00:01:30During the summer, Chelsea manager Ian Porterfield
00:01:33made several attempts at signing big-name players,
00:01:35but all efforts failed.
00:01:37Don Howe was brought in, though, to lead the coaching staff,
00:01:40his wise old head and vast experience
00:01:42certainly welcomed by the players.
00:01:44On their way out of Stamford Bridge during the summer
00:01:47were Jason Cundy to Spurs for £800,000,
00:01:50Kerry Dixon to Southampton for £575,000,
00:01:53and also to the Del Ken, Monkhow, the fee, £850,000.
00:01:58In a hectic few days before the season's kick-off,
00:02:01Mick Harford joined Chelsea for £300,000 from Luton Town.
00:02:06For half that sum, Mal Donaghy left Manchester United.
00:02:09The undersized and underrated striker John Spencer
00:02:12left Rangers for £450,000,
00:02:14and fellow Scot Robert Fleck was sold by Norwich for £2.1 million.
00:02:18I think Chelsea, they were good, they always seemed to be interested in me.
00:02:23They were all the clubs that were mucking me about,
00:02:25and I kept on and told Chelsea this, Chelsea that,
00:02:28so obviously I had to come here.
00:02:31The arrival of four new players
00:02:33brought a special air of excitement to the first match of the season.
00:02:36Matchday programmes sold out
00:02:38before the visitors' Oldham Athletic had even arrived.
00:02:44An expectant crowd awaited sight of three of the four new signings,
00:02:48as club captain Andy Townsend led out Chelsea for the big kick-off.

00:06:05It's Newton, Vinnie Jones, trying the longer approach this time,
00:06:09though Martial should have this one under control,
00:06:11or Eitwish, just nicked away from him,
00:06:13might just give a chance to McHalford!
00:06:15Glorious strike, and the former England man has opened his account for Chelsea.
00:06:20Six minutes to go, and it's Chelsea 1-0 Oldham,
00:06:24and the first goal of his Chelsea career for the new boy McHalford.
00:06:30A marvellous moment for him,
00:06:32and I wonder if that's going to be enough for Chelsea to win the three points.
00:06:44Oldham have so little time left in which to save something now
00:06:48from their trip to London.
00:06:51Paul Elliott there, rather crashing into the back of the opponent,
00:06:55and that must be a free kick, five minutes left.
00:06:59Andy Barlow, hopping up into that penalty area,
00:07:02that's Elliott's clearing header, only as far as Steve Redmond,
00:07:05a new signing from Manchester City,
00:07:07Elliott should be there again for Chelsea.
00:07:10Still it's not quite away.
00:07:14Then pump forward once more,
00:07:16Dave Bessett coming outside of his area,
00:07:18oh, and he makes something of a hash of that,
00:07:20and it might give Nick Henry a chance!
00:07:22It's going to be an equaliser, and calamity for Dave Bessett.
00:07:26Four minutes left, and it's 1-1.
00:07:31And there is the final whistle,
00:07:33and it's disappointment really for Chelsea,
00:07:35because having gone ahead with that goal just five minutes from time
00:07:39from McHalford, they look good value for the three points.
00:07:44But it wasn't to be in the end,
00:07:45because that mistake by goalkeeper Dave Bessett
00:07:48means that Oldham will go away with a point here,
00:07:51and Bessett has to reflect on his mistake.
00:07:56That's his free kick, and we're planted in here by Hall,
00:07:58looking for the head of Paul Elliott there,
00:08:00and a good stop from Brian Gunn.
00:08:04Passing out Townsend this time,
00:08:05it's laid back by Halford, Stuart,
00:08:07and Andy Townsend in an intelligent position by him,
00:08:10he needs a good ball in, and a good ball it is as well!
00:08:13And Graham Stuart gives Chelsea the lead.
00:08:16Norwich nil, Chelsea one.
00:08:22Picked out David Phillips this time,
00:08:23and the Welsh international, looking to find a way through here,
00:08:26gets it onto the right foot,
00:08:28oh, what a blast from David Phillips,
00:08:30and Norwich are level.
00:08:36Hall, this time trying to clear for Chelsea,
00:08:38and it's going to come straight back at them as well,
00:08:41here's Gary Megson now,
00:08:42and that's a useful ball over the top,
00:08:43and Robbins is onside,
00:08:45and a delightful touch, and that's two in two minutes.
00:08:50Another Wednesday taken by Worthington,
00:08:52and it's found Hurst at the back post,
00:08:54and David Hurst, it's gone through,
00:08:56I think the final touch was probably from Paul Williams,
00:08:59but Hurst takes the congratulations
00:09:01of the Sheffield Wednesday players,
00:09:03and Wednesday in front, on 26 minutes.
00:09:07We'll see it again now,
00:09:08as Worthington's cross is flicked on,
00:09:10and Hurst in plenty of space at the back post,
00:09:13with time to check and rifle the ball back in there,
00:09:16and it crossed the line off Williams.
00:09:20Wednesday's throw,
00:09:21and Hurst inside the Chelsea penalty area,
00:09:23oh, he's brought clattering down by Steve Clarke,
00:09:25and the penalty is given by Mr Dilkes.
00:09:28He has no hesitation,
00:09:30and it's a penalty for Wednesday.
00:09:34So it's David Hurst against Dave Besant,
00:09:36Hurst on the left foot, trusty as always,
00:09:39and Wednesday lead 2-0.
00:09:42So the free kick here,
00:09:43they'll be looking for Paul Elliott,
00:09:45and Elliott's in there, and Jones is in there too,
00:09:47and Vinnie Jones has poached a goal for Chelsea,
00:09:50they've got one back.
00:09:52It's 2-1 now, Paul Elliott certainly played his part,
00:09:55but Vinnie Jones claims the goal,
00:09:58and three minutes into the second half,
00:10:00Chelsea have reduced the arrears,
00:10:02a well-placed free kick this one,
00:10:04Paul Elliott getting in there,
00:10:06and Jones, from no more than two yards out,
00:10:08makes it 2-1.
00:10:14Lobbed back in by Warhurst,
00:10:16and it's away as far as Graeme Stewart,
00:10:18and he's got plenty of room here,
00:10:20and sets off on a canter over the halfway line,
00:10:22and the Wednesday defender's sort of melting away from him,
00:10:25and Stewart has gone a long way here,
00:10:27oh, brilliant run by Stewart,
00:10:29and that's a fabulous goal,
00:10:31and Graeme Stewart has a right to celebrate,
00:10:34that's one of the best goals you'll see all season.
00:10:37A really fabulous effort from Stewart,
00:10:40it must be the best of his career,
00:10:42he's gone all of 60 yards here,
00:10:44carrying the ball on,
00:10:46the Wednesday defender just didn't seem to know how to stop him,
00:10:49on and on he went, past Warhurst,
00:10:51and slides it beautifully past Chris Woods.
00:10:542-2.
00:11:02The Wednesday fans have seen Chelsea come right back into this game,
00:11:05and they might get even further back into it now,
00:11:07Eddie Newton, Chelsea in front,
00:11:09and what a remarkable comeback this one is,
00:11:12that's three goals in 60 minutes,
00:11:14and from being two down,
00:11:16Chelsea now have their noses in front at 3-2,
00:11:20Eddie Newton.
00:11:22Thomas Francis looking to be the saviour of Wednesday yet again,
00:11:25and he's got into a good position here,
00:11:27and the cross is deep, and Hurst is in there,
00:11:29and Danny Wilson has scored.
00:11:31The ball came back off Mal Donaghy,
00:11:33and Danny Wilson has now made it Sheppey Wednesday 3,
00:11:37Chelsea 3, what a game.
00:11:39High-spending Blackburn Rovers,
00:11:41whose season got off to a roaring start,
00:11:43with the next visitors to the bridge,
00:11:45in what proved to be a match of missed opportunities.
00:11:52Mike Newell, and the long ball finds Alan Shearer here,
00:11:55edge of the Chelsea penalty area,
00:11:57Donaghy, he's turned it back for Ripley,
00:11:59and a flashing shot from Stuart Ripley,
00:12:01just wide of the right-hand upright,
00:12:03but a good effort from the former Middlesbrough man.
00:12:07Donaghy looking for the searching ball this time,
00:12:10and it's one in the air,
00:12:11and it's coming down here for Robert Flick,
00:12:13and he swivels and shoots,
00:12:14but still can't get his first goal in a Chelsea shirt.
00:12:19That's a neat little flick inside Newell to Shearer,
00:12:22and that's opened things up,
00:12:23and here comes Mark Atkins,
00:12:25and Mark Atkins is denied by the fingertips of Dave Besant.
00:12:28Good opportunity, Atkins couldn't take it.
00:12:34So Ripley will take the corner kick for Blackburn Rovers,
00:12:37still the deadlock hasn't been broken in the game,
00:12:39it could be here now,
00:12:40but I think the whistle's already gone,
00:12:42as Shearer puts the ball into the net.
00:12:46Chelsea's free kick, and Wise and Jones are there,
00:12:49and here's Andy Townsend,
00:12:50and it takes a deflection,
00:12:51and Harford!
00:12:52Oh, what a miss by Mick Harford.
00:12:55No wonder he looks crestfallen, still 0-0.
00:12:59The next visitors to the bridge were QPR,
00:13:02top of the table,
00:13:03led out by skipper Ray Wilkins,
00:13:04who received a warm reception from the Chelsea faithful.
00:13:11Chelsea continuing to apply the pressure here,
00:13:13Vidi Jones on the ball,
00:13:14and they're looking for Harford,
00:13:16in the corner of the penalty box,
00:13:18this is Darren Peacock pursuing Harford all the way,
00:13:20might get support from Andy Townsend,
00:13:22who's got past Peacock,
00:13:23and whips the ball across here.
00:13:25It's going to come back for Harford,
00:13:27and a mistake from Steshkel,
00:13:29Chelsea have the lead,
00:13:30and it's that man Harford again.
00:13:38Harford's long ball upfield,
00:13:40and it's going to be Peacock again,
00:13:42harried by Wise,
00:13:43and Steshkel taking something of a risk here,
00:13:46and having to show his footballing prowess,
00:13:48but the Queen's Park Rangers' hearts
00:13:50will have been fluttering a little quicker there,
00:13:52and it's going to come down for Townsend once more,
00:13:55can't find a way through, Stuart Might,
00:13:58and here's another chance for Chelsea,
00:14:00just to turn the screw a little further,
00:14:02played out wide right,
00:14:04and it's across the face of goal,
00:14:06another chance gone,
00:14:07Harford just couldn't get on the end of it.
00:14:15Steshkel, not a good clearance,
00:14:17but it met the head of David Bardsley,
00:14:19might still provide something for Rangers here,
00:14:22and there's going to be an opportunity for Les Ferdinand,
00:14:24who gets past the first defender,
00:14:25shoots wide,
00:14:26and agony in the Rangers' ranks.
