00:00We are taking you all the way back to the ripe year of 2012 and it's time for a new Japan
00:18zone, Wrestle Kingdom 6.
00:19The IWGP Heavyweight title on the line.
00:20That man right there stands as the challenger and we sit in the broadcast booth.
00:21Chris Charlton and I'm Walker Stewart and this is Wrestle Kingdom 6.
00:22You get the chills of Minoru Suzuki coming up the lift here, the challenger and the chills
00:38of us being on the cusp of history and we'll see whether Minoru Suzuki can put a stop to
00:51the streak of Hiroshi Tanahashi with the IWGP Heavyweight Championship this main event.
01:21And how appropriate it would be that if it is Minoru Suzuki after Tanahashi beat Nagata's
01:40record by beating Nagata, if it's Minoru Suzuki to end the ace here tonight, we can all...
01:49If Suzuki can beat the champion, it would be another blow to Blue Justice as well.
02:1956 champion Walker, his fifth reign and day number 365, one year ago to this day, he defeated
02:38Satoshi Kojima in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 5 to lift that championship.
02:45And since then, they've all come up and they've all fallen to the ace.
02:53Kojima again, a new beginning.
02:57Yuji Nagata, a new dimension.
03:00Shinsuke Nakamura and Don Taku.
03:02Charlie Haas in the US.
03:05Hiroki Goto.
03:06Giant Bernard.
03:07Shinsuke Nakamura.
03:08Tetsuya Naito.
03:09Toru Yano.
03:10And Yuji Nagata.
03:11It's a tie at V10.
03:14And will it be Minoru Suzuki that's the 11th victim of Yoshi Tanahashi's dominant reign?
03:29All that massive crowd in the Tokyo Dome, it's not quite to the volume that it used
03:39to be, although it would be again.
03:41But under Tanahashi's steady diving hand, it's been getting bigger and bigger by the
03:47week, the month, and by the year.
03:50And now he faces the man who would later be known as the king of professional wrestling.
03:56The world has come to the feet of the ace of New Japan Pro Wrestling and the world has
04:14fallen just the same.
04:19When we're referencing a world beater, Chris Charlton, a man like Minoru Suzuki, a man
04:29that has been everywhere, done everything, done everything except become IWGP heavyweight
04:34champion.
04:35The stakes raise even higher.
04:36Yeah, I mean, Minoru Suzuki feels that he was put on this earth to be IWGP champion.
04:45Of all the things that he's done, triple crown champion, king of pancreas, a pioneer of
04:52mixed martial arts, he has never held that IWGP gold.
05:15Tanahashi Hiroshi!
05:26Just one year removed from Minoru Suzuki.
05:29I brought up Yuji Nagata earlier on.
05:31One year ago, Suzuki falling to Yuji Nagata.
05:37And yet, 2011 in New Japan Pro Wrestling, as much as it has been about Hiroshi Tanahashi,
05:43it's also been about Minoru Suzuki.
05:49About his vendetta with New Japan, with Hontai, with Satoshi Kojima.
05:58Suzuki stealing away Taichi and Takumi Chinoku from Kojima-gun and forming Suzuki-gun back
06:06at Dontaku.
06:09And that reign of terror that Minoru Suzuki has been on is now culminating here in the
06:18Tokyo Dome.
06:23As we talk about big match situation, previous singles history between these two men dating
06:29back about eight, nine years ago, their first meeting October 26, 2003, Minoru Suzuki defeating
06:36Hiroshi Tanahashi back in Kobe World Hall.
06:38It would be about a year later, Tanahashi gets his own victory over Minoru back in Shizuoka.
06:46A lot has changed about these two men over the past eight or nine years, Chris.
06:52Indeed, you're right.
06:55And Tanahashi...
06:58Minoru Suzuki has always been about, yes, he feels like he was born to be IWGP champion,
07:04but also born to be just the strongest in general.
07:08Minoru Suzuki has always acted not on the desire to earn the love of the fans and the
07:17love of the people, not for the love of the game, but to be recognized as the strongest,
07:22to be the guy that makes the most money.
07:25Minoru Suzuki went on to be triple crown champion in all Japan pro wrestling, went on to pro
07:33pro wrestling.
07:34Noah went on to apply his trade and fight really wherever the winds would take him.
07:41Minoru Suzuki always staunchly freelance in that regard.
07:46Key difference between these two men, Chris, I'm sure you'd agree with this.
07:49Minoru Suzuki, a man who admittedly fights for himself.
