00:00In August 2000, West Ham United had made a poor start to their Premier League campaign.
00:07Their record ahead of the home game against in-form Manchester United
00:11was played two, lost two, and they were bottom of the league to boot.
00:15They weren't expecting any favours from United either.
00:18They'd put 11 goals past them in their two league meetings the previous season.
00:22High time for some Paolo De Canio magic.
00:26Harry Redknapp was forced to make a couple of changes.
00:29Youngsters Joe Cole and Michael Carrick came in for the injured Frank Lampard and Trevor Sinclair.
00:34Shaka Hislop was in goal after passing a late fitness test.
00:38Andy Cole led the line for United, but Alex Ferguson had selection problems as well.
00:43Dwight York and Dennis Irwin were injured.
00:46Mikel Silvestre slotted into the centre of defence,
00:49while Roy Keane played his last game before a three-match ban.
00:53It had been 23 years since the Irons had started a season with three straight defeats.
00:58Redknapp very keen to avoid a repeat of that.
01:02Match commentary at Upton Park from Martin Tyler.
01:11Silvestre with a climb on De Canio.
01:29FANS SHOUT OUT
01:35Stam clears.
01:42Here's De Canio.
01:45Suker in the centre.
01:48My word, Joe Cole was flying him back for De Canio!
01:51And Bartosz's handling of a potentially greasy ball was expert, to say the least.
01:58Which wriggles away, though, from Sheringham's control.
02:01Ferdinand playing on the right-hand side for Harry Redknapp.
02:13Typical squash-buckling tackle by Stuart Pearce.
02:18Silvestre.
02:21FANS SHOUT OUT
02:23Well, Manchester United have mixed it up at the back,
02:26because Gary Neville's playing in the middle.
02:29Philip Neville at right-back, and Silvestre at left-back.
02:35Giggs, Sheringham, trying to take it on past Dematch.
02:3938-year-old Stuart Pearce wallops it away, characteristically.
02:47I would expect a fast start.
02:53Bartosz has impressed already in his short time in England,
02:56and his kicking has been part of that.
03:00Giggs.
03:02Back to a challenge for Rio Ferdinand against the Welshman.
03:05Cole, with the brush aside, Dematch.
03:08There's a challenge from Carrick that helped West Ham.
03:11Beckham, ball eagerness.
03:14Match by Cole.
03:16Keane.
03:18A real sliding challenge from Dematch that Dermot Gallagher saw,
03:22and Teddy Sheringham felt.
03:30One of the problems that I think referees are having,
03:34the pace of the game at premiership level is electrifying.
03:40And of course, contact at high speed
03:44does at times magnify the seriousness
03:49of those collisions, but there was no doubt that
03:52Dematch was unwise to go sliding in like that.
03:56Particularly giving away a free kick in this part of the pitch
03:59against Manchester United. It does, in theory, favour the left-footer
04:03Giggs more than the right-footer Beckham, but
04:07Beckham is the senior man and he can make light of those
04:10supposed difficulties, and Manchester United lead.
04:13It's another textbook Beckham free kick
04:16in the sixth minute.
04:20And that slide by Dematch on Sheringham
04:23turned out to be a costly infringement.
04:27First goal for Manchester United scored by our second David Beckham.
04:34Hislop not sure which way he was going to go,
04:37eventually to his left and beyond his reach.
04:44Macchio from Di Canio.
04:47Losing the full width of the pitch.
04:50Di Canio going on.
04:53Cole getting into the centre. It's almost for Cole.
04:58From Winterburn's cross from the far side.
05:13Scholes.
05:15Sheringham.
05:16Sheringham.
05:19It's Carrick.
05:20Going to get back in amongst the defenders again
05:23to help out.
05:40That goes up.
05:42Beckham and Barthez
05:44are already very much on the same wavelength.
05:49And this
05:50so-called faster brand of ball used in the
05:53premiership this season.
05:54Very suitable for those long kicks
05:56from Manchester United's new goalkeeper.
05:59Ferdinand.
06:00He's lost Roy Keane.
06:04Decided to
06:06have a crack at goal.
06:09Having made that initial move
06:11rather than go on and try and confront Gary Neville.