00:14:36With the season barely a month old,
00:14:38Chelsea fans had to say goodbye to Vinnie Jones,
00:14:40he returned to his spiritual home of Wimbledon
00:14:43for £700,000.
00:14:46Nigel Spackman found the welcoming mat
00:14:48awaiting him on his return to Chelsea
00:14:50from north of the border,
00:14:51the fee for him, £485,000.
00:14:57Defender Anthony Barner signed from Charlton
00:14:59for £350,000.
00:15:03And another Scott from Moreton,
00:15:05David Hopkin for £300,000.
00:15:10Aston Villa have started promisingly in this match,
00:15:12and Earl Barrett has the chance to play this ball up there
00:15:15into the heart of the Chelsea penalty area,
00:15:17Elliot getting underneath it just a little bit,
00:15:19it might fall here for Kevin Richardson!
00:15:22Superb strike by Kevin Richardson,
00:15:24and Villa have the lead.
00:15:30Crescent taking the free kick,
00:15:31and he hammers it a long way up there
00:15:33towards the edge of the Aston Villa penalty area,
00:15:35that's Newton's little nudge too,
00:15:36couldn't find Harford,
00:15:37wise challenging for it.
00:15:39Back in there by Hall,
00:15:40there might be still a chance here now,
00:15:42and it is,
00:15:43it's a first goal for Robert Fleck for Chelsea,
00:15:46and isn't he pleased?
00:15:55Looking for Harford as he always does,
00:15:56it's taken on by Newton,
00:15:58who might just get in here,
00:15:59that's beautifully done by Eddie Newton,
00:16:01and Chelsea now have the lead.
00:16:07Newton really has established himself
00:16:09in the Chelsea side so far this season,
00:16:11and he's laid a good ball forward here for Fleck as well,
00:16:13and tries to get back in there,
00:16:15it doesn't come to him,
00:16:16it might come to Wise,
00:16:17it does,
00:16:183-1,
00:16:19and Dennis Wise,
00:16:20surely,
00:16:21has confirmed a victory now for Chelsea here,
00:16:24a goal behind,
00:16:25they now lead Aston Villa
00:16:27by three goals to one.
00:16:33Chelsea really broke their hoodoo
00:16:34on this ground last season,
00:16:35with that 2-1 victory,
00:16:37they're having to defend again now,
00:16:39Paul Elliott sweeping the ball forward,
00:16:41David Burrows here,
00:16:42being pursued,
00:16:44but manages to do enough to get the ball away,
00:16:46it comes only as far as Newton,
00:16:50and now the Liverpool break,
00:16:51could be, oh, that looks an awful collision,
00:16:53and Paul Elliott stays down,
00:16:55and the look of anguish on his face
00:16:57tells us it must be serious,
00:16:59an immediate concern on the faces of all the players around,
00:17:02and Bob Ward, the physiotherapist,
00:17:04was on the pitch in lightning quick time,
00:17:06summoned by referee John Key,
00:17:09I have to say,
00:17:10the challenge from Saunders didn't look a good one,
00:17:13it's not nice to hear the Liverpool supporters
00:17:15chanting Dino, Dino like that either,
00:17:18and Elliott is clearly in utter agony,
00:17:22and Chelsea must be worried that he could be out
00:17:24for a long time with this,
00:17:29so the free kick for Liverpool,
00:17:30Burrows lining himself up,
00:17:34there's some real atmosphere about this match now,
00:17:36and Lee comes over,
00:17:37oh, and he confronts Saunders,
00:17:39and you have to say,
00:17:40that tackle was born of revenge by David Lee,
00:17:43and he will be spoken to by referee Key,
00:17:48Liverpool's free kick,
00:17:49what can they do from it,
00:17:54Chelsea just forming up the two-man wall,
00:17:56and it's flicked in by Dean Saunders,
00:17:58he really glided that ball home,
00:18:00and he accepts the handshakes,
00:18:02and Liverpool are in front,
00:18:04I wonder will it be his last goal for the club,
00:18:07Mulby,
00:18:09badly directed indeed,
00:18:11and it's given Eddie Newton a chance to run at Liverpool's defence,
00:18:14Fleck, has he got the pace to get around Jones,
00:18:17he has, good work by Robert Fleck,
00:18:19men waiting in the middle,
00:18:20including Halford,
00:18:221-1,
00:18:23and Mick Halford,
00:18:24gets his third of the season for Chelsea,
00:18:30headed away once more,
00:18:32not very far,
00:18:33Andy Townsend to pick it up there,
00:18:35a little wise,
00:18:36who loves to scurry and take on the defences,
00:18:39as he does now,
00:18:40gets that ball in for Halford,
00:18:41and it's gone through to David James,
00:18:48challenge won this time,
00:18:49but the ball lands handily for Mark Walters,
00:18:51he's got some space down on this touchline,
00:18:53Fleck coming back,
00:18:55to try and dispossess him,
00:18:56and Walters will look for a way round,
00:18:58oh he's managed to find a way through,
00:19:00never mind, good work from Mark Walters,
00:19:02oh Besson's missed it,
00:19:03and it's going to be a goal,
00:19:04and a winner surely,
00:19:06from Jamie Redknapp,
00:19:15oh an important intervention by Dave Besson,
00:19:17who comes way outside his area,
00:19:19to effect the clearance,
00:19:20and does well,
00:19:21he's found Robert Fleck up there too,
00:19:23good little build up this from Chelsea,
00:19:25and the fine ball threading through,
00:19:26wise to Fleck,
00:19:27and surely a chance for Halford,
00:19:29and Chelsea in front,
00:19:31with a goal from Mick Halford,
00:19:33beautifully engineered,
00:19:37so the long clearance from Besson,
00:19:39headed away,
00:19:42the defenders struggling to get that ball clear however,
00:19:44and Wise has chipped a delicate little ball over to Andy Townsend,
00:19:47and that's 2-0,
00:19:49beautifully taken by Townsend,
00:19:51lovely ball from Wise,
00:19:57Brook and Culverhouse combining down the right hand side here,
00:20:00and more problems for Chelsea,
00:20:01perhaps in the middle,
00:20:02oh,
00:20:03oh an awful mistake by Besson,
00:20:04allowing Robins to score,
00:20:09towards the centre of the penalty area,
00:20:12but again,
00:20:13Norwich City managing to get themselves free from trouble,
00:20:16and Culverhouse is the defender who brings it away once more,
00:20:19down the line he'll try and find Newman,
00:20:21oh and Newman barges away the opposition,
00:20:23to continue his run,
00:20:25and might set up another for Robins,
00:20:272-2 now,
00:20:28and Mark Robins has got them both for Norwich City,
00:20:41Goss has made a strong and determined run through the middle,
00:20:44finds David Phillips,
00:20:45who's in good form with his shooting boots at the moment,
00:20:47Phillips might just try one from here,
00:20:49does,
00:20:50doesn't pose a problem,
00:20:51oh no,
00:20:52what an awful,
00:20:53calamitous mistake by Besson,
00:20:55a nightmare day for him,
00:20:59no,
00:21:01down the line,
00:21:03and uhm,
00:21:04square ball in George was looking for Townsend,
00:21:06didn't find him,
00:21:07and it's taken on here by Mark Shearer,
00:21:09and he's made the breakthrough to the middle,
00:21:10and Chelsea really struggling,
00:21:12Hitchcock down to it,
00:21:13one shot and he'll score,
00:21:14excellent work by Hitchcock to prevent him,
00:21:20so the free kick here in a position of some danger obviously
00:21:24to Manchester City,
00:21:26Chelsea have been working on this sort of situation and Lee might get a goal for Chelsea
00:21:31Now Harford has Lee initially and Harford gets another one
00:21:36At the Beskitt Stadium Chelsea cruise to a comfortable victory against Walsall
00:21:40Dennis Wise volleyed Chelsea in front after a defensive lapse
00:21:4611 minutes later a flowing Chelsea move ended with Nick Harford's shot saved by Mark Gale
00:21:52Eddie Newton pounced on the rebound
00:21:5712 minutes from time Andy Townsend added a third
00:22:01And Chelsea's last two visits to Walsall they won 7-0 and 5-0
00:22:06So a 3-0 defeat was at least a big improvement for the home side
00:22:15Wally plays around this
00:22:17Spackman's there, Townsend is there, Dennis Wise is there
00:22:21And it's going to be reversed to Lee and a thumping shot from Lee
00:22:24I think it flicked the upright, so unlucky David Lee not to score
00:22:33So the corner kick taken might cause a bit of confusion back there for Chelsea
00:22:37Headed straight up in the air by Newton
00:22:39And now it's come across and there must be a great chance for Bannister
00:22:43Oh he failed with his attempted chip, Hitchcock stood his ground well
00:22:48So down the touchline goes Graham Stewart
00:22:52A long loping ball in finds Harford
00:22:55And Crossley diving to his right effecting the stop
00:23:09Dixon in his usual right back position
00:23:14England man and now it's threaded through towards Kevin Campbell
00:23:18On an important challenge one
00:23:20But still comes Merson
00:23:22Brilliantly done by Paul Merson
00:23:24Typical Merson goal
00:23:26A delightful chip
00:23:35On the half way line that was Ian Wright stretching for it
00:23:38And the tackle with Townsend has left him right down there
00:23:41And Campbell comes on and Campbell falls down inside the penalty area
00:23:44Screams for the award
00:23:46And Kevin Campbell has won the penalty which Lee Dixon will attempt to convert now for Arsenal
00:23:52Trying to put them level and doesn't do so
00:23:55Super stop by Hitchcock, it may have come off the upright too
00:23:59Chelsea continuing to attack down the left with Newton's throw in
00:24:04Townsend couldn't get there, Sinclair knocking it forward again
00:24:07Harford
00:24:08And little Weiss scurrying him to the attack
00:24:13Hoping to get on to the end of something here
00:24:15And Dennis Weiss comes for it and does get on to the end of it
00:24:18He's only a little fellow but my word he gets some goals with his head
00:24:21That's a beauty from Dennis Weiss
00:24:29Limpard on then for Arsenal
00:24:31Let's see what he can do to try and change the course of the game
00:24:35That was the long clearance from Seaman, it's hit up there
00:24:38Alan Smith couldn't get to it
00:24:39Nice looking goal from Hillier
00:24:41Out as far as Limpard
00:24:43So he's immediately getting a touch to the Swede
00:24:46And fires the ball in and there might be a chance for Ian Wright
00:24:49Who stabs it into the net and that's a typical Ian Wright strike for Arsenal
00:24:56Limpard played his part, Wright finished it off
00:25:00And the Swede delighted with his introduction
00:25:06Dennis Weiss will take the corner for Chelsea
00:25:09Looking to build on that 3-0 advantage from the first leg
00:25:12And a thumping header from Sinclair just clears the bar
00:25:21Dennis Weiss who's been instrumental in everything
00:25:23And it might come down here for Graham Stewart
00:25:25Who tries to work an opening for himself
00:25:27Did well, floated it just over the top of the Walsall net
00:25:32Everything so far has come from Dennis Weiss
00:25:35He plies another corner and Sinclair goes for it
00:25:37And Fleck should have done better
00:25:39Good chance missed by Robert Fleck
00:25:43This is Lee bringing it out for Chelsea
00:25:45And a good piercing ball up the middle
00:25:47And here there must be a good chance
00:25:49As Fleck lays it inside for Weiss
00:25:51And West has brought him down and that must be a penalty
00:25:54Yes it is
00:25:55Yes it is
00:25:59So Robert Fleck scores
00:26:01It's 1-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate
00:26:04Chelsea are through
00:26:09Dennis Weiss has taken up a good position and running strong
00:26:11This is a super run by Weiss and lays it off now for Gareth Hall
00:26:15Welsh full-back might just try a dip here and just so
00:26:18And it's sneaked in the inside of the upright
00:26:20A first goal for two and a half years for Gareth Hall
00:26:25Weiss always takes these set pieces
00:26:27Fleck going for it
00:26:28Appears to be bundled over
00:26:29It doesn't matter because Halford has rifled the ball in
00:26:32Fleck was busy appealing for a penalty
00:26:34Halford scored
00:26:39Just ten minutes to go as Johnson swings that ball over
00:26:42And Steve Whitten has got one back for Ipswich now
00:26:44Chelsea 2, Ipswich 1
00:26:49Aaron Barnard with the corner then for Chelsea
00:26:52Surely a chance for Halford
00:26:54And Chelsea in front
00:26:56With a goal from Mick Halford
00:27:02Interesting to see that one again
00:27:04Halford certainly claiming it
00:27:05But there was a feeling it might have gone in off defender Pearce
00:27:09Well it's a moot point
00:27:14Long ball up
00:27:15Felt that quite capably
00:27:17Come to have a lot of pace in their side
00:27:19Haven't been able to use much of it as yet
00:27:21But here's a good chance and the ball's surely going to go in
00:27:23And Robert Rosario will claim the equaliser for Coventry City
00:27:27A scrambled effort
00:27:33And he's free kick
00:27:34Up towards Mick Halford who's always there
00:27:36Always willing and tries to lay something on it
00:27:38Might come now for Graham Stewart
00:27:40And that's a splendid goal by Stewart
00:27:42Who's certainly getting his share for Chelsea this season
00:27:50So after all the mayhem
00:27:52Dennis Wise will deliver this free kick
00:27:54Chelsea need something from this
00:27:55Can they get it?
