00:00I'm Patrick Thompson, I'm the Chief Executive here at Abbeyfield and Wellesley Housing Association.
00:07So Patrick, why do you feel it's so important to take part in this positive ageing month
00:12in October?
00:13Well I think for us, in terms of the housing that we provide to older people, it just exemplifies
00:18what we do every month of the year, it's not just an October thing for us, it's about getting
00:22older people involved in the community, getting the community involved with the work that
00:25we do and giving people just a bit of a value in life in their later years.
00:30And what sort of events and activities have been planned for the month then?
00:34We have a whole range of things across all our sites, we have cookery demonstrations
00:38for people who are on their own, so it's single people cooking on a budget, we're doing that.
00:43We have events across some of the houses doing lunches, tea parties, we have armchair aerobics
00:53we have coming up in County Down, we've got plenty of things and a whole range of different
00:58types of activities, it's not just about one thing for everyone, it's doing different things
01:02in different houses with all our happy residents.
01:14So Jane, what advice would you give to a younger person that you've learnt over the years?
01:20Try and live life as a kid but not getting hold on drugs or that sort of thing, or smoking
01:26or a drink, so they can manage to stay away from that.
01:31That's definitely good advice, definitely good advice.
01:34And what activities have you been doing here for this month?
01:38This month?
01:39Oh I don't know, probably that.
01:42The darts?
01:43And probably board games.
01:46Very good.
01:47Do you enjoy the board games?
01:49You enjoy the board games?
01:50Oh yes.
01:59What piece of advice would you give to a younger person, something you've learnt from your
02:03life experience?
02:04I think they should see you for old age, see you for old age, and meet plenty of friends
02:13if you can.
02:16It's very important to have friends.
02:32You take day by day, and if you have to work, get out and work and get yourself a good job.
02:38Very good, very good.
02:39And I'm told that you have a Robbie Burns poem?
02:43Huh?
02:44A Robbie Burns poem you can recite?
02:46Oh, a poem!
02:49Go on, go on.
02:50Did you tell her that?
02:51You have to tell her.
02:52Every time I talk to her she'll say, tell them the Robbie Burns poem.
02:57Well I taught my young, my young day brother, when he was only four years old, and he was
03:05starting school when my mother had died.
03:08And I used to teach him it every day, you know, before he went to school.
03:13And he had to do a Robbie Burns poem, and it was,
03:17What will a day give a hoagie day, my pride and my joy, my hoagie.
03:22My only best, I had no me, and wow, but I was hoagie.
03:27The wee lass next, we watched the maist, me and my faithful doggie,
03:32to a lunk a dyke, like tower the dyke, and maist had killed my hoagie.
03:38Very good.
03:39And I used to say the same line about six times, and now we get to the same line.