06:14You can't blame him for that, Rio Ferdinand.
06:16He's only got a couple of goals in his West Ham career.
06:20Winterburn.
06:41Winterburn piles in and gets the free kick.
06:46Tremendous professional.
06:49Still fit as a fiddle.
06:56Cole.
06:58To Di Canio.
07:04Take on two.
07:07Still Paolo Di Canio.
07:10Carrick.
07:12Rather slipped through the fingertips of Barthez
07:14but at least he got enough on the ball
07:16to make the save.
07:17There's a suspicion I thought of handball by Carrick
07:19as he got the ball under control in the first place
07:21but the referee was very close to be fair to Dermot Gallagher.
07:31Di Canio for Cole.
07:33Whipping it in.
07:35Waiting with some intent here is Schüker
07:37but his first touch wasn't good.
07:42Still Schüker.
07:47Well it started a bit laboriously on the far side
07:50but it almost ended with the sort of thrust
07:54that West Ham are looking for.
07:55They've got another chance for Di Canio
07:58to play the ball in from the corner.
08:02Stimacz going to the near post.
08:04Margas behind him.
08:05Rather up in the air from Silvestre.
08:08Then from Rio Ferdinand.
08:11Tierce.
08:13For Lomas.
08:14Better from West Ham.
08:16Halfway through the first half.
08:19Winterberg.
08:26Nicely killed by Michael Carrick.
08:30Lomas being urged to cross it deep.
08:32They've got players waiting on the far side.
08:35Margas and Stimacz who were up for the corner originally.
08:39Owingo Schüker is unmarked.
08:45Well, a spell of pressure from West Ham
08:51and almost reward at the end of it.
08:54Schüker will be fretting that there wasn't.
09:15One goal, one goal.
09:17Scherringham.
09:20To the benefit of Michael Silvestre.
09:25Keane.
09:27Beckham.
09:29Scholes well aware of
09:31the possibilities offered by Phil Neville's positioning.
09:35And in turn for Beckham.
09:37He's disguised that pass to Keane.
09:39Almost took the captain by surprise.
09:42Closing down by Winterberg.
09:46And that led to Manchester United losing possession in the end.
09:49Xhaka Hizlop
09:51who's not distinguished himself in the two games so far.
09:54But in his defence
09:56he's not really ready to
09:59step back into the big league.
10:02Craig Forrest is out.
10:04Injured still.
10:05And out of his goal here is Barthez.
10:07Now what could Di Canio do?
10:09Well he had the chance.
10:11For him you have to say that is an opportunity.
10:17Xabi and Barthez
10:19left stranded
10:21when
10:23Silvestre hooked the ball away
10:25and Di Canio
10:27with the
10:29goal to aim at.
10:30The slice there
10:32let Manchester United off the hook.
10:35Margas.
10:36Cole.
10:39As I said at the start
10:40there have been no complaints really about
10:42the way West Ham have been playing
10:44from Harry Redknapp and his coaching staff.
10:46Changes today
10:48made through
10:49injury.
10:50Panute, the French forward who's
10:53been well received here.
10:54He's one of the absentees.
10:59It's allowed Di Canio to play further forward.
11:05And now
11:06Di Canio
11:10Margas.
11:13Headed in by Pearce.
11:15Gary Neville.
11:16Lomas!
11:17Oh, it was going in on the dip.
11:19Until Barthez had his say.
11:23Well some stirring deeds from
11:26West Ham at the moment.
11:29Being matched by Manchester United and
11:32the champions being stretched here at Upton Park.
11:34But Beckham steers away the corner.
11:43Nice.
11:45Not a relaxing spell for Sir Alec at the moment
11:48as you can see.
11:49West Ham use
11:51these remaining seconds of the first half
11:53for their advantage.
11:54They press well after going behind early.
11:59Lomas.
12:00Quite as good as his
12:02effort that was dipping under the bar
12:04before Barthez turned it over a few minutes ago.
12:11It's fair to say that the manager of Manchester United
12:13might have a
12:15few critical words during the half-time break.
12:18Steve McLaren pen-poised
12:20has been jotting down his thoughts.
12:25Jim Ryan
12:27on the extreme right of your picture.
12:32It is half-time that's right.
