00:37in this week's show we will be reflecting on Brighton's dramatic defeat at Chelsea
00:42before we look ahead to Sunday's match against Tottenham Hotspur.
00:45First, here are the top stories from across East Sussex.
00:49A Bexhill Care Home is closing down. Grosvenor Park Care Home in Brookfield Road, Bexhill
00:54will shut once all residents there have been supported to find a suitable new care placement.
00:59The home's owners, HC1 Limited, said there had been a lack of demand for the services
01:04on offer. Their care home has 57 beds and offers residential and nursing care.
01:09A spokesperson for HC1 said, this decision has not been taken lightly and we recognise
01:14the impact this will have on families, residents and colleagues at the home.
01:19We are working closely with East Sussex County Council and are supporting residents, their
01:23loved ones and colleagues through this process to ensure it is as smooth as possible for
01:27everyone involved. The home will close once each resident has been supported to find
01:31a suitable new care placement.
01:34The new owners of an iconic hotel in East Sussex have applied to make changes to the
01:39Grade 2 listed building.
01:41Powder Mills Prop Co UK Ltd applied to Rother District Council to make internal and external
01:47changes and alterations to Powder Mills Hotel in Powder Mill Lane, Battle. The application
01:52also wants to make changes to the adjoining pavilion. These changes include repositioning
01:57the hotel's reception, improving guest facilities, improving accessibility for people with mobility
02:02impairments, improving the back of house facilities and increasing the bedroom space inside.
02:09The Brighton & Hove Wood Recycling Project, also known as The Wood Store, will close down
02:13by the end of the year, the Board of Trustees have announced with great sadness and regret.
02:18Over the past 26 years, employees supported by local customers and dedicated volunteers
02:23have saved thousands of tonnes of wood from landfill or incineration and helped train
02:27hundreds of disadvantaged people, improving their employment and life outcomes.
02:32A spokesperson for the charity said, in recent years, like many other businesses in the area,
02:37the economic climate has not been kind to us. Covid, the cost of living crisis and ongoing
02:42low customer confidence have all taken their toll.
02:45Finally, Brilliant Brighton's festive afternoon, taking place on Saturday 16th November, is
02:50set to spread some Christmas cheer across the city centre and signal the start of the
02:55festive season. Choirs will be popping up across Brilliant Brighton, while festive helpers
03:00will be visiting businesses and handing out goodies, adding to the seasonal magic. The
03:04event also brings back the popular window dressing competition, which has seen hundreds
03:08of votes cast by the public for their favourite festive windows. Vote for your favourite display
03:14and you could win a £75 Brighton gift card to spend locally in a prize draw.
03:20Adding to the atmosphere will be Brilliant Brighton's Christmas lights, funded by the
03:23517 businesses within the bid. These twinkling lights, which will illuminate the city's streets
03:28from late afternoon, help create a magical backdrop for the event.
03:32Hello, I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World. I'm joined here by Henry Bryant, who
03:36is about to watch Brighton take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. So Henry, how do you see
03:40this one going? I think it's going to be a really difficult
03:42one for Brighton and Hove Albion. Not with João Pedro, that's going to be a big, difficult
03:47situation for Brighton. They need to get goals. Danny Welbeck though, he's scored against
03:52Chelsea for the past three consecutive seasons, so if he's on the starting line-up today,
03:57which he should be, then that's a really big threat for Chelsea to thwart. But they've
04:01been in really good form recently. I think that Enzo Maresco is doing a good job at Chelsea
04:06and we'll just have to see what happens. But I'm predicting a 2-2 draw.
04:11And who would you say are the main danger men for Chelsea? Obviously Nicholas Jackson
04:15has been in good form of late. Is he one you'll find him conscious about? Who else do you
04:18think Brian needs to keep an eye on in the Chelsea team?
04:20Absolutely. I think that Nicholas Jackson is a real threat and we all know what he's
04:24capable of. I think this season, these first few games, he's been proving himself more
04:29and more and he's becoming a real fan's favourite for the fans at Stamford Bridge. But I also
04:35do think that Cole Palmer, the coldest Palmer, is doing really well as well. We know how
04:40influential he can be in a game and the previous fixture we had against Chelsea, he did score
04:46a really nice header. So we'll have to watch out for him, we'll have to get our marking
04:50right and we'll have to make sure that we're on top form all of the game to make sure that
04:54they don't slip through the cracks and get the attacks in.