00:27:56They can!
00:27:57Frank Sinclair
00:27:58His first goal of the season
00:28:00And a terrific one too for Chelsea
00:28:0630,000 fans going wild
00:28:08And this is why the ball delivered in by Wise
00:28:10And a perfect header from Frank Sinclair
00:28:15Quinn
00:28:17It's off for John Beresford
00:28:18The left back
00:28:19Samford Portsmouth at the start of this season
00:28:21That's a useful ball in
00:28:22And here's an equaliser from Robert Lee
00:28:25His first for the club since his move from Charlton
00:28:31So Dennis Wise with the corner
00:28:33It's going to come all the way back to him as well
00:28:35Needs a good ball in
00:28:36Here's Halford
00:28:37Totally unmarked
00:28:38And Mick Halford has got another one for Chelsea
00:28:41They're back in front at 2-1
00:28:47Eight minutes to go
00:28:49Wise's cross
00:28:50Halford unmarked
00:28:51And he punishes slack marking
00:28:56Ball
00:28:59Townsend
00:29:01With a number of options here
00:29:03It only succeeds in giving it away to Glyn Hodges
00:29:05And Hodges persuades Little John to take on Sinclair
00:29:08Up the middle
00:29:09On goes Little John
00:29:10And Little John has scored for Sheffield United
00:29:13He took that supremely well
00:29:15But Andy Townsend, crestfallen
00:29:19Townsend will be eager to make up for that mistake
00:29:21And he's involved again here
00:29:22Taking on Gannon
00:29:24Another little ball back
00:29:25Perhaps to Townsend
00:29:26He's got him inside Sheffield United's penalty area
00:29:28Andy Townsend with a chance maybe
00:29:30And he takes it
00:29:31An equaliser for Chelsea
00:29:33And Andy Townsend as we'll see from the replay here
00:29:36He was so keen to make amends for his error
00:29:39And he's done so in the perfect manner
00:29:421-1
00:29:46Huge throw down the line
00:29:47And Little John picks it up for Sheffield United
00:29:49And again he takes on Sinclair
00:29:51Pass roll back to Hitchcock
00:29:53Oh he took one touch too many
00:29:55Little John can punish him here
00:29:57Brian Dean coming in
00:29:58And off the upright
00:29:59Brian Dean restores Sheffield United's advantage
00:30:03Hitchcock so upset
00:30:05That Dean who's had a lean time has got the goal
00:30:07Severe ligament damage had already brought Paul Elliot's season to an abrupt end
00:30:19Now he must watch from the sidelines
00:30:21And reflect on that controversial Dean Saunders tackle at Liverpool
00:30:25I just remember really being stretched off
00:30:28And going into the Liverpool physiotherapist room
00:30:32And really realising how much pain there was
00:30:35That's the worst thought in my mind
00:30:38There were fewer laughs in the dressing room
00:30:40Following the departure of club comic Joe Allen to Brentford
00:30:46There's some real width in this attack now
00:30:48Stewart finds Fleck out wide on the right again
00:30:51Good ball in from him
00:30:52It's gone in
00:30:53Turned into his own net by Richard Shaw
00:30:56That's a bonus for Chelsea
00:31:02Lee a long and searching ball
00:31:04And out on that far side as always is Fleck
00:31:06Instantly he's turned it inside here for Graham Stewart
00:31:10A brilliant goal from Graham Stewart
00:31:13Magnificent strike from the youngster
00:31:18Newton
00:31:20With Luna Sinatoff they may find themselves stretched here in defence
00:31:23It's come down to Hufford
00:31:26And that's another glorious goal
00:31:28Three for Chelsea now
00:31:34A longer one this time
00:31:35Finding Eddie McGoldrick maybe, edge of the area
00:31:37And he's brought down by Lee
00:31:39That's a crunching tackle but an illegal one
00:31:43Well so and Wise
00:31:44The free kick will come in here from Sulaco
00:31:47And Eric Young is in
00:31:48And they've got one back
00:31:50Perhaps too little too late though
00:31:52Just a minute from half time
00:31:54As Jackson will contest this ball with Dennis Wise
00:31:56And Wise wins it back for Chelsea as well
00:31:59Now it's going to be reversed here for Mal Donaghy
00:32:02Donaghy deep ball to the back post
00:32:04Hufford waiting for it
00:32:05Here's Mick Hufford
00:32:06The shot saved by Southall
00:32:07But Fleck's there
00:32:09Robert Fleck
00:32:10For Chelsea
00:32:11On the stroke of half time
00:32:13The Scot
00:32:14Who's found goals so scarce since his move from Norwich City
00:32:17Gets a priceless one here
00:32:19Just a minute before half time
00:32:21Chelsea lead 1-0
00:32:23Cheering
00:32:31Fleck inside the Leeds penalty area
00:32:33Gets a good shot in
00:32:34And Luke it's making the stop
00:32:38Paul tying it really running out now
00:32:42Just less than four minutes left
00:32:44As the ball is played up into the Leeds penalty area
00:32:47Here comes Andy Townsend
00:32:48And he may have won it
00:32:51Andy Townsend trying to run to perfection
00:32:54And Leeds pay the penalty
00:32:56Are they to go down again to a late goal
00:32:59It was Hall's ball in
00:33:01There was a bit of a wrestling match there
00:33:03With Newsome involved with Wise
00:33:05Townsend tucked it away
00:33:10Russian goalkeeper Dmitry Karin
00:33:12Signed for Chelsea for £200,000
00:33:14Further payments to follow after 30 and 60 appearances
00:33:20Cheering
00:33:25Well that's the measure of the wind
00:33:27It's a play not beaten by the player
00:33:29But beaten by the conditions
00:33:31Beasley tries to shot
00:33:32Oh they've got conditions
00:33:34Big corner on Kevin Hitchcock
00:33:36The ball was going to the left
00:33:38As Beasley hit it
00:33:39And suddenly the wind caught it
00:33:41And took it to the right
00:33:42Cheering
00:33:51Free kick taken quickly
00:33:52It's Wise with the cross
00:33:54Sinclair still up
00:33:56Leeds header
00:33:58Falls to Fleck
00:33:59He's got a second chance
00:34:00But Keown tight
00:34:01Oh and the goal
00:34:03To Chelsea
00:34:05Well the Everton players are just standing and watching
00:34:09Mick Harford's claiming it
00:34:13Southall has a little bit of time
00:34:14If Harford closes him down
00:34:17Has it a bad ball to Stuart Barlow
00:34:19Just shoved in the back by Sinclair
00:34:28Barlow's shot
00:34:29And a goal
00:34:31Well that's the goal the youngsters been waiting for
00:34:34Ever since he joined Everton
00:34:35Howard Kendall said that when more goal comes for Stuart Barlow
00:34:39They'll come in numbers
00:34:43Free kick to Chelsea
00:34:47And the period of intense pressure from the visitors
00:34:53All since the two clubs made the substitutions
00:34:57Little flick over the top
00:34:58A header
00:34:59And that's been enough in Southall
00:35:03But Graham Stewart
00:35:05Has brought Chelsea back into the game
00:35:08Good ball for Wise
00:35:09Edge of disperse penalty area
00:35:10Here comes Eddie Newton
00:35:11And he scores
00:35:13Eddie Newton
00:35:14Pouncing for Chelsea
00:35:1677 minutes gone
00:35:18Oh he's happy now
00:35:20It's a lovely ball in to him from Dennis Wise
00:35:23And Newton scores
00:35:28Wise architect of the first goal
00:35:30Five minutes to go as he plays it out wide
00:35:32Here again there could be something on again for Chelsea
00:35:35Newton once more can finish it
00:35:37And he's wrapped up the points for Chelsea
00:35:39Two for them
00:35:40Two for Eddie Newton
00:35:45Just a couple of minutes on the clock
00:35:47Oh a dreadful miss kick by Sinclair
00:35:49There could be something on here for Campbell
00:35:51And is he the first ever goal for Campbell
00:35:53It is
00:35:54Consolation for Spurs
00:35:57Fleming knocking it forward
00:35:59I think it's a little bit scrappy
00:36:01Wise trying to come away with it
00:36:02He's muscled out of it
00:36:06Here's Tommy Wright
00:36:07He's gonna try
00:36:08Takes a deflection on the way through
00:36:09And a vital save by Hitchcock
00:36:11Because that might have been creeping in
00:36:13Well that's an even better save than his last one from Kevin Hitchcock
00:36:16I just wonder if Craig Hignett had it sneaked in
00:36:18Whether he'd have been claiming his first goal
00:36:20Watch as Tommy Wright hits it
00:36:21Just there
00:36:22Catches Craig Hignett on the knee
00:36:24Kevin Hitchcock has to be at his very best
00:36:27I bet he would have claimed it as well Hignett
00:36:29You know he needs one for Middlesbrough
00:36:32Yet another Middlesbrough corner
00:36:35Stewart getting it away
00:36:37And another brilliant save
00:36:38Hignett is denied once again
00:36:40And Hitchcock here
00:36:42Well doesn't he love appearing live on Sky
00:36:45He was doing things like this at Manchester City
00:36:47Doesn't he like breaking Craig Hignett's heart
00:36:49This is the third strike
00:36:51In about five minutes that Hitchcock
00:36:53Had to be very very well positioned to see him
00:37:01The up and under from Pollock
00:37:03Lee wins it in the air
00:37:04As he's very well equipped to do at his height
00:37:06Townsend
00:37:07Now Lasseau
00:37:09Hugging this left hand touchline
00:37:10And again looking to run Fleming
00:37:11That's a good looking ball
00:37:13Stewart
00:37:14And this time Pears is the one
00:37:16Forced into the acrobatics
00:37:18Well two goals against Tottenham last week
00:37:20All owed to magnificent crosses
00:37:23And this is another one from Graeme Lasseau
00:37:25Sure you don't have to beat the player
00:37:27Stephen Pears has to be very alert
00:37:33There was nothing in it when these sides met
00:37:35And drew 2-2
00:37:36So who can make a breakthrough now
00:37:38Here comes Andy Townsend
00:37:39Hell bent on doing that
00:37:41And that's hard luck on Townsend
00:37:43Good effort
00:37:49A long looping ball
00:37:50Trying to catch Everton out
00:37:52Fleck has it
00:37:53Edge of the area
00:37:54Tries to tee something up for them here now
00:37:56Lasseau knocking it back
00:37:57And here's a shot
00:37:58And it's crept in
00:38:00From Andy Townsend
00:38:02A bit of a daisy cutter
00:38:04Too good for Southall though
00:38:061-0 Chelsea
00:38:07Through Andy Townsend
00:38:12Townsend tussling for it again
00:38:14Oh and that's an awful tackle
00:38:15And the referee will take some retribution here
00:38:18Probably on Gareth Hall
00:38:20Although I have to say that Billy Kenny too
00:38:22Looked rather intent on some malice
00:38:25But the referee Mr. Borrett
00:38:27Is going to have strong words with Hall
00:38:30And the Welsh international may be fortunate to stay on
00:38:34But if you watch here
00:38:35I think you'll see that Kenny also lifts his foot
00:38:37As he goes in for the challenge there
00:38:39He's jumping as well
00:38:40But he comes off worst
00:38:42Now what is Mr. Borrett going to do?