12:35Ball by Dermot Gallagher who has been inconspicuous
12:37but gave quite properly
12:39the free kick to Manchester United
12:41that led to David Beckham scoring the only goal
12:43of the first half.
12:45Tentative times for West Ham early on
12:47given their previous results in the
12:49two earlier games this season.
12:50But I must say after that
12:52they played very positively
12:54and will probably feel they were worth an equaliser.
12:56But they haven't got one as yet.
12:58At home they've got a chance.
13:00At half-time here at Upton Park
13:02West Ham 0 Manchester United 1.
13:19West Ham will want to
13:21pick up the impetus that they showed over the
13:23second part of the first half
13:25as quickly as possible.
13:28Beckham in the right place
13:30defensively again.
13:33Steematch.
13:46Cole.
13:47Lovely elasticity of movement.
13:49And it's Joe Cole for West Ham.
13:51Di Canio.
13:52Paulo Di Canio.
13:55And Henning Berg
13:57no sooner on than very much
13:59in the firing line there.
14:07But more heartwarming
14:09play to encourage the home
14:11supporters. Steematch.
14:15He pounds the ground in frustration.
14:18Well the tally of chances
14:20rising for West Ham.
14:23Well it was very close.
14:25But here's Giggs.
14:27Lomas comes back. Cole.
14:29Goalkeeper's got a hand to it. 2-0.
14:35Smash and grab from Manchester United
14:37at the start of the second half.
14:42Beckham's long ball.
14:44Giggs on the gallop.
14:48And although his lot
14:50thrust up an arm as he fell
14:52he couldn't keep out
14:54Cole's
14:57little side footer
14:59that had enough on it
15:01to go over the line beyond
15:03the despairing efforts from Steve Lomas.
15:10Beckham.
15:16King caught by Carrick.
15:18Schüker.
15:26Individual there I suppose is the
15:28best description for it. Schüker now has gone
15:30forward and gone offside. They
15:32lost some of the shape to their passing.
15:34West Ham they put a lot into this game.
15:36They're also having to deal with the
15:38psychological problem
15:40of staring a third successive
15:42defeat in the face.
15:45Oh look at that.
15:47He wants his players to
15:49get the ball.
15:52Pass it as they have done
15:54at times in this game to trouble Manchester
15:56United to make chances
15:58that haven't been taken.
16:07The battle between Schengen and
16:09Pearce continues.
16:11Not too many words from either competent
16:14and Gallagher
16:16all eyes.
16:21Schüker
16:23trying to get something not off the player who played the
16:25ball but Silvestre.
16:30All the tricks in the book and one or two more besides.
16:35Good pressure by Winterberg. Catching
16:37Beckham in possession. Di Canio.
16:40For Winterberg again.
16:44Well it was
16:46a lung-wrenching run from Winterberg.
16:50And in the act of going for goal
16:52he was challenged.
17:02Cole.
17:08Now Scholes.
17:13Giggs.
17:15No need
17:17to rush it for Manchester United.
17:20Giggs again.
17:22Trying to get in there.
17:24Look at Winterberg.
17:26He might be out of position.
17:28Well he made sure he wasn't.
17:31By going in with great energy
17:33and enterprise.
17:36Getting a great response from
17:38part of a crowd of
17:40just under 26,000
17:42at Upton Park.
17:45Just had another going to sleep at the corner.
17:48Beckham.
17:50Stunned to sleep.
17:54He withstood the impact.
17:59Scheringer. Keane.
18:03Scheringer again. Roy Keane. Out comes his lot.
18:06Didn't claim it and he's not
18:08back on his feet. Keane come
18:10put it back into an area where
18:12Manchester United were better represented
18:14than West Ham were with their goalkeeper.
18:17Coming off his line.
18:20And a painful blow
18:22to add to his
18:24other problems. I saw Achilles tendon.
18:26General shortage of match fitness after that broken leg.
18:38Shuker.
18:57Shuker.
18:59Booked.
19:03Wanting West Ham to
19:05reduce the odds
19:07of a recovery.
19:11Reduce the chances of a recovery.
19:13Even more by going down to 10 men.
19:15But he's had
19:17a match in which he's always been in
19:19control, Dermot Gallagher.