07:52Hiroshi Tanahashi on the other side, fights for New Japan pro wrestling, purely and truly.
07:57That's exactly right.
07:58You know, I mean, Kojima has turned the corner over the last year or so, but that was the
08:04story last year in the Tokyo Dome.
08:06Tanahashi representing New Japan against someone where, well, Kojima at the time, we weren't
08:11sure whether his loyalty is quite laid.
08:17Ever since his first Tokyo Dome main event all the way back in 2005 with Shinsuke Nakamura,
08:24carrying the company on his back, carrying the weight of those expectations.
08:33Cravat positioning here for Minoru Suzuki.
08:36Run down the numbers a little bit.
08:38Prelim them earlier on, the 56th ever IWGP heavyweight champion in Hiroshi Tanahashi.
08:44It is day 365 of this reign, 10 previous defenses going for the record setting, 11th defense
08:49at the expense of Minoru Suzuki here tonight.
08:54Total 19 defenses up to this point, 903 total days across five reigns.
08:59I mean, that's already the makings of a legendary career.
09:02And there's still much more to go, obviously, for Tanahashi himself.
09:05Exactly.
09:06You're exactly right.
09:08And part of that, though, the biggest responsibility Tanahashi feels is in reviving the business,
09:18reviving New Japan pro wrestling's business.
09:21So always point to, still does to this day.
09:24His match he had with Hiroki Goto, 2007 November,
09:29when he defended the IWGP heavyweight title against Goto back then in New York, in Sumo Hall.
09:36You've been in that building.
09:372,200 paid attendance that night.
09:40Wow.
09:41And points to that match as the turning point,
09:44because in front of 2,200 people, they were calling with as loud and as intensely as 10 times that number.
09:53And since then, Tanahashi was able to bring those houses back up a little bit more each time,
09:59a little bit more each time.
10:00And still with that fervor, still with that same energy.
10:03And now here we are in the main event 2012.
10:08Well, there's a lot of ways that you could consider Tanahashi a savior for New Japan pro wrestling.
10:13But in this match specifically, continuing to fight for the honor of the IWGP,
10:18of NJPW itself, Minoru Suzuki fights for his own standards,
10:23his own vision of professional wrestling that purely benefits Minoru Suzuki and Suzuki alone.
10:28I mean, all Suzuki, though, I mean, he says of Tanahashi, you know, you're just a play wrestler.
10:35You know, if you're here for the quite and quite love of the game,
10:38you're no better than a kid wrestling in his backyard.
10:42I'm a true combatant.
10:43I'm true strength, the true essence of strong style.
10:56Neither man letting go of their handfuls of hair.
11:05And Tanahashi looks to keep the control here as it is up all the way to the top here.
11:11And Suzuki slows down all momentum.
11:15Uh-oh.
11:17I think Tanahashi got cute there.
11:19Might have wanted to spring off the second rope.
11:22But he thought, why not?
11:23I'll take the top.
11:24Paying dearly now.
11:25Look at this.
11:26Oh, no.
11:27Cobra right on that top rope.
11:30Tanahashi will get him down.
11:36Minoru Suzuki going to run for it and knocks Tanahashi all the way out to the outside.
11:41Real sense of past, present and future in the top two matches we've had here tonight.
12:06You're seeing the present, the two very best in pro wrestling.
12:11At the start of 2012, Minoru Suzuki and Tanahashi.
12:15Their semi-main event walk-in was past versus the future when Keiji Muto took on Tetsuya Naito.
12:23It wasn't Naito's night here tonight.
12:42And Suzuki walking the dog on the ice here, Walker.
12:47Anything he can do to try and stay on top.
12:51Tanahashi wants New Japan Pro Wrestling on top.
12:54Suzuki cannot be damned about the brand itself, about the industry.
12:58It's all about the industry of Suzuki-gun.
13:01There's that dropkick from Tanahashi one more time.
13:04All right, Tanahashi's going to try and pursue his challenger here.
13:07And the top plush missed out here.
13:10Suzuki's sleeper hold and is going to drag Tanahashi all the way up that ramp.
13:18And the Tokyo Dome is going to get a good long look at both of these two men.
13:33Oh!
13:39Those are live rounds delivered to the chest.
13:42Feels like, sounds like guns going off.
13:45And this is going to feel like thunder.
13:47No, no, no, no, no.
13:49And if we see it, that gotch style.
13:52Gotch style on the ramp.
13:54Hold on!
13:57Oh, Tanahashi fights out of it.