04:57Obviously it's become a bit of a rivalry of late. Chelsea and Brighton with the transfers
05:02and obviously the managers that have come and gone. What would you say about that? Do
05:07you think there's still going to be a bit of fire in this match today?
05:09There's always a bit of fire with the fact that Brighton have profited a lot from the
05:15players and manager that they have sold to Chelsea in effect. I think Chelsea fans as
05:21well, there's a little bit of tension between them and the Albion fans because essentially
05:27I think Brighton fans think that they've been able to use money to gain a lot of these players
05:32and the fact that Brighton are still able to come up trumps in a lot of occasions.
05:38First and foremost, introduce yourselves and how long have you been supporting Brighton
05:42at Albion?
05:43I'm Pendrick Brighton and I've been supporting, probably for about three years.
05:48I was on Will with our season ticket since 2017-18 and I've been kind of guided to games
05:56ever since we were little really.
05:58Fantastic. And what do you guys make of this new rivalry between Chelsea and Brighton?
06:03Obviously the managers go into Chelsea, lots of players as well. What do you make of it?
06:07I think it's obviously a bit of a modern rivalry given that it's only really from them having
06:14all the money and signing all our players. To be honest, I find it pretty funny because
06:19all the Chelsea fans there, at least the ones I know, they're always so negative about it
06:24and all the players they've signed for them, they're always negative about how they turn
06:29It's funny, at least for us, given that we've been able to sign and spend £200m this summer
06:35giving all the money they're giving to us.
06:40What do you make of the start of the season so far and Hersella's start as a Brighton manager?
06:44It's pretty decent. Longest undefeated run since 2016.
06:49When you talk about the rivalry and you look up here and look at the amount they've won,
06:55look at the amount we've won. We come here with every expectation that we can get a result.
06:59It shows how far we've come as a team and that the rivalry is something which actually
07:04we have a proper expectation to be able to give these guys everything they want in a good game.
07:10Sam Orton and Henry Bryant outside Stamford Bridge where we've just seen Brighton lose
07:144-2 in what was a surreal match really. That first half was a match that we've not seen before,
07:2045 minutes that we've not experienced. It was 6 goals and it could have been 10 in that first half.
07:26Brighton were obviously a bit naive playing that high line, were made to play ruthlessly by Chelsea
07:31who really could have had more goals. Cole Palmer with 4 first half goals which just shows
07:37how much of a quality player he is. So Henry, how do you even start to sum that one up?
07:43Well, I think that the way Brighton came into the game, as Maresco said in the post-match
07:49press conference, surprised Chelsea and the way that they came into it and changed things
07:54around early on really made them suffer and that's when we got that first goal.
07:58The first goal on the score sheet for Ritter who's been doing some quite good things for Brighton.
08:04We just haven't been able to see the end product and he got that today which was one positive
08:09for Brighton fans but Cole Palmer, I should say, he was absolutely quality.
08:164 goals passed us and I think in terms of the way Brighton were able to defend things,
08:23they just weren't and it wasn't a good one at the end of the day for Brighton.
08:28A real lesson to be learnt there and I think that that high line was a struggle at times.
08:33Maresco likes to play that high line but it was difficult to do against Chelsea.
08:36They've got so much impact in threat.
08:38Yeah, well exactly that and obviously the second half was very quiet in comparison.
08:42The players were probably exhausted after the energy they burned in that first half.
08:46Were there signs of encouragement there for Brighton to maybe steady the ship a little bit
08:51and stop that tide of pressure that they were facing from Chelsea?
08:55Because as I mentioned, they could have conceded so many goals in that first half.
08:59I think that as we spoke about at half-time, I think they were just exhausted.
09:04It was a really topsy-turvy first half and in my opinion, the most dramatic first half
09:11that I've ever experienced as a fan of football and as a journalist.
09:15It was crazy, absolutely mental and I think that Brighton did well to thwart that attack.
09:20It could have been worse.
09:22There were opportunities for Cole Palmer in that second half where he could have got that 5-2.
09:28There was a miss where you did think, how has he missed that?
09:31But he was perfecting that game all thereabouts.
09:35I think that Brighton did have a little chance to get back into the game really,
09:39make it 4-3 at times.
09:40I think that we did put a little bit of pace back on there with Jakuba Minter,
09:45which was a really positive sign.
09:47We also got Evan Ferguson back for a little bit as well.
