00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most disliked and lambasted
00:09movie trailers, usually due to intense fan backlash.
00:16Let the cringe begin.
00:18Number 10.
00:19A Minecraft Movie
00:20As of writing, the movie has not even come out.
00:23Yet, the trailer has had Minecraft fans seething.
00:26Based on the very popular game, the film will follow four people as they are sucked into
00:30the world of Minecraft.
00:31This premise, deemed unoriginal by fans, is not the only bone of contention.
00:39From the random Beatles song, to the lack of Minecraft-style animation, to that random
00:43pink sheep, this trailer provided a lot of fodder for haters.
00:46Oh, and Jack Black introducing himself as Steve, while looking very much like Jack Black,
00:50has already become a meme.
00:57Since then, fans have fixed the trailer by either doing their own, or animating it in
01:01the style of Minecraft.
01:02Either way, it's not a good start.
01:06Number 9.
01:07Gods of Egypt
01:08Is there no end to this film's many controversies?
01:11The film faced early backlash for its character posters, revealing white actors playing Egyptian
01:16gods.
01:18The trailer did not make matters any better, triggering a wave of debate on all sides,
01:23with many predicting a flop.
01:24Sure enough, the film became a box office bomb, with negative critical reviews.
01:30Most critiqued the bad script, and unconvincing special effects.
01:34Compounding this, was director Alex Pruys' own complaints about the negative reviews.
01:38It's hard to judge whether a better trailer, or marketing in general, would have eased
01:41the controversy, but it certainly didn't help.
01:47Number 8.
01:49Marvels
01:50Even the biggest studios must eventually fail.
01:52This sequel to the first Captain Marvel movie, was always going to be subject to massive
01:56fan scrutiny.
01:57When the trailer finally came out, it quickly became the MCU's most disliked trailer on
02:03YouTube.
02:04Much of this stemmed from the hate campaign against the lead Brie Larson, prompting review
02:07bombing campaigns for the Marvels, and She-Hulk.
02:11No doubt ingrained sexism and racism also contributed to fan backlash, as the Marvels
02:16would be led by three women, two of whom non-white.
02:19The film suffered at the box office, with mixed critical reviews.
02:22Ironically, a high point noted in the reviews, is the good performances of its leads, which
02:27goes to show.
02:30Number 7.
02:31Warcraft
02:32The power of music cannot be overestimated.
02:42The second trailer for Warcraft, another video game adaptation doomed to failure, was
02:46released in 2016, much to fan skepticism.
02:49It wasn't the CGI or actors that caused alarm, rather, it was the fact that, for some reason,
02:55this second trailer had dubstep?
03:02It was a strange musical decision, especially as the first trailer had more conventional
03:06music for an epic film.
03:07The director even had to assure fans that the film would be fully scored.
03:11Sure enough, there were no musical oddities in the actual movie, but it's strange that
03:15it should happen once, right?
03:21Number 6.
03:22Madame Web
03:23When the Madame Web trailer dropped, fans were quick to point out the many things wrong
03:26with it.
03:27There was a strange line delivery and clunky dialogue.
03:30One line even became a fun meme, although it sadly wasn't in the finished film.
03:38Then there was the fact that the trailer focused more on explaining Cassandra Webb's powers
03:42and, well, the plot, than showing the drama.
03:48The incompetence of it all had some speculating that it was all very much on purpose.
03:52After the film was finally released, it had poor box office performance and negative critical
03:56reviews.
03:57Researching spiders in the Amazon was a bad idea.
04:02Number 5.
04:04Snow White
04:05The trailers for Disney's live-action reboots haven't had the best reception.
04:08Just ask the latest Aladdin remake.
04:10Pretty much everything about the trailer and the marketing for Disney's Snow White reboot
04:14has been off.
04:15From the set photos to human actors being replaced by CGI dwarfs, it's been a lot.
04:24While Rachel Zegler's casting ignited some controversy, her glib comments on the changes
04:28to modernize the story have been the main point of contention.
04:35Disney could, in theory, surprise us all, but at this point, does anyone believe this
04:40film will be a successful remake?
04:49Number 4.
04:50Artemis Fowl
04:51The trailer for Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of this popular middle-grade novel left much
04:55to be desired, according to fans.
05:01It immediately raised concerns that the film would not follow the source material.
05:04For one thing, the film seemed to have turned criminal mastermind and genius Artemis Fowl
05:09into yet another good YA protagonist about to come of age.
05:13Fans were also put off by the casting of the Eurasian butler as Black, while nut-brown-skinned
05:17fairy Holly was played by a white actress.
05:23Sure enough, the actual film is as far from the novel as can be, becoming yet another
05:27YA adventure, and a badly done one, too.
05:32Number 3.
05:33Cats
05:35Ah, Cats.
05:36It never wears us out with the infinite variety of its incompetence.
05:39Unfortunately, intimations of Cats' horror were apparent just by the trailer alone.
05:45Fans and regular audiences alike were horrified by the mix of two literal CGI and live-action
05:50actors verging on uncanny valley.
05:52The changes to the source material did not please the fans, and the singing was nothing
05:56to write home about either.
06:01Sure enough, when the film was finally released, fans were treated to more of the same, except
06:06longer and even worse.
06:08This star-studded ensemble was wasted on a film like this.
06:13Number 2.
06:14The Last Airbender
06:15Speaking of fan ire and disappointment, there was probably none greater than for The Last
06:19Airbender.
06:20Based on the popular animated series, the film's trailer was released to controversy,
06:25once again for whitewashing nature.
06:32Fans did not appreciate the Inuit-inspired Sokka and Katara being played by white actors.
06:37The trailers also showcased the weak bending and poor script early on, particularly its
06:41reliance on dialogue exposition.
06:47The film was eventually released to terrible box office performance and even poorer critical
06:51reviews.
06:52Netflix's attempt to adapt the show was received much better, although that's not
06:56saying much.

07:15Number 1.
07:16Ghostbusters
07:17This film really did not have a chance, did it?
07:20Granted, the fact that this reboot would have an all-female cast was enough to piss
07:24off the more chauvinist fans.
07:26The trailer's bad jokes did not help matters, and the reception was overall… not good.
07:36For a period, Ghostbusters was the most disliked movie trailer on YouTube, a milestone since
07:41surpassed by Bollywood's Sattic 2.
07:43Unfortunately, the film itself did not do well at the box office, subject to a review
07:47bombing campaign.
07:52Poor Leslie Jones got particularly bad hate.
07:54It was so bad that the film itself shot additional meta-scenes addressing the controversy.
07:59At least it did fairly well with the critics.
08:05What other movie trailers made you lose faith in Hollywood, or at least its marketing departments?