13:59And a huge back body drop for the champion.
14:03You can hear the crack.
14:05I mean, oh, Suzuki's spying on that wooden ramp.
14:12And Suzuki runs it and guns it.
14:15Right down into the skull of Tanahashi.
14:18Tanahashi!
14:27It has been a phenomenal night of action so far, and it only rolls on further.
14:31One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
14:40We all know about the different ways championships can change hands around here.
14:43It can change hands, and it counts out potential.
14:47Eleven.
14:49And we know that Minoru Suzuki more than willing to accept that as a result.
14:54Whatever puts Suzuki into the history books.
14:57Suzuki's got time for calisthenics.
15:00Tanahashi slides in at 18.
15:02Yep, right back on the attack here.
15:04Grounded side headlock.
15:05Pinning attempt.
15:06Only two, says Red Shoes.
15:17Tanahashi!
15:25Oh, mighty headbutt.
15:29Reminiscent of one of his mentors, Yoshiaki Fujiwara.
15:35Again, skull on skull.
15:37Rocks our champion.
15:41And now, yep, Suzuki holds on tight.
15:43Tight Tanahashi down with the headbutt.
15:51As into the cover here for Minoru, and it's two.
15:56As one hit of the mat away from becoming IWGP heavyweight champion.
16:01The one title that has eluded Minoru Suzuki that he's chased.
16:05Oh, look at this, Chris.
16:07The laugh in the face of Tanahashi after all these shots delivered at eight.
16:13How demoralizing it must be to give all you can on a shot like that.
16:19And still he laughs in your face.
16:21Or not laughing now, perhaps.
16:23Tanahashi drops body off the middle.
16:25Got it, got it that time.
16:28Had to get in close.
16:30Got it, got it that time.
16:33Had to get in close earlier on in this matchup.
16:51Combination offense here from the IWGP heavyweight champion.
16:54Off the ropes here.
16:56And a massive forearm rocks Minoru Suzuki.
17:01Minoru!
17:03Now Tanahashi's starting to pick up steam.
17:05Now he's starting to feel himself a little bit.
17:09Let's see.
17:11Let's tune up the band, play some hits right here.
17:13Yep.
17:14Right off the middle, you know what's to come.
17:17Up and down.
17:18Senton bomb connects.
17:20Cover here for Tanahashi, and it's two.
17:30Tanahashi.
17:31Off the ropes.
17:32Oh my god!
17:36Into stage right was Minoru Suzuki there.
17:39Just drop kicking Tanahashi's block off.
17:44One of the most underrated drop kicks of the game
17:47because Suzuki just gets it short range.
17:50You never know when it's going to hit you.
17:52And bang, there it was.
17:54Minoru Suzuki so, so equipped to change momentum on the dime.
17:59We saw it put into play here.
18:05But to keep that momentum on his side,
18:07to halt the ace,
18:09to become IWGP heavyweight champion.
18:14That is the goal from Minoru Suzuki.
18:17Huge kick right to the chest.
18:22And we're going to keep it running for a three.
18:24No, no, no, no, no.
18:26No, no, no, no.
18:27Tanahashi caught it.
18:29Denies the hatchet.
18:30And, oh!
18:33Thought for a second he was thinking dragon screw,
18:36but just drop kicked out the other leg.
18:38You've seen the results of that drop kick earlier on, Walker.
18:42The blood streaming out the mouth
18:44of the IWGP heavyweight champion.
18:47Suzuki trying to find solace now on the floor.
18:50Yeah, and seeing your own blood,
18:51that's going to do one of two things.
18:52It's going to knock out your motivation,
18:54or it's going to push it even harder.
18:55And it looks like Tanahashi
18:56is being pushed even harder than before.
19:00Hiroshi Tanahashi.
19:03The highest of fly flows.
19:06Here we go.
19:07High fly attack from Hiroshi Tanahashi.
19:10This is a high here in the Tokyo Dome.
19:13Crashing into the skull of the challenger.
19:26And let's take a look at it one more time.
19:30Frog position down, and good God,
19:33that is a bad, bad landing for both of those men.
19:37Bad for Tanahashi, worse for Suzuki.
19:43Shades of car wreckage here tonight.
19:49And no Suzuki down on the outside.
19:51I mean, gave it his best shot to get back inside the ring,
19:54but so far hasn't moved.
19:55I mean, Red Shoes determining that Suzuki
19:59had just about gotten onto the apron to break the count.
20:02But you can hear from the tempo of Red Shoes' count
20:07having no nonsense from earlier on.
