because you'll just sleep through it
28:46In my life
28:48It's like living in the jungle
28:52All right, then guys let's head up
28:55Yesterday Ed tested the dads alone
28:59Today, he wants to see how they work with their kids
29:03Don't start to steepen now already. We're gonna go up hill
29:08Ed's taking them to caves branch a dense area of jungle in Belize's Cayo district
29:15One of the biggest difficulties with dads and their kids is just finding time to spend with each other
29:20So on this expedition, I've got a number of surprises up my sleeve to get them working together
29:25If the rock looks too shiny, I wouldn't step on it. That's when it's too slippery
29:30Wow
29:32Yeah. All right. It's as I said
29:35Do the two of you spend much time together?
29:38Even though I live in Northwest London and Akai live in Brixton every morning. I call him. Have you had your breakfast?
29:44Is your homework done? Is your spelling right as your mom checked it?
29:49He does it all the time
29:51So, yeah, that's what really annoys me
29:54Do you guys want to spend more time together?
29:57Yeah
30:02No, dad's making me do this
30:04Most of the time Chris tends to be in his bedroom and you might not see him for hours
30:08We don't go in we don't you know, you open the room if you can get in, you know
30:12You might find something you don't want to find
30:16A lot of time spent together is actually driving you to places you got to be. I'm carrying stuff. So now I'm a car horse
30:30I'm literally just a donkey to carry things now. Stop it. How's your undercut doing?
30:35I'm sweating. You should have shaved it off like me then. I'm not shaving my hair off
30:42Twelve-year-old Aimee lives in North Devon with her electrician dad Christian, older sister Faith, and mum Francie
30:50Things I enjoy doing are karate, gymnastics, rowing and I also play the guitar
30:57Aimee is in my opinion a very confident
31:01Individual but I think that Chris doesn't always appreciate that. He's always like putting my shoes on or scraping my plate
31:09obviously
31:10She's got one hand. So I think she needs help with things
31:14When dad tries to help me, I think sometimes I can get a bit annoyed
31:19So what I'm hoping to get from us being in the jungle is to prove
31:24I don't always need his help with physical things when I just want to do it by myself
31:31I'm sweating. Oh, I see a big hole in the ground. I
31:39Think we're on top of a cliff somewhere. Oh, yeah, it's a big fucking drop
31:44You see through there? Yeah, we're definitely on the edge of a cliff here. Oh
31:49my god
31:51Look at that
31:55This is one of the biggest sinkholes in Belize the group have arrived at Acton Lodge to niche
32:00Known as the mother of all caves
32:08This is a cave system that has collapsed
32:1065 million years ago
32:12The Mayans believed that the caves at the bottom of sinkholes were the entrance to the underworld
32:18in order to access some of the coolest places in the jungle you have to go through some pretty big obstacles and
32:26the fastest way
32:28Down into the sinkhole is to abseil
32:38The secret is don't look down I think I
32:42Am a little bit worried about anything. Yeah, what's she like with heights? She's fine. Oh and totally missing a hand
32:48Yeah, actually she's feeling a bit nervous
32:50Yeah
32:53Look out across from the top of the lip there down to the bottom of the sinkhole is
32:59160 foot our safety team are about to do a demo of what you guys are about to do. I'm only a child
33:09Oh, no, I see him. So you see them coming to the edge. Oh, they look so small. Yeah. Oh my gosh. Yeah
33:14Yeah, yeah all the way up there. Look. Is that what we're going down? Oh, wow
33:18You can see they've got their rucksacks that are hanging between their legs and at that point
33:23They're free hanging now and they're just entering the forest canopy
33:36You're gonna be going down in pairs
33:39father child
33:41All about you two helping each other in order to access the entrance to that cave. Okay
33:48Last is hold on. I mean I got you out. You see me jump in the lake yesterday. I'm ready for this
33:55This is easy. Yeah
34:09You've got this up you got this
34:12Jeff and Akai prepare to take on the abseil you're gonna walk back to this edge. Okay?
