00:05:39I'm talking about tonight and rebuilding the legacy of AJ Styles.
00:05:52So I know there's a lot of guys that don't like me and I don't blame them.
00:05:56But there's a lot of other guys that need to be reminded that this is still the house that AJ Styles built.

00:14:18against the upstart Carmelo Hayes.
00:14:20The United States Champion, LA Knight, is at ringside.
00:14:22This is what's at stake for Hayes, Corey.
00:14:24Knock off Styles.
00:14:25LA Knight, he's gonna talk to the general manager to give Carmelo Hayes
00:14:29the United States Championship match.
00:14:31Of course, leave it to the megastar LA Knight to sweeten the pot even more,
00:14:34as though there needed to be any sweeter.
00:14:36This is Carmelo Hayes one-on-one with one of the greatest to ever
00:14:39step foot in a ring, the phenomenal AJ Styles.
00:14:42What Carmelo Hayes could possibly do tonight could make all of the difference
00:14:46in his career, knocking off a surefire future Hall of Famer like Styles.
00:14:50When AJ's first night back, that is a massive potential feather
00:14:54in the cap of Carmelo Hayes.
00:14:55Carmelo Hayes tied three wins apiece in his big battle against Andrade,
00:14:59taking the fight now to AJ Styles, the former two-time WWE Champion.
00:15:03Put the shoe on the other foot for a moment.
00:15:05You'd have to imagine that AJ Styles, freshly coming back to Smackdown,
00:15:08would love an opportunity in the future to become United States Champion
00:15:11yet again, particularly at the expense of the man who defeated him
00:15:14at WrestleMania, LA Knight.
00:15:16Speaking of championships, you have to wonder, Corey,
00:15:18what Carmelo Hayes thinks about his old running buddy,
00:15:21Trick Williams, winning the NXT Championship over Ethan Page
00:15:24on the debut of NXT in the CW this past Tuesday night.

00:15:30An unbelievable night we all got to enjoy together.
00:15:33Right now, Carmelo Hayes, dropkick by Styles.

00:15:40It was back all the way in the year 2000, Corey,
00:15:43where AJ Styles debuted in this city as part of the NWA Anniversary Show.
00:15:48He won a TNAX title here, an NWA Championship here,
00:15:52Tag Team titles here as well.
00:15:54AJ Styles loves wrestling in Nashville.
00:15:57I was in the building the very first night they were here in Nashville.
00:16:00But Carmelo Hayes now has an opportunity to really separate himself from the pack.
00:16:05We talked a lot over recent weeks between Hayes and Andrade
00:16:08and how crowded the middle of the card is right now,
00:16:11particularly potential challenges for LA Knight's Championship.
00:16:14A win tonight would definitely do that for Carmelo Hayes.
00:16:17Well, you mentioned AJ Styles.
00:16:18He's a former three-time United States Champion in his own right.
00:16:24And AJ Styles has enough respect for this industry.
00:16:27AJ knows he's got to climb his way back up the ladder.
00:16:30AJ doesn't expect to just walk in the door and receive a WWE Championship opportunity.

00:16:44Styles kicks out, but what a move by the uber-athletic Carmelo Hayes.
00:16:48What I was in the process of saying is AJ realizes that the landscape has changed
00:16:53just in the short few months that AJ's been away.
00:16:55Carmelo Hayes wants to bear the flag.

00:17:00Now, AJ Styles, he has had some in-ring action over the summer.
00:17:04The much ballyhooed and publicity-driven matchup, of course,
00:17:09in pro wrestling NOAH.

00:17:16We'll make no mistake about it.
00:17:18AJ Styles always keeps his skill set razor sharp,
00:17:21whether it be here in WWE or somewhere else around the globe.
00:17:23My point is, AJ was able to take a step back from the madness of WWE
00:17:28to recalibrate himself, to find himself, to let his body heal a little bit.
00:17:32After 20-plus years in the ring, you're going to have some nagging injuries,
00:17:36no matter how good you are.
00:17:37And now he's in the ring with one of the bright, young superstars in WWE today.
00:17:42You may not like his attitude.
00:17:45Oh, and Styles dropped right in front of the United States champion.
00:17:50Carmelo Hayes in control.
00:17:53As our matchup continues.