09:50So there were signs that Herzegovina was looking to attack and maybe see if we can nick a goal
09:56and make it an awkward one and push for that draw.
09:59But it just wasn't meant to be.
10:01And as Herzegovina said, there were too many individual mistakes on the day
10:06and it's things we have to learn from.
10:08We should learn out of it and I think we can't win when you do these easy mistakes,
10:16especially in the first half.
10:18That's why we have to analyse it, we have to improve and if it's necessary we have to adapt some things.
10:24You always need a connection on the pitch and I think we did a lot of changes today
10:30and there was not the connection we needed to play like this.

10:46Welcome back to the Goalmouth Action podcast where we will now discuss all things Brighton
10:50and Hove Abbey with Henry Bright and Sam Morton giving us the lowdown.
10:53Starting with you Sam, crazy old game at Stamford Bridge, crazy scoreline as well.
10:58But did that tell the full story?
11:00It didn't, it didn't.
11:02Six goals and they all came in the first half and to be honest,
11:05there could have been another six in the first half, let alone the second.
11:09It was a game I've never seen the likes of, to be honest.
11:13It was absolutely crazy.
11:15Brighton actually took the lead with Eugenio Rutter getting his first goal for the club.
11:19So a really, really good start for Brighton in a way at Stamford Bridge.
11:22But Chelsea responded really quickly.
11:25Cole Palmer hit the post and they had a goal harshly ruled out for offside.
11:30Well, two goals ruled out for offside, one was harsh, one was obvious.
11:33And Cole Palmer scored four goals in that first half.
11:38Some terrible defending, some big mistakes.
11:41None more so than Adam Webster gifting the ball to Nicholas Jackson that led to a goal.
11:47Fabrega was caught playing out from the back for Cole Palmer's fourth.
11:52Obviously gifted a penalty for one of them.
11:54It was a bit of a disaster, in all honesty.
11:57They obviously really missed Van Hecker, who was injured.
12:01We'll talk about that a bit later as well.
12:03But Adam Webster and Lewis Dunk playing a high line isn't necessarily the best way to go
12:08if you're playing away at Stamford Bridge.
12:10They were taught that the hard way.
12:12But as I say, they lost 4-2, but it could have been a lot worse.
12:17It really could.
12:18The chances that Chelsea missed.
12:19Jackson could have had a hat-trick on another day.
12:21Sancho was unlucky not to get on the score sheet.
12:24It really was a bit of a drumming on all counts, really.
12:30But Brighton did look a threat going forward.
12:32They obviously got a second goal through Carlos Baleba,
12:36which initially did bring them back into the game because they were 3-1 down.
12:40They got a goal back to make it 3-2.
12:43You felt like they could have equalised because Chelsea were still a bit suspect defensively.
12:48But Brighton really, they've got a lot of improvements to do in that area of the pitch,
12:52in defence, and to make sure that they learn from this, really.
12:56And they don't let that happen again because it really was a harsh lesson.
13:01It was indeed.
13:02Henry, how much of a concern was the defensive performance?
13:05I ended up catching the highlights of Match of the Day
13:07and it looked like Brighton were suicidal at the back sometimes.
13:10Is the highline in need of a rethink?
13:13I think so in some games.
13:15I think that highline was just such a massive talking point amongst fans and pundits after the game.
13:22We have to mention as well,
13:23it was a slightly different squad to what we'd seen in the opening games.
13:26Cadioglu coming in for his first Premier League start there.
13:30No Veltman in the squad.
13:32No Jean-Paul van Geck that we mentioned.
13:35Adam Webster coming in there.
13:36So this new highline tactic coming along with players
13:39that aren't as familiar with playing together as the season's just started
13:43and getting used to this new manager I think did add to the poor defensive performance.
13:49And against a team like Chelsea,
13:51it's going to be really difficult because they're just finding their form now
13:55with all of these players.
13:56And it looks like they've got a really, really dangerous attack.
14:00And we saw that with those four goals from Cole Palmer in the first half.
14:04As we mentioned, Boliva got caught out.
14:07Verbruggen got caught out.
14:09Webster got caught out.
14:10But I think overall, with the fact that it's a very new tactic that we're playing here,
14:15I think that it just puts everyone under the cosh,
14:18especially playing teams like Chelsea.
14:20And we just didn't get it right.
14:21I think Herzele just didn't get it right.