34:18There's no fear here mate. You got this
34:21one thing that really does get in the way of me and my dad, you know having our full potential of a perfect relationship is
34:28Sometimes I feel like he just doesn't really listen to me
34:32I'm Aaron and I'm gonna step back a little bit and you can be much more on your own
34:35Okay, I'll show you a key look watch me up. I've got safety rope. They look I'm not fooling. You'll never fool
34:41No, no, you got this. Just hold this. Look at me. You see the action push it in. There you go
34:46Yeah
34:47Slowly look at me. Look do what I'm doing. Look just look at me. Look look what I'm doing. You see
34:57But look at me at look
34:59Move my back drop and I'm still fine. Look all the way is there
35:02So when I kind of grew up into a strong confident and smart man like me, but I think I kind of really needs to
35:11Realize that he's a child. He's only 12. So his job is to listen to me all the time
35:16I know best and it's for your own good and he's just wants to argue. He just wants to fight about every single point
35:23Back, look at me. Am I gonna let you do something? I don't trust look at me
35:33You got this yeah
35:37Look at me slowly then I'm gonna grab there slowly then I'm gonna grab it. Don't worry
35:42Look at me. I put your foot day solid. You got this up. You got this you the rope would never break
35:49What you think you're gonna spin? You're not gonna spin. Look at me. I'm absolutely sick of hearing these two going back and forth with each other
35:57Jeffrey likes to force his opinion with the decibels louder as well. I
36:02Feel that Jeffrey needs to learn how to listen to a car now that he's growing into a young man
36:08Straighten straighten don't spin just straighten. Don't be scared. Look at me up. You're not doing me. Look straighten
36:14Yeah, straighten up. You got this
36:17Yeah, just slowly. I didn't drop that hand. I'll put the other hand down. Yes up. That's it
36:22I just don't look down. Look at me. We're gonna do this. Don't worry. Keep your legs straight
36:28Come on look at me slowly. I've got this look at me. Just look at me
36:35I just fell
36:43Look at me
36:45Ed Stafford is testing the dad's ability to work with their kids on a 160 foot abseil
36:55Just look at me
36:57Oh
37:01That's all right, you're right you'll never drop we'll pull you up I've got you just put your foot straight man
37:05I've got you can't all right. We can bring him in quite quickly now
37:09After losing his footing ed pulls twelve-year-old Akai off the cliff face
37:18I'm sorry, cuz I knew what to do it
37:22I'm sorry, mate. You gave that a proper good go. Do not worry
37:27Do not beat yourself up about that
37:31Although Jeff was talking the whole time I could tell that Akai didn't want to hear his voice
37:37the panic in his eyes
37:39He was looking me for direction and I didn't want to take over because this is all about
37:44their relationship I
37:48Don't think I'm being unfair that Akai just wanted his dad to
37:57Just feel disappointed, I mean it wasn't really a good my attempt, but I tried I
38:06Told you what to do you told me what you can't show me. I showed you I
38:11Feel like my dad just wants me to be perfect
38:14Top of the school the highest and everything so I feel like he's not really setting realistic expectations
38:22You know I'm not letting you up lightly. Okay. This is real man stuff here now
38:27This is hope when I was being here to bring this out of you now
38:30Growing up. I didn't really have that much male road models around my dad died when I was four years old
38:38And I think that's made me
38:41Overpairing Akai all the things that I wanted from my dad. I find myself being that particular father to Akai
38:49So sometimes I actually have to stop on questioning myself and say I'm I even doing the right thing. I'm sorry
38:55Yeah, I know it's fine me don't worry
39:09Okay Chris and Chris here we go
39:13Ben and Rocca I want you both to have a wide stance look at me got this
39:19Okay, you're now clipped in is it's totally up to you, baby. Don't look done
39:25I'm not gonna look done. This challenge is my first opportunity to see the relationship between father and child
39:31That's it. Don't be frightened to lean back. No
39:34Anymore this and I'll just let it go down
39:37Walking down you got it. Yep. Very calm talking him through it keep leaning back