00:38:44Gareth Hall awaits the verdict
00:38:46And it's a red card
00:38:48And despite the groans
00:38:50From the Chelsea fans
00:38:51Hall can have no complaint
00:38:56So Chelsea reduced to 10 men as Hall goes off
00:38:59And I think Howard Kennel's got a word or two for him as well
00:39:03Is there time left for Everton to rescue this?
00:39:05A corner for them inside the penalty area
00:39:07The ball comes to right out
00:39:09It hit the post
00:39:11It's the cue for Mick Harford
00:39:12The Chelsea striker has told his manager
00:39:15That his calf strain will probably hold up
00:39:17For only about 30 minutes
00:39:19So Ian Porterfield
00:39:20Throws Harford into the battle
00:39:22And he's got 24 minutes in which to make an impact
00:39:26Hitchcock
00:39:27Will restart play with this free kick
00:39:29And no doubt he'll be looking for the head of Harford
00:39:31As the rain teams down here
00:39:33Harford challenged by Pallister
00:39:35The ball breaking
00:39:37And a free kick awarded against Brian McClure
00:39:40Chelsea will want to take this one quickly
00:39:43Andy Townsend
00:39:44Dennis Wise there
00:39:47And Mr. Townsend asking Mr. Lewis to move away
00:39:52So the free kick to be taken square
00:39:54Here comes David Lee
00:39:55And a thumping shot from Lee
00:39:57A goal for Chelsea
00:40:00Schmeichel beat it all ends up
00:40:02It took a deflection
00:40:03And David Lee has got his first Premier League goal
00:40:07Cracking shot
00:40:08The deflection confused Schmeichel
00:40:12Giggs for United as they seek to come back into this one
00:40:14The ball now with Cantona inside the area
00:40:18An equaliser from the Frenchman
00:40:21Eric Cantona can do no wrong for United at the moment
00:40:24And he gets the equaliser
00:40:30Swivelled
00:40:31Shot into the corner
00:40:321-1
00:40:35Throw from Perry Groves
00:40:38Munkau there challenging for it
00:40:39It's going to come back for Groves
00:40:41He loops one in
00:40:42And there might be chances here
00:40:43As it's flicked away off the head to Ian Dowie
00:40:46Dowie a cracking strike
00:40:48And what a good goal for Southampton
00:40:50The knees up for Ian Dowie
00:40:52Good goal
00:40:54Wise for Chelsea
00:40:57Stewart for Chelsea
00:40:58Inside Southampton's penalty area
00:41:00Taking on Adams
00:41:01Whipped over the top of the Southampton crossbar
00:41:06Donegan down the line for Lasseau
00:41:08Who's got the paces he takes on Dodd
00:41:10The cross a good one
00:41:11Here's Stewart
00:41:12And a little dinked header that drifts wide of the upright
00:41:18Chelsea still driving forward looking for this equaliser
00:41:21Here now Wise already past Bernali
00:41:24Might tease somebody up
00:41:26And there's the ball over the top for Wise again
00:41:29Newton tried to play him in
00:41:30Flowers made the stop
00:41:31But he makes another one now from Spencer
00:41:34Two good saves by Tim Flowers
00:41:36In such good form this season
00:41:39Letizia for Southampton
00:41:40If they make it 2-0 the game will be dead
00:41:42And a good save by Hitchcock there
00:41:44From Dodd this altitude
00:41:46Letizia again
00:41:47Hitchcock again
00:41:48Two good stops from the Chelsea keeper
00:41:53Lee driving forward
00:41:54Driving forward
00:41:55Chelsea still coming
00:41:56Still wanting this equaliser
00:41:57Newton's inside the penalty area
00:41:59Eddie Newton
00:42:00He's got one
00:42:02Chelsea at last get the goal
00:42:04And Eddie Newton
00:42:06Has got the fans happy again
00:42:08With the equaliser
00:42:10Chelsea 1 Southampton 1
00:42:12Eddie Newton
00:42:13Man of the moment
00:42:17Fashionewa sweeping ball out here for Laurie Sanchez
00:42:21Just inside Chelsea's penalty area
00:42:23It's coming over towards Earl
00:42:24Knocked straight up in the air
00:42:26Back again for Sanchez
00:42:28Wimbledon getting bodies in there
00:42:29But Chelsea coping
00:42:31Oh it's smacked against Fashionewa by Hall
00:42:33And Fashionewa surely now
00:42:35Now scrambled away for a throw in
00:42:38It looked as though Fashionewa had to score
00:42:43Hardley will take the free kick
00:42:44And he takes it quickly
00:42:45And he'll look for the head maybe of Fashionewa
00:42:47Maybe of Scales
00:42:48And it is Scales to Fashionewa
00:42:49Still it won't go in
00:42:51Scales with the final effort over the top
00:42:58That's a nice looking ball
00:43:00For Fleck
00:43:01And Fleck infield
00:43:02And there's Stewart's shot
00:43:04Well pounced on by Seggers
00:43:11Ball knocked back to Hitchcock
00:43:12Not a good clearance at all
00:43:14It gives Earl a chance to set something up straight away
00:43:17And the coming defender Sinclair
00:43:20Will ask his story
00:43:21Puts his keeper into trouble again
00:43:22And Hitchcock scrambles it out once more
00:43:24As far as Vinnie Jones
00:43:26And a side down by Sinclair
00:43:28Now more than a couple of feet outside the penalty area
00:43:31Well Vinnie Jones has seen it all before
00:43:33And sees the funny side
00:43:40There's a mad tussle going on here
00:43:42And the free kick given up
00:43:43The lights have gone out
00:43:46Well some wags in the crowd
00:43:48Will probably feel that's the best part of the day
00:43:52Please be patient
00:43:53Well the lights
00:43:54Well they're confident that the lights will be back
00:43:56In 57 minutes we shall see
00:43:58Or we won't see as the case may be
00:44:02Normal service restored
00:44:03But it's still 0-0 here
00:44:04As Andy Myers tees one up for Dennis Wise
00:44:07And a great stop by Seggers
00:44:09Wise really caught hold of that one
00:44:12And the Dutchman made a thrilling stop
00:44:15Turned back by Andy Myers
00:44:17And Dennis Wise with his right foot
00:44:19He doesn't often hit them that hard
00:44:24Still these two teams battling away
00:44:28Up the middle it goes
00:44:29And a chance surely for Miller to win it
00:44:31For Wimbledon now
00:44:32Miller
00:44:33Oh an excellent save from Hitchcock
00:44:35He got the palms to it
00:44:37We've just played Man United haven't we
00:44:38And we've drawn with them
00:44:39And I think with the Middlesbrough game away
00:44:41We drew 0-0 and we could have beaten them
00:44:43There's been an awful lot of games
00:44:45A lot of could haves for us this year
00:44:48But we were playing some good football
00:44:50We were playing as good a football as anybody at that time
00:44:53And I think really the actual league title
00:44:57Is very very difficult to win
00:44:59And I think that would have been a difficult task
00:45:04With so many new young faces in
00:45:06For the first time in a season
00:45:09And with the squad we had
00:45:10I don't think it would have perhaps been good enough
00:45:12To go all the way
00:45:16Yeah
00:45:19McGoldrick there for Crystal Palace
00:45:24Oh it's kept in play
00:45:25Very skillfully there by McGoldrick
00:45:27Knocking it long and forward
00:45:29And easy for Sinclair to knock it back
00:45:32Oh it's been held up
00:45:33Exactly as he said
00:45:36Only just
00:45:38And it's Chris Coleman
00:45:42Well
00:45:44Sinclair's back pass
00:45:47Didn't look like reaching Hitchcock
00:45:49It was a dangerous thing to do on this surface
00:45:53He tried to knock it wide
00:45:55All he did was knock it into a pool
00:45:57In comes Coleman
00:45:58And in fact you'll find the ball gets held up
00:46:00And barely crosses the Chelsea line
00:46:03It's spinning it's spinning
00:46:05And just goes over the line
00:46:06And Palace are in the lead
00:46:13McGoldrick
00:46:14Attempting to get it away
00:46:16Newton doing well for Chelsea there
00:46:18Fleck knocking it in again towards Harpet
00:46:20Myers was in there as well
00:46:22And a great save by Martin
00:46:25From Graham Stewart
00:46:29And Chelsea so close to getting that equaliser
00:46:33Thomas having a battle there
00:46:34Townsend brings it away for Chelsea
00:46:37Confronted by McGoldrick
00:46:39Getting it on to the left
00:46:40Fleck
00:46:41The super goal
00:46:421-1
00:46:44Andy Townsend
00:46:47For Chelsea
00:46:55What a super goal
00:46:58Real pace
00:46:59And power
00:47:00And strength
00:47:02Through these sort of areas
00:47:04Just nicking it wide at McGoldrick
00:47:08Getting it on to that favoured left foot of his
00:47:10And banging it past Martin to make it 1-1
00:47:14Moving towards Coleman
00:47:15Eric Young's in there too
00:47:17And Ford tries to get in there
00:47:19And it's over the line
00:47:20And the goal is given
00:47:22George Ender
00:47:26Showed too much of that to Myers