14:24And there was a lot of things said after the press conference was sort of done.
14:31And Herzele said he should discuss the highline before he goes out into the public
14:35and say something about the style of play.
14:38But he did mention, as he was correct in saying,
14:41there were too many individual mistakes.
14:43I think with playing that highline,
14:46you do need a certain calibre of defender that's got a bit more pace to them.
14:50You need a bit more reassurance at the back.
14:52And I think that it was a rude awakening for Herzele into sort of how games can go
14:58so quickly in the Premier League.
15:00I think that it's going to be a real tricky one.
15:03I'm interested to see how we sort of do that and are able to sort of thwart that pressure
15:09if we play the same highline against Spurs.
15:12Yes, absolutely.
15:14We're speaking of the Spurs game.
15:16What is the latest injury news, Sam?
15:18I'm hearing that one key defender could be out for a while,
15:21which is a bit of a concern.
15:23Yes, so we're hearing that Jan-Paul Van Hecker could be out for six weeks
15:28following a groin injury.
15:30He revealed that he had a significant tear to the groin after that game at Chelsea.
15:35He said he'd been playing through the problem for a while,
15:38but he had more of an issue in the closing stages of the game against Nottingham Forest.
15:43He said, obviously, he's been playing a few matches with it,
15:46but it's got to the point now where he needs to get it looked at.
15:49It seems like potentially he's made it worse in playing these games,
15:52obviously with an injury, which is obviously not great.
15:56So we need to see how the rehab goes, but it could be around six weeks
16:00before we see him again.
16:02It's obviously a major blow for himself and the club.
16:05He's been one of Brighton's most consistent performers at centre-back
16:08over the last year or so.
16:11Obviously, with Dunk being in and out of form,
16:14obviously he's still brilliant, Lewis Dunk, on his day,
16:16but I feel like definitely he's been in and out of form.
16:18And having Van Hecker next to him is when you see Lewis Dunk at his best,
16:21and he really does bring the best out of the captain as well.
16:24I think when Dunk's alongside Webster, you kind of don't see the best from him
16:27as we saw against Chelsea.
16:29I think both of them weren't very good in that game.
16:33Obviously, their Brazilian defender Igor has had some injury problems,
16:37hasn't really had consistency in the team,
16:39but I think now's a good chance for him to really establish his place
16:42and to show what he can do.
16:43And it's so important, really, because Brighton have got some big games
16:46coming up – Spurs, Newcastle, Wolves.
16:49They've played Liverpool twice in League and Cup,
16:51and they've got Man City and an away trip to Bournemouth
16:55before the international break.
16:57So lots of games that Van Hecker's going to potentially miss here,
17:00which is a huge blow.
17:02So we'll have to see what happens.
17:04Hopefully, he can maybe come back a little bit sooner than anticipated.
17:07Brighton have a bit of a lengthy injury list at the moment,
17:09with Joel Veltman still missing.
17:11Matt O'Reilly, obviously, not sure when he'll be back.
17:13Jael Pedro could be out for a prolonged period of time,
17:15which is another huge blow.
17:17James Milner, not too sure when he's returning.
17:21And Idingra also missed that game at Stamford Bridge,
17:24so hopefully he won't be out too long, because he's been really good this season.
17:28We could potentially see Soddy March return in the not-too-distant future,
17:32obviously after a serious injury.
17:34And Brian Gruder as well.
17:35He's in line for a potential appearance against Spurs.
17:38We've not seen him yet, since his £25m move from Mainz in Germany.
17:42So, yeah, excited to see him, because it's been a long time coming.
17:46I think as his injury problems start to mount up,
17:48you really see the importance of the squad depth that Brighton have managed to get
17:52in the transfer window.
17:54And hopefully it really comes into fruition.
17:56But a little bit of a concern defensively.
17:58That's one area that does concern me now,
18:01with Jan van Gekker out for a long period of time.
18:04Absolutely.
18:05And Henry, what can we expect from the match?
18:07I think myself and Mark have both said that we're predicting a five-all draw
18:11with the way that both sides are playing at the moment.
18:14Yeah, I think Brighton won't be able to get back into winning ways,
18:19but I certainly think they'll be able to give a good game to Tottenham.
18:22I think they'll have to sort of compose and regroup after that defeat to Chelsea,
18:27because it was sort of curtains after that first half,
18:30both teams expelling so much energy.