39:43I want to find out how they operate together in an environment that is so outside of their comfort zone
39:49You're okay fine you're fine you're fine you're not gonna fall right you just beat there you go
39:55All I'm gonna concentrate on this slowly let this out let's slowly go down
40:05Oh, it was fun in the end what a place. Oh my god, there we go
40:13That was a dream
40:16Dreamer
40:18Even though Jeffery's so far outside his comfort zone. He just snaps into dad mode when he has to I'm proud of you
40:31I want to do is really high
40:33You've come this far. That's that's enough for me. I think my dad
40:38Underestimates me a lot. I like to push myself, but my dad doesn't help me do that
40:44I'm happy with you turn him back. If you want don't worry about anyone else thing. I won't be disappointed
40:54Honest let's go
40:58Being a dad is about challenging your kids don't worry, and I think if you do that, they'll be better for it
41:07Christian and Immy are last to attempt the abseil
41:11It's gonna be easy
41:14I
41:16Was born with my limb difference and obviously I'm very used to as I've and it's all I've known
41:23Yeah, I mean if you're happy come forward then I
41:27Think the things I struggle with might be like the more physical tasks
41:31Climbing like a rope or something like that where I would need help because I have to hold my own body weight on just one
41:38hand
41:39And you're just gonna face the mountain, okay
41:41I think I can be a bit stubborn and kind of be like no
41:46I'm gonna figure out a way and how I can do it
41:49Good right you're clipped in your right hand, okay?
41:53The right hand is gonna come
41:55Down here, and that is your break. Okay, you left hand that you don't have
42:01You don't need it. Okay for the moment. I'm just gonna clip your dad in okay
42:07I'm afraid of maybe
42:09When I can't do something people
42:12Making fun of it. I think it's the fear of people seeing me fail because
42:18Once they see me fail once then they're gonna keep thinking I will always fail
42:30That is the hardest bit of this it's just getting used to being a member, okay
42:39We're poising for the rain
42:44I think at 12 years old everybody needs guns, but especially for the meat
42:49I do feel I need to step in and help up with things because you don't want your kids to struggle
42:54I want things to be easy for her, but I think I do need to learn to
42:58Let her come to me or help
43:04Okay, yeah
43:10Oh
43:12Yeah, just let it ease it out straight leg straight legs, that's it
43:20Sitting down
43:22It's amazing well done. It's really amazing nice wide stance it nice and wide yeah
43:32Keep walking
43:35Keep walking keep walking
43:39It's
43:42So tough it really is you can do it
43:46Got it, okay
44:07Keep your hand away
44:09Hand away
44:12Hold it hold it tight hold it tight
44:27Maybe I've got you
44:39You are
44:45Jacky me probably have you got it? Yeah
44:55It's yours
44:57Hello in the jungle there's gonna be challenges
45:01But if that can help me get over the fear even if things are difficult then I can do anything
45:09Oh
45:16How did I feel
45:24That was an incredible effort
45:29When we're at the top and there's that one point where I thought she's not gonna do she's not gonna do it at all
45:33And then she went down
45:35Yeah, that was it yeah, huh, they're still all right
45:45Oh, it's coming down
45:51I'd never done anything like that before at the start
45:53I thought it was something that I wouldn't be able to do but my dad tried to like make you feel safe
45:58He was like calming me down, and I think that's what I really needed
46:02amazing
46:04It's amazing even with that much fear you can do
46:07It is satisfying to see some of the dads and the kids starting to work well with each other right follow me then down here
46:14But in other areas the cracks are beginning to show
46:19Really slippery guys
46:21From this point on in the expedition everything's gonna get a lot tougher and they need to be ready for it
46:29You
46:32Next time
46:34It's probably harder to survive on an island than it is in the jungle. We're already drifting off
46:39They're gonna be panicky on that raft. I know what to do. It's too deep
46:43This is Haven of tarantulas. You can fuck right off
46:48Kids have turned feral in two days
46:51I've missed a massive part of this of growing up your whole life has been turned upside down
46:59You
47:21You