00:47:28But they still got away with it
00:47:29As Humphrey turns it in
00:47:31Ender on the far side
00:47:33Roger coming in as well
00:47:34Just clipping it in
00:47:36And it's another one
00:47:37And this time Grant Watts
00:47:39Has made it 3-1
00:47:46Now reach the last 5 minutes
00:47:48As Brian Lasseau takes the corner for Chelsea
00:47:57Another good shot again
00:47:58By Townsend
00:47:59And a wonderful save once more by Martin
00:48:06Manchester City's Noel Quinn
00:48:07Taking the free kick
00:48:08Oh that was quick thinking
00:48:09And he's released David White
00:48:11And David White
00:48:12Gives Manchester City the lead
00:48:14All down to the quick thinking of Noel Quinn
00:48:20Sheeran
00:48:21For City
00:48:22Leading by a goal to nil already
00:48:24And White's inside that Chelsea penalty area
00:48:26And across the face a goal
00:48:282-0
00:48:29Sheeran started and finished the move
00:48:35Rick Holden
00:48:37Known as the best crosser of a ball
00:48:38But his feeling
00:48:39He might set something up here now
00:48:41He's got in
00:48:42It's an own goal from Steve Clarke
00:48:49Secretive headers
00:48:51Putting that ball through for Lasseau now
00:48:53How Chelsea need a goal
00:48:54They might get one here as well
00:48:56They have from Graham Stewart
00:48:58Is there time now for Chelsea to fight their way back into this one
00:49:0212 minutes left
00:49:07Driven up towards the edge of that Manchester City penalty area
00:49:09Here comes John Spencer
00:49:11Rifles the ball home
00:49:133-2 now
00:49:15Come on he says
00:49:16There is time
00:49:21Long kick from Tony Cota
00:49:23Flicked on towards Niall Quinn
00:49:25Lee shadowing him
00:49:28And City looking to seal their victory
00:49:30Which Sheeran has done
00:49:324-2
00:49:332 for Sheeran
00:49:34Hitchcock helpless
00:49:37Pollock's going to be underneath this one
00:49:40It's a difficult ball to control
00:49:41And it slices away off his boot
00:49:43Might set something up here for Chelsea
00:49:45Lasseau's cross
00:49:46And he's going to go in for an own goal
00:49:48So unlucky Nicky Moan
00:49:50He could do nothing
00:49:51He was facing the wrong way really
00:49:53And diverted the ball into his own net
00:49:59Pollock
00:50:00Trying to make up for his mistake
00:50:01It certainly was that which led to the goal
00:50:03And now Hitchcock's made one
00:50:04And Tommy Wright
00:50:05Could equalise for Middlesbrough
00:50:07Tommy Wright pouncing there
00:50:09To capitalise on Hitchcock's error
00:50:16Free kick from Pollock
00:50:17Driven high into the Chelsea penalty area
00:50:19Where was the marking?
00:50:22Middlesbrough in front
00:50:24Willy Falconer scores
00:50:25And Middlesbrough could be on their way to the fourth round
00:50:28I think the
00:50:30The Palace game
00:50:31Would have had a
00:50:33Looking back
00:50:34Could have had a serious effect on us
00:50:36Because
00:50:37You know that was the first kind of game
00:50:39We'd had up to then
00:50:40That we
00:50:41That we totally dominated and lost
00:50:43You know we totally dominated that match
00:50:45And lost
00:50:46Down to some
00:50:47You know not necessarily bad mistakes
00:50:49I mean Frank bliming the ball
00:50:50You can't always legislate for the ball sticking in the mud
00:50:52Next time he might
00:50:53You know boot it out or whatever
00:50:55But he was only trying to do what
00:50:57What he knows best
00:50:59And
00:51:01You know their keeper performed heroics
00:51:03And everyone gave up
00:51:05120% on that night
00:51:07And couldn't have done a lot more
00:51:09And again the Middlesbrough
00:51:11Now the Middlesbrough game was slightly different
00:51:13That was kind of out of
00:51:15A little bit of
00:51:17Naivety or whatever
00:51:19But it wasn't
00:51:21It wasn't down to
00:51:23Just one of those nights
00:51:24I think we should have had that game sewn up
00:51:28Scott Gemmel looking for the piercing ball
00:51:30The flag stays down
00:51:31He looked yards offside
00:51:32Gary Crosby
00:51:33Surely
00:51:34It's going to be a goal for Gary Bannister
00:51:36But where was the offside flag?
00:51:38They looked yards off
00:51:40Crosby had to be offside
00:51:44Forward come Chelsea once more
00:51:46With Graham Stewart
00:51:48Always wants to take people on Stewart
00:51:50He's improved so much this season
00:51:52And he lays the ball down the line for Townsend
00:51:54Who skips past the first challenge
00:51:56Townsend inside the forest penalty area here
00:51:58Rolling it back and a thumping shot
00:52:00What a good effort that was
00:52:02From Craig Burley
00:52:04So unlucky to hit the ball
00:52:06And then it's played back in again from Newton
00:52:08And it drifts wide of the far upright
00:52:10But Burley was unlucky there
00:52:15Well with the free kick for Forrest
00:52:17And there's a header from Bannister
00:52:19Which has found its way
00:52:21Into the roof of Chelsea's net
00:52:25Two for Forrest and two for Bannister
00:52:29Clough
00:52:31Oh that's a lovely typical ball from Nigel Clough
00:52:34Which gets wound coming away down the left again
00:52:37And here's the ball across the face of the Chelsea goal
00:52:40And that's put the seal on it
00:52:42Orliksson scores
00:52:443-0 for Forrest, what a day for them
00:52:52Looks like a very determined Queen's Park Rangers side
00:52:55Tonight
00:52:56And it's a nice ball played on
00:52:58By Impey and it comes through to Ferdinand
00:53:00Has he got the finish?
00:53:01Great save by Caron
00:53:04Allen
00:53:05Nicely touched off to Holloway
00:53:07Turns inside
00:53:08Nice neat play by Rangers at the moment
00:53:10Onside Ferdinand
00:53:12Can he get to it?
00:53:13Still Ferdinand, the shot
00:53:14Again denied by Dimitri Caron
00:53:21Graham Stewart, Stewart inside
00:53:23And McDonald
00:53:24Getting the ball away
00:53:26Only as far as Graham Stewart
00:53:28Chelsea
00:53:30Looking dangerous
00:53:31Comes over and it's in
00:53:33Chelsea
00:53:34Score, John Spencer
00:53:38John Spencer
00:53:40Gets the goal
00:53:45And Chelsea take the lead
00:53:47In the opening minute of this second half
00:53:50There's a lovely little cross from Graham Stewart
00:53:53In the head of John Spencer
00:53:55Pass
00:53:56Tony Roberts
00:53:58Queen's Park Rangers 0
00:54:00Chelsea 1
00:54:03Now it's Graham Lasseau
00:54:05And Simon Barker back to cover
00:54:07And Danny Maddix
00:54:09Rangers in trouble
00:54:11In defence
00:54:12Could be something on here
00:54:13Spencer again
00:54:14Spencer with the shot
00:54:16And Tony Roberts got his hand down to that
00:54:20And that was going in the near corner
00:54:22And that was it for Tony Roberts
00:54:25Overcomes
00:54:26And a great save
00:54:28What a magnificent save by Tony Roberts
00:54:32Point blank header
00:54:36And the challenge on John Spencer by Devin White
00:54:40His first touch of the game
00:54:42Gets him a booking by the looks of things
00:54:49So Rangers
00:54:51Who've been putting a lot of pressure on Chelsea
00:54:54Can they get an equaliser here?
00:54:56Breford playing it in
00:54:57Maddix
00:54:58Comes across and
00:54:59Yes it's a goal
00:55:01Rangers have equalised
00:55:03Yes
00:55:04It's 1-1
00:55:06And the biggest cheer around
00:55:08Loftus Road
00:55:10Is with
00:55:11Queen's Park Rangers supporters
00:55:13Chelsea are completely silenced
00:55:17In it came
00:55:18The header by Maddix
00:55:20And Bradley Allen
00:55:21Makes it 1-0
00:55:30These two sides figured in a marvellous match at Hillsborough earlier this season
00:55:34That was Warhurst tussling for it then
00:55:36It's clattered away by Sinclair
00:55:38And Parford comes to try and win it for Chelsea
00:55:40Forward again into space and back
00:55:42Williams giving chase
00:55:43And Dimitri Karin here on his home debut putting the ball out
00:55:46Good instinctive response
00:55:48I think Ian Porterfield's told him just to play it safe today
00:55:52He'll throw in
00:55:54Williams again there and here's Worthington's ball in
00:55:57And Warhurst!
00:55:58A brilliant goal!
00:55:59A tremendous strike from a stand-in striker
00:56:02Poor Warhurst
00:56:04He reckons not to like the job too
00:56:07Anybody would have been proud of this one
00:56:09It's a first time effort
00:56:11He doesn't even think twice about it
00:56:13Where most people would have controlled it
00:56:15He just cracks it into the net
00:56:17Stilt corner for Chelsea
00:56:19Woods coming for it
00:56:20Can't really get there here
00:56:21Spencer down!