18:32And then that second half was a little bit flat in comparison
18:36to the topsy-turvy first half.
18:38But Brighton, at the time of recording,
18:40currently sitting in ninth position with nine points,
18:43and Tottenham are in eighth position with 10.
18:45So similar sort of positions there.
18:49Funnily enough, Brighton won this exact fixture 4-2 last season.
18:54I wouldn't mind that happening again.
18:56But Spurs have won their last two Premier League games,
18:59beaten Man Utd 3-0, Brentford 3-1.
19:02And Brighton's last two home games have been draws to Ipswich
19:06and against Nottingham Forest.
19:08And as Sam mentioned, I mean, we've got no van Geck
19:11for around six weeks, so we really do need to adjust.
19:14And to sort of praise van Geck and what he's been doing for Brighton,
19:18he has arguably been one of our best defenders in the last few years.
19:23Just the way that he's been able to come up from a young age,
19:27and he still is a young man,
19:29and have been able to grow and develop with the squad.
19:31He's been really pivotal, and he's turned into a defender
19:35that was probably learning from Lewis Dunk,
19:37and maybe Lewis Dunk could learn a few things from him right now
19:40in the form that he's in at the moment.
19:43But yeah, the 24-year-old van Geck said that he'd been playing
19:47through the problem that he had for a while,
19:49but it became more of an issue during the end of the two-all draw
19:53with Nottingham Forest.
19:54And it's just a case of trying to get him back now.
19:56Dhingra could be back in the squad,
19:58and he's been in fine form lately.
20:00So that's more of an attacking threat for us.
20:02Veltman could be back as well, because it was illness
20:04that took him away from that Chelsea game.
20:07And as Sam was mentioning as well,
20:09Gruda could be another attacking option.
20:12So yeah, lots to think about.
20:14And it's just the way that Herzele bounces back, really,
20:17and gets his players ready.
20:18Because Tottenham, we know, can score goals.
20:21Maybe they should have scored more goals as well
20:23against Manchester United when they played
20:25and won 3-0 there.
20:27But yeah, it'll be a really tricky match.
20:29I don't see Brighton winning this one,
20:31but I do think that if we can give a good account
20:33of ourselves defensively as well in other positions,
20:37but most importantly defensively and making sure
20:39that that high line isn't as leaky as it was last time out,
20:42then that'll be making a good account of what we can do.
20:45Absolutely. And before we wrap up,
20:47how would you both sum up Herzele's start to life at Brighton?
20:50Sam, he's without a Premier League win since August
20:53with three draws and a defeat in September.
20:55Is that early promise faded a little bit?
20:58Yeah, it's difficult, isn't it?
21:00Because he obviously got that Manager of the Month award.
21:02And I think, as you've rightly predicted,
21:04that could have put a curse on him.
21:05And that seems to have happened.
21:08Yeah, really good start with those wins
21:10against Everton and Man Utd.
21:12And obviously they haven't won since that game
21:14against United, obviously with the three draws
21:16against Arsenal, Ipswich, Nottingham Forest
21:19and then losing against Chelsea.
21:21And there's obviously absolutely no shame at all
21:23in drawing against Arsenal.
21:25It was a really good result.
21:26But they really need to pick up some points
21:28in those home games against Ipswich and Forest.
21:30And that's the only two games you kind of look back on
21:34as the two missed opportunities, really.
21:38Because I think the form Chelsea were in,
21:39losing there wasn't necessarily a disgrace at all.
21:42The manner of it was a bit farcical.
21:44But I feel like there's still plenty of room for improvement.
21:46And I just really hope that Hazela learns
21:48from where he's gone wrong.
21:50I think there's been some really good signs,
21:52but obviously some worrying ones as well.
21:54And just hopefully he learns from that.
21:56I think, obviously, as we saw with Di Servi,
21:58it just felt like he was just stuck to his plan A
22:00all the time.
22:01And you didn't really see any tweaks in him,
22:02even in games that you felt like he needed
22:04to be a bit more pragmatic.
22:06So I think maybe Hazela will learn from that.
22:08He's obviously still a very young coach
22:10and still obviously got a lot to learn
22:12in the Premier League.
22:13And I think Martin Keown, to perhaps harshly say,
22:16he was wet behind the ears in commentary the other day.
22:19You can see the argument.
22:21He's obviously a very young manager,
22:22still learning his trade.
22:24Things aren't always going to go right for him.