19:21Without having to lay down the law too much.
19:23Dematch coming in to try and represent his
19:25fellow countrymen.
19:32Silvestre gives the ball straight to Winterberg.
19:342-0 to Manchester United.
19:36Joe Cole on the ball for West Ham.
19:38Just over 5 minutes to go.
19:43Prepared to take on Scholes. And others!
19:46Penalty!
19:48Reward
19:50for not giving up the ghost here.
19:55For this young man with
19:57prodigious talents. Henningberg
19:59caught him inside the area.
20:03And West Ham have a penalty.
20:07It's going to be Di Canio against
20:09Barthez.
20:12Manchester United
20:14weren't exactly in cruise mode
20:16but they really could be pegged back now
20:18into a nail-biting finish.
20:20It's 2-1. Di Canio does the necessary.
20:31Barthez flung himself to his right.
20:33Di Canio hit it pretty much down the centre.
20:37Forward
20:39by Gary Neville.
20:41But
20:43plenty of plaudits for Joe Cole
20:45who earned the penalty
20:47for West Ham.
20:49Basilar forward.
20:51Henningberg's header away.
20:53In goes the steamatch. Keane.
20:55Beckham.
20:59Giggs.
21:01Header
21:03away.
21:06Andy Cole drifting left.
21:08Manchester United not sitting back.
21:10It's not their way. They'll look to get their two-goal cushion
21:12back. Giggs.
21:16For Beckham. He lets it run.
21:18Scholes but Joe Cole is there.
21:20Philip Neville.
21:22Scholes.
21:36Carrick.
21:46Here's Joe Cole again.
21:51Looking for Di Canio.
21:55And it's miscued by Silvestre.
21:57Goal!
21:59Suarez claiming it.
22:01It doesn't matter
22:03for West Ham.
22:05They are level.
22:07And Joe Cole involved again.
22:11Di Canio, Silvestre, Schüker
22:15and Steve Lomas made absolutely sure.
22:192-2.
22:21Great scenes here at Upton Park.
22:23Unless you're a lover of Manchester United
22:25who have let a 2-0 lead
22:27slip in the closing minutes.
22:29Let's hope for number 9.
22:31Nobby Schüker!
22:57Goal!
22:59Goal!
23:01Goal!
23:05Oh, Sheringham!
23:07I don't know how much of a touch he got, if at all.
23:09The ball struck the frame of the goal.
23:11That bend from Beckham.
23:15In went Sheringham.
23:19Ball hits the junction of crossbar and post.
23:21Keane in the thick of it.
23:27Goal!
23:31Goal!
23:37Neville angry with the Croatian
23:39feeling it was a definite dive
23:41but that had been some.
23:43Not sure that was the most conspicuous
23:47They are going to just settle for the point here.
23:49West Ham or keep Manchester United
23:51on their back foot and hope they can
23:53break them for a third time.
23:55No foul, and this is Kitson.
23:57Berg was the defender, and there's no-one in the centre for West Ham,
24:00and Barthez bellowing at his team-mates.
24:03Monson Avenue out, and Roy Keane supplies it.
24:10Giggs gets away from Karrick.
24:12Manchester United playing like a group of men furious with themselves for letting a lead slip.
24:17And Beckham can regain it right at the last.
24:19He's hit the post!
24:20It's back with Giggs.
24:22CHEERING
24:24A phenomenal finish, because it's Di Canio.
24:29And here goes Kitson.
24:31Silvestre was quick then and needed to be.
24:34Barthez shows his fancy footwork,
24:37and does nothing for Sir Alec Ferguson's blood pressure.
24:42It's finished.
24:44And West Ham will go off feeling that they've won a match that they've in fact drawn.
24:50The points seemed in the bag for Manchester United,
24:53but they've drawn for the second time in succession.
24:56And West Ham have their first point of the season in the most dramatic of circumstances.
25:02West Ham United 2, Manchester United 2.
25:06So all square at Upton Park, with the Hammers securing their first point of the season.
25:11Harry Redknapp went on to guide the Irons to survival that year
25:15in one of the most competitive campaigns on record.
25:18Manchester United's dominance in England's top flight continued.
25:21They notched up FA Premier League title number seven.