00:56:22It's kept out on the line
00:56:24By John Sheridan
00:56:25Appeals for a penalty here
00:56:27John Spencer disappointed
00:56:29His shot doesn't count
00:56:30But it's excellent defending by Sheridan on the line
00:56:34Despite those appeals for a penalty
00:56:36He chested it down
00:56:40Gerry Payton on for the second half in place of Dimitri Karin
00:56:44Karin
00:56:46On loan from Everton
00:56:50And now Lassell
00:56:51He slips a knuckle
00:56:53Left Wensley in for a second chance
00:56:55Danny Wilson losing out however to Lassell
00:56:58Plays the ball forward
00:57:00And Sinclair loses out
00:57:02And here now inside the area
00:57:03Harkes and John Harkes
00:57:05Makes it 2-0
00:57:06And Wensley are home and dry
00:57:15Richie for Oldham
00:57:16Oh and it came off Roger Milford
00:57:18And it might have set Nick Henry up
00:57:20Well a goal assist from the referee
00:57:23Henry delighted
00:57:24Referee Milford set him up
00:57:32The mist really coming in now
00:57:34As Oldham have this corner cake
00:57:36And they've got a second goal
00:57:38From the head of Neil Adams
00:57:39Perhaps the Chelsea defenders never saw him in the form
00:57:45Forward again from Henry
00:57:48Diverted back to Hitchcock
00:57:50Who's got to scramble it away
00:57:52Under the challenge of Olney
00:57:54And then Brennan
00:57:55He's lofted one towards the net
00:57:57What a goal from Mark Brennan
00:58:07Sounds it
00:58:09The pitch beginning to churn up a little now
00:58:11As Hall
00:58:12Dicks it inside the penalty area
00:58:14Here now is Flake and cuts it back across
00:58:16For Harford
00:58:17And Harford's got one back for Chelsea
00:58:19Too little too late I fear
00:58:21But it's now Oldham 3 Chelsea 1
00:58:24Mick Harford the scorer
00:58:29Still 0-0 as Barnard plays it forward for Flake
00:58:32Who tries to tee up Barnard again
00:58:34And a great save from David James
00:58:36Just getting his fingertips to Barnard's shot
00:58:42So John Barnes
00:58:43Shouldn't tangle about with him
00:58:44And Barnes to McManaman and McManaman wide
00:58:47That's the best chance Liverpool have had
00:58:52Ball in the hands of Mark Bosnich
00:58:54And he's got a good clearing kick on him
00:58:56That's half way inside the Chelsea half
00:58:59And then the two defenders
00:59:00Make a dreadful mess of it
00:59:02And they've set up Ray Houghton to score
00:59:04Donaghy and Sinclair
00:59:06Really got in each other's way
00:59:08And Ray Houghton nearly joined Chelsea in the summer
00:59:10Gives Villa the lead
00:59:14Well that defeat proved one too many
00:59:16For manager Ian Porterfield
00:59:17Who was sacked following a run of 12 games without a win
00:59:21Defending the decision
00:59:22Chairman Ken Bates said the team had lost as many matches
00:59:25As it had won since Porterfield took charge
00:59:28Back in 1991
00:59:30The players however
00:59:31Were not altogether surprised
00:59:33By the turn of events
00:59:35Ian was a nice fella
00:59:36You know
00:59:37He did what he saw best
00:59:40And in football management
00:59:42You don't get
00:59:43You don't particularly get a
00:59:44A real lengthy crack of the whip if you like
00:59:47If success isn't just round the corner
00:59:50And Ian was purely a victim of that
00:59:53And you know
00:59:54I was obviously a little bit sort of stunned when I first heard
00:59:58But not surprised really
01:00:00Step up ex-Chelsea hero David Webb
01:00:03Called in to manage the team for the rest of the season at least
01:00:06And it was a job he'd always hoped for
01:00:09Has been ever since I packed in playing
01:00:11I mean I always remember when I played
01:00:12I thought well
01:00:13It'd be nice to pack in playing when I'm about 34
01:00:15And go straight in and take over somewhere like Chelsea
01:00:19It's taken a few years longer
01:00:30Moore getting in behind Barnett
01:00:34It's come in
01:00:35It's gone in
01:00:37A free goal for Mike Newell
01:00:39But Blackburn Rovers will say thank you very much for that
01:00:45Blackburn to start the second half
01:00:46Hoping that they will be able to defend
01:00:49As effectively as they have done for much of the season
01:00:53But not in recent weeks
01:00:55But Weggeley
01:00:57And Newell
01:00:58That's handball
01:01:00On the line
01:01:01And Mike Newell
01:01:02A player who was sent off
01:01:05For deliberate handball himself this season
01:01:08At Wimbledon
01:01:09Wonders whether the same fate here
01:01:11Will befall Frank Sinclair
01:01:13Not wonders Martin
01:01:14He's on his way off
01:01:15I feel sure of it
01:01:16He's on his way off
01:01:18It's handball
01:01:19He's gone
01:01:23I think he's even apologising to the referee
01:01:30David Allison
01:01:32Left
01:01:33Under the laws of the game
01:01:35As they stand at the moment
01:01:36With no alternative
01:01:38What a horrific start
01:01:39Again it's not a good header back
01:01:42And he's on it in a flash
01:01:43Roy Weggeley
01:01:44But there you see it
01:01:45The right hand comes up
01:01:46It's off the line
01:01:47The penalty
01:01:48He's off
01:01:50Mike Newell
01:01:51Who had a penalty
01:01:52Saved here recently
01:01:53By Nigel Martin of Crystal Palace
01:01:57Now takes on Kevin Hitchcock
01:01:59Oh and he's missed
01:02:00Woefully
01:02:03Two sides
01:02:04In the second meeting of the season
01:02:06Have only produced the one goal
01:02:08That we've seen today
01:02:09And that was a fluke
01:02:11Oh this could be another one
01:02:13For Newell
01:02:14The goal is gaping for him
01:02:16He must walk it in
01:02:17And he does
01:02:18And Mike Newell
01:02:20Finally makes a major impact
01:02:22On the second half
01:02:24Having had some mishaps
01:02:25And Kenny Dalglish
01:02:26Leads the applause
01:02:28So a disappointing start for David Webb
01:02:30Whose team selection
01:02:31Had raised a few eyebrows
01:02:33People said to me recently
01:02:34Did you pick that team at Blackburn
01:02:36I said yeah I picked it
01:02:38But what I'd done
01:02:39I'd tapped into everybody's thought processes
01:02:42In and around the club
01:02:44And that was a very quick decision for me
01:02:47You know it had to be done
01:02:49But I realised then
01:02:50There was only one way to get out of it
01:02:51And that was to make my own mind up
01:02:53And pick who I wanted to pick
01:02:56And that's exactly how it happened
01:02:59The game didn't go as I'd planned
01:03:02But I got a hell of a lot from that game
01:03:12Graham Lassoe left Chelsea for Blackburn Rovers
01:03:15For £700,000 just prior to the transfer deadline
01:03:18In a deal that also brought striker Steve Livingstone
01:03:21To the bridge for a quarter of a million
01:03:29It was a well timed run
01:03:30And Arsenal could be some business here
01:03:32Here's Flats
01:03:33Besant makes a crucial save
01:03:35And he's going to feel a whole lot better there
01:03:37But Arsenal there
01:03:38Almost came up with the sucker punch
01:03:41Well I said I felt they would offer more
01:03:43As an attacking force
01:03:44And Mark Flats now playing as a front runner
01:03:47Decently times his run to perfection
01:03:49What a fine save from Dave Besant
01:03:51Besant
01:03:57Merson
01:03:58Now there might be something here for Kevin Campbell
01:04:00Campbell is through
01:04:01Can Besant save Chelsea again?
01:04:03He can
01:04:04And Besant is fast becoming the hero of the night
01:04:07Here at Stamford Bridge
01:04:14Sinclair
01:04:16Bursting forward from the back
01:04:18But he's out of position as Campbell
01:04:20Tries to get on the end of this
01:04:21But Bjornsson doing some important covering
01:04:25Chelsea pushing forward
01:04:26Here's Spencer with his first touch
01:04:29Stewart's continued his run
01:04:30Could it be the goal?
01:04:31It is!
01:04:32Chelsea are ahead
01:04:33Graham Stewart's got it
01:04:36Well what a substitution that was
01:04:38What an important part
01:04:39Little John Spencer plays in it
01:04:41But it was in the wide area
01:04:42It started from again
01:04:43I said if they stay wide
01:04:45Stewart will get himself in one against one situations
01:04:48That's what he finds himself
01:04:49No one around him
01:04:50Lederson's been attracted wide here to Hull
01:04:53But watch the way he times the ball to perfection
01:04:56Not a question of offside
01:04:58And what a super cool finish from Stewart
01:05:03Danger here now as Graham Stewart gets inside Everton's area
01:05:06The ball wraps against the upright
01:05:08And this was a very fine effort from Stewart
01:05:11He's so unlucky
01:05:12One for Spencer to chase
01:05:13Hustled by Ablett
01:05:14Edge of the Everton penalty area
01:05:16Cuts it back
01:05:17Stewart's followed in
01:05:18And a goal for Chelsea
01:05:20Graham Stewart
01:05:22Southall could do
01:05:23Not a lot with this
01:05:24Because Spencer had done well
01:05:26It was an angle shot
01:05:27He palmed it out
01:05:28And Stewart followed through
01:05:35I don't know if it was a goal
01:05:37But it was a goal
01:05:38It was a goal
01:05:39It was a goal
01:05:40It was a goal
01:05:41I don't know
01:05:42To Andy Hinchcliffe
01:05:43On the line is Barlow
01:05:45And a good ball in now
01:05:46Might stretch Chelsea
01:05:48It's looping over towards the defence
01:05:50And over the top of them
01:05:51And Kenny
01:05:52Kenny scores
01:05:53Good angle shot from Billy Kenny
01:05:55And Everton have got one back
01:06:01Stewart drifting infield once more
01:06:03On he goes as well
01:06:04Takes it back
01:06:05Was there a handball there?