20:10I think really stretched Red Shoes to breaking point
20:13earlier with those antics on the ramp.
20:16And 18 cut here.
20:18Suzuki, unique offense right on that top rope.
20:21Look at this, Chris.
20:23Gonna snap that arm.
20:25It's illegal, but he's got five seconds
20:28to break the arm of Tanahashi.
20:32Sometimes that's all you need.
20:34Minoru Suzuki right back in on the attack.
20:42And Naoko laughed up
20:46from the challenger.
20:54Got the leg.
20:56Right in the jujigatame.
20:59Right in the jujigatame.
21:03Minoru Suzuki, the cross arm breaker, locked in here.
21:07As he says, the jujigatame.
21:11The cross arm breaker.
21:18Tanahashi trying to...
21:21Yeah, he's got his fingers laced at least, but no, no.
21:24Separated, separated here, Chris.
21:26Look at it, Minoru Suzuki.
21:28It's a matter of seconds.
21:30It is a matter of seconds if he can't relieve the pressure, Walker.
21:33You see Tanahashi trying his best to do that.
21:35Trying to rotate onto his side.
21:37Anything to alleviate the pressure to the bottom rope.
21:40The champion makes it.
21:45It is the main event in the Tokyo Dome tonight.
21:51Tanahashi.
22:02Attention, fans all the way around the world.
22:05Suzuki, his influence.
22:09Very well respected at this time.
22:11Respected and feared.
22:13Tanahashi's fear of influence growing ever greater.
22:17The knee being pressed right into the jaw.
22:19The bleeding jaw of Hiroshi Tanahashi.
22:21And that is not going to help your chances whatsoever.
22:25I know.
22:27This match being viewed, oh man, by a young John Marksley.
22:33Oh my gosh.
22:35Go on to be motivated to be a part of New Japan Pro Wrestling Circles
22:41because of sadistic violence.
22:44Sadistic violence and sadistic acts.
22:47Like the one Minoru Suzuki is engaged in right now.
22:52That is a sick, sick man in the head and physically all over Minoru Suzuki.
23:01I wouldn't lick those ropes.
23:03Yujo Takahashi probably held on to that earlier on tonight.
23:06Come on.
23:08Minoru wanted that pub kicking instead.
23:11Tanahashi out and under.
23:14All the way over the top.
23:16He's up high again.
23:17Beautiful.
23:18High fly attack.
23:20What a combination.
23:21And he's going to go up again.
23:23And this time it will be for the title walker.
23:25Tanahashi high.
23:27No.
23:30The knees up for Minoru Suzuki.
23:32Minoru Suzuki knew Tanahashi's game plan.
23:36Oh, and now a sadistic, sick grin on the face.
23:46Knowing that he's just taken Tanahashi's best weapon from him.
23:53That pancreas influence here, Chris.
23:56Hard strikes, rights and lefts.
23:58Changes levels, up, down, right.
24:06Minoru Suzuki is moments away.
24:09Hold on, hold on.
24:10Check the man cover here.
24:12Two.
24:15Tanahashi changes the dive.
24:18Dragging no strength.
24:19Checking German suplex from Tanahashi.
24:22And it's two.
24:27Kurumashiki.
24:29All of a sudden, it's Tanahashi that's turned momentum.
24:35On a dime again.
24:37With that straight jacket German suplex on the move.
24:40Oh, misdirection here.
24:42Wanted it, doesn't have it.
24:43Here's this.
24:44Sleeper hold locked in for Minoru Suzuki.
24:47Inches away.
24:48Moments away from becoming IWGP heavyweight champion.
24:53And grounding out the champ here.
24:55This is exactly what Suzuki wanted from the get-go.
24:58One.
25:00Two.

30:15Oh, I think Tadahashi got one up there.
30:31Suzuki's got more though, Walker.
30:34Oh, does he?
30:37Dragon style, Tadahashi.
30:52Sling blade for Tadahashi.
30:58You can see he's starting to crawl, starting to crawl towards the corner.
31:02Had designs on high fly flow, but his body won't let him, Walker.
31:06She's just not there, and that is what these two men are laying it all on the line for.
31:11The heavyweight title of IWGP zone.
31:19But still, somehow, someway, Tadahashi up high.
31:23From the heavens, high fly flow.
31:28And it's going to take one more to put down this sick bastard.
31:34High fly flow.
31:39Tadahashi is still IWGP heavyweight champion.
31:44History made, record set.
31:53For the 11th time in his fifth reign as IWGP champion.