00:17:58Now, you notice a half crab in here for Carmelo Hayes and AJ Styles.
00:18:01There is a reason that Carmelo Hayes is now focused on the leg of AJ Styles.
00:18:06During the matchup, before the break, AJ got hurt.
00:18:10The doctor checked on him during the commercial break,
00:18:12checking his left leg and ankle.
00:18:14Now, as the doc went back to the ringside area,
00:18:16he told Corey and I that it's a possible sprained ankle for AJ Styles in his return tonight.
00:18:22So, Carmelo Hayes focused his offense now on the leg.
00:18:25And this is just terrible happenstance for AJ Styles.
00:18:27Just a few minutes before this matchup began,
00:18:29you could see how much offense AJ took to Carmelo calling him a quitter.
00:18:33Styles would rather drop dead in the ring than quit in the middle of a match ever again.
00:18:38And Styles now having trouble, of course, bouncing on that leg,
00:18:41but still able to deliver offense on Carmelo Hayes.
00:18:45AJ Styles, he looks to reforge his legacy on Friday Night SmackDown
00:18:49as Carmelo Hayes looks to create his own legacy.
00:18:52But AJ is in a bad, bad way.
00:18:54Bad, bad way on one good leg right now.
00:18:57Yeah, Styles who once held the WWE Championship for 371 days.
00:19:02Oh, that made it worse.
00:19:04Back of the neck, and again, the bad.
00:19:06And that's the worst part.
00:19:08AJ at this point may be a danger to himself.
00:19:11AJ went for a maneuver we have watched him perform hundreds,
00:19:14if not thousands of times, this back breaker, the neck breaker,
00:19:17whatever you want to call it.
00:19:18And instead of AJ's leg holding up, it buckled.
00:19:21This could be catastrophic for the phenomenal.
00:19:23And Charles Robinson now sending AJ to the corner.
00:19:26And Styles is calling for the bell.
00:19:28And this is unfortunate, but this is what you've got to do.
00:19:34And the Doc is going to head over to the ring.
00:19:36Referee Charles Robinson saying that this matchup is over
00:19:40after the injury to Styles' leg.
00:19:43Listen, this is the unfortunate part of our business.
00:19:46Injuries do happen.
00:19:48Ring rust may have played a factor.
00:19:50We talked about how AJ likes to keep his skill set razor sharp at all times.
00:19:55But a layoff is a layoff.
00:19:57Your body is going to react differently.
00:19:59AJ obviously was not in the same shape that he believed that he was.
00:20:02Or at least AJ's brain and his body weren't on the same page.
00:20:05This is where we're speculating.
00:20:07We think the injury may have occurred.
00:20:09AJ coming up.
00:20:12Yeah, that could have been it right there.
00:20:14And then this is where everything went south.
00:20:17AJ unable to support his own weight to drive Hayes down across.
00:20:21And now AJ Styles visibly upset.
00:20:23Ladies and gentlemen, AJ Styles is no longer able to compete.
00:20:28Therefore, the winner of the match is Carmella.
00:20:32But wait a minute, LA Knight with a BFT to Hayes.
00:20:35Drops him right on the top of his head.
00:20:41Well, LA Knight certainly lifted morale here in Nashville.
00:20:45But I don't know if that was necessary.
00:20:48Carmella Hayes went toe-to-toe with one of the all-time greats.
00:20:52A wild turn of events put him in.
00:20:54That's what this is all about.
00:20:56Anything can happen in WWE.
00:20:57Styles could not finish the match.
00:20:59Hayes gets the victory.
00:21:00But this is about as close as you're about to get.
00:21:02So I guess that means if LA Knight keeps his promise,
00:21:05Carmella Hayes is going to earn himself the United States Championship opportunity.
00:21:09One would assume that would be the case.
00:21:11It's a terrible turn of events.
00:21:13It's great to see AJ Styles, one of the all-time greats, go down with an injury.