01:06:06The referee says no
01:06:07So Spencer plays on
01:06:08And on
01:06:09And on
01:06:10It's gone in
01:06:11From John Spencer
01:06:13Everton complaining bitterly here
01:06:15That there was a handball
01:06:16Let's have a look at this
01:06:17As the ball bounced up
01:06:18And it struck the arm if anything
01:06:20But John Spencer didn't worry about that
01:06:22And scores a flying goal
01:06:24Everton meanwhile
01:06:25Continue their protest to referee Boddenham
01:06:30They're going to get into trouble
01:06:31If they continue to argue
01:06:33But referee Boddenham decided
01:06:35There was no handball
01:06:36And Chelsea went on to score
01:06:41CHEERING
01:06:48March would also see the transfer of Mick Harford
01:06:50Who returned to his native Sunderland
01:06:52For £250,000
01:06:54In 8 months at the bridge
01:06:55Mick scored 11 goals in 34 outings
01:06:58And instantly became a crowd favourite
01:07:01His last game was at Crystal Palace
01:07:05Back on from Graeme Stewart towards
01:07:07We John Spencer
01:07:11Spencer finding space to run
01:07:12And he's put Graeme Stewart in here
01:07:13Great chance for Chelsea
01:07:15And Graeme Bobby Stewart
01:07:17Scores for the Blues
01:07:20And it was made for him
01:07:22Quite superbly
01:07:23Graeme Stewart is scoring
01:07:24A lot of goals lately
01:07:26And here it goes
01:07:27Well we saw this combination
01:07:29Produce a victory against Arsenal
01:07:31At Stamford Bridge
01:07:32It's almost a carbon copy of the move
01:07:35Wonderfully weighted ball
01:07:36That was the key to this move
01:07:38Super run from Graeme Stewart
01:07:40But it's the weight of the pass
01:07:42That provides them
01:07:43And enables them to take it first time
01:07:46Palace trying to find a way back
01:07:47Richard Shaw with a throw
01:07:52Southgate with a cross
01:07:53And there it is
01:07:54Crystal Palace equalise
01:07:56And it's Chris Armstrong
01:07:58The million pound man
01:08:00Who gets the goal
01:08:01And adds a billion money on
01:08:03To his already inflated price tag
01:08:07Chris Armstrong ties it up with the Eagles
01:08:12Might be just a bit too far out
01:08:14For Anderton to hit this one
01:08:17Or Naeem
01:08:18And Anderton in fact looped it
01:08:20Across the penalty area
01:08:21Ruddick's got in for it
01:08:22And surely it was a handball there
01:08:24By Erling Johnson
01:08:25Spurs players protest
01:08:26And claim the penalty
01:08:28And it's given by Mr Dilks
01:08:31Up steps Sheringham
01:08:32And that's in
01:08:33A goal for Teddy Sheringham
01:08:37Spurs in front
01:08:41Townsend a surging run from him
01:08:43And the ball looped back to him as well
01:08:45And here comes Cascarino
01:08:47An equaliser for Chelsea
01:08:50Crafted by Townsend
01:08:52Finished by Cascarino
01:08:57A throw taken quickly by Batty
01:08:59Finds Kerslake
01:09:00The recent signing from Swindon
01:09:01Useful ball in
01:09:02Here comes McElroy
01:09:04And a first ever goal
01:09:05From the head of David Wetherill
01:09:11Made off by Donaghy
01:09:12That looked like a foul from Steve Hodge
01:09:14But the referee has wave play on
01:09:15So Chelsea do that
01:09:16And they've plenty of men up here
01:09:18Wise and Clarke involved in the move
01:09:21Wetherill knocking it out
01:09:22Only as far as Wise again
01:09:24And Wise trying to get to the byline
01:09:26Cuts it back
01:09:27There should be an equaliser
01:09:28And a rare goal indeed
01:09:30From Hal Donaghy
01:09:32Oh he loved that
01:09:36Yeah!
01:09:41Linking up nicely with Gareth Hall this time
01:09:43Oh and a lovely dink ball as well from Hall
01:09:45An intelligent run by Stewart
01:09:47It's gone across the face
01:09:48A goal!
01:09:49And it's Mal Donaghy
01:09:51I don't believe it
01:09:52He didn't score for 5 years
01:09:54He's now got 2 in 2 games
01:09:57He really has found the knack of goal scoring the Irishman
01:10:00It's a lovely ball in from Stewart
01:10:02Who'd made a splendid run
01:10:03And Donaghy there to finish it off
01:10:11Down the line
01:10:12And Barnard his fleet of foot
01:10:14And whips that ball back
01:10:15Laid off by Cascarino
01:10:17It's another for Chelsea
01:10:19And another for the former Rangers man
01:10:21John Spencer
01:10:28Spencer again involved
01:10:29And Barnard
01:10:30The two combining neatly here
01:10:31And he's teasing Fleming
01:10:33The ball over
01:10:34Finding Cascarino doing a good job there
01:10:36And another good run made by Clark
01:10:38And it's gone in!
01:10:40I think it went in off Graham Stewart really
01:10:42He'll take the credit certainly
01:10:44I'm not sure how much he intended of that
01:10:50Andy Townsend
01:10:51Looping that ball across
01:10:52They always look for the head of Cascarino
01:10:54But this time it's coming over for Barnard
01:10:56And Darren Barnard celebrates his first ever goal
01:11:02Free kick then to
01:11:05Ipswich
01:11:06This is John Walke
01:11:09Milton to Dazao
01:11:10They're in here
01:11:11Gwencheth!
01:11:121-0!
01:11:15Superb football
01:11:18Beautiful one-touch approach
01:11:22And Chelsea's defence were left like figurines
01:11:27As Ipswich Town
01:11:29Knocked the ball
01:11:301-2-3
01:11:31And Gwencheth turned up with that blistering finish
01:11:35His eighth goal of the season
01:11:37As Ipswich Town won
01:11:39Chelsea 0
01:11:43Cascarino
01:11:45Oh and a chance here
01:11:46Shot come in!
01:11:471-1!
01:11:50John Spencer
01:11:57His fifth goal of the season
01:12:01And really the only chance that Chelsea have had so far
01:12:10And he took it magnificently
01:12:13Hall getting it forward
01:12:14Cascarino jumping well
01:12:16This is Gareth Hall again
01:12:19One blocked
01:12:21Back to Townsend
01:12:22Oh that's a superb strike by Townsend
01:12:24Crashed it
01:12:25Left footed from 20 yards
01:12:28And it lasted against Baker's crossbar
01:12:32A let off there then for Ipswich
01:12:36And a thunderous shot coming in
01:12:43Southampton move forward once more
01:12:45Johnson's header out by Herlock
01:12:47Here goes Dowie
01:12:48And he'll try one from here as well
01:12:50And Besant can't hold it!
01:12:52And he's punished
01:12:53The goal for Southampton from Nicky Banger
01:12:57Besant's mistake and Banger was there
01:13:03Spencer just never stops working for Chelsea
01:13:06He's done so again
01:13:07Now it's Earl and Johnson
01:13:09Ball knocked in and coming in behind the defender was Graham Stewart
01:13:13Who feel he should have scored
01:13:15Tremendous ball from Johnson
01:13:17And Stewart beat the defence
01:13:19But couldn't direct the header on the target
01:13:22Again Chelsea concentrate their attack down that right hand side
01:13:28Little Dennis Wise scurrying and finding somebody even smaller than him in Spencer
01:13:32Who goes down and Referee Ellery says that's a penalty
01:13:37With no hesitation in pointing to the spot here
01:13:40It didn't seem to be a hefty challenge by any means
01:13:44But Spencer is usually very nimble on his feet
01:13:48He's gone down
01:13:50And so here is Dennis Wise
01:13:52And he blasts it straight into the roof of the Wimbledon net
01:13:55Fast hand Seggers
01:13:571-0 Chelsea
01:13:58Dennis Wise
01:14:03Wise again
01:14:04Tugging away at the jersey apparently of scales there
01:14:08And nicking it back
01:14:09That was a lovely ball here
01:14:11Stewart
01:14:12Here comes Hall!
01:14:13And a rare goal indeed for Gareth Hall
01:14:16Stewart's ball was perfect
01:14:19Laid into the path of the full back
01:14:21Who walloped it home
01:14:27Might be chances he's onside
01:14:28Robbie Earle here must surely set something up for Wimbledon
01:14:31And here comes Holdsworth
01:14:33Had to score
01:14:35Dean Holdsworth
01:14:37Once Earle was away
01:14:38Wimbledon were always certain to be scorers
01:14:44It's Hopkins signing from Morton Scotland
01:14:49Again Wise involved
01:14:50Good ball in from him
01:14:51Laid off by Shipley
01:14:52And yes it's a goal for Spencer
01:14:55Calmly taken
01:14:56And Shipley takes much of the credit here
01:14:58Resting the ball down
01:15:00And then John Spencer
01:15:02Cool as you like
01:15:03Just tucked it inside the upright
01:15:09Another good break from Chelsea
01:15:11Wimbledon struggling at the back at the moment
01:15:13Here comes Shipley
01:15:14He's inside the area
01:15:16And Neil Shipley
01:15:18Marks his full debut with a goal
01:15:21And his dad who used to play for Charlton and Gillingham
01:15:24Would be delighted for his boy
01:15:27Ball for Chelsea
01:15:32Holdsworth has ridden that challenge well
01:15:34And finding Dean Blackwell now
01:15:36Who's come on as substitutes
01:15:37And might lay on another for Wimbledon
01:15:39And it's two for them now
01:15:41Laurie Sanchez the scorer
01:15:454-2 the score
01:15:48Dixon Sharp have certainly swapped for the time being
01:15:55A defensive side of Gareth Hall's game
01:15:57But it breaks for Hughes
01:15:59Oh and it's gone past Besson
01:16:02And Manchester United
01:16:05Have forged their way in front here
01:16:09Through Mark Hughes
01:16:14Many of these supporters
01:16:16Here at the ground
01:16:17A good
01:16:18Four or five hours before kick-off
01:16:20Just wanting to be part of these proceedings
01:16:22As they believe Manchester United are moving inexorably towards
01:16:27Ending
01:16:28This famine in terms of the league title
01:16:30Oh Clark an own goal
01:16:33He tried to get it outside the post
01:16:36And he put it into the corner of his own net
01:16:39And it is
01:16:402-0
01:16:42Sharp quickly on the scene
01:16:45Just too high for Hughes
01:16:47It was
01:16:48A ball played into a reasonable area by Lee Sharp
01:16:51Who certainly
01:16:52Since they made that switch quite early in the piece
01:16:55Has been quite prominent on the right hand side
01:16:58For Manchester United
01:16:59Hughes
01:17:00Giggs is in here
01:17:01Over Besson
01:17:02Cantona
01:17:043-0
01:17:14There's plenty of pace about this Chelsea side
01:17:16And on goes Townsend now
01:17:17And Spencer's trying to get ahead of him
01:17:19He's inside that Coventry area
01:17:21Round the keeper
01:17:22And it's gone in
01:17:23It trickled over the line
01:17:25Off the boot of the fullback Fleming
01:17:27But it's John Spencer's goal
01:17:30And a lot of credit to Andy Townsend as well
01:17:33Not only for the run
01:17:34But for the release of the ball as well
01:17:36Just look at this
01:17:37Perfect timing
01:17:38Perfect weight on the pass
01:17:40And once Spencer got onto it
01:17:42He knew where he was going
01:17:43He's around Jonathan Gould
01:17:44And Fleming's just a little unlucky
01:17:46It came off the inside of his leg
01:17:51Bill Babb
01:17:52With this free kick for Coventry
01:17:54They'll look for the head of
01:17:55Big John Williams up there no doubt
01:17:59Long and high
01:18:00And Kareem coming from it
01:18:01Makes a very good punch indeed
01:18:03Here is McQuinn still however
01:18:05Oh that's a classic strike from McQuinn
01:18:11Wise again
01:18:12Babb presents a huge obstacle in front of him
01:18:15Wise will curl one across here
01:18:17And the ball knocked down by Barnard
01:18:19For Cascarino to score
01:18:22Tony Cascarino
01:18:23Regaining the lead for Chelsea here
01:18:26Excellent work from Wise
01:18:28And from Barnard
01:18:29And the tall Irish international
01:18:32In the right place at the right time
01:18:35And so to the very last game of the season
01:18:38The lads arrive at Bramall Lane
01:18:40Home of a Sheffield United side
01:18:41That's just steered clear of relegation
01:18:44The decision on whether or not
01:18:45David Webb would be offered the manager's job
01:18:47For next season was imminent
01:18:49But first three last points are at stake
01:18:53So will Sheffield United be rewarded
01:18:55For their early pressure from this corner
01:18:58Whitehouse will take it
01:18:59And he'll swing it in towards that near post
01:19:01Beazley coming for it
01:19:02And a goal
01:19:03Forced over the line
01:19:04By Andy Scott
01:19:06In the 7th minute of his game
01:19:08And a goal
01:19:09And a goal
01:19:10And a goal
01:19:11And a goal
01:19:12And a goal
01:19:13And a goal
01:19:14And a goal
01:19:15And a goal
01:19:16And a goal
01:19:17And a goal
01:19:18And a goal
01:19:19And a goal
01:19:20And a goal
01:19:21In the 7th minute of his debut
01:19:22The former Sutton United man has scored
01:19:27Whitehouse again
01:19:28Swinging that ball across
01:19:29And it's gone all the way through
01:19:30For Rodgers
01:19:312-0 Sheffield United
01:19:33And two goals
01:19:34By former Sutton players
01:19:40Here goes Dean again
01:19:42Galloping down that right
01:19:43Always trouble
01:19:44Long ball in
01:19:45Finding Whitehouse again
01:19:46The first time
01:19:47Shot!