32:01We hear the words, and still.
32:15Incredible depth, reserve of energy.
32:24Of heart, of spirit.
32:27That Tadahashi possesses.
32:36That was everything you could have hoped for and more.
32:40Unless your name is Minoru Suzuki.
32:47These two men set out for battle.
32:51From the ramp, still back inside the ring.
32:54This is what New Japan Pro Wrestling is all about.
33:12Suzuki, not great with my lip reading, but soon as I say, we aren't done yet.
33:19But to the victor for now, the spoils.
33:21And here we get to go into our special ceremony.
33:37How terrible, you win and retain the IWGP heavyweight championship and they give you the check.
33:48Takumi Chinoku and Taichi, leading Minoru Suzuki away.
33:56Certainly we saw the fighting spirit of Minoru Suzuki, but Tadahashi had just a little bit more.
34:57Don't tell Tadahashi's wife.
35:01These are the spoils.
35:09Romain Rainwalker, the IWGP heavyweight champion.
35:18And the questions had to be so quick.
35:21I know I was right here, up in the cheap seats.
35:25Just who could stop Hiroshi Tanahashi at this point in time?
35:33Clearly a cut above everybody in New Japan Pro Wrestling.
35:39But here's a young man who has other ideas.
35:43I believe it or not, it's Kazuchika Okada.
35:51You can hear the reaction of this proud worker.
35:54I mean, Okada is in absolutely no position to be making this level of challenge.
36:01He is told to go home.
36:03I mean, Okada is in absolutely no position to be making this level of challenge.
36:09He is told to go home.
36:13Let's face it, kind of stank up the joint with Yoshihashi a little bit earlier on.
36:18Just barely got by him and here he is, opposite the champion.
36:26Congratulations on setting a new record with that IWGP heavyweight championship.
36:33Well, thank you for your hard work.
36:37Because from now on, the ace era is over.
36:45And the Rainmaker will lead New Japan Pro Wrestling.
36:49I'm sorry, Okada. I've never been tired since I was born.
36:59I'm sorry, Okada. I've never been tired since I was born.
37:06I'll say it again, IWGP is still a long way to go.
37:19Are you sure you want to do this?
37:39Alright, well the people seem to be on side, so I'll do it with you.
37:45Now you need to get stronger to beat me.
37:53I can't describe to you, you can hear it through your sets.
37:57I can remember it vividly.
38:00Wow.
38:02The atmosphere in that building have been, who the heck is he?
38:07To have issued that challenge.
38:09But Chris, the chain reaction that would be to follow over the next 10 years of professional wrestling.
38:17Completely unprecedented until tonight.
38:22None of us at the time knew we were witnessing history in that regard.
38:28But we are seeing the historical moment.
38:3511th defense for Tanahashi.
38:39I think the fans want to hear Tanahashi's voice.
38:43Please tell us how you feel with the belt around your waist.
38:52Even for me, I thought I would be able to defend the IWGP belt 10 times.
39:10Tanahashi-san, aren't you happy with the 11th defense in the history of the Tokyo Dome?
39:19Because I said I was the number one in the history of the Tokyo Dome, I will prove it in the future.
39:29And today, you faced a really tough opponent, Suzuki Minoru.
39:34How do you look back on the fight?
39:36Before the match, I was really nervous and scared.
39:44But I was scared enough.
39:48And of course, none of us lost.
39:54I'm glad I didn't give up in this ring.
39:57I'm glad I didn't give up.
40:03You showed us a really great fight.
40:07And finally, Kazuchika Okada is here.
40:10I'm sure the fans are looking forward to it.
40:14Please tell the fans how you feel.
40:16Okada, stop it!
40:24Once again,
40:27I'm here to defend Saitama!
40:39I understand how Okada feels.
40:43But if he wants the recognition of these people,
40:52he will need to step up.
40:55And this ring is not a safe space or an easy place to be.
41:00Just how far will the S go from here?
41:10Well, next year, I'll come back as the champion right here.
41:15I'll be the champion of the Tokyo Dome next year!
41:19I'll be the champion of the Tokyo Dome next year!
41:23I'll be the champion of the Tokyo Dome next year!
41:26Well, next year, I'll come back as the champion right here.
41:31How is it?
41:33Are you annoyed?
41:42Everyone, thank you for your support until the end.
41:46And thanks for your support all through the night.
41:57I look forward to what New Japan Pro-Wrestling has to offer in 2012,
42:03which will be a hell of a year in its history.