01:19:48Brilliant goal
01:19:49For Sheffield United
01:19:51And for Dean Whitehouse
01:19:53And they're going to bury him in the turf
01:19:58Away goes Bradshaw again
01:20:00And Chelsea so stretched now
01:20:02And that's another one
01:20:04Whitehouse again
01:20:05Three minutes into the second half
01:20:07Sheffield United 4
01:20:09Chelsea 0
01:20:10And the Russian goalkeeper
01:20:11Says what's going on
01:20:17Four minutes left
01:20:18And Chelsea's fans still urging the team on
01:20:20Here comes Lee
01:20:21And Kelly's made the mistake
01:20:23Which gives Chelsea the goal
01:20:25And the goalkeeper
01:20:26Even with only four minutes of the season left
01:20:28Curses his luck
01:20:32Ball over the top
01:20:33Finds Andy Townsend
01:20:34Who's surely offside
01:20:35Now there's no flag
01:20:36And he scores
01:20:374-2
01:20:38And that must surely be the last goal of the season
01:20:40Scored by Andy Townsend
01:20:42Now Eddie Newton, Frank Sinclair, Graham Stewart
01:20:45These sort of kids there
01:20:46They are now established players
01:20:48And now all of a sudden
01:20:50People are going to be looking to them
01:20:52To be, you know
01:20:54A major part of Chelsea's team for the future
01:20:56Which is good
01:20:57Really only I was asked to do one thing in real terms
01:20:59That was to keep them in the Premier Division
01:21:01And looking back now
01:21:04We've done that I suppose fairly comfortably
01:21:07If you look back on it
01:21:08It wasn't very comfortable as we were trying to achieve it
01:21:10But we've done it quite comfortably
01:21:12So that was the objective
01:21:15In the last few games
01:21:16What I've tried to do
01:21:17Is not knowing whether I'll be here next year or not
01:21:20What I've tried to do
01:21:21Is establish some ideas on people again
01:21:24Like I did with the Blackburn game
01:21:25Is to throw a few odd people in here and there
01:21:28And some in different positions
01:21:30To see what strength of the squad I would have
01:21:32So give me some sort of idea for the summer
01:21:34Otherwise you start off at the beginning of next season
01:21:36With not too great an idea
01:21:39And you start from scratch again
01:21:41Really you should be able to start
01:21:42Maybe at least a third of the way up the ladder
01:21:49In our last competition
01:21:50We asked you to identify the Chelsea player
01:21:52Sporting a tattoo
01:21:54Former Fulham resident Scott Rodley
01:21:56Now of Leeds
01:21:57Wins an autographed football
01:21:58For guessing correctly
01:21:59That the player was Gareth Hall
01:22:06Now we offer a prize of a VIP day
01:22:08For two at Chelsea's first home game next season
01:22:10In our goal of the season competition
01:22:15Vinnie Jones
01:22:16Trying the longer approach this time
01:22:18Though Marshall should have this one under control
01:22:20Or Eitwish just nicked away from him
01:22:22Might just give a chance to McHalford
01:22:24Glorious strike
01:22:25And the former England man has opened his account for Chelsea
01:22:29The goal was a pleasurable thing to get
01:22:31And it's nice to score any time
01:22:32But to score in your debut was great
01:22:35I think it was Vinnie
01:22:36Played a long ball forward
01:22:37I think that Marshall got mixed up a little bit
01:22:40And it fell nicely for me
01:22:41I thought about chipping it
01:22:43But I changed my mind
01:22:45Thankfully
01:22:46And I just blasted it
01:22:47And it flew in the back of the net
01:22:50Lobbed back in by Warhurst
01:22:53It's about as far as Graham Stewart
01:22:55He's got plenty of room here
01:22:56And sets off on a counter
01:22:57Over the halfway line
01:22:58And the Wednesday defender
01:23:00Sort of melting away from him
01:23:01And Stewart has gone a long way here
01:23:03Oh brilliant run by Stewart
01:23:05And that's a fabulous goal
01:23:07And Graham Stewart has a right to celebrate
01:23:10That's one of the best goals you'll see all season
01:23:12It was fairly deep in my own half
01:23:14And you know I just ran and ran
01:23:16And I think it was only till
01:23:17When I got into the last 25 yards
01:23:19That I had to really do some hard work
01:23:21But you know it came about
01:23:24And I was really pleased to have scored a goal
01:23:26Almost having a boundary there
01:23:27Townsend brings it away for Chelsea
01:23:30Confronted by McGoldrick
01:23:32Getting it on to the left foot
01:23:34It's the Super Bowl
01:23:361-1 Andy Townsend
01:23:40They were coming towards me
01:23:41And they just sort of managed to
01:23:44Get it on to my left foot
01:23:45And I whacked it well
01:23:46And Nigel Martin got a hand to it
01:23:47But it ended up in the back of the net
01:23:48But you know I think it was quite a good goal
01:23:51But it was more a goal
01:23:53Because of the conditions I think really
01:23:55So is the goal of the season
01:23:57A. Meg Halfords against Oldham Athletic
01:23:59B. Graham Stewart's goal at Sheffield Wednesday
01:24:02Or could it be goal C by Andy Townsend
01:24:04Against Crystal Palace

01:24:24The Chairman's vision of Chelsea 2000 continues
01:24:27And now you have a chance to help run
01:24:29Chelsea Pitch Owners
01:24:30A company which will ensure the ground remains
01:24:32A football only venue
01:24:34£100 buys you a share of the action
01:24:37One trophy did come to the bridge this season
01:24:39From across the channel
01:24:41In a two-legged affair
01:24:42Chelsea first beat Le Havre 3-1 at home
01:24:44And then drew 1-1 in France
01:24:47Travelling Chelsea fans were praised for their behaviour
01:24:51Earlier this season we saw Chelsea ladies in action
01:24:53As they beat Pinewood in a league cup game
01:24:56But despite losing team captain Val Cox
01:24:59To a serious injury
01:25:00The team went on to the Anniversary Cup Final
01:25:03And they won it as well
01:25:042-1 in the final against Millwall
01:25:08The Chelsea youth team had a mixed year
01:25:10The lads finished in the middle of Division 1
01:25:12Of the South East Counties League
01:25:14Neil Shipley scored over 30 goals for the side
01:25:16Before his promotion to the senior squad
01:25:19After a shaky start to their season
01:25:21Peter Nicklaus was satisfied with their stronger finish
01:25:26Eddie Niedzweski could never be sure how injuries
01:25:28And the demands of the first team
01:25:30Would affect his selection
01:25:31In the Neville Ovenden combination
01:25:33Yet he managed to maintain a determined approach
01:25:36And Chelsea's reserve team had a splendid season
01:25:39Culminating in a thrilling climax
01:25:41Which saw them lose their last game at West Ham
01:25:44When Millwall won on the same day
01:25:46To take the title
01:25:48So the club has a stronger foundation
01:25:50Than 12 months ago
01:25:51But will the new young Chelsea stars
01:25:54Be ready to win honours
01:25:55At a senior level next season
01:25:58It's very difficult
01:26:00A cup final obviously would be great
01:26:03But we've got a lot of good players
01:26:06There's a lot of hope at Chelsea
01:26:08I don't think we're a hopeless case
01:26:11Far from that
01:26:12We've got a lot of good players
01:26:14And again, there's no doubt
01:26:16There will be comings and goings
01:26:17And players arriving in the summer
01:26:22It's important
01:26:23If we get some good players in
01:26:24Then who knows
01:26:25I'll be very, very disappointed
01:26:27If this time next year
01:26:28We're not knocking on the door
01:26:29Something or other
01:26:30Whether it's a cup competition
01:26:31Or in Europe
01:26:32Or particularly the Premier League
01:26:34There's no reason in starting a job
01:26:36If you think
01:26:37I'm going to be happy or contented
01:26:38To finish half way up
01:26:41An old manager pal of mine
01:26:43Alex Stock used to say
01:26:44If you start a season
01:26:45And you don't think
01:26:46You're going to win both cup competitions
01:26:48And win every league match
01:26:49Then it ain't worth
01:26:50Starting a campaign
01:26:51And in truth
01:26:52It is the right policy to follow
01:26:55What you try and do
01:26:56Is if the first time it hiccups
01:26:58You try and put it right
01:26:59The next thing
01:27:00You don't get despondent
01:27:01About the past
01:27:02You just get on with the future
01:27:03And I genuinely feel
01:27:04That Chelsea has
01:27:06An unbelievable capability
01:27:08To do better
01:27:10And I'm sure
01:27:11Whether I'm here or not
01:27:12I'm sure it will
01:27:14A hint there
01:27:15Of what was to follow
01:27:16Three days later
01:27:17When Chelsea announced
01:27:18That David Webb's
01:27:19Brief managerial career
01:27:20At the Bridge
01:27:21Was over
01:27:23The team finished the season
01:27:24In 11th place
01:27:25In the new Premier League
01:27:27The lads will take to the road
01:27:28Next season
01:27:29With a new man
01:27:30At the helm
01:27:31The kick off
01:27:32Is August the 14th
01:27:48August the 14th
